I analyze her truly amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. It doesn’t get much more iconic than this Eminem classic, and I consider this version an evolution of the composition.

I’ve watched SOOOO many reactions to this song, and yours is by far my favourite- the enjoyment and amazement you expressed was so worth seeing.
Kasey is an amazing artist, and she sounds exactly the same singing this song in a theatre as she does in a small town country pub. Can’t say there’s a song of hers that I don’t like.
She pulled apart the original song and told it with a different inflection.. Eminem’s is rapid and angry all the way through, he’s angry at the world, angry at his situation in life. Kasey’s storytelling begins as desperation, and despair, then you feel her back straighten and she faces everything with fire in her gut. Please listen to more of her music if you haven’t already, she’s so amazing.

The thing that impresses me the most about this performance is the way Kasey has moulded her interpretation of the song around the way Eminem has crafted his (brilliant) lyrics. The first 2 verses are written in the third person. They describe the fears and frustrations of a man looking from the outside. Her low key approach acts as a perfect narrative for these verses. In the third verse (things all changed) the lyrics switch to be written in the first person. This allows her to unleash the raw emotion of the 3rd verse. The fear, frustration and determination now become real because they are coming from within rather than the external narrative. A masterful performance.

She said it was a tribute to his brilliant song writing. She worked on it during the covid lockdown, with the band. She is the singer/songwriter. They professionally recorded the music, the fans went nuts, I think this was the first public airing of her version. She asked if aybody had footage, it was sent in, they put it together. Her big bro, guitar, backing vocals, producer had a bit to do with it. She sent it to eminem, he allowed her to put it on spotify. The guy on the chair on slide guitar, is her dad.

Shredding is not what she's doing tho, she's just laying into it. Shredding is a million notes per second which is what some serious banjo players can do, she's using the banjo for sonic texture and reinventing the song with it

Almost everyone I've seen react to this has said something to the effect of it highlighting how good Eminem's writing/storytelling actually is. You're the only one that actually explained that twang effect so thanks for that. What a banger this rendition is, shame so few have seen it.
Kasey Chambers family moved to Southend on Australia's southern coast so they could pursue a music career. They started to play in local pubs as the "Dead Ringer Band" and when she turned 14, Kasey joined the band as lead singer. Their debut album “Red Desert Sky”, released in 1993 had Kasey's first recorded songwriting effort.
That same year, the Dead Ringer Band won a Golden Guitar for Band of the Year. The Next year, “Australian Son” won for them an ARIA Award and a Mo Award for Best Country Music Group.
The group disbanded in 1998 when Bill and Diane, [Casey's parents], separated. 'Taking over the band under a contract with EMI Australia, Kasey recorded her solo album “The Captain” in 1998, with her brother Nash as the producer and Bill playing the guitar. To the original recording done in Australia, additional recording was done in Nashville where American musicians Judy and Buddy Miller provided vocal and instrumental support.
It's the first time I've seen/heard this performance and I was not expecting to tear up at all... but GOSH... I feel just a tad bad about saying it really makes me appreciate Eminem's lyrical genius more than his version of his own song, but I guess I never really picked up on all the lyrics before? This is slower and therefore easier to follow (ha, I sound like an old man; "I don't like any of that new-fangled rap music!" lol) so the story told in the lyrics shines through... couple that with one of the best performances ever? WOW... wow. I am in tears.
I feel the same about Falling in Reverse's reimagined version of Papa Roach - Last Resort. The slower, ponderous telling of the the lyrics makes for a more impactful feeling of the message in a song. Both Eminem and Roach versions of their songs are angst-ridden, angry and lyrically superb, however these versions make them hit so different and make you appreciate those lyrics in a totally different way.

Met her at Tamworth music festival and such a lovely person. At first I didn’t know why people were staring at me. It was because she was next to me then I realised why lol. Then we chatted and again a lovely person.
What did I just watch!?! You can't just take an Eminem song and make it better. She even went a step further and took his most popular song that introduced him to most of the world and made it her introduction to most of the world. To see this for the first time on my favorite reactors channel is even better.

Lose yourself was not just his biggest hit, it was the biggest hit in rap. That is what launched him to superstardom. Where did I say I don't like rap? You won't find that statement because it's not true so I didn't say such a thing. Ironically, your narrow view is what is keeping you from accepting that someone else my differ from your view.
She's an amazing musician who's been on the road with the family band since she was a kid (that's her dad in the hat, sitting and playing lap steel) and she wrote this arrangement in lockdown. She's a 45 year old mother of three, an Australian hall of famer and a massive Eminem fan. She's lived this, she's been given grief by record companies, she's died on stage, she feels it to her core. This is now a staple of her live shows but this was one of the first try-outs with a live audience, which is why they're so blown away. They also were able to take the audio off the sound desk feed but they had no video, so they asked fans to send in phone footage to edit together.
The “guy on the end” playing slide guitar is her dad, Bill Chambers. Kasey first went on stage as part of her dad’s country band The Dead Ringers in the 1990s, before going solo over 20 years ago. She’s one of the most highly awarded Australian artists in the country, with a substantial catalogue worth checking out.
A sound tech friend of mine once showed me a short low res vid of Kasey and Bill jamming in a studio between takes. They each had a lap steel and were doing a kind of dueling-banjos session, and absolutely tearing the paint of the walls. It was incredible!

Stepped into a Kasey Concert - Did Ya!? 😄 Yes, she's incredible. Kasey is an absolute Aussie Legend, and far more than 'Country'. She's a creative and fearless genre hopping singer/songwriter who has won just about every music award there is to win here, and no doubt deserves far more. Loved your - as ever - uber-skillful 'unpack' of what she's doing in this composition, as well as her vocal prowess. {You know... when you hollered "No Way!" your accent was very Aussie!} And I too loved the 'Mad Muppet' on the Keyboard! 🤣😂
I agree this artistic explosion out of Kasey Chambers and her band highlights the genius of Eminem’s lyrics. It’s excruciatingly plain to see that all the lyrics connected with something deep in Kasey’s psyche, that she heard him, opened her mouth, and *this* came out. I think it’s the most pain and fear-based anger I’ve heard from a singer. (And yet - hauntingly beautiful.). They all should be damned proud of themselves. I’m in awe.

What a lot of people don't know is that this was a encore performance. So the recording came from someone in the audience etc. makes it spectacular

I think Eminem’s version has plenty of emotion just a different type.
For me the difference is Kasey drags you into that emotion, even if you dont want to be & then on an entire journey from sad & hopeless to anger & determination.
Em’s to me is more of a I don’t give shit it’s my story & fu emotion & less of a journey through different emotions.

I love when an artist reinvents a song from another genre in a way that still shows how great said other writer was. It's a completely new song in every way, yet it still serves to highlight just how good a writer the original artist is. An amazing performance in every sense of the word.

I've seen many people react to this and I recall one reactor asking "Why is the audience still sitting down and not up and rocking out ?"
My answer:
1. Why would you disrupt such a masterpiece ?; and
2. It takes a while to gather your senses after the final notes in this performance to be able to show any reaction.

As an Aussie I really enjoy watching reactors discover another of our spectacular Aussie artists. Kasey has won 14 ARIA awards 10 APRA awards, was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2018 and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Her father plays guitar on some of her performances. You definitely need to dip your toe/foot/arm/self into more Aussie music and artists .... we have so much talent down here.

This was recorded at the last Australian show of Kasey’s Behind the Barricades tour, which had been postponed from 2021 due to COVID restrictions. The tour was to celebrate 20 years since the release in 2001 of her acclaimed Barricades and Brickwalls album. I believe Lose Yourself was one of her encore songs consistently on this tour (it certainly was played in Canberra) and Kasey and her people decided to record it in Newcastle. I understand the audience was told in advance it was going to be recorded. Kasey put the call out on social media for fans’ footage of the song to mix in with the footage that had been taken (most of the black and white stuff). Her dad, Bill Chambers, is on the slide guitar, and Brandon Dodd on lead guitar.
Kasey used the c-vid shutdown to create this arrangement. As I saw one person say, that is her Dad on slide guitar. At about the same time Em came out with this Kasey had trouble getting airplay so she wrote "Not Pretty Enough", about her industry struggle. She identified with Em and appreciated his work even though the genres seem world's apart ........... not really both story telling in their own style.
Rewatching this and somehow I’d missed the best Lolliism the first time:

now you know why so many requested this, this version is a banger, this performance is dynamite! Everyone that was at this performance raves about it. Kasey Chambers is a huge Eminem fan and really understood the lyrics and themes well. You correctly identified what a great musician and performer Kasey is known to be by those that have followed her career. Great analysis and reaction as always.
They recorded the audio live at the performance and it was only after the show that they realized they'd captured something special that night so Kasey put out a social media post asking anyone that was there that filmed the performance on their phones if they would share their videos. That's why the video quality is like it is, but I think it captures the feel of being there watching it live.
It really does add to the vibe. Gives it, as you say, a "being there" feel and is an improvement on the over-produced videos bands tend to put out these days.
Finally, someone mentioned the keys player!!! 1000% commitment, to the point where you kinda wonder if the cover was their idea in the first place.

You, and Chris, are the Queen & King breaking the techniques while demonstrating exactly what you’re talking about. Every video is damn captivating because you engage all of your knowledge, wit, charm, and an amazing personality, all while you’re teaching us.
Edit: Forgot to mention this performance reminds me of Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt. I’ll never hear Lose Yourself the same way after watching Kasey destroy (in the best way) this song. In my head, it’s not Em’s song anymore, it’s hers.

There are many great songs. But sometimes it takes the most magical cover of a great song, to prove just how brilliant it really is, and make it last forever.
When I first heard this.. Cant even remember how long ago, my mind was just blown.
There is a good story behind it to. She is now one of the biggest names in Australia. But in her young years, she was making music with her father. A country singer in Australia where its not that big. So she went to the US to find her own place in music. And in that period Eminem released Lose Yourself. And she connected with the song. Her struggle with music, and finding her way through. And then some 20 years later, this is recorded.
When she have made it, won awards and all that. That song have followed her, means something to her.
And even though she made it, she found her music. This song is still very important to her.

I just found your channel a few days ago and can't stop watching you. I'm really impressed with your technical knowledge of voice production and the production of our videos, but just can't get over your nerdy goodness and beauty. Especially when you put your glasses on. It's not just a looks thing, though. I think what really gets me is that you make yourself so available. I feel like your soul is reaching out and caressing and tickling and exciting and playing with me, all the while teaching me about voice. To this day I still have the album, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson - Rattlin' Bones, on regular rotation in my playlists, uninterrupted for 15 years, it's that amazing.
