You criticise the upscaling even before watching 1080p content? All you have done is commented on the Roku OS UI pixelation from a content menu. We don't even know if that still is outputting at 1080p. Also, "everything streaming out of Xbox 1 X will be 4K" is absolutely not true, the content provider and the content itself determines resolution output, the X box 1 X just has the potential to render 4K content. The upscaling engine in this TV uses similar technology for upscaling found in top-tier brands, and in my experience is comperable to most TVs in its pricerange. To be fair, the video was nice and your first impressions were valuable, I would simply sugest for you to first experience and research the performance of certain features of a television before you criticise them.
The Xbox one X has a built in scaler and upscales all content to 4k. While this is not necessarily native 4k when scaling with the Xbox, it would solve the issue he mentioned. I think this is what he is referring too.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
@Axton Sutton Instablaster ;)
@Melvin Jackson i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Melvin Jackson it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out!
i bought the TCL 55r615, dont need the voice remote, the tv is stunning absolutely stunning. Running a Dolby Atmos Denon receiver
How's the durability? Is it still great after 2 years. Thank you.
Great work on the video man! Your reviews just keep getting better!
Thank you!
"Happy Wife Happy Life"......"If Mama's not Happy...No Buddy's Happy"....came to mind listening to this.
I see in the review, and a lot of people below talking about how bad their their "Less than 4K content" looks on this TV. That is because by default the TV is running an up-scaler. MOST tv is film in like 24 fps or some something. This TV runs much faster, so it's upsclaer is actually creating frames to fill in the gaps. (This is called fast frame synchronization). This gives all the older and less than 4K content a very odd look to it. It makes it look like everyone is one of the old soap operas. Also it looks like professionally shot movies were done with a Sony Handy Cam with the ant-shake feature turned OFF. LoL ******** YOU CAN EASILY CORRECT THIS ISSUE WITH THIS TV, YOU ARE NOT STUCK AS THE VIDEO REVIEWER SAYS YOU ARE*************** Very simple, when you are watching something that is not 4K kand you don't like the way it loos, click on your little star button * this brings up the left side menue, click DOWN one time to < PIcture Mode > CLick to the LEFT one time to * MOVIE and then arrow out or let the menu drop. This stops the TV from trying to close the gaps and allows the movies to be seen as they were meant to be. I have 2 of these TV"s and this works like a charm. I promise guys!! Just because this is a 700 dollar TV Does NOT mean you have to sit through horrible looking content!
JackG79 great explanation here! 👍🏽 I picked up the 65S405 from Best Buy last night for $399! Love it! And I have $550 left from my $1K budget now I can add some premium sound bars subs stoked!
Those are two different things.
Soap opera effect is called Motion Interpolation (Action Smoothing setting on the TCL). It takes 24fps video and triez to make it 60fps, but can result in motion artifacts.
Upscaling is taking a 1080p signal and trying to make it more detailed up to a 4k image.
Thanks for your video upload. The new TCL X4 Qled is about to come out -the specs look awesome!!
Thanks Techno Dad! We bought this same TV for our masterbedroom, hooked up to our AppleTV 4k. Thanks for the quick settings tips! We love this TV for the bedroom setting.
Nice Richard!!
I just received my tcl 65 inch from best buy & wow it's amazing I have no picture problems color is perfect so far so good.
Still going strong?
I've got the 65 inches 617 model but daaamn it is great. Yes a few vertical banding but I harely and rarely see them. Black is blaaaack, 4k, HDR and Dolby are super great. Didn't waste my money and got it for much cheaper than those high end expensive TV
Please change your firealarm battery. Or replace it with a new one.
This is a friendly reminder and not a test!
Lol! Yeah, that happened a while ago!
Very helpful video. Answered many questions that I had & couldn't find answers to. Thank you.
Hi Paul! Thank you so much! I'm glad you found the video.
Thanks for taking your time with the TV and putting out a well presented video. A few guys have rushed out vids or even reviewed the TV without owning it. Looking forward to hearing more once you put it through its paces.
Hi! Thanks! I feel like you can't really get the full scope of the TV unless you're using it daily for a while.
Techno Dad, you're the TCL P & 6 series guy! Thanks for all the work put into helping the community really.
Woukd you say it's a serious upgrade from the P series? Which determinants factors make it or not a real upgrade?
Hi! You're very welcome, and thanks for watching! I think this could be a good upgrade, especially since they added motion interpolation (soap opera effect) and we go from 72 dimming zones to 96. Still have to wait and see!
I got the best buy version and bought the enhanced tv remote directly from Roku..
The remote is missing the mute on the side of the remote
Voice button search does not engage voice search on the tv. It does click but the tv does nothing
The headphone jack also does nothing
The only good thing is that the new remote is RF instead of IR so I can control the tv without pointing the remote at the tv
You rock! Can’t wait to see what Vizio does. Will wait till then.
Nice! I'm looking to get a Vizio as well. Just trying to figure out which one.
Techno Dad I would try that Quantum 65". Looks sick.
Great Unboxing , considering what this tv packs inside , its a pretty , pretty , good deal :)
Wow! The interface, looks EXACTLY the same, as my P-Series. Honestly, I believe there is not much variation, between the P-series and the S-series, except the increase in FALD from 72 to 96 FALD zones. Overall, it's a good tv for the price. Of course, being a x900e owner, it can beat, either of TCL in every other category (contrast, motion interpolation, natural color, peak brightness), except for gaming and possibly FALD. VERY little lag for the TCL.
Very Good reviews bro but please add demos to your videos as well. Like you could have added a fast action movie scene playing on this TV to actually show us how 4K looks on this TV and how the stock speakers sound like. I still haven't seen how your HT setup looks and sounds like.
I'll get hit with copyright strikes
Spend the 2 dollars it takes to stop your smoke detector from beeping multiple times throughout your video. Plus, when your are talking about an LED TV, please let us know the configuration of the back light. As someone who has a 4K TV that has "HDR10" support, I know it doesn't mean anything if the contrast is not very good. The black levels are king in any "HDR" TV. The more local dimming zones the better.
I have this TV and love the picture. For non 4K content I'll set the picture mode to "Movie" mode. Not as bright but takes care of lighting and studder issues.
Nice! I like movie mode!
Do you recommend this tv?
I went to Walmart and they make in the TV area a stand that mounts to the back but you can put on top of a dresser or TV stand it's an expensive under $100 and works amazing
Very cool!!
Would this TV be good for mainly watching 4k movies and some gaming?
The Vizio M series m55-e0 55 inch UHD 4k display is far superior for a much cheaper price than the TCL r6 55 at 650+ dollars. The Vizio is like 100-150 cheaper if you get best buy to price match sams clubs sold out price of 549. The Vizio is also a beast for both 4k PC and console gaming too also has built in chromecast and smartcast.
TCL got a bunch of suckers to pay an upcharge for last years tech. Hope yall feel good about this.
Sorry but I returned the 55in Vizio M for the R6 and it's wayyyy better than the M. Def worth the extra money for the better Roku interface and way higher Nit brightness.
Great unboxing and first impression video... I can't wait for your full review. Up scaling is not as important to me. I will be using my Xboxonex for that. You can't go wrong when you get so much for so little. 2 years from now, because of the budget price, replacing this tv won't be so painful. In one of your videos, please explain the 60hz vs 120hz. Which one is present in the R6 series and does it matter? Many of us have conflicting information. Thank You :)
The upscaler is the most important feature of a TV by far. From someone who has 2 OLEDs and 3 LCD/LED TVs and to UST projectors, 99.999% of all content watched on a TV is 1080i broadcast. Not even 1080P...there is hardly any broadcast. Maybe 1080P compressed RUclips or Netflix/Amazon/etc has to be upscaled as well. Now 4K......Let alone HDR10 or Plus or Dolby Vision is almost unheard of and 99% of it is compressed.
Are you seeing any of the LED issues in the panel?
Please show us how to do the double d bro! Thanks! Great content
Nice job young man, I am awaiting the follow up.
something is off with this TV. checked best buy site and seem to have an unusual amount of open box returns for sale.
Hey, Techno Dad. Loved the video. Would you recommend upgrading to a 65 inch TCL 6 series for someone coming from a Samsung KS9500?
I've heard on some forums that hdmi 3 had lowest input lag, have you noticed this or are all the same?
Hey TD, how you like the brightness compared to the x900e.? I have it next to my ks8500 and it looks great, black levels are far superior.
What's up Joelster!?!?!?! I haven't compared it to the X900E just yet. I haven't really watched too many things on it just yet. I gotta get it in the master bedroom.
I am considering this TV for my condo living room which gets a lot of sunshine. Is there a lot of glare from the screen or can it get very bright to minimize any glare?
@@JensonPais This TV is very bright, I have a window that faces the West setting sun and the sun shines through and on to this TV but the picture is still bright.
@@007galaxie Ah, I see. Hope it helps someone else. I got a good deal on a 55inch Sony X900F and I took it.
Great video but I'm not liking what I'm reading on the forums I have to be honest. I was very excited to see them come out too.
Are all the Roku apps are subscription services? How many channels available without subscription? Thanks!
I've been watching the NBA playoffs on this TV via cable TV in 1080i and it looks horrible in my opinion. Really considering returning this TV because I watch a lot of sports. But 4k content does look great.
How's the input lag on gaming mode? And does hdr work in gaming mode? Also how's the motion blur with out the soap opera effect. As a gamer these are the things that are important to me.
I am buying a new TV and strongly considering this one simply because my 40 inch 1080p TV died after a power surge despite being plugged into a surge protector. And 4K TVs are all in the market. I will be plugging in and Xfinity cable box which has a 1080i signal at best. I know you have a DirecTV box. In your estimation how did this TV handle the display from cable and or satellite in your case? You had mentioned there may be problems with that. Would it behoove me to get a AV receiver to handle the 4K upscaling?
Whats the difference from the 2017 model?
Are you sure this TV is capable of HLG HDR? The official specs for this TV on TCL's website states support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision but not for HLG. Also, the review of this TV on RTINGS.com specifically states that HLG HDR is not supported.
Hi Dave!! Yes, TCL didn't say this in last year's 6 series either. The HDR from the RUclips app is VP9 HLG
Great Editing
Thanks!!!
Does the tv recognize other TCL remotes with number buttons? Or does it only accept the typical Roku-remote? Samsung tv's for instance, recognize pretty much every other Samsung remote. So can i use other TCL remotes with number buttons for that tv?
I’m upgrading my master bedroom tv from a 32” RCA 720p and I think all that I really need is a quality1080 tv but do not want to break the bank on one for the bedroom. What would you recommend? I’d like to have 50”-55”
I'm buying one from someone who had it for 2 years. Should I buy it or not? I don't know if it still has warranty from company
There is definitely no warranty at this point.
You mentioned you have the Sony 900E. Im on the fence about the 900E or the new TCL. What do you recommend? Does the TCL look better than the Sony? Great vid!
That's hard to say. Some say the Sony is better, some say the TCL is better
I've had my 55r617 since Monday. Do you notice on "normal" or "movie" that the whites look more yellow than usual? That's what I'm seeing if I don't make everything "vivid". Also while gaming and moving the camera to a bright spot in the image I can see static dark spots on my screen. One is about an inch and a half thick vertical line about 1/3 into the panel from the left. Is that just me or should I expect uniformity issues?
madcrabs That’s a uniformity issue aka Defective unit.
Also you should turn off Warm and put it on Normal. That’s why your whites look Yellow.
really love your after effects. did you do this or is there a package you purchased for these effects? thanks for the reference!
Hi! I got the template from videohive dot net
How is it streaming RUclips and those services, on my 605 I get horrendous studder or ghost trailing while watching you tub4 toons for my son.. is new model better?
Hi Td, As we all know we've been reading the banding issues reviews on these two sets. Have you had any problems with your TV? I'm going to use your TV as a guinea pig before I purchase one. Your TV will be a yes or a no before I buy one. Thx
It's really not THAT bad. I don't notice it when watching content. But I'll notice it on a purely gray screen. But it's hard to see in everyday viewing.
Can't wait to get this. Thx for the input
Dude!! I hated how it always turned on automatically to the Roku interface
I got this tv on saturday of last week. Well worth the 600 I paid. Im using it for my consoles and gaming pc aside from my 1080p 144hz gaming monitor 27inch. Nice darks and whites and good color gamut.
For the same features on a Sony I would be forced to shell out $2,000.00 to $3,000.00 plus tax.
I know there are purists out there who would demean someone who cant afford the higher end displays, but hey if they have have the mentality and money then they are more than welcome to donate me $3,000.00 for the Sony display so I can buy it.
All in all good review.
How many inches are saved turning the legs inward? (From the way they should be) I want one of these but I think it’s too big for my stand.
Mr. Serr i have it and it saves about 3 or 4 inches when inverted so you dont have to worry about the table you have it on.
Did you turn on the 4K Upscaling in the settings? I heard it’s turned off.
Hisense may not have the same overall 4k picture quality, but their upscaler is far superior to this set in a similar price range.
I was excited when this TV was announced but am starting to get concerned that it may not be for me. I need a 65" that will look great with non 4k source material. I watch a ton of live sports via Directv. Which TV would you recommend for that?
bigmixx Go Vizio M series if you want that
Where is the box in unboxing video
I thought the whole time I was incapable of noticing the difference. HDR is nice but I preferred SDR
Looks very thick. I see these all over BJ’s warehouse
I wish someone would address the lip syncing issues that this TV series has
Hi! Where are the lip syncing issues coming from? What kind of source? I'm not getting any.
How good is it for Sports?
How can i connect Bulsatcom tv system to this tv? I want to buy this tv but our family uses Bulsatcom and it goes to our old tv via scart cable. Please help me...
TCL 55R615 Coming had the TCL 55p605 picture panel went bad bleeding colors reset couple of times problem wasn't solved.
Let me know how you like the R617
@@TechnoDad I have the movie pixels I'm watching it on my TCL 55R615 in picture action mode nice try it out maybe not in Auro sound but I like the way it sound in Atmos and in the action mode adjusted to personal preference.
Hello, question did you use a Ethernet cable or just used wifi for the tv ??? I need to know because I believe you get max speed from using Ethernet connection versus just wifi especially if I'm going to use the 4k on roku app...is it true or not ??
Does this suffer from the same pixelated screen pattern as the 2017 P series?
I've gone through three sets already in 2 years. So while the picture is great. It's build quality is much to be desired. The lack of HDCP 2.2 support is also a headache. :/
BlazinNSoul uh it does have Hdcp 2.2 support.
Lelouch vi Britannia My mistake I was probably thinking of HDMI 2.1 which isn't even available yet. :)
Techno Dad ...What about using as a computer monitor ???
I should be getting a computer in a few weeks. Will put that in my review
thank You Tecno Dad . if it works good ill be getting one :)
Techno Dad Me too
Tim W its good as a display but with a 60 hz refresh rate and a large screen, when gaming on PC with a 1080 zotac amp extreme gpu Ive noticed clipping on frames even with game mode on. For a monitor, better to get a 27 inch 1440p 144hz or a 4k monitor with 120hz instead.
I have it and its quite good for the 4k hdr and youtube and such, though youll have to have it a bit back so your eyes fov can take the whole screen in.
On ratings tv they gave the 6 series good reviews across the board. Its a good 4k tv, but if you want low latency and input lag.. invest in a gaming monitor.
Nice video
What is the distance between feet if you reverse the feet to the narrower set up please?
techno dad knows wifee is boss to keep life stress free. always, keep everything wife friendly😁
What's the distance between the feet if they are inverted?
You said the upscaling is bad. So are you saying it looks worse than it would on a 1080p tv? Or the same?
for sports it's worse for me
Hi i have my hdmi connected to the tv arc then into the arc of my reciver in the tv settings i disable tv speaker...when i play anything from tv i get no sound but when i switch to my nvidia sheild box i get sound from speakers....why am i not getting sound fron tv apps and my local channels to come out of speakers...???
I checked out the r615 at bestbuy on display, sucks! Didn’t want a fat power button sticking out of the frame, also Corners and edges Blur, and 4K was grainy. I said F’ this and went straight to LG B7A OLED baby🎉
I still love my OLED, especially for movies and gaming
If only it was sold in Australia
Seriously? You put the tv down directly on it’s screen supported by the foam? That’s a no no....
Really? That’s what it says in all the TV instructions.
is roku free to sign up?
Great vid- Huge favor - I have a 55r617 to install- can you tell me the dimensions of the bottom holes of the VESA pattern in relation either to the bottom of the tv or the center of the tv? That is, how high are the bottom VESA holes above the bottom of the tv? Electrician will be here tomorrow 9 AM on the west coast so if you could answer this ASAP it would sure be helpful. We are in the middle of a remodel and don’t have a clean lay down area to unbox my 55r617 or I’d check myself. TIA!
Tony, you're killin' me!! I'll do my best to get you that info!
Techno Dad Sorry TD- I thought you had a 55R61x on hand. Let me know if you have any luck.
TD- The 55R617 has a 200mm X 200mm VESA pattern and the TV without stand is 28” tall. The top two holes are 15” below the top of the TV, or 13” above the bottom.
If only it had hdmi 2.1 I want to get a new TV. I am thinking the next 900 Sony tv. I was also thinking if Sony has their x1 ultimate next year we may be seeing microled or crystal led hit the market
michigan1777 probably next year hdmi 2.1
yeah hdmi 2.1 next year PS5 will have support for HDMI 2.1 and this year is a "waiting" year :)
Yeah, this year is a holding pattern for TVs. At least if you really want HDMI 2.1. For most people they could probably care less.
Well ... i want to buy a new TV, but since i want it for Playstation gaming and PS5 is "around " the corner I think getting a tv with HDMI 2.1 is "future" proof :) Too bad R617 aint available in Sweden and EU. We dont get so many advanced budget TV:s from TCL over here... :(
Congrats on the great content!
Keep up the good job!!! :)
Techno Dad I agree. I ended up upgrading all my audio as you know. Most people just dont know. I found it odd that they announced the new hdmi so close to the new TV launches. It seemed like a poor decision to me. But being that my primary use of my TV is for gaming and watching sports so i'll definitely be hitting next year or the following on a new TV. Sony's motion processing is just unbeatable and the extended dynamic range with the x1 extreme for sdr content makes things look really good. Near hdr quality
What is better for 4K gaming and watching sports, R6 or Sony x900e??
Bapex BILL R615 or 617 have low input response time
@4:21 did you fit the legs in the opposite direction? :D
Yes. Otherwise it wouldn't fit on my dresser.
Is this good for watching sports?
Hi Cody, I haven't checked it out yet. I have one more setup video to do before I take it up to the bedroom.
So torn this is kinda big to replace the 2009 40 inch Sony but it's a huge step up from the 5 series. Hmm. But it's in a fairly sizable master br.
I'll measure my master bedroom later tonight for you.
Techno dad I’ve been looking at the tcl 6 series 55r615 from Best Buy and the refresh rate is 60hz but the one on amazon 55r617 says 120hz refresh rate is there any difference???????
it's 60Hz
Thank you for the settings for the home screen. I have my tv plugged into arc3 is that correct? I have no clue
Loving the tv tho
LOL! Yeah, you can use any HDMI you want. The ARC is for sending audio from the TV to your AVR or soundbar.
Techno Dad plugged into other hdmi inputs you still get audio to avr. Not sure what arc really does/benefits.
How's the input lag ??
Should I upgrade from last years model??
Ninergang not if u have p series.. ive heard there are some bugs in the new six with faint lines between the dim zones. Im upgrading from 4 series to 5 as i dont care abour fald
@techno Dad I wanna by43inch panel for my bedroom but im really confused. No good brand offers high end features in 43inch category but this tcl 5 series and vizio e series are the best I can find right now. Can plz tell me which one do u think is better bcuz I wanna use it both as a monitor for my pc and tv as well. Personally I think roku gives edge to tcl.
if you have a blu ray player like the sony 6500 and stream stuff from that cuz as you know there are all the apps and so on there so would the upscale on the tv be a problem because the sony blu ray player has its own upscaler. Love your review. Thanks in advance for your response. And can you try 720p content lol. i have a bunch of dvds and i would love to know if this would look ok on the tv
do they make a 65-75"? and are these any good?
60 hz ? So judder on 24p ?
So, it will be better to stream Netflix with the Xbox One X instead of the TV app ?
Hi! Yes, I think that will be the answer. Any streaming device should work...Apple TV 4K, even a Roku 4K. The only thing with XB1X is that you're not going to get Dolby Vision. You should get DV with the Apple TV 4K though.
is this tv available only in the US ?
Is this available in my country philippines and roku tv work properly so i can acces netflix etc..
Looking to get the series 4 55 or 65 inch, or series 6 55 inch. What does uniformity mean when people talked about tvs. Have an xbox one x. I hear their is some 4k streaming issues about none hdr content. Have the yamaha rx-v683 as my avr. Would you recomennd the tcl over the entry level hisense or vizio. Alot of quesitons. Your videos are great.
Hi Dan! If you were to play a picture of a grey slide at 3840x2160, you would have to see if the grey is uniform across the entire panel. You can do that with all the colors to see how well the panel is performing. White, grey, red, green, and blue.
thanks for you reply
hey did you remove the plastic film on the back ?
Yes, and there's more plastic on the trims. Top, bottom, and sides.
Is it true the brightness is shit on these?
mobgma no... ppl get sdr brightness and hdr brightness confused often. Obviously the brightness w out for ex: an app you're using isn't HDR or Dolby vision it's obviously going to be brighter, however if you are watching something 4K or hdr the picture will be great. On top of everything with these tv you have to set the tv up its very very simple
@techno dad, great review. Why do you have to connect a Direct TV box if there is an app for it on Roku?
My wife records a whole lot and there's tons of shows on the DVR.
I can't even get AV Audio to play through my speakers. Help!
Hi! Please email me: technodad55 at gmail
Thanks for the recommendation on setting up the stands inverted! Is this something the guide acknowledges ? Or did you find out that it works with your own experimenting? Also , do you feel it makes it less stable and risk of tipping increases? Thanks.
Hi! Actually, my buddy Joelster made a video about turning the feet around. I thought it was genius, so I included it in my video. Not sure about it tipping over. It might make things a little unstable as the feet are more toward the center, but I haven't noticed any kind of swaying or teetering.
Would you mind sharing the measured distance between the stands when they're inverted? Thanks!
Hi my friend i am from Asian country can i order this this TCL R617 in my country please please please reply to me please
