In this video, I (a contemporary voice specialist) analyse Heilung's "Anoana" on the fly whilst watching and hearing it for the first time.
Watch me lose my mind over extreme vocal techniques but also lose myself in the raw emotion presented. I analyse their expert vocal performances, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques (from an anatomical perspective) and ultimately tell you what I think makes them so unbelievably great.

The language isn’t modern. They use proto-Norse, proto-German, etc.
If you want to hear Maria using some more, and different, techniques, listen to “In Maidjan” live.
    Also, “Traust” live.

I had the blessing of seeing Heilung live last year and it was an overwhelming experience. I cried for half the time as it felt like every song was hammering out decades of trauma I'd held in my body and never knew it. The crowd was absolutely loving and caring for each other & the Earth.
My particular ritual (they are very much more a ritual than a concert) was incredibly powerful when they had the Catawba Tribe of Native Americans precede them with sanctifying the space with sage before performing their own blessing. Then they returned at the end for a full out dance and song combined with Heilung's own ending ritual for a beautiful combined experience. Again, more tears.
I will absolutely go again if given the chance to.

Lovely reaction! As other's have said seeing them live is an amazing experience. They call their shows Rituals and that is exactly what they are. When I saw them live it was an incredible spiritual journey. They started with a blessing and this reading
Remember, that we all are brothers
All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind
We all descend from the one great being
    That was always there
Before people lived and named it
    Before the first seed sprouted
On a technique note I believe Maria is singing in a Kulning style when she is singing those high piercing notes. The studio/music video version I think it is more obvious she is singing it that traditional nordic style used by women to call home cattle from the fields. Very powerful!

Thanks for the fantastic analysis. Maria Franz is a treasure, and the whole ensemble does amazing work setting a signature tone. I haven't seen them live yet, but a lot of their live recordings on RUclips have excellent sound editing like you noted in this one.
While I'm delighted to see more people finding and loving Heilung, I am a little sad you came in with Anoana. It's from their more recent album, which is IMO their most "modern" one: it's the first they use stringed instruments, chord structures familiar from Medieval Christian music, etc. Their earlier work, especially Lifa, feels a lot more prehistoric/neo-Pagan/whatever you want to call it. It's fun to start with the band's early work and watch their style evolve.
Since you want to hear more, I'd love to see you analyze something from that album. In Maidjan was the first song the group (including Maria) did live in concert, and it shows off a lot of the band's early strengths well. Krigsgaldr is also a great track. Though really, I'd love it if you watched the whole 75-minute concert and reacted to the whole thing. Your appreciation of all aspects of the performance is really rare and I'd love to see it applied to a full ritual.

The lyrics for this piece are mainly taken from bracteates: golden, circular coins or amulets found in Northern Europe that date from the 4th to 7th centuries CE. They are often fitted with a decorated rim and loop, which indicates that they were meant to be worn and perhaps provide protection, fulfil wishes or for divination.
The bracteates feature a very significant iconography influenced by Roman coinage. They were predominantly made from Roman gold, which was given to the North Germanic peoples as peace money.
In Anoana, the listener has the chance to delve into a collection of likely encoded spells from the Migration Period and get a touch of magic from the Dark Ages.
The intention of the piece is to playfully reconnect to an incantational language of a period where the North was richer in gold than any other region. Our forefathers presumably enjoyed a time of great prosperity and it may make us rethink how dark these ages really were.

So glad to watch you discovering Heilung... can't wait to see you going deeper with Maria's voice on the song "in maidjan" (live at castlefest 2017) - i bet you will pause every 10 seconds on the second part of the song!
Other songs you can react to from them are the whole setlist from the Castlefest 2017 concert (In Maidjan is the first)
They recently put on RUclips "Traust"-live in a very good quality
    AND
The whole concert they recorded at Red Rock USA is on RUclips (they released the live album from this a few days ago!)
So yes, more Heilung for us gorgeous!
Love and respect from a French follower
A final advice: i ever you have the chance to go see them live in your country, just go!!

    You absolutely MUST watch

I don't listen that much to Heilung, but I usually get goosebumps everytime.
Seeing the emotion on your face on the ending was the last straw and brought me to tear 😅
Damn' you Heilung... It's just too good ❤
Remembers me the first time seeing Eivor live last june: she brought a crowd of metalheads to tears and everybody just wanted more by the end of the show!

Thank you, Lolli, this was delightful! Enjoyed it as much as your Eivor - Trollabundin reaction video, which was my favourite so far. I love the ease with which you can pick up all these more obscure vocal techniques. I am absolutely crazy about all the throat singing, kulning, yodeling, glottal stops and wild mixture of different techniques and I am trying to learn as many as possible. You don't possibly teach any of these?

My favorite Heilung album is still LIFA. And my favorite song is Krigsgaldr. Please just listen to the live castlefest recording of the whole show in 2017. Krigsgaldr is a (Anti) war song, where Maria Franz plays some Human bones. And every time I hear it, it puts me in a light trance. Their music is really magical.

I caught the A440 flight to Lolli Land then traveled the learning curve highway on the 5th and 6th. A delicious trifle awaited, layered with psychological analysis and vocal techniques on a base of common yet powerful progressions. As I fly away I turn to see the fiery hair of Lagertha Lolli through a break in the clouds. I am calmed. Thank you for the knowledge, wisdom and fun!

Thank you for the reaction. As you have mentioned the music is very human which is a common trend within Norse music such as Heliung, Wardruna, Munknörr, Gealdýr, Danheim, Eihwar and Nytt Land. As a long time practicing norse pagan i can tell you that a lot of our traditions and customs are very human it is a case of combining the human element with the spiritual and primal side of humanity with what it means to be human. tho tbh we often have to contend with being called devil worshippers even tho it's the complete opposite. Just as you notice our music is just as deep as our belief. watching you the two videos one here and the other Eivør "Tròdlabùndin" i have learned a lot about voice and noticed things I didn't notice before, so thank you for teaching me as a Follower of the Allfather i am always excited for more knowledge no matter of it's form or origin.
another point from your voice you have a oxford accent so i am guessing your from the midlands i only mention this because I am from Bedfordshire which is east Anglia myself.
Also to answer your question about the instrument that Maria is using it is called a Lyre more specifically a viking Lyre.
I recommend Wardruna my personal favourite song is Helvegan which is gonna be my funeral song.

Fairy, you are by far the bleeping best musical reactor. I am not Patreon unfortunately, I’m sure your additional content is amazing. I’m asking for a favor and please react to “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” by the Danish Orchestra. PLEASE! Now I’m going to watch your Johnny cash Hurt reaction bc it’s so raw and authentic which makes you the best! All the best!

So this is a lovely video and your joy mixed with your passion and knowledge has made me subscribe instantly to you. So thanks for adding that to my day.
I love their song Svanrand in which they say each of the name of the Valkyries (I think) as a chant and would be fascinated to be able to hear that through your ears....(eyes?) anyway. I hope at least I might have drawn you to it (if you have not heard it before) to add some delight to you day as recompense.
