They are great live! If you do another, I would suggest "In Maidjan". Their live performances are more rituals than songs and are amazing! Maria Franz has a beautiful voice
6:03 you felt it here, you felt nature. You felt the appreciation from our ancestors from europe, that once held nature in high regard. Like the native americans are known for.
I saw Heilung perform live recently, and I lost track of how often I had tears in my eyes - their performance is so powerful, moving, entrancing, captivating, enchanting - there just aren't words to describe how much of an impact their music had on me.
I think this awakens somethign deep within our souls, the kind of holiness that our ancestors felt. Its all in the language tree of germanic languages. So youre english, its also a germanic language. This is the language of many of our forefathers. It is nordic, but nordic is germanic aswell and was a major party in creating english.
"Remember, that we all are brothers All people And beasts and trees And stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted"
You were probably looking for the word “primal”, because that is what Heilung does I think. They tap into an unconscious primal part of our brain. A language in rhythm and tones that is still there in our brains and a musical language that activates very primal feelings and reactions in the listener. Have a listen to Krigsaldr. I’m a pacifist in nature, but if you listen to that song, you can imagine how tribes used music to prepare warriors for war. There is aggression as an interruption in a fabric of desired peace, which makes war a necessity to survive.
Please do more Heilung reactions in the future! my new favourite from them is in their new album, the song is called "Tenet". It's a very good experience.
"Tenet" is amazing. Based in the so-called Sator Square from Pompeii. They do some really Interesting things with the music and palindrome. A magical band. Brilliant live performances, too.
Basically this song is based on runic inscriptions on bracteates and and other archaeological findings, during the "Migration Period". The only translation that is almost accurate is "Landawariar"-more-or-less "protector of the land". The kulning (high pitched, sustained vocals) was done by Annicke Shireen (who tours with them, and has her own band). STUNNING song!
The high glassy notes you are referring to comes from ancient Swedish herd calling called Kulning where women would sing those notes to call herds from long distances. This is another great element of Heilung! Heilung is one of my favorite new bands! They also fantastic to react to Heilung's live performances which are always a big show as well!
This song reminds me how we as humans have lost touch with ourselves, with nature and with the natural world. Times are more peaceful yes, but our souls are sick.
Times arent really peaceful. We kill people in greater numbers in the 20th century and now now than we ever have throughout history. humans no matter the time period are brutal to each other and these songs are when we were more of collections of small communities that had to trust each other to survive the brutality that was just beyond the edge of the campfires.
I just saw Heilung live a couple of weeks ago in Dallas, and you honestly have to go see them as their shows are just as much theater as they are performance.
Drove up from Houston to see them in Dallas as well. Fascinating band to watch live. Have wanted to see them for a couple years and wouldn't have missed it for anything.
The instrument you asked about might be a taglharpa, or a hurdy gurdy, although I couldnt find confirmation on that anywhere. Also, like other comments have mentioned, I would recommend Wardruna - Kvitravn, or maybe Andvevarljod
6:15 this style of singign is called "kulning" and is scandinavian herding call. Attleast used in sweden and norway. It really works aswell, cows come when sung to like this.
They were easily one of the top 3 performances i've ever seen live. And i've seen 400+ shows ranging from classical, metal, rap, edm, punk, country, indie, and a lot more.
I have so many songs that hit a part of me, and for a time Helvegen (live) by Wardruna and Aurora had been the undisputable king among my songs. That is, until Anoana came along. Now, I'm no hippy happy type of person and I'm usually pessimistic/realistic/down-to-earth, but for a lack of better words... There is no song like Anoana that resonates so well and so extensive with my soul and reaching some kind of primal depth I did not know is there.
I recently got to see Heilung live in Portland. Their show was altogether a unique experience; combination concert and performance art. Anoana is a peculiar song. The words are all taken from inscriptions on ornamental bronze disc's. However, the words themselves have unknown meaning, as nobody has put forward any translations. It is believed that they were meant to be protective charms and worn on the clothing of the owner. Since there is no translation the meaning of the song is truly up to the interpretation of the listener. Fascinating group for sure.
They're all incredible artists and beautiful people. I have tickets to see them live for the first time ever (in January) and I've not been this excited for a live show in a VERY long time. If you take one of the clips from the live 'LIFA' show at Castlefest, I think you'll really appreciate seeing the instruments they use : )
Always a pleasure to watch the codes switch on. As others have suggested try the LIFA live concert. In Maidjan, Krigsgaldr, Alfadhirhaiti, Othan, all from earlier work. So glad you are enjoying the start of things with this group.
I've seen some of the translations but back when I first heard some of the songs I would never have guest that I would fall in love with songs where I didn't understand the language. I'm happy to say that Heilung has more than proven that I could and did!
All three of them - Heilung - gave their blood for one of their drums and their druid createt it 🥰 What an ✨Energy✨ to send to the World and into the hearts of every soul ✨ love them
I get tears in my eyes every time I listen to this song. It is really impressive and sucks you in. Can not believe I never heard them before, now I can not get enough. Greetings from Norway. Good review 👌
Been listening to them for a while and finally saw them live at the Greek in LA last month and it was one of my favorite musical experiences to date. Their music digs deep into your soul and ancient bones. Truly an ineffable experience.
Fun fact, the music video was actually telling a story about life. I can't exactly remember what it was about per se but I read up it had a lot to do with life, the good and bad, coming to terms with heavy things and such. FUN FACT #2. The Band Name Heilung in translation means "Healing"
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Heilung is primal magic. Their music taps into ancient power in your blood and helps connect to our ancestors
They're definitely a special band, I am just starting to discover them. Mostly because they've worked with one of my all time favourite musicians Eivor. She started out playing Nordic Folk - she is from the Faroe Islands - but combines all kind of styles these days. There's 80s synth pop, indie rock, electronic, pop but the folk keeps popping up. And her voice.... be prepared to have your mind blown. Falling Free is her biggest song, but tunes like Salt or i Tokundi show off her skills and influences wonderfully as well.
Great to see Eivor get some love in the comments, cant wait to see her and Heilung at the same show in a few months. Will be a rollercoaster of emotions and amazing energy
@@danh950 Aye, I saw they're going on tour together. Unfortunately, I'll have to miss her gig on her solo tour but I am glad I'll get to see her after all a few months later. And Heilung should be an experience as well.
Should be a long "I" for pronunciation: high-lung. Which is the German word for "healing" and is pretty much a perfect way to describe the music of Heilung. Other suggestions for them: "Tenet" (which is off the same album and was written in parts and overall as a palindrome -- it's a crazy neat song). "Norupo" "Krigsgaldr" (especially the live version of the song).
Great reaction. The video imagery again harkens back to pre viking northern germanic culture. Not obvious but the birth of the child is taking place during a solar eclipse. In the culture of this time, children born during an eclipse were thought to have magic powers including healing (giving life to the dead bird), shape shifting and age shifting. The high pitched section just prior to the lullaby uses a traditional Swedish singing technique called kulning. It was used to call cows home from the pasture and also to communicate over long distances. Example by a traditional Swedish artist ruclips.net/video/KvtT3UyhibQ/видео.html.
8 month should be more than enough to go back to some Heilung experience... Please, just give a chance to Heilung live! Try In Maidjan, live from Castlefest 2017. Pretty please?
Please continue to check out their music. It's moving! Also, I think it's about time you reacted to another song by Aurora. I would recommend her video Winterbird. It was something she wanted to record at the MIT robotics lab, but it's anything but mechanical.
Music is in the blood. Call it what you like- science, history, magic, whatever other label you could give it. But what music is, at its core, is the blood singing back to us.
Geebz, I wasn't aware of this channel of yours for a while, but damn it's a nice direction you are exploring. I'm mostly a metal/rock guy, you might have seen me on your main channel, but I've had a time when I was only listening to world music for a while. I'm a fan of Heilung, but what i'd recommend in the scope of this channel is to check out the collaboration between a Turkish guitarist Erkan Oğur and an Armenian duduk player Djivan Gasparyan. I'm sure you heard Djivan's duduk in some of the movies, Gladiator comes to mind. Pure musical pleasure. I'd recommend Fuad or Mayrig for a great starting point.
Please check out the live version of In Maidjan. Kai and Maria's vocal work is amazing. I saw them a couple months ago and it was great. The atmosphere was incredible. Like stepping back in time and witnessing a ritual performed around a fire, deep in the woods on a full moon.
I listen to Heilung only once in a while because I don't want to cheapen the experience, but every time I do, my eyes water up. EVERY time. Why is that?
If no one ever said it, that mystery string instrument was probably Maria's Ravanahatha, and ancient instrument from India believed to be the first kind of stringer instrument to be played with a bow in human history.
I'll second and third many recommendations here and highlyhighly recommend you reaction to In Maidjin from their live show in 2017 (their first ever live performance) called Lifa. Mind blowing. You get to see Maria Franz (the female vocalist) go ham (speaking of soul piercing). and you get to see how they recreate their northern European Bronze Age music live. Btw their engineer is also one of the founding members, Christopher Juul. He's the guy with the black face paint and drum in the video above.
Great breakdown of this glorious song and music video. Since you liked Heilung, may I suggest you react to a group out of Siberia called OTYKEN. Their sound is Tribal mixed with modern music. The song I recommend to start with is "Phenomenon". There are English subtitles. They use traditional instruments along with more modern ones, throat singing, chanting, and just some serious awesomeness. The music video is also quite gorgeous.
I love this song. A few followers hav suggested another of my favourite bands wardruna. Kvitravn is their latest album. I'd like to suggest also skugge from the same album. Look for the lyric video it has both nordic and english translations. Other good songs to try a reaction to especially if you really like the natural earthy sounds. Try: raido. Tyr. Urur. Solringen. Lakur. Helvegan. Kvit hort. Lyfjaberg. Valuspa. Andvevarljod
Their song Tenet is also a masterpiece of production, they talked about it in an interview (clips are on youtube) and I was completely lost. That song is in lyrics and in music a palindrome, that is what I understand but hearing them talk about how its build? Just on another level of art.
I enjoyed the video as always! I am currently replaying one of my top 3 videogames of all time called Bloodborne. if you are looking for a really badass and well made OST my suggestion is the OST of Ludwig, The Accursed & Holy Blade. It sounds incredibly preposessing and impressive and in combination with the game lore and the enemy you have to defeat while this plays it still sends shivers down my spine years later.
I'm waiting for October 26'th, in which I will attend heilung live in Copenhagen, I live close to Aarhus, so a long travel in train. I can't wait to see and experience them live. Regarding pronoucing "Heilung" A way is to say "hi-lung" that should sound like it's supposed to be pronounced.😁😁
Huh, I was so sure you had done Heilung previously on your other channel, but apparently not. Found only Wardruna on there, maybe that was the memory glimpse I had. Definitely check Heilung more. Krigsgaldr, Norupo, In Maidjan.. any other song, all of them are great.
Aniana has antlers, and us a Landawarjer Land Warrior, guardian of earth. The high reguster us kulnung, or cattle calling from Scandanavia. Anoana carries power. The bonfire and Anoana's birth occur under solar eclipses, ir times of great power. The fires and dance resurrect the sun.
Heilung are an amazing band, when I need time to just pull away from the modern world I simply put on one of their albums (or sometimes one of the live shows) and find a peaceful place to lose my self in. Anoana is a beautiful piece, I have translated some of it and find myself ignoring the words. Please look at a lot more from them, Krigsgaldr is a song of war and peace, In Maidjen is a fantastic piece that was just an experiment in sound and altered state of mind, there are too many songs to recommend, so just go from album to album instead, you do connect on a more fundamental level with them
i really really like heilung great band greate vibs awsome would like to see more of them but i would also like to suggest vita imana spanish groov metal band that is really really good
They are great live! If you do another, I would suggest "In Maidjan". Their live performances are more rituals than songs and are amazing! Maria Franz has a beautiful voice
"Fylgija Futhorck" too. Really like the anglo-saxon. Sounds beautiful
Interestingly enough, "In Maidjan" by Heilung is also a soundtrack for the game Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.

there is a reason, why their liveshows are called rituals...
Chris Juul is the performer playing the hand drum and he’s the one who did all the mixing and engineering of the song. His work is fantastic.
By the way the string instrument during the lullaby is called a tagalharpa and is played by Maria.

The lullaby section is so great
Heilung is one of my favourite bands, I recommend Wardruna too if you want similar experience, especially their song "Kvitravn"

Tagelharpe or Jouhikko is the name of the stringed instrument.
PLEASE check out Wardruna. They are pioneers in such kind of music.
Its a german word - Heilung means Healing, its spelled Highlung in english^^ no problem bro... thx again for new inputs geebz! Have a nice day
You should uploud more often music from video games.
There is just so much of it .
Geebz, I highly recommend you check out the main theme of "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura" (videogame). It's a *really* beautiful track
Please look at a lot more from them, Krigsgaldr is a song of war and peace, In Maidjen is a fantastic piece that was just an experiment in sound and altered state of mind, there are too many songs to recommend, so just go from album to album instead, you do connect on a more fundamental level with them
BEATO!
