- In this video, I react for the first time to A MOVIE! “The Pick Of Destiny” by Jack Black’s Tenacious D. I analyse the incredibly… exhilarating musical performances, explain and demonstrate the featured vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. I love a good blend of rock, singing and comedy! This was a jolly good time indeed.

Not recognizing Meatloaf might just be the part of this reaction I was most amused by. "Actually a suppressed rockstar" was really endearing. Love you Lolli!
I Vote for Paradise by the dashboard light for her next reaction ;) ruclips.net/video/C11MzbEcHlw/видео.html
So many miss that meatloaf is jack's muse and inspiration for so much of what he does! :)
Came in the comments, but in a different way. Meatloaf was a crucial part of shaping rock in the 70's and 80's. I mean rock anthems that are still played at weddings to this day. "Let me sleep on it, I'll give you an answer in the morning." That's Meatloaf! If that doesn't ring a bell, he played a heavy chested man in fight club. You should check him out @The Fairy Voice Mother. This was so much fun to watch... Oh, btw. You brought it up so I think you might enjoy it. Tenacious D did a cover of hit me baby 1 more time. A really short cover, but if you enjoy it, maybe you could make it longer by reacting to a bunch of their covers... Pinball wizard and wicked games
Yes, but she's the only person thus far to recognize the Nirvana riff at the end of the opening number.
True true
Can we all agree that Meat Loaf was freaking awesome?
One of the best rock baritenors in history.
Yep. RIP.
I love that it seems like he's just spent the last couple decades occasionally showing up to do whatever he thinks would be fun or funny. This, Fight Club, he did an episode of South Park at one point. Just seems like a fun guy enjoying life.
Even though I lived a similar experience like young JB; with an over-bearing religious father, every time I see his part in the song come up I am just brimming with excitement. like "Yay! Meatloaf!"
said no to the covid vaccine, dead!
Kickapoo is possibly the greatest opening scene from any comedy movie! RIP RJD.
RIP Meatloaf as well
Kickapoo and the South Park movie opener “quiet mountain town”… both tied for greatest for me
Not only was that actually Dio in the opening song, but his father was played by Meatloaf. Not just a suppressed rock star, but another actual rock legend. There's a video of Dio singing his part and Jack being in awe of him. Then Dio actually asked if there was more for him to do, because he really liked the project. Side note: Kickapoo is a real town. IDK if there's one in Missouri or not, but there is one up in Wisconsin for sure, as well as a Kickapoo river.
And there is video of Dio singing this whole bit in 1 take :D
I don't remember where I heard/read this, but Dio supposedly brought his own mic, and the studio crew said not to worry about that because they had everything ready for them. He began to do his part and blew out their mic. He apologized and explained that this is why he brings his own gear, and they had to redo the part with Dio's mic.
I heard the same. Can't confirm if its true, but I'd believe it. XD
There is a video on RUclips about it 😊
God bless Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio❤🤟🥹
The 4 droogies were a cameo from the film Clockwork Orange and in that film mostly cockney accents.
>Nadsat is English with some borrowed words from Russian. It also contains influences from Cockney rhyming slang, the King James Bible, German, some words of unclear origin and some that Burgess invented.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadsat
If it were a Cameo then the actual actors from the movie would've done it. This is "just" a reference!
2:58 "There seems to be some continuity between him and his dad's voice, so it's kinda like... dad, I got this from you." Incredibly flattering towards actual Jack Black since the dad in this scene is straight up Meatloaf.
Also, the part where they don't remember the song they played at the end of the movie is what leads to "Tribute" which was part of their self titled album in 2001.
The winner of the Finnish version of The Voice as few years back auditioned with Master Exploder from this movie.
The British gang that find him on the bench is a reference to A Clockwork Orange.
Yeah it's a clear reference XD I guess she haven't seen it...
36:30 Dave Grohl plays Satan
And of course the one legged dude is Tim Robbins, you know, Andy from Shawshank Redemption.
it took me a couple years after this came out before I realized that was Tim Robbins myself. Easy to miss, but hilarious he was in the movie.
Regarding the 'demonization of cockneys' 😉
The masked goons are a Clockwork Orange reference, who in that movie speak a strange blend of English/Russian slang called Nadsat - with the obligatory Cockney accents 🤣🤣🤣
hey, she had probably gone a full day without being offended, let her have it.
She's wrong in this instance but not wrong in the overall point. It is overused and cringe. It is meant to portray ill intentions
BTW, those side beard things are called "Sideburns" in honor of Union Army General Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 - September 13, 1881) His spectacular growth of whiskers became known as "sideburns", deriving from the two parts of his surname.
Those specifically were sideburns known as Mutton Chops
There's a funny story regarding Dio's part in the Movie. Dio brought his own microphone but Jack Black told him not to use it because they already had some. Dio warned them and fried their microphone on the first take. They then used his microphone.
This ☝️🤘
It blows my mind that the kid who played baby Jables Black is Barry from The Goldbergs
Big Tasty!
Omg, I had not a clue! 😂
One song you should check out after now having watched this and tribute is
"The ballad of Hollywood jack and the rage cage"
It's basically a song of everything that happened after this. Jack's fame in Hollywood, how they drifted and Kyle went down hill while jack kept rising, and how they reunited and Jack brought Kyle back up.
Rize of the Fenix is such an underrated album, there's some absolute certified bangers
SCHOOL OF ROCK is a must JACK BLACK MOVIE! 🤞✌
Thanks for doing this fairy, honestly not enough reactions to this masterpiece of a movie. Keep up the good work!
Okay, I LOVE THIS. Please do more reactions to musical films. You’re the best, Lollipop!!
Highly recommend a documentary done by Dave Grohl called Sound City. It's about the studio of the same name in Van Nuys, LA. When the studio closed Grohl bought the sound board, and had it moved up to his home studio in Seattle. He decided to do a look back at all the legendary albums recorded at Sound City (including Nevermind by Nirvana) while at the same time asking the artist to his home to record new songs on that old sound board.
Yay!!! So happy you are checking this out. I can't believe more music reactors have not done this.
You absolutely HAVE to review Spinal Tap!!!!
Masterpiece
I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach and this is sort of inbetween, it's like a Mach piece really.
@@genjimm :-D Just brilliant!!
They both are actually singing and playing guitar. Jack black is good but Kyle Gass is a really great player👌🏼🔥
The Cockney guys at the start is a reference to the movie A Clockwork Orange.
As for Dave, he can play any instrument and sing. The first Foo Fighters album was made by him and him alone, he wrote and played all instruments and did the vocals.
And so did he do for this movie play the instruments you see him play and sing the vocals you see him sing.
Tenacious D opened for Foo Fighters at festivals for a while and Dave has played the drums at some of Tenacious D shows.
The most wholesome rockers in the world (Kyle, JB and Dave) are also the most wholesome friends in rock.
thank you...
If you don’t know about it Dave Grohl did a record called Probot which was him doing most of the instrumentation and his favourite vocalists singing. Lemmy, Lee Dorian etc.
So fun fact: I have a replica Pick Of Destiny. It has only ever been used when my band covered Master Exploder from this movie
The Reaction of Destiny! I was waiting something like this for years!
The cockney gang is a reference to the movie "A Clockwork Orange". The music cue when they showed up is also from the movie
This was a fun review, thanks for doing this!
LOVED this vid great stuff!
Ben has a Dio wig on its unmistakable 😂 It was amazing going to the movies with Lolli ...😊❤❤
For the expression you made when you recognized Dio, you made my day. Why not make another video on another of his performances? Love your channel. 😍🤘🏻
Awesome Lolli. The fact you committed to the whole movie and did a reaction, i might have fallen in love!! No matter how many times i listen to the D it still cracks me up. You just have to get through their albums now.
I love listening to your reactions. Amazing
I am VERY excited about this.
Michael Angelo Batio plays ambidextrous doubleneck guitars like that, for lack of a better description. he even has one with 4 necks in an x shape, the strap button is mounted to a bearing or something and he'll spin the whole thing 180 degrees and switch to the other 2 necks. they're not a common thing, but they are a real thing
I bought my Jeep WJ from his cousin back in '08, which is the only time I've heard of him... he showed me videos of him playing some crazy guitars.
He did have the same last name, so might have been his cousin.
I thought of that as soon as I saw that guitar.
TheDooo plays one as well in some of the videos on his channel.
Also Stevie vai
Lolli!!!! i love the hair you look amazing!!! and Jack Black is brilliant!
I can essentially recite this movie. Its amazing
Comment not related to this video - although I did watch it and enjoyed it. ( but also because I've seen POD several times and always find it stupidly hilarious . . :) ) But anyway - I just happened upon an interview that you did a few years ago on another channel called Video Husky.
I've been a subscriber to this channel for a couple of years now and after watching that interview . . . I like you even more now. :) You're last two video's - The Johnny Cash cover and the most recent one "I can't decide"
Like others mention, the mockumentary "Spinal Tap" would be an obvious choice to react to
It will also come with a few "Oh, did that rock term come from here" -moments - especially if you have ever played Guitar Hero :)
This made my night so much better. I enjoyed watching her watch this movie😂
9:24 'the demonization of cockneys' It's from 'A Clockwork Orange', Burgess' famous 1962 novel adapted into a mega-famous Kubrick 1971 film adaptation. Nominated for 4 Oscars and 7 British Academy Awards. Crazy. Grotesque. Try it?
But they didn't speak cockney, they spoke Nadsat
I am so glad you did this.
I've enjoyed a millon reactions on this channel and thought this day will never come. but it finally did. I wish there was another Tenacious D movie like this one, but we can't be greedy, there's already a "best song in the world" already. Thanks for giving us such a great reaction and enoying the movie as we all did ♥
That was great lolli. Loved it!
loved your reaction
4:36 you just watched pure epicness at it´s best with MeatLoaf, Ronnie james Dio and Jack black in about one piece of musical art....
I absolutely love this movie. I never knew about Tenacious D until the movie, I just thought it was just another Jack Black movie. I can't wait to see your reactions to the movie!
Saw Anna's reaction to "I Can't Decide" yesterday. Enjoyed her review, but really enjoyed your singing and the cinematography.
Love this movie! And your reactions were hilarious 😂
I love this movie, me and my friends would always sing these songs for months after watching it
Thanks, fun movie. The ' Tenacious D - Baby One More Time ' video. These guys are just awesome.
I like the guests who played small parts. They were awesome. But I liked Tim Robbins part too. But I didn't see anyone comment that he was in the movie too. The Stranger, with no leg. In the trench coat. Ya, him. That was Tim Robbins. This movie is always good for a laugh. I'm glad that you saw it also. Thanks for sharing this with us.
15:28 Takes me back to a jam session I had with this psychedelic band that told me to sound more like water. I play drums.
I love this btw! One of my favorite musicals and my favorite vocal instructor/vocalist/Fairy Voice Mother.
"It's very nirvana this guitar part" she says as the guy on drums is FROM nirvana lol
I would love to see you analyze Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp, so many good songs and good performances in that movie. A lot of actors you didn't know could sing really can sing.
I've probably seen this more times than any other movie. Absolute classic.
Fun fact - young JB grew up to be Big Tasty on The Goldbergs!
What ???
Please listen to Automatic Sun, released the 4th, 4th song on their upcoming album, Keep Me Fed. Live video w studio audio. You will enjoy.
Also when they went upstairs to get the pick, that was the “stairway to heaven”!
** guitarway to heaven, actually. :)
Underrated movie probably made a 100 bucks but I dug it!!
Him praying to an artist called "Dio" is sort of cute, but as a metal fan, it is absolutely perfect.
Oh my god, I'm in love!!
I love this video so much
More movie reactions please!!!
This is one of my all time favorite movies!
Hi Lolli! Please, you've got to check out Viviane Donner belting out 'The Great Gig in the Sky.' It’s absolutely mind-blowing! She’s a Brazilian gem with a voice to die for!
That was great!! More movie reactions, please… Spinal Tap? Rocky Horror? Yew Rawk!!
School of Rock? Rock Star (or was it called Steel Dragon?)
Rocky horror 100%
Blues Brothers would be a cool one to watch you react to
There are so many movies with great music, like Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Bo Burnham's Inside (pretty much everything he makes), Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, This is Spinal Tap, I know there's more I just can't think of more right now (reply if you can think of others).
Thanks for all the great reaction videos!
This was awesome
I always loved Phantom of the Paradise because Jessica Harper does a tremendous job performing the most 70's song to ever 70's. I'd recommend reacting to it, it's very fun.
Phantom of the Paradise is a classic. Awesome soundtrack, I have it on vinyl.
Legendary expansion on the channel!! 🎉🎤🎙🎧🎬
I loved your reaction to seeing Dio 😅
RIP the Loaf of Meat
Loli might need to React to some of his work... or Rocky Horror...
"rightly so" XD Yasssss
this was chaos. omw. Pause, dont mute
when i watched this movie i watched it so many times. yet also i did not know who meat loaf was. but even back then i knew a song from him. "i´d do anything for love - meat loaf" that song is still so good. definetly a reaction worth :)
Look, maybe I’m just drunk, but I’m smitten. You energy, your smile. I can’t help smiling too.
i do remember , and now im subbing because you are cool for that
Great reaction, Jack Black is incredible!
Side note... You really need to check out Stargazer by Dio, as you mentioned that you've only heard Holy Diver so far.
This was so fun to see you react to! I'd love to see more movie reactions. How about Rocketman?
I saw a bit of Kirsten Dunst in her face and now I can't unsee it
Love the movie. Love the D (Tenacious) Love the open mic host played by Paul F. Tompkins - a hilarious comedian, improvisor, and podcaster! Most of all, love hanging out with my FVM 💜💜
Awh yay 🥰💜
Best reaction for rock forever!Hard rock hallelujah! Žádný máčky!👽👽👽
An awesome watch is Play by Dave Grohl which is a 23 minute song where he plays every instrument. So he records the full playthrough on one instrument then does another 23 minute play through on a different instrument etc. Its 7 instruments including Piano, which he admits he doesn't (normally) play. He doesn't read music so he had to memorise all 23 minutes for each of the 7 instruments.
You need to listen to some Meatloaf!
Bat out of Hell
Paradise by the Dashboard Light
Dead Ringer for love (with classic 'rock' Cher)
For Crying out Loud (my personal favourite)
_Edit:_ listen to the album version of *For Crying out Loud* , i've never found a decent live version
Original Sin
Edit: Add Wasted Youth/Everything Louder Than Everything Else
I'm guessing I'm one of few my age that know these two, but I love "My Fair Lady" and it would be awesome to see you react to it, analyze it. Also "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" is another pretty awesome musical. I can't believe I almost forgot my absolute favorite (Though I do prefer the original London cast) The Phantom Of The Opera. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are incredible. The movie was pretty good, but I just remember being a kid and my dad playing The Phantom while we cleaned the house and it would be so loud the bass would make the house shake hahaha it was AWESOME!!!
RIP MEATLOAF... an excellent choice for an actor, playing his father..
A story I had heard about the Dio part he brought his own mic cause he didn't think the mic they had would work. They had him use the one they had and he blew it out and they switched to the one he used
Jack Blacks love for music is even more obvious in school of rock. Give it a go!
20:56 I'm pretty sure the split double guitar and tapping style displayed by Kyle Gas there is a direct reference to a guitarist called Michael Angelo Batio who was famous for such a playing style, treating both fretboards as if they were keyboards.
You had the best reaction to Dio out of anyone who's reacted to this song. That right there puts you so much above the rest
Hurray !!
JEFF was HERE 🏆
Beelzeboss is my favorite karaoke song to perform and, in conjunction with a certain Stephen Lynch song, is the song that won me my first ever karaoke contest. :D
School of rock was simply amazing by Jack. Very cute too
There's two movies I love that changed my life perseption of things in Many ways, Repo:The Genetic Opera, and Immortal Beloved, the second one is not that much of a musical as repo, but is the life and legacy of the Maestro Beethoven.
Musical suggestion: romance and cigarettes. Band movie suggestions: the commitments, Eddie & The cruisers.
This was a fun reaction, enjoyed thoroughly
Vocal coaches reacting to more than just music is cool.
Dio's part with the lyric "Where the city of fallen angels" and that note is a major ASMR trigger for me.
Would love a reaction to Pitch Perfect. Some awesome acapella, female friendships, genuinely funny, I watch it whenever it's on. ❤
