  • TCL's Google TVs had a rough start out of the gate, with software glitches steering focus away from their potentially class-leading picture quality. Now that TCL has issued update patches, how does the 6-Series (R646) model perform? We start our review process by unboxing and setting up the TV, then move on to some first impressions. All told, it looks like a pretty good start.
The TCL 6-Series is available here - bestbuy.7tiv.net/3PXXkB

Thank you for discussing the individual HDMI features, after I saw an article on how the standards no longer mean anything anymore after they changed how labeling the standard works, it'll be much easier for potential customers to understand its features

I got this tv in November via some big Black Friday sales. Had an initial hardware issue with one of the hdmi ports but tcl replaced the tv when a repair guy they sent couldn’t fix it. The picture has been great, and pretty much all bugginess with the interface has subsided when i switched off the quick power on function. Been very happy with the picture quality so far.

Caleb, How much do you love this TV? It’s a bit more stable after the Google updates and HDR is absolutely stunning 90% of the time. Deeper blacks and less blooming than Roku 6-series

I replaced my 65 inch 635 with a 65 inch 646 around Black Friday. Picture beat the 635 by a significant margin in every way but it was an OS train wreck. Returned it. Bought an A80J for $1800. 646 came back on the market just before Christmas at $1000. I was curious so I bought one. Zero OS bugs. AWESOME picture. Zero DSE running the test video. Clarity is amazing on this TV. Got to see it right next to the A80J in my house. Black levels VERY close to A80J. 1/16/22 was my last day to return either TV to Best Buy. A80J went back, kept the R646. To my eye they were equal with the TCL having edge with much more brightness.

Great picture but the OS has too many issues. Also would not stay on with a 720P signal from my cable box. Kept shutting off. I replaced it with a U8G and set it up with AVS forum settings and its superior to the 646 in my very bright room. Brighter HDR and no issues with the OS.

I own a 2018 TCL 6 Roku TV and purchased the 65" version of this 6 Series Google TV along with the TCL Alto 9+ Soundbar for my parents at Christmas. Caleb, you are right. The setup process took a very long time but thankfully the software update seems to keep the Google TV interface fairly stable. I have a Google account and like that system equally with Roku. My father loves the Amazon Fire TV setup and DVR capabilities with the Fire TV Recast so I purchased a Fire TV Stick 4K Max for him too. Everything works well off of one remote. I had a hard time getting the picture settings to stay but seems like it corrected itself. We have been very impressed with picture quality across the board - almost too many settings but I like to play around with them to see what they do.

Just bought the 55" a few days ago. There was an update right off the bat that needed download. So far I really like it, no issues to speak of yet. $600 at Best Buy, for someone new to a 4K tv I watched many videos about different sets under $1,000. Had it narrowed done the 646, Sony X85, and the Hisense U8G. The price was really good for the TCL but I decided if there was an issue with google I could get a 4k streaming stick and life would be fine. The sony and hisense were $150 more and really wasn't sure what spending the extra money was going to get me.

Purchased this R646 Google tv in December based on your like of the product (as well as a few others). Always appreciate your tech evaluation and straight forward approach. I like the television a lot. My old tv was a Panasonic Plasma and it just did not last as I expected (7 years old). The only complaint I have about this tv is there is no browser option...none loaded and none recommended by TCL (as a matter of fact, they advised me not to download any other browser app options). They told me they had contacted Google and recommended an app be added for the tv, but no idea when or if this will ever become reality. So, if I want to watch something like a sporting event that is being streamed over the Internet, I have no way of doing so on this tv. That is unless I use something like an Amazon device (Firestick...which has its own browser), but that defeats the purpose of purchasing this smart tv to begin with. What a shame for Google not to include some option ...chrome...or anything. Would love to hear your comments on this issue.

I've had the TV since launch, basically. Definitely stumbled out of the gate with regards to software/os issues but it is in a much better state now. There are still known issues, especially with eARC but the core features are pretty solid at this point.
One thing that I'll be interested in knowing is how the calibration process goes and if there are any issues. I'm FAR from a pro when it comes to this but I and a few others have noticed that the adjustments don't stick like they should, i.e., you can get a great measurement after calibration but subsequent measurements can differ substantially, even shortly after. Would be great if we could get a word about that.

Pros: excels in contrast with a lighter background. Great color, the motion clarity works pretty well. The software has much improved overtime. Speakers are great! Switching to Bluetooth headset is easy, but weird glitch when attempting to turn those off. Colors are nice and pop. Support for video games and next Gen consoles Is great (recommend pc mode). Arc port always pairs, but not instantly at start up or does a little dance saying it’s not connected then connecting shortly after.
Cons:For outer space scenes there is quite a bit of blooming around the subject. Screen jutter has been an issue with our panel when motion clarity is turned off or set lower. HDR SDR from Apple tv4k is obviously less accurate and washed out when compared to using the installed apps. The Dolby vision and Uhd content from the Apple TV appears to be the same as the installed apps.
So far I’m happy with the tv and the look.

Caleb, first, thanks for your wonderful videos, you are my fav TV reviewer, watching your video is like having a conversation with an old friend...
I ordered this TV a few weeks ago after hearing stellar reviews of picture quality... then I heard of the buggy Google software :( I reached out to TCL and they said they are committed to updating / fixing issues. So I picked it up from BB last weekend. I got the 75" for $1300. The pic looks great, not the black levels of OLED, but close, and for sure brighter. Also, $2500 cheaper than a similar sized OLED...
Anywho, 2 issues for me so far. I've seen a couple movies on Netflix / HBOMax where there was some flashing, as if someone was taking a picture with a flash camera. Not sure if this was tied to the "Adaptive Brightness" Setting...
Other issue, I'm currently using the Digital Optical Out from TV to my SVS Sound Base. While I NEVER had an issue with my old Sony TV and this output, when I hooked up the TCL, and the Logo appears... I heard some loud electrical screech, but only during logo. TCL advised turning on "Quick On", which skips the logo, and thus the screech.... or so I thought... Yesterday, the screech started and stayed on constantly on the Google Home screen... I went to RUclips to stream a video, screech still going, and garbled speech... finally had to reset TV. It did a quick screech during TCL Logo again, but has been acting fine since...
Looking forward to your deep dive and recommended settings... to improve blacks... it gets plenty bright with rich colors :) Thanks again for your videos!

I have the 55” version of this and id say stay away from dolby vision bright. It causes a lot of screen flickering and the black bars in movies look grey and you can see the backlights flickering. Dolby vision dark doesn’t have that issue tho. Love the tv, just there are so many settings that it gets complicated. The update definitely fixed a lot of the bugs tho, so thats a plus. The price is great too. Been thinking of getting a second one for the game room. Even the speakers are pretty good for my use. Borrowed a friends sony soundbar to try one out and didnt notice that much of a difference to make it worth buying one for our living room.

I picked up up this TV in November and have been generally pleased with it. The picture is pretty great, but I feel like blooming has actually gotten worse with some updates? I'm not sure. I get audio desync issues if I bounce between apps too fast - like bouncing to the cable HDMI input after looking at a few apps to see if there's anything I want to watch or if I don't sit on the home screen long enough. Turning it off and on, or sitting at home for a few fixes that. Sometimes it feels a bit underpowered on the UI and slow to react or catch up. Liveable complaints for a TV that I expect to run from whatever the latest version of the NVidia Shield is in a few years.

I agree. The current firmware has, for the most part, eliminated the Google TV foibles. We've had the opportunity to have the Sony A80J OLED in our house along side the TCL 646 for direct comparison. Be assured that the advantages of the OLED are use case specific and minor in our observation. We kept the TCL R646 over the Sony A80J OLED.

I'm considering buying it but I don't know if it makes sense at this point. But I really did love this TV especially with PlayStation 5. Also I have a soundbar in front of my TV and was never able to get the remote to work. PCL should consider having an adjustable height like other TVs that would really help. I also have a lot of problems whenever I turn the TV off I will turn it back on that would be problems with the picture or it would be extremely dim and I never set it up that way. But when it was working the way I set it up it was absolutely amazing. Maybe if it goes on sale or something like that I will consider it but I'm looking to see what TCL comes out with this year period before I go buy this TV and if I do it will definitely be in the 65in. Keep up the great work!

I got one delivered about a week ago. I love it, and already modded it - with Game Pass streaming working on it. My only concern, or complaint, is the lack of ability to lock the display settings. I used the setting option, that's supposed to save it, but it'll still constantly change back to Game Mode, or Low Power Mode, by itself. I usually try to keep it on Smart HDR, but rarely will it stay. After they fix that, I'd recommend it to everyone

I had 2 of these tvs (75 inches) and the picture was off the charts stunning everytime. But first one had a ton of hardware issues with hdmi's blacking out, restarting on its own, cec not working and had to to be unplugged and replugged in daily. The second one was cracked, the remote power button rarely worked and cec still didn't work, but was definitely faster than the first one in every way.... I sent them back and got the lg c1. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss, the picture, and Google tv. This is was the TV that made me believe in mini led and tcl is king at it. To give you this picture at $1300 vs another company who gives it to you for $2800.... Insane value.

I bought my 55” TCL R646 for $700 new about and I also bought a 55” Samsung QN90A for $925 open box, I only need one of these TVs and I can’t decide which one to keep. The Samsung has better blooming algorithm and more saturated colors both in game mode and movies. Motion is about the same on both tvs. The Samsung with the filmmaker mode is definitely better for movies and it’s not available on the TCL which is a bummer. I do like that the TCL has 2 hdmi 2.1 ports and for me they both work fine at 120hz with my Xbox series x, and the Samsung only had one and it’s also eARC which is a bummer. The picture clarity on the TCL is better than the Samsung. So with all that being said I really can’t decide which one to pick because they are really close in price (what I paid for them) and quality. Please help me decide between Samsung QN90A or TCL R646.
I should mention this is going to be the kids tv for gaming and watching movies and series in the game room so I decided to go for mini LED instead of OLED which I have in my bedroom and in my office 65” C1 and 55” CX.

@@kenyaneegreen4208 I have a ps5 and a series x and I've not had any issues like that that comes to mind, anytime I did have a very distinct bug happen a hard reset would fix it like most tech, I would take a guess that if there isn't just something different going on with your TV that maybe the settings on the tv or the console are incorrect. It took me ages to get my sound system to do atmos for example and it came down to the CEC connection and a setting on series x not toggled because I didn't think it was necessary, hope this helps.

I already have the Roku version and am very satisfied with its look and features. It is however a TCL TV and it looks almost exactly the same so I`m sure it's just as good if not just a little bit upgraded. As long as you don't pick that Android TV crap you're good to go.

I’ve owned this tv since Release, it was pretty buggy before the updates, if your looking for issues I would test the “sharpness” and would play around with HBO max, I love this tv and I think it’s the best bang for its buck, I’ve owned the Hisense U7G and U8G and i returned them both for this tv. Only issues I’ve notice is that the sharpness doesn’t seem to work right? Or maybe it’s the mode I have it on and HBO drops time to time but haven’t had that issues with Netflix or Hulu. Looking forward to a full reset and best settings to have it on

I have the 75" version of the R646 that I purchased right before X-mas 2021 and Google UI issues aside, the picture quality is spectacular! However, being a Roku user as I enjoy its interface much better, with my Roku Ultra connected, the picture quality is not near as crisp even though the channel displays an HDR signal. I have exhausted all my resources trying to troubleshoot this issue to no avail, yet. I have tried two different Roku Ultra units, messed with all possible Roku settings, I use ultra-high speed HDMI cables, tried different HDMI inputs whether on the back of my Sony STR-DH790 receiver or directly to the TV's HDMI inputs, even set my HDMI signal on my receiver to "enhanced" and updated the software on all devices but just can't get it right. I primarily stream Fubo TV but this and virtually any other app I view (with the exception of say a 4K HDR video on the regular RUclips site) has a less than stellar picture compared to Google TV. Has anyone else experienced this as well? I'd really like to stay with my Roku interface...

I’ve had this unit since September when it launched. I actually traded in my U8G for it because of panel issues with the Hisense. The UI has bugs certainly, but it’s gotten better and I adore the picture. It might not have the specular “pop” that the U8G did, but overall I think it’s a cleaner more accurate picture, especially for film content, which is what I care about most.

The only issue I have now is that when the TV goes into sleep mode when the content is paused and left on for sometime then while turning on it exists the content and needs to restart the content watching again. Apart from this and some laging interface, the TV is good.

I bought the R646 on 9/7/21 to replace a 5 series that the panel died on. Luckily, I have a whole house electronics warranty through my company, so I wasn't too upset. We have encountered some issues with apps restarting, but those have been resolved with new updates. We have three TCL's, 1 new 5 series, one of last years 6, and this R646. All three are great TV's for the money. We do like the Roku more than Google, but that's not that big of a deal. The picture on the R646 is very good. There is some minor blooming, but that is sort of expected on non-OLED. We still have a 2016 65" Samsung JU71000, which still gives TCL's a run for the money, but it's a little small for the room it is in, so I'll be replacing it when the new models come out this year. Looking at the new Samsung, TCL, or maybe the Hisense

I got 635 since there was such a problem with 646; it was not justifiable to have a bad first impression to cloud everything that it had going for it; 635 was a safer option and not sure if software has much of a deal with the black crushing with SDR but these TVs are so heavy that it needs to be said that the bottom bulge makes it horrible to mount on a wall cause it feels so bottom heavy and hard to grab so you inherently want to grab the thinner screen area which can easily damage and distort it.
Roku isn’t a big deal breaker but the UI is really weird when paired with Apple TV cause all the UI from the settings has a weird continuity with tvOS

    • @brandontoyer6077
      @brandontoyer6077 2 года назад +1

Local contrast = local dimming. On my set, high gives the best blacks but more blooming. Low isn't too far off but exposes some light leakage on my screen.
Black Stretch - in my investigation, this doesn't do anything unless activated in conjunction with dynamic contrast. Darkens the picture slightly.
Micro contrast - adds some depth to the image by controlling the areas of shadow. It does add some pop to the image but negatively affects skin tones so I leave it off.
Dynamic Brightness - works fairly well when I've tried it. I tend to leave it off, though.

I bought this tv when Best Buy put it on sale/clearance for $1299. At that price for a 75 inch tv with the gaming features I wanted, I had to pull the trigger. So far after a two weeks, I have already noticed that 1 of the hdmi 2.1 ports doesn’t work properly, i have to restart the tv at least once a day usually after going from an app back to antenna tv as the sound gets cut out. I have gotten kicked out of an app or the tv restarts itself on several occasions. The panel itself is OK and picture quality is fine but nothing jaw dropping. I’ll definitely be taking the set back, but there isn’t much at this price point to replace it with. The Hisense U7G is 100 less and can be ordered but not in stock. The Sony 85j is same price and the 90j is $400 more. I’m tempted to drop back to 65 inch and grab a lg c1 and call it a day. At least I know that tv has no issues (have a 48 inch and it’s been flawless).
