- In this video, I react for the first time to Kasey Chambers performing Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”. I analyze her truly amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. It doesn’t get much more iconic than this Eminem classic, and I consider this version an evolution of the composition.

Finally someone shouts out the keyboardist living their best life back there.
Yeah, I love the keyboard player, awesome performance
Yes, thank God....totally loosing it in a great way...
I’m 70 and feel the same.
Yes me too. But the whole band gave 110%
the bloke on the slide guitar is her dad, with whom she has been touring since she was 12 years old in his dead ringers band
I’ve watched SOOOO many reactions to this song, and yours is by far my favourite- the enjoyment and amazement you expressed was so worth seeing.
Kasey is an amazing artist, and she sounds exactly the same singing this song in a theatre as she does in a small town country pub. Can’t say there’s a song of hers that I don’t like.
She pulled apart the original song and told it with a different inflection.. Eminem’s is rapid and angry all the way through, he’s angry at the world, angry at his situation in life. Kasey’s storytelling begins as desperation, and despair, then you feel her back straighten and she faces everything with fire in her gut. Please listen to more of her music if you haven’t already, she’s so amazing.
I'm 71 years old and THIS is the greatest live performance I have ever seen
Same here
Agreed
And one of the most unpredictable, in the best way.
I'm 67 and it's the same here and I've seen quite a few tremendous performances in my time.
You know there is Dire Straits Alchemy and AC/DC at River Plate - right. This is corner bar live karaoke night stuff.
"Strumming that Banjo like it ows her money" I've watched way too many reaction videos to this song and this is by far my favorite!
That is, by far, the best line I've heard in a long time. Thank you, Lolli. That was f'in amazing. 😅❤
I love the fact that her dad Bill Chambers is playing slide guitar.
@stanroach2842 It's Brandon Dodd, no?
@@davidhines68yep. Brandon Dodd.
The guy playing slide guitar on his lap is definitely her father Bill Chambers
@@cyclone2515 definitely bill chambers
The guy that is “the embodiment of sitting on your porch” is Kasey’s Dad, Bill, with his awesome slide skills! ❤
Im glad someone has acknowledged Bill. He is a consumate muscian.
"she's strumming that banjo like it owes her money " that's got to be the quote of the week .just love your sense of humour
The thing that impresses me the most about this performance is the way Kasey has moulded her interpretation of the song around the way Eminem has crafted his (brilliant) lyrics. The first 2 verses are written in the third person. They describe the fears and frustrations of a man looking from the outside. Her low key approach acts as a perfect narrative for these verses. In the third verse (things all changed) the lyrics switch to be written in the first person. This allows her to unleash the raw emotion of the 3rd verse. The fear, frustration and determination now become real because they are coming from within rather than the external narrative. A masterful performance.
You're the first person I've seen point this out, and you nailed it! Great observation.
Thank you for the observation, it makes the story complete. You know her raw emotion is going to be unleashed when she reaches for the plectrum that poor banjo is going to feel the full raw rath of her emotion that she unleashes
She said it was a tribute to his brilliant song writing. She worked on it during the covid lockdown, with the band. She is the singer/songwriter. They professionally recorded the music, the fans went nuts, I think this was the first public airing of her version. She asked if aybody had footage, it was sent in, they put it together. Her big bro, guitar, backing vocals, producer had a bit to do with it. She sent it to eminem, he allowed her to put it on spotify. The guy on the chair on slide guitar, is her dad.
Not her brother on guitar and backing vocals.
Also, not Eminem allowed to put it on Spotify, cause he no longer holds rights to the original song.
Tim Minchin gives us all the proof we need that piano is cool.
Its the only time I've ever seen anyone shred a banjo and I'm so glad it was this woman!
Totally!
Watch some John Butler for some awesome banjo playing.
Shredding is not what she's doing tho, she's just laying into it. Shredding is a million notes per second which is what some serious banjo players can do, she's using the banjo for sonic texture and reinventing the song with it
@@richardkenna149 She is basically using the banjo as a prop. She has joked that she doesn't even know how to play it.
clearly homie never palyed banjo and kazooie
Sitting there the whole time thinking "wait for it, wait for it!"
Almost everyone I've seen react to this has said something to the effect of it highlighting how good Eminem's writing/storytelling actually is. You're the only one that actually explained that twang effect so thanks for that. What a banger this rendition is, shame so few have seen it.
Kasey Chambers family moved to Southend on Australia's southern coast so they could pursue a music career. They started to play in local pubs as the "Dead Ringer Band" and when she turned 14, Kasey joined the band as lead singer. Their debut album “Red Desert Sky”, released in 1993 had Kasey's first recorded songwriting effort.
That same year, the Dead Ringer Band won a Golden Guitar for Band of the Year. The Next year, “Australian Son” won for them an ARIA Award and a Mo Award for Best Country Music Group.
The group disbanded in 1998 when Bill and Diane, [Casey's parents], separated. 'Taking over the band under a contract with EMI Australia, Kasey recorded her solo album “The Captain” in 1998, with her brother Nash as the producer and Bill playing the guitar. To the original recording done in Australia, additional recording was done in Nashville where American musicians Judy and Buddy Miller provided vocal and instrumental support.
It's the first time I've seen/heard this performance and I was not expecting to tear up at all... but GOSH... I feel just a tad bad about saying it really makes me appreciate Eminem's lyrical genius more than his version of his own song, but I guess I never really picked up on all the lyrics before? This is slower and therefore easier to follow (ha, I sound like an old man; "I don't like any of that new-fangled rap music!" lol) so the story told in the lyrics shines through... couple that with one of the best performances ever? WOW... wow. I am in tears.
I feel the same about Falling in Reverse's reimagined version of Papa Roach - Last Resort. The slower, ponderous telling of the the lyrics makes for a more impactful feeling of the message in a song. Both Eminem and Roach versions of their songs are angst-ridden, angry and lyrically superb, however these versions make them hit so different and make you appreciate those lyrics in a totally different way.
Your ability to dissect and mimic is astounding. Love your channel
Met her at Tamworth music festival and such a lovely person. At first I didn’t know why people were staring at me. It was because she was next to me then I realised why lol. Then we chatted and again a lovely person.
What did I just watch!?! You can't just take an Eminem song and make it better. She even went a step further and took his most popular song that introduced him to most of the world and made it her introduction to most of the world. To see this for the first time on my favorite reactors channel is even better.
Do you even know what you're talking about. Lose Yourself was not what introduced Eminem to the world. And she did not make this song better
@@johnfive2440 Why, yes I do. Lose Yourself is what launched him to superstar status due to the movie reaching beyond just the rapper/hiphop audience. She made this song better IMO. Evidently in your opinion she did not. Let me guess, you are a fan of rap.
@SheriffChuck81-qq5vq yet again, you have no idea what you're talking about. Go back and look at his first two albums. Those are what launched him, and it was before the movie... clearly, you said you don't like rap. Don't act like you know anything about it then. I like rap, I also like all genres of music. My favorite artists are The Beatles. I understand them all, you apparently have a narrow view of the world
@@SheriffChuck81-qq5vq seems like you might a fan of rap if you thought this song was good. Those are his words, his life
@@johnfive2440 You are getting hostile over your own misunderstanding of what I actually wrote. His first two albums are not what brought him to worldwide fame. Lose yourself was not just his biggest hit, it was the biggest hit in rap. That is what launched him to superstardom. Where did I say I don't like rap? You won't find that statement because it's not true so I didn't say such a thing. Ironically, your narrow view is what is keeping you from accepting that someone else my differ from your view.
She's an amazing musician who's been on the road with the family band since she was a kid (that's her dad in the hat, sitting and playing lap steel) and she wrote this arrangement in lockdown. She's a 45 year old mother of three, an Australian hall of famer and a massive Eminem fan. She's lived this, she's been given grief by record companies, she's died on stage, she feels it to her core. This is now a staple of her live shows but this was one of the first try-outs with a live audience, which is why they're so blown away. They also were able to take the audio off the sound desk feed but they had no video, so they asked fans to send in phone footage to edit together.
The “guy on the end” playing slide guitar is her dad, Bill Chambers. Kasey first went on stage as part of her dad’s country band The Dead Ringers in the 1990s, before going solo over 20 years ago. She’s one of the most highly awarded Australian artists in the country, with a substantial catalogue worth checking out.
A sound tech friend of mine once showed me a short low res vid of Kasey and Bill jamming in a studio between takes. They each had a lap steel and were doing a kind of dueling-banjos session, and absolutely tearing the paint of the walls. It was incredible!
Also, isn't the dude in the yellow light her brother?
@@SheldoFett No it’s her long time band member Brandon Dodd. He is very talented as well✌🏼
My gods! Her breath control!!!
It's a literal case of 'shes got a great set of lungs'
Stepped into a Kasey Concert - Did Ya!? 😄 Yes, she's incredible. Kasey is an absolute Aussie Legend, and far more than 'Country'. She's a creative and fearless genre hopping singer/songwriter who has won just about every music award there is to win here, and no doubt deserves far more. Loved your - as ever - uber-skillful 'unpack' of what she's doing in this composition, as well as her vocal prowess. {You know... when you hollered "No Way!" your accent was very Aussie!} And I too loved the 'Mad Muppet' on the Keyboard! 🤣😂
I agree this artistic explosion out of Kasey Chambers and her band highlights the genius of Eminem’s lyrics. It’s excruciatingly plain to see that all the lyrics connected with something deep in Kasey’s psyche, that she heard him, opened her mouth, and *this* came out. I think it’s the most pain and fear-based anger I’ve heard from a singer. (And yet - hauntingly beautiful.). They all should be damned proud of themselves. I’m in awe.
Warrior mother personified
Kasey Chambers is an amazing singer songwriter country singer and story teller. I love that this has gone viral because I have been a fan of this incredible artist for years. What a lot of people don't know is that this was a encore performance. So the recording came from someone in the audience etc. makes it spectacular
Compelled to comment. Hear me out! I hate all reaction videos,i get offended when YT recommends them on my feed. Ive watched nearly all of these as i dont think ive seen a better live performance. Yours is the best by a long way, love the editing and your knowledge of how and why. I cant watch this performance enough, still gives me goosebumps and teary eyed. Thanks,
This brings me to tears, especially with watching someone seeing it for the first time. It’s fucking incredible
This is one of the best reviews of Kasey Chambers version of Lose Yourself. Thank you.❤
I have watched dozens of reactions to this performance. Yours was the best. Incisive and knowledgeable. Thanks!
I was on the verge of tears hearing this. This performance hit me so hard.
This was nuts! It starts off as this cool, folksy version of a rap song....and then all hell breaks loose!
"You better lose yourself in the music, the moment. You own it, you better never let it go." Indeed!
and the mood all changed.
Eminem brought the lyrics, Kasey brought the emotion. Thank you for the reaction, loved it. Best "cover" ever.
I totally agree
I think Eminem’s version has plenty of emotion just a different type.
For me the difference is Kasey drags you into that emotion, even if you dont want to be & then on an entire journey from sad & hopeless to anger & determination.
Em’s to me is more of a I don’t give shit it’s my story & fu emotion & less of a journey through different emotions.
@@Amanda-uc5jq I agree
I love when an artist reinvents a song from another genre in a way that still shows how great said other writer was. It's a completely new song in every way, yet it still serves to highlight just how good a writer the original artist is. An amazing performance in every sense of the word.
I need memes of Lolli’s facial expression when the full band kicked and when Kasey said she was going to tear the roof off! 😂
I've seen many people react to this and I recall one reactor asking "Why is the audience still sitting down and not up and rocking out ?"
My answer:
1. Why would you disrupt such a masterpiece ?; and
2. It takes a while to gather your senses after the final notes in this performance to be able to show any reaction.
Pure feminine, mama bear RAGE. More potent than anything else... I love Kaseys performance for this. I was waiting for your review specifically to capture the nuances. Didn't disappoint. Love from Australia.
The slide guitar in the outro break is immense. Lifts it to a whole new place (again). Well done Dad, well done.
That whole band rocks it out
I have been dying to see Lolli's reaction to Kasey ever since she agreed to do it. I have been a Kasey fan for decades but this performance is epic. I think Lolli will love it.
They KNEW they did something amazing that night. Read up on the history of how this was made.
Probably the best musical video of 2023. I had never heard of her (them) before this song (my niece's reaction channel turned me on to her).. now I have listened to almost everything she (they) have produced.
She has lived and breathed the lyrics, and it just poored out of her,Brilliant!👏👏👏
Thanks for picking out the piano player as his energy is electrifying. 😂 also I love your channel and all the wonderful personality you put in it.
I wish I could like this 100 times!
Your ability to demonstrate the techniques you're talking about blows my mind, and with one of my favourite performances as the subject - nirvana. All the thumbs up!
That's Kasey's dad on lap steel guitar. I would recommend trying one of her original songs. Try Ain't no little girl (bluegrass underground version)
Gorgeous reaction. Thanks! I just subscribed to your channel Miss Fairypants.
I must have watched this video twenny-gazillion times but it still makes me cry every time.
Tons of other people will tell you about these facts, but I'm gunna tell you anyway:
The bloke on the slide guitar is her father. The band is all family.
Eminem saw this & immediately phoned her to tell her how much he loved it & told her to put it on her Spotify.
Kasey has been a huge fan of Eminem since the year dot which is why she interpretted his lyrical masterpiece so well. Yeah brilliant. Love.
xx
Linda / LindyLu from Oz.
That performance is actually NUTS
As an Aussie I really enjoy watching reactors discover another of our spectacular Aussie artists. Kasey has won 14 ARIA awards 10 APRA awards, was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2018 and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Her father plays guitar on some of her performances. You definitely need to dip your toe/foot/arm/self into more Aussie music and artists .... we have so much talent down here.
Farnsy & Barnsy just to name a couple 👍
It's about time Kacey gets the credit she deserves
Let us not forget Vanessa Amarosi as a great example of Australian musical talent
I’d add Tina Arena to that list.. her vocal range is amazing
Hearing our Fairy Voice Mother harmonize with herself rocked my world! Is it just me?
Loved your reaction!
This was recorded at the last Australian show of Kasey’s Behind the Barricades tour, which had been postponed from 2021 due to COVID restrictions. The tour was to celebrate 20 years since the release in 2001 of her acclaimed Barricades and Brickwalls album. I believe Lose Yourself was one of her encore songs consistently on this tour (it certainly was played in Canberra) and Kasey and her people decided to record it in Newcastle. I understand the audience was told in advance it was going to be recorded. Kasey put the call out on social media for fans’ footage of the song to mix in with the footage that had been taken (most of the black and white stuff). Her dad, Bill Chambers, is on the slide guitar, and Brandon Dodd on lead guitar.
Kasey used the c-vid shutdown to create this arrangement. As I saw one person say, that is her Dad on slide guitar. At about the same time Em came out with this Kasey had trouble getting airplay so she wrote "Not Pretty Enough", about her industry struggle. She identified with Em and appreciated his work even though the genres seem world's apart ........... not really both story telling in their own style.
Rewatching this and somehow I’d missed the best Lolliism the first time:
‘“I was playing in the beginning
the mood all changed”
(pause)
Didn’t it fucking just.’
I scared my dog with my quite loud ‘HAAAA!’
Such perfect timing.
now you know why so many requested this, this version is a banger, this performance is dynamite! Everyone that was at this performance raves about it. Kasey Chambers is a huge Eminem fan and really understood the lyrics and themes well. You correctly identified what a great musician and performer Kasey is known to be by those that have followed her career. Great analysis and reaction as always.
They recorded the audio live at the performance and it was only after the show that they realized they'd captured something special that night so Kasey put out a social media post asking anyone that was there that filmed the performance on their phones if they would share their videos. That's why the video quality is like it is, but I think it captures the feel of being there watching it live.
It really does add to the vibe. Gives it, as you say, a "being there" feel and is an improvement on the over-produced videos bands tend to put out these days.
Finally, someone mentioned the keys player!!! 1000% commitment, to the point where you kinda wonder if the cover was their idea in the first place.
best performance of hers i've seen, Rattlin Bones is another fave song of hers for me
Her performance of Ain't no little girl is another must listen by her.
You, and Chris, are the Queen & King breaking the techniques while demonstrating exactly what you’re talking about. Every video is damn captivating because you engage all of your knowledge, wit, charm, and an amazing personality, all while you’re teaching us.
Edit: Forgot to mention this performance reminds me of Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt. I’ll never hear Lose Yourself the same way after watching Kasey destroy (in the best way) this song. In my head, it’s not Em’s song anymore, it’s hers.
When the song drops in the band comes in… Instant chills 🤪
the Best Thing that the mankind has broght to this World, is MUSIC !!!
A transformation that’s up there with Johnny Cash making Hurt his own and John Farnham’s evolution of The Beatles -Help!!
In my opinion 3 of the best “covers” of all time.
I say “covers” because I believe they are so much more than that.
Pardon my acronym but JFC that was incredible!!! What a mind blowing performance. I sat stunned for a moment with tears on my face. Can’t wait to explore her music. You are a gem as usual!!
You know you made a immortal song that will echo through history.
When covers like this is build on it.
Deconstruction music this way for me shows what songs will stand the test of time.
There are many great songs. But sometimes it takes the most magical cover of a great song, to prove just how brilliant it really is, and make it last forever.
When I first heard this.. Cant even remember how long ago, my mind was just blown.
There is a good story behind it to. She is now one of the biggest names in Australia. But in her young years, she was making music with her father. A country singer in Australia where its not that big. So she went to the US to find her own place in music. And in that period Eminem released Lose Yourself. And she connected with the song. Her struggle with music, and finding her way through. And then some 20 years later, this is recorded.
When she have made it, won awards and all that. That song have followed her, means something to her.
And even though she made it, she found her music. This song is still very important to her.
Mr Mathers approved this for Spotify - that's an official endorsement on his part! 👍😎
Excellent point. That's a classy move, to enable one's ego to relax over a child in a Song...
Masterclass rating on the Vocals expert to enhance the minutiae to details coverage...
Moreso, he only very rarely does that.
She also lived the lyrics in her own way. So the emotion is there, which makes it an incredible experience.
Kasey singing Ain't No Little Girl, also shows the passion she shares in her performances. She sure leaves nothing on the stage when she sings.
Hi Lolli,
Thanks for introducing me to Kasey. This is an amazing performance and I'm going to take a dive into her music. I'm really writing this to express my admiration for you, though. I just found your channel a few days ago and can't stop watching you. I'm really impressed with your technical knowledge of voice production and the production of our videos, but just can't get over your nerdy goodness and beauty. Especially when you put your glasses on. It's not just a looks thing, though. I think what really gets me is that you make yourself so available. I feel like your soul is reaching out and caressing and tickling and exciting and playing with me, all the while teaching me about voice. I can't help but to love you and thank you for sharing yourself with me. You inspire a real connection with your audience and want you to know that I see you and thank God for you.
This version devastates me every time. In the most beautiful way possible.
This is better than the original sorta in the way of Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
I’d finally managed to get to where I could not get all choked up while watching reactions to this incredible performance and then you come along with this, Lolli! Your joy (and Kasey’s execution of the song) has me dang near blubbering. And I love it. I’m a 56-year old man and Kasey does something to my entire being when I watch this. I am so happy you enjoyed it so much. You’re the best!
Cheers,
Dignan
Damn what a performance!
Now this is a live concert you dream of been to!
Wonderful analysis of this song. Kasey Chambers’ version pays such great tribute to Eminem’s lyrics.❤
This rendition is so damn good. The emotion conveyed, my god.
The brilliance of Em's lyrics unleashed with a new level of emotional interpretation. The best cover of any song I've experienced. Your breakdown was also top tier. Well done.
When a cover is it's own original ❤
I think she’s singing it from the perspective of the daughter, as an adult, finally understanding her father’s struggles and shortcomings and resilience 😮 her dad was a musician too…it’s just brilliant and beautiful and heartbreaking
Just earlier today I sent this to my GF with the caption "I can shoot you a link if you are ready to cry happy/triumphant/angry/life is hard tears, its an emotional journey" and "Her performance really highlights how amazing Em's writing is too" Shame the premier is 4am Perth time, I doubt I'll be up. Keen to check out your reaction over my morning coffee though.
Yeah, same location and same early morning start, at least it gets the heart pumping while trying not to spill the coffee.
same same same.@@billeaton9562

Amazing performance. I haven't been able to stop watching it (and reactions to it) since I first saw it a couple months ago 👍
I can't believe there were no tears!
I get a little watery eyed e everytime I hear this masterpiece!

She sang it with feeling coz she lived the travelling music life from an early age and understands the struggle
Superb. Both of you.
Nice to see Kasey still creating great music. She was well known in the early 2000's in the Australian music scene, amazing talent.
I've been waiting sooo long for you to react to this song ❤ loved your facial reactions changing during this one ❤ glad you love our Kasey 🇦🇺 was great to see you dumb founded for a change 😂
Blown away by this. It's genius and rich and unique and I just love it. Really shocked at how well this was transcribed from the original to this work of art!
The technical blended with just the right amount of heartwarming shenanigans. ❤ one of the harder reactions done masterfully
She is a rock goddess, and the banjo should pay up
I am *SO* excited about this one, OMG. ❤❤❤
Oh, Lolli,Lolli. As if we couldn't love you enough. What a superb critique. And you. Dumbfounded. This is what RUclips is for. Thank you again. And a big up to all the band as well.
I am aussie Kasey is the Queen of Aussie country. The old fella sitting down with the hat playing the guitar with the slide bottle neck is her father Bill Chambers. A legend of Aussie country music in his own right. Check his stuff out too. Cheers, hooroo
Love your reaction, I’ve been blessed to see Kasey preforming this live, before this video at the Byron Bay Blues Festival 2022, it was next level 🤯🎶

This song mirrors her career. Nobody would play her songs until she wrote Am I Not Pretty Enough as a big fuck you to the radio stations. It became her breakout hit, played on every reladio ststion in the country! (Do yourself a favour & watch that) She is a big Eminem fan, so it resonates with her
Wow! Did not knew this one. Amazing! What a transformation! And what a banger! Great rocky piece with massive 60s and 70s vibes. Super cool! Thank you😊 This made my very late starting weekend🙃
1:07 in......and i was hooked ......😂......again! Then i watched the performance of the music. I love it when folks cover tunes where the meaning of the words might be confusing to some in the original, bringing them even more clarity in the cover. This cover is truly amazing and extremely haunting.
