The foundation of this song is an old hymn, as other have commented. This hymn is one of the first hymns I learned. In September 1973 our old king died. Next day at school, all children were gathered in the aula. Our principal announced the death of our king, we all sang this hymn "Härlig är jorden" and then we cheered for our new king.
I did my military service at the Livgardet regiment and must say I am proud to have been a tiny part of the regiment's 500 year long (so far) service of the swedish crown. Edit: I just want to add that at 9:34, right after the current kings motto which you noted, he sings "De gör vad som synes omöjligt" ("they do what appears to be impossible") this is the swedish translation of "Possunt nec posse videntur", the motto of Livgardet.
I am from Sweden and the music sounded very familiar to me, but I couldn't place it right away. Then I read Kim Clements comment and the coin dropped, but I know it as a psalm that people sing during mass in church - "Härlig är jorden..." (Glorious is the Earth). I can not find anything wrong in what you say, and the abscense of other comments correcting any faults is a good indication that you are spot on. Must have a look at the original video to see if I recognise any names in the credits. And btw, in the trailer that Sabaton posted on instagram they say that on the last day of shooting they finished at 2am, so it is a very long and tedious process to make a video like this. Cheers / B.
When I watched the music video premier I also thought immediately that the melody sounded familiar. It took me the whole song and a few minutes after that to figure out what song it was. I only knew the Finnish name for it and had to Google what the name is in Swedish.
@@mrryden25 And the music then further harks back to Hoffmann von Fallersleben (that dude which poem is the base for the German anthem)... funny how small the world again is...both in general and in terms of musical inspiration.
Im from finland and we also have this song as a finnish version that was immediately recognizable. A religious hymn yes. Very common one. I think it might be popular at christmas season.
Interesting fact about the infantry regiment I 13 in Falun (in Sabatons home town). In this regiment (there I did my military service as well) we had a very special way of taking orders (the only regiment in Sweden doing this). Instead of saying ”Yes captain” (or whatever officers rank) we always answered ”shall be done captain”, this also go back several hundred years back in history! Note: Livgardet is not the same regiment as I 13 in Falun! (More to explain the mentality of the people living in Dalarna) 💪💪 Why Gustav Vasa recruited men from Dalarna: at that time Gustav Eriksson (Eriksson was his original surname) fled away from the danish (and swedish pro danish) soldiers, and at that time it was forbidden for farmers in Sweden to have weapons at home. But Gustav Eriksson (Vasa) knew that the farmers in Dalarna gave a f**k in that law, because people in Dalarna are known to be stubborn and proud people so they did as they wanted themselves anyway. So he fled to Dalarna to seek shelter and support among the locals in Dalarna to fight back the danish and pro danish soldiers and I think it was at that point the first 16 men of his royal guard was recruited 😊 You should also dig into the Battle of Narva (mentioned in the text) its considered to be the greatest victory in Swedish history!
As a Swede Im starting to cry when I hear this one. It's so immensely powerful and it's such a great tribute to our Livgardet that have defended our homeland for 500 years. The lyrics with the Belt crossing, the victory over the Russians at Narva 1700 and so on just adds to it. Just incredible.
There is soo many references in both the video and the music. Of course the picture of Wasa as the founder of the regiment. But also the location. The royal mansion where the king decided to start the regiment, where the regiment stil today have the cermony when the soldiers are rewarded with their beret and the touches that they place at the same place. In the aong you have the hymn Härlig är jorden” än they also have a line from the hymn our father “fader vår”.. but changed it to our national father. Also the text ”De gör vad som synes omöjligt” translated to “they do what appears to be impossible, and that is the motto of the regiment.. some of the famous battle they won and the list goes on and on.. this is a total tribute to the lifeguards. Well done Sabaton and well done Tank for a great reaction
You encountered another thing Sabaton does: making you patriotic about a country you have no ties to I hope someone will come up with a word for that -Sisu
"Empathy"? "Identifying with a character"? "Getting into the music" If you wanted to be sarcastic, could you call it "Stockholm Syndrome"? (While I'm an idiot about languages other than English, I do enjoy playing with words and how they can be mixed like cooking ingredients to make different concepts.)
Well if the Swedish people do need one thing these days, it's a whole lot of patriotism. Say that you're proud of your country today and you are a racist... Sadly.
Not ONLY in funerals though??? I mostly hear that Psalm besides "Den blomstertid nu kommer" and "En vänlig grönskas rika dräkt" so I belive its used just as much as a summer psalm..when summer is arriving
@@Glisern Not correct though as a Swede I can say its a old Danish psalm sung both in Sweden and Germany. Check up the background and you will see (I thought it was Swedish origin)
@@Flokarl1 I guess the melody can be considered trad. There are several lyrics and now one more by Sabaton? Or is it the text same as in the Swedish psalm book? Anyway, great song from Sabaton!
As a Scanian (From the south part of Sweden) this song fills me with a kinda weird nostalgia. Crossing the Belt in Danmark allowed Karl X Gustav to lay siege to Copenhagen in 1658 and the peace treaty the Danish had to sign was what made us in Skåne Swedish. Also the Battle of Lund 1676 was mentioned in this song, and it was in Lund I saw these guys live for the first time.
"I see that Joakim has no knee to bang on so he just beats the shit out of the table instead" You have such a way with words🙃. Also, imagine crediting FLOOR JANSEN'S HUSBAND as "extra".
It is.. we call it Härlig är Jorden translatef to how wonderful the earth is. Is is one of the most famous hymn in Sweden. So my guess is that it will make it so much easier for every swede to sing along to
Livgardet is one of few branches in the swedish military that have never updated or received a new motto their current one is "Possunt nec posse videntur" (De gör det till synes omöjliga/They do what Looks impossible) that they have used since day one.

I've seen some Swedish fans saying that the chorus sounds an awful lot like the melody of a hymn called Beautiful Savior. Must be a pretty well known one over there.
A nice detail is that the last chorus after the solo is in a major key, while the first ones (not counting the intro) is in minor, mirroring the grandious and more glorious finale.
Hej! Bravo! Congratulations on an awesome review here! Your attention to detail and key points are amazing. As a speaker of Swedish, I can say that your English subtitles are quite spot-on, as is your pronunciation of the song's name, Livgardet, right from the start. Swedish is one of the most beautiful languages in existence - maybe you may become inspired to learn some of it to become a Swede, LOL? This new Sabaton song and video is a blockbuster, one of the best they have ever done. This is not surprising given their ability to turn history into true art.
This is such a lovely song ! Telling the history of the Swedish royal guard, and just their vocal and riffs are perfect! Greetings from a danish royal guard!
The melody for this song is from an old chrismas psalm, from german, tp danaish, and then popularized by norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø. It's called Deilig er jorden
Is there anything better than a Saturday with new Tank-Sabaton and a Chase-Nightwish double header? I think not! Your enthusiasm and energy are contagious and just what I needed today!! Awesome job again Tank!
Great reaction man! I'm Swedish and it's weird how we're not taught this or a lot of Swedish history in school. As far as I can remember, we stopped reading about "older" Swedish history in about 5th grade. It's both interesting and way too important to leave out of the education. Glad to see Sabaton doing their part to educate everyone! On another note, you gotta react to their song "Metal Crüe" (probably most enjoyable live) it's a banger!
I love how much dedication that goes in to finding out the facts about each of the song you are listening to. Fleshing out the details makes it so satisfying watching your reactions. Great video!
Not quite as powerful as En Livstid I Krig for me, but this song definitely has some similarities to that one. And I am so for it, because En Livstid I Krig is my favorite Sabaton song ever made. Hope they keep this up.

Just a lesson on how good Sabaton is for history. I looked up the same list the day the song came out and was shocked to find the US had comparatively old continuous units. In a nation where we’re lucky to have history going back to 1776, it’s mind blowing to see that two Massachusetts and one Pennsylvania militia regiments hold constant service with pride as National Guard units.
Imagine the officer of this unit use this tune at a inspection/parade in the festivities and the soldiers hearing it for the first time/fully realize the context
You are 100% correct on the melody theory. A lot of swedish folk songs have this very same feeling to them, melodic wise. I suppose that is because Sweden used to be heavily influenced by church anthems and hymns,

Before Gustavus Adolphus carved out the Swedish Empire, it was Gustav I and his 16 bodyguards who forged the destiny of the Swedish people as an independent people!
not really, you had danish and german mercenaries, the hanseatic league, parts of the swedish high council, noble families and so on as well as Gustav Vasa and 16 men.
Seeing you write about Dalarna is just weirdly awesome since I grew up right in the middle of it. It's the most iconically Swedish place in all of Sweden. Also, fun fact, one of my best friends literally lived right next door to Sabaton's drummer at the time, Daniel Mullback.
The melody is in the Finnish hymnal, Hymn 30. "Maa on niin kaunis." Originating in Germany 1842. Noted down by Bernhard Severin Ingemann 1850. First translated into Finnish by Hilja Haahti between 1886 and 1903. Current translation added into the book in 1986. Used during Christmas services. Maa on niin kaunis, Kirkas Luojan taivas, ihana on sielujen toiviotie. Maailman kautta kuljemme laulain, Taivasta kohti matka vie. Kiitävi aika, vierähtävät vuodet, miespolvet vaipuvat unholaan. Kirkasna aina sielujen laulun taivainen sointu säilyy vaan. Enkelit ensin paimenille lauloi, sielusta sieluhun kaiku soi: Kunnia Herran, maassa nyt rauha, kun Jeesus meille armon toi. I'm certain everyone from the Nordic lands knows the melody.
I am extra excited for this music video, because it was recorded close to where I live (about a 20 minute drive). It is also where the local school prom is held every year, so I have been there a few times :)
Awesome vid as always! The melody is an scandinavian hymn, originally written by the danish author Bernhard Severin in Ingemann 1800s. Translated to "Devine is the Earth". "Härlig är jorden" has strong ties in Sweden and to most swedes in some way. Mainly through church, ceremonies like funerals. There're plenty national folk melodies they could actually pick, but this fits the purpose so well to an anthem. Cause it really is an anthem to Livgardet, as themselves said, it's hard to pick events and contexts out of something thats 500yo.
As a swede i'm really surprised with how on point your guesses are before you get the info ^^ I for sure feel strangely patriotic after hearing this! The music of the song i very reminescent of our national anthem at times which i assume is intentional.
You totally read my mind! After yesterday's premiere, thought of you reviewing this song. When I got a notification almost fell over, lol. Amazing amount of research into Swedish history and customs, Tank. This is why you're the best!!!! Thank you so much! 🤘😎🤘
This song definitely has an anthem feel to it. It's going to kill, live with the Swedish crowds. You should react to No Bullets Fly. Probably my favorite story in a Sabaton song, and not just the event itself but the aftermath and it's legacy as well.

This is from a comment on the official video: "The melody is based on a Christian hymn know as "Härlig är Jorden" (Psalm 297) in Swedish. It seems like the hymn came about in melody as a folksong in Germany and was called "Schönster Herr Jesu, Herrscher aller Erden”. It was later in the 1850s changed by the Danes and called "Pilgrimssang" or "Dejlig er jorden" and is probably how it spread to Sweden. In English the melody is known as "Fairest Lord Jesus"." And I know the melody from local hymn here as well. On a side note, I don't think this single will be on the new album, just like Bismarck wasn't released on The Great War .. it's basically a way to get some hype building for the next release
"Fairest Lord Jesus"!!!! AH HA!!!! I knew I knew that melody from a hymn. I've been digging through comments for... well... only a couple minutes. But it seemed much longer to me in my obsessed state of mind. It was going to drive me up a wall not being able to remember the lyrics (as I've known them) to that melody. You're a life saver, @Andre De Ath!
The melody in the beginning is called the Crusaders' Hymn (I think it also is the hommage you already suspected) and I can only speak for the region I come from (danish/german border), but the melody is generally known obviously with other lyrics. Thought it was an interesting choice.
The second after you said let's go youtube decided to play the entire song as an ad. Made me very confused, but I won't complain about hearing it twice in a row.
That melody you are talking about is an old melody from the 1700s. In Denmark alot of sabaton fans were confused about this. Because there is a song we usually sing at funerals that uses that melody called "Dejlig er Jorden"
Eluveitie were the first band i saw live, they were the openers on the first sabaton show i ever went to, so great choice of background music at the start ;)
The melody from the chorus is the same as "Härlig är jorden" psalm 297. It was translated into Swedish during the 1800s. It's one of the most popular psalms over time. 😀

The choir melody from the song bears resemblance to a Christian hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus", also known as "Beautiful Savior". In Sweden, the hymn's melody is also used in Psalm 297 - "Härlig är jorden" ("Lovely is the Earth").
The melody is a Swedish psalm "Härlig är jorden", Being brought upin a very religous town I recoognized it immidiately. Im not religous so I lie this a lot better!!
Side Note, Gustav Vasa also did the first Vasa Loppet, a long, loooong journey on skis, 90 kilometers long (roughly 56 miles). Dont know the reason why he did it, but now its an annual race, held the first weekend in March =) Cheers on your vids man! Keep em coming!
Nice job translating (well, adding it to the video if nothing else) and digging into the details, impressive! Love how thorough you are in checking stuff! This feels like kind of a different Sabaton song to me, it's not musically my favorite, but it's powerful in its own way. Livgardet shared the song on their official Facebook page btw, so it's got a seal of approval from the namesake unit. ^^
The melody in the beginning is from the swedish hymn 297 - "Härlig är jorden". Or "Lovely is the earth/Fairest lord Jesus" in english. I knew I had heard it before. I might even have sung it a long time ago when I was part of a choir. 👍
I think they were going for a Symphonic Power Metal style in addition to what they usually do. And I really like how they did it too. Sabaton is an awesome band!!
Karl X and Karl XI were the kings that started the carolean era with disciplined soldiers a bascically standing army funded by the farmers of the empire of Sweden trained in small unit combat constantly but required to train in annual "wargames" and drills in their respective regiments/batallions. Karl X was a veteran from the 30 years war and was one of the swedish commanders after Gustav II Adolf died at Lützen 1632. He wasnt named king until 1652-53 though from what i recall. But the major reorganization of the standing elite Caroealn army happened during Karl XI reign. Karl XI was known as the "Greycape" he rode from town to town mustering men and oversaw their training regiment and also visited farms to make sure everyone was well fed etc. The only Swedish king that really couldd pop up anywhere unexpected except for his more famous son Karl XII.
It's "Psalm 31 - Härlig är jorden" that they borrowed big parts of the melody from. It is indeed quite a beloved song around here used both around Christmas and at funerals.
It was my son who introduced me to sabaton and also hammerfall. Now im the one looking for concerts and vodeos to show him. This Livgardet video he show to me though.

(More to explain the mentality of the people living in Dalarna) 💪💪
Why Gustav Vasa recruited men from Dalarna: at that time Gustav Eriksson (Eriksson was his original surname) fled away from the danish (and swedish pro danish) soldiers, and at that time it was forbidden for farmers in Sweden to have weapons at home. But Gustav Eriksson (Vasa) knew that the farmers in Dalarna gave a f**k in that law, because people in Dalarna are known to be stubborn and proud people so they did as they wanted themselves anyway. So he fled to Dalarna to seek shelter and support among the locals in Dalarna to fight back the danish and pro danish soldiers and I think it was at that point the first 16 men of his royal guard was recruited 😊
You should also dig into the Battle of Narva (mentioned in the text) its considered to be the greatest victory in Swedish history!
That’s wild! Thank you!
I'm born and raised in Dalarna and I can confirm that we are a stubborn and proud people as we should be, because it is a wonderful place to live in.
Could it been a reason for the difference? So that nobody could fake their way thru the livgarde to reach the king?
As a Swede Im starting to cry when I hear this one. It's so immensely powerful and it's such a great tribute to our Livgardet that have defended our homeland for 500 years. The lyrics with the Belt crossing, the victory over the Russians at Narva 1700 and so on just adds to it. Just incredible.
the belt crossing is in denmark

The melody is from a very famous Swedish psalm called "Härlig är jorden" (Glorious is the Earth). Commonly sung at funerals.
Not ONLY in funerals though??? I mostly hear that Psalm besides "Den blomstertid nu kommer" and "En vänlig grönskas rika dräkt" so I belive its used just as much as a summer psalm..when summer is arriving
The psalm is originally German, and the tune is an older Italian tune 'Crusader's Hymn'.
German psalm. Also sung in Norway and Denmark
@@Glisern Not correct though as a Swede I can say its a old Danish psalm sung both in Sweden and Germany. Check up the background and you will see (I thought it was Swedish origin)

I lived very close to Livgardet outside of Kungsängen when I was younger. It was always nice to see the military on the road and hearing them exercise in the distance from the place I lived.

Spain actually has the oldest military unit that is still active Infantry Regiment "Inmemorial del Rey" No. 1 it’s been around for over 700 years
Second is the 1st infantry regiment of france formed in 1497
Third is papal Swiss guard formed in 1509
Fourth is the 9th infantry regiment also of Spain
Fifth is the livgardet of Sweden
Just a lesson on how good Sabaton is for history. I looked up the same list the day the song came out and was shocked to find the US had comparatively old continuous units. In a nation where we’re lucky to have history going back to 1776, it’s mind blowing to see that two Massachusetts and one Pennsylvania militia regiments hold constant service with pride as National Guard units.
Imagine the officer of this unit use this tune at a inspection/parade in the festivities and the soldiers hearing it for the first time/fully realize the context
Yes, I really enjoyed this! Thank you! 🤘🤘
You are 100% correct on the melody theory. A lot of swedish folk songs have this very same feeling to them, melodic wise. I suppose that is because Sweden used to be heavily influenced by church anthems and hymns,

Maa on niin kaunis,
Kirkas Luojan taivas,
ihana on sielujen toiviotie.
Maailman kautta
kuljemme laulain,
Taivasta kohti matka vie.
Kiitävi aika,
vierähtävät vuodet,
miespolvet vaipuvat unholaan.
Kirkasna aina
sielujen laulun
taivainen sointu säilyy vaan.
Enkelit ensin
paimenille lauloi,
sielusta sieluhun kaiku soi:
Kunnia Herran,
maassa nyt rauha,
kun Jeesus meille armon toi.

Great job with the Tank Facts!
In English the melody is known as "Fairest Lord Jesus"."
And I know the melody from local hymn here as well.

Let me help you there: The hymn/melody is from a Christian Psalm. When I first heard this, it sounded like going to church for me xD

Awesome reaction.
Side Note, Gustav Vasa also did the first Vasa Loppet, a long, loooong journey on skis, 90 kilometers long (roughly 56 miles). Dont know the reason why he did it, but now its an annual race, held the first weekend in March =)

Definitely a national anthem vibe to the song which is very fitting given the topic.
Really like this and intrigued how this works in English
Thx for a great reaction again.

Wherever the road leads
Around our king the guard stand
For country and kingdom they sacrifice their life
For Sweden in the time
Where the king goes
They do what seem impossible, whatever the future holds
