You have to be the best singer of any of the vocal coaches on RUclips. Is there a single vocal technique you can't just casually pull off? You're also a great teacher and have a fun sense of humor. This is easily my favorite RUclips vocal coach channel.

I got to sing with Bobby in college. He was at Western Michigan University for a master class; I was a vocal jazz performance major. This was right after he sang "Another Night In Tunisia," on the Manhattan Transfer's album "Vocalese," the song itself based on the Dizzy Gillespie track "Night In Tunisia." Amazing guy. Ridiculously talented.

I had the immense good fortune to see Bobby live in his early days, about 1987 ( _Simple Pleasures_ and "Don't Worry, Be Happy" hadn't yet come out). He walked on stage resplendent in a white leisure suit and open-necked red shirt, short-haired (his trademark dreads came along in the 90s), and proceeded to hold a theater of eleven hundred people silent and rapt with a bare stage, a microphone, and his voice and body. He did many of his earliest popular songs: "Blackbird," "Donna Lee," "I Feel Good," "From Me to You," ... and then he invited three or four audience members to join him on stage to perform free jazz dance as he sang his original "Thinkin' About Your Body." (You commented on his use of language? Much of it's straight scatting.)
When my daughter was small, we discovered the Windam Hill "Rabbit Ears" recordings of classic children's stories with musical beds, and were dee-LIGHT-ed at Bobby's performances of his original music for Kipling's "The Elephant's Child," "How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin," and "How the Camel Got His Hump," underneath Jack Nicholson's readings.
Of course, Bobby's not JUST a vocal artist; he's also been a conductor and a composer. And that he continues to perform into his seventies is a testament to both his talent and his skill. (Side notes: his father was an operatic baritone, his mother was a singer and voice teacher, and two of his children are also musicians.)
I'll second (or third, or fiftieth) the recommendation to react to "Blackbird." (Here's a contemporary recording of it: ruclips.net/video/37DHXrFfwrE/видео.html ) That was the first track of his I ever heard, played on KUT-FM in Austin's _Eklektikos_ radio show, by the legendary host John Aielli; it must have been 1984 or 1985, and ere then I'd had no idea a human voice could DO what Bobby did.

Thanks for reacting to Bobby McFerrin. Knowing your channel for a while I was NOT surprised that you not only know how he produces all those beautiful noises, but you can produce them yourself, too. That is something I love about your channel. ❤
I learned about Bobby in the early 80s in a very important time: when you are 20 years old, out of school and have to decide how your adult life should look like. I listened to Bobby and decided to live an nonconformist life. I never regretted that decision. And as you said, singing like this is not what people expect. But it is important. (And it is never too late to start)
Some in the chat recommended his improvisation with Richard Bona, same concert. Yes, please. :) 👍

    - singing karaoke (for 10 years now) has taught me A LOT of things and with your help I have learnt a lot more about my voice that I didn't even knew I was doing (and THANK YOU for that)
    - my poor mom died at 82 having lived in fear for as long as I can remember, and she was NOT happy, unfortunately; luckily she died surrounded by those who loved her
    - I'm almost 50 y.o. and it's been REALLY HARD to keep my inner child alive for that long (i.e. spontaneous illusion, not having fear of everything, etc.), but h*ll, it's worth it!!! (P.S.: never needed alcohol for anything, apart from wounds and rebellious stickers)

My parents also saw him some years ago at a choir festival, at a concert/masterclass. He was doing some amazing work with these younger singers, helping them and nudging them to let go of their voices and sing what they feel in the moment. My parents says that there were also several choirs in the audience and at one point they joined, so the rest of the audience was just surrounded by choirs, singing and riffing with each other. Gah, can only imagine how it was to be there! :D

I bought his second album The Voice when I was 19 without knowing anything about him other than having read a positive review in Downbeat magazine. This is years before "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and that album was the first acapella jazz album of a single solo vocalist. His father was a baritone soloist with the Metropolitan Opera and his mother was a voice teacher, so he comes by his voice naturally but he truly chose his own musical path. He is one of my heros and Jack Black has spoken deeply of his love for Mr. McFerrin.

Thanks so much Lolli for your wonderful videos which always cheer me up. I discovered Bobby McFerrin thanks to another RUclipsr nearly 3 years ago and had the same reaction of astonishment and joy as you did - but without your fun and insightful vocal analysis of course! I listened to tracks off the album Simple Pleasures for months. I even tried (and enjoyed failing at) singing Drive over and over which made the long walk to get my regular takeaway pass by so quickly - and made some passers by give me strange looks! Circlesongs is also a truly special record. Bobby, we're not worthy!
I could not agree more with your message of breaking free from conformity. I've always wanted to express myself and had artistic urges but sadly have not embraced them as much as I would have liked. Still, witnessing the passion of artists such as yourself and Bobby help keep my dreams alive.
Just one more thing. I'm not normally one for crude jokes but "Bountiful Beaver"... need I say more?! Oh, maybe I do if it's just a UK slang thing... Ahem, my apologies. I need to get out more!

I saw him about 08 at a 3 day jazz festival for highschool kids, many HS bands and choirs attend. Friday night Bobby gets on stage and does 3 songs, then sits on the edge of the stage a invites his friend up, they chit chat ('been a while since I've seen you' 'how you been' ect.) They do a couple of songs, then Bobby dismissed his friend, sits there while his friend goes back to his seat, looks out at thousands of HS jazz musicians an says...
    "Who's next?"
The first kid up didn't even give himself enough time to think of what he was going to do, Bobby was awesome as he performed with 5 or 6 kids. I have the utmost respect for him since that night! He knew he was sitting in front of the next generation of jazz performers and helping them along their lifes journey.

He also does crazy good overtone singing, he's a human polyphone. At his concerts, he encourages musicians to bring instruments, he has a portion of his concerts where he walks through the audience, and he displays his mastery of mimicking musical instruments. He'll have you play something, and he'll sing it right back to you, and sound almost exactly like your instrument. It's really a sight to see. If you weren't watching him do it, you wouldn't believe a human voice could sound like that. It's incredible. McFerrin is the quintessential O.G.

    Stunning talent. I never knew!
Perfect pitch. Huge range. Just Wow! And, sounded like a, or snatches of, various West African languages, even the click of the Sthern Bushmen. But then he keeps just diving off into gibberish, where he's just following the sounds and rhythms for their own beauty and cool placements' sake! Amazing.❤

Lolli my dear, thank you for introducing me to this side of Bobby McFerrin. Wow, I was knocked for a loop. I'd never heard more than Don't Worry be Happy. You have expanded my mind and given me more ear candy. Bless You Dear. * Smiles *

I recently watched an old video of Michael Winslow who's perhaps best known for playing Motormouth Jones in the movie Police Academy.
He doesn't do music but the sounds he's able to imitate are incredible

That section at 24:30 with the patterned rhythmic accentuations: that's just trumpet/brass double- and triple-tonguing techniques. It's incredibly cool to me hearing this applied to vocal work at this level of expertise: I've tried mixing the two when messing around, but never got too much success out of it. I'll have to try more!
If you're interested in an absolutely incredible example of this technique, look up Raphael Mendez playing either "La Virgen de la Macarena" or "Flight of the Bumblebee" (or the "Green Hornet Theme," either works). He was also brilliant in his circular breathing application, often playing for minutes straight without pausing. There are some crazy, crazy talented people out there.

Lolliiiii! I wondered if he had a connection with the Khoisan languages but I couldn't find one. I found that he played with so many jazz greats which I wasn't aware of. It's amazes me how you can reproduce what you are hearing whether it's beat boxing or opera or metal. Your skill and talent never ends. You are the lyrebird of music. Thanks for the show. 💕

I've bought every CD and DVD that he has produced when they were released. I once had a dream in which he sang words to an entire Scherzo movement of what sounded like a Dvorak Symphony.

I loved this. Made me travel back in time. In 2009, Bobby was the main festival artist at the St Olav festival in Trondheim (Norway) and performed 5 quite different concerts - 5 different vibes. It was amazing. However, the most crazy concert was, in my opinion, the first. The opening concert in Nidarosdomen (yes, the cathedral where Aurora made her famous concert in 2017 (also arranged by the St Olav festival)). In the final stage of this concert he was picking people from the audience to come and sing with him. And one of these happened to be Gunhild Sundli (the vocalist of the band Gåte - that you may have heard as Norway’s contribution to Eurovision in 2024). That interaction is to this day one of the best, crayziest and most memorable musical experiences I’ve ever had…

Lolli, you just made me so very happy checking out a legend. In the 80s before he became famous with "that song" and then took up conducting orchestras, had a performance routine of a one-man Wizard of Oz. He literally took you through the entire movie hitting all the music numbers and sound F/x. That is when he made a big impression me. To enjoy his fantastic range, please check out "Bobby McFerrin & The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra - My Audiobiography (2012)" and also one of my favs "Say Ladeo" from his Vocabularies album. That said, any LIVE perfomace by him will leave you happy. He is truly a treasure to music. Happy singing everyone! Best, Patrick 😊
