  • Unboxing the new 2018 TCL 6-Series 55R615. The first part of the video was shot on launch day, May 01, 2018, while the second part with overall impressions after one week of use was shot on May 10.
    Bill goes through unboxing the TV, the kind of protective materials inside, each of the included accessories, two ways to attach the feet, dimensions and mounting options, connections, setup, and first impressions. After that he got kinda lazy and started reading off a list from his phone of the improvements that were made with the new 6-series over the 2017 P-series that he owned for a week.
    One week later he came back a changed man and could give a verdict on how the TV had behaved so far.

    FYI: That large cardboard piece that came in the package can be used to show the mounting for the tv when it is placed upon the wall, itself, sort of like a big template. You can mark it as to where the mounting holes on the Vesa mount would be, which would be lower than the center of the tv. Using this as a sort of a template, you can see what the tv would look like on the wall before you actually mount it onto the wall permanently. For the 65" TCL tv, the mounting holes are 11.8" or 300 mm apart, I believe. I am torn between making a french cleat for this 65" tv or purchasing a standard wall mount for it. Not sure what is the better option. I believe the 65" tv weighs about 46 lbs, but probably less without the feet attached, I suspect. Any thoughts as to the best setup to hide the cords to the various extra components you wish to have with it? Thanks.

    Your issue with the width of the feet is the same as ours; we also refurbished our own piece of furniture and needed this to fit! 8:24 Mark convinced my wife this will be safe and fit fine! The solution to invert the feet saved me $$ from needing to buy an aftermarket "tabletop stand" - great video!

    Love this TV it's really nice on 4k gaming and the response time is really good. I'm not a fan of it for any sports like soccer but football looks good and crisp. I don't understand the hate this TV gets. Yes everyone is going to have a bad experience once and a while but overall the TV is a steal for the price and picture.

      I agree. This TV is a bargain for the features and the quality as long as you get a good panel. I got a great one on the first shot so it must not be too bad. This TV looks amazing with Xbox one X and HDR. The input lag with 4K HDR enabled is great as well.

    Best TCL unboxing I have seen! Lots of details. I wonder, how is the up scaling? Can you just buy the upgraded remote? Does the voice function allow you to search for content on RUclips, Netflix, etc? Can you use the 7 second (10?) skip back button in Netflix and RUclips? I ask because, on the Roku Ultra, you can not search by voice or skip back on RUclips...Thanks!

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  6 лет назад +2

      I'll answer at least for the things I know about so far. The upscaling seems to work quite well. The first movie I watched was The Force Awakens on standard Blu-ray and I kept remarking (to myself) how much it looked like a 4K source. Streaming non-4K stuff over Netflix is working well so far, or at least as well as the source content allows. You might have to play with toggling some of the settings until you get the picture to look the best when streaming.
      From what I've read, other owners of the R615 sets have been able to pair an existing voice remote to their TVs just fine. IIRC, you have to power cycle the TV while pairing the remote and it'll recognize it right off the bat.
      I actually haven't tried the skip back button yet so I'll have to play with it soon.

    Did you mount this set by chance? Was jut at Best Buy today and a Guy was returning his because he said it mounts way at the bottom of the tv making this difficult to mount and the tv say way too high. Possibly he didn’t move the mount I guess

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  6 лет назад

      I put the feet on mine (inverted) because it sits on top of a table. In the video I showed that the VESA mounts are close to the bottom of the television, pretty much below the centerline. That could make it difficult to mount if you don't have something solid down low enough, like if you were wanting to mount it over a fireplace or something along those lines. I haven't looked, but there might be specialized wall mounts that can handle that sort of offset.

    Tiny Little Workshop have you had issues with cable type running the from a video card at 4k 60hz? When I enable 59 or 60 hz in nvidia control it goes purple and green. I believe it's due to the quality of my hdmi cable but can't find others eith similar problems.

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  6 лет назад

      I actually haven't hooked mine up to a computer yet. I've just been using the built-in apps and a Sony UBP-X700 4K player. I did have to upgrade my active HDMI cable from the player because the chip in my other nearly new active cable wasn't quite new enough to support 60Hz signals / HDCP 2.2 and would show either static or fully cut out. It worked fine on 24 Hz content though.

    I did the panel roulette with the 65 and my issue was dark in the corners. Swapped it out and the replacement was fine. No banding. A tad of dirty screen affect but not enough that you'd ever notice watching content..The 65" is only 719 on Amazon right now.

    Thank you so much for this excellent unboxing & review video. The best I've seen so far. I too would be watching a lot of movies and streaming so it's great to hear the 6 Series performs well in that aspect. And reassuring to know you got a good set without the banding issues. I'm just concerned about the VESA mounts, it seems they are very low on the back. I wanted to mount this on my Whalen tv stand, but not if it's going to be way up in the air. I'll still get it of course just hoping to get the look I've been going for. Thanks again for the excellent video!

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      I had the 2017 P-series set for all of a week, so my comparisons were based mostly on my memory. From what I could see, the upgrades were more subtle rather than grabbing your attention and making you say 'Wow!". Either one is going to look great if you get a panel with no banding, so it just comes down to whether it is worth it to you for some extra brightness, more contrast control zones, and the other little improvements.

    i wish that I fully understood about half of what you were saying, but I am not a tv geek by any means. Anyrate, I did enjoy listening and found the parts which I did understand helpful, as I do plan on picking up this model at Best Buy, soon. One question though, they sell a wall mount at Best Buy which I believe is Rockfish. It that any better than what you can pick up as a wall mount for a 55" or larger tv at WalMart for about half the price? In addition, what exact HDMI cable did you say you had picked up to use on this set? Is installation worth paying for to have the Geek Squad come set this baby up if you are not a tv geek? Thanks for posting as it was very, very helpful to me.

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  5 лет назад

      I've not wall mounted a TV in over a decade, so I don't really have much advice to give there. If I were looking for a wall mount, I'd make sure it had the features I desired, that it could hold the weight required, and look at some (genuine) reviews to see if other people liked it or not.
      For the HDMI cable, I personally needed an active cable because my 4K player is a ways away and on a different wall than the TV. Active cables are for long cable runs and include a chip inside to basically boost the signal to travel those longer distances. Most people with short cable runs will be fine with a more simple certified 4K HDMI cable, the kind with the shiny sticker that says "Premium Certified Cable" and has a verification QR code on it. My cable is a 20' long Monoprice HOSS which has an active chipset that can handle HDCP 2.2 signals. The cable I mentioned that didn't work for all content was a Monoprice Cabernet 25' active cable with an older chipset that had trouble with handling high framerates from my 4K player.
      Is it worth paying for installation? I can't really answer that one for you because I don't know your skill level or what you might feel capable of. Aside from what you've seen in this and other videos, you could always download the appropriate manual(s) and read through any areas that you feel might need extra clarification.

    • @markjordan4994

      Wall mounts sold at Best Buy are horribly overpriced. You'll find reasonably priced wall mounts at Walmart and Amazon. You may have to find M6 X 16mm mounting screws, too, if RCL doesn't included them with the TV. Many manufacturers don't.

      It is darker in the corners, but the only time I've ever noticed it was when I was running test patterns, never when watching anything. The only thing I ever really notice is a bit of very mild banding, but even then I basically only ever see it during vertical pans over shots of light skies or clouds. I don't think the television can recognize some of those things in the first place. You can put a thumb drive in the USB port and be able to pause & rewind live television to a certain extent, but input devices are out of the question so far as I know. • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  5 лет назад

      Nope. It has been performing very well all this time. The only additional tiny thing I've noticed is that once every month or two we'll get a weird green or blue tinged ring that replaces some other shade of color in the show we're watching. It moves with the content, like a weird living band of color. All it takes to get rid of it is to power the set off and back on and it will disappear completely. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, and it has shown up on different inputs, while streaming, or while watching from the 4K disc player.

    The 65 doesnt have the banding problems

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  6 лет назад

      I've seen many reports of people with 55" and 65" sets that had banding. They've had to play the panel lottery until they got a good one. I got lucky that mine had zero issues right out of the box.

      I did the panel roulette with the 65 and my issue was dark in the corners. Swapped it out and the replacement was fine. No banding. A tad of dirty screen affect but not enough that you'd ever notice watching content.

    The 55R617 model is 120Hz

    • @TinyLittleWorkshop
      @TinyLittleWorkshop  5 лет назад

      The R615 and R617 are both 60 Hz native panels. The only difference between the two model codes is that one comes with a fancier remote. The sets do have a feature that can process the image and apply what TCL calls CMI to fake 120 Hz, but these sets cannot display native 120 Hz content.

      Mine runs on the 110V that is most commonly available here. I was hoping that the Owner's Manual or spec sheet would contain more info than that, but it doesn't. I'd have to look at the label on the set itself to see if it is dual voltage capable.
