@@Legion563 thanks so much for the link! That looked like a fun show. It’s too bad COVID has delayed and cancelled so many shows here it’ll probably be awhile before they make it to the states. Then when they do it’s usually California or New York. My Boston area used to be so much better for bands when we didn’t have as many winning sports teams...lol We still have a lot of street musicians that are finally starting to play again though and a few places left that’ll feature a band like Heilung. But I’m probably going to have to drive further to a bigger city to see them if they do get here.
Heilung was for me one of those cases where the RUclips algorithm scored a huge success (your great channel was another). For me "Hamrer Hippyer" was the track and of course the thumbnail with the beautiful Maria Franz and her antlers intrigued me but then I got totally blown away at a deep emotional level right from the first moments of watching the video. I must have watched it like ten times that day alone. Everyone else is recommending "In Maidjan" which to be fair is also a great track, but I'll push "Hamrer Hippyer" because it's a great display of the three voices and a great closer for the whole show that encompasses all their performances. The language and influences come from Old Germanic pre-Roman empire traditions and it just comes to show how music just transcends time and space in an almost magical way to touch the mind and soul of an old Mexican dude that never has even been close to that region of the world, and comes from a very different culture and strong traditions. I'm still here! Awwwright!!!
Heilung sing in English, German, old-Norse, proto-Germanic... Krigsgaldr is a song about a village/tribe leaving in peace, but they're about to be attacked by invaders. They want to avoid war but are forced to go into battle.
Pronounced like High-lung. German for "healing". In German, when you see e+i together you usually pronounce it as an "i", and then i+e is pronounced as "ee". Examples people might know could be "nein" or "liebe". Sometimes they switch the letters round though when words switch into the past tense, just to mess with anybody learning the language. Anyway, as you may be able to tell, I'm bored in work, so thanks for getting me through it Geez!
Probably the best known word for English speakers that is pronounced the same way would be the Heimlich maneuver? But high would be much safer way to get it across. :)
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 as a dumb person who got relatively fluent in the past few years, I will now view myself as an inspirational figure for all the other dummies out there :)
@@bjfreshy1746 No, he is spot on. It is pretty much how those two syllables of the word are pronounced. In german, pronounciation of words generally isn't dragged like that.
These guys make some of the most simultaneously beautiful and terrifying music out there. Some of their tracks are spoken word with lots of sound effects, like it's an audio clip straight from a GoT battle scene. One of the most unique bands ive heard
There is one of these tracks were a percussion effect if like an arrow that hits a piece of wood with great power, followed by a man's scream. So intense and terrifying.
I. Love. Heilung. I’m an atheist, but I recognize the profound changes in brain function that take place during meditation, and this band and their music take my brain to a really peaceful place.
You're not an atheist you are a pagan worship what is real. Screw the best selling comic book though the best salesman ever was Jese us sacrifice is what makes you immortal..
I am SO happy you did this breakdown! The song is called Krigsgaldr, and the concert is the Lifa (Life) performance. The bands name, Heilung, is 'Healing' in German. I saw them live on their only US tour in Portland. FANTASTIC show. The crowd, including myself, was absolutely mesmerized the whole time. Thanks again for the breakdown!!!!!
I actually just made a coffee as it is 940am here in the UK...looooooooove Heilung! You need to have a go at FAUN - Odin (feat. Einar Selvik / WARDRUNA & Martin Seeberg) or Wardruna and Aurora - Helvegen (Live) !!
since he's already checked out Wardruna & Aurora (although not the super rad outdoor performance), I'd say Faun would be the way to go! They're pretty neat. Corvus Corax for some more medival inspired neo-folk music, too.
Here we go! I was at this live concert, never heard of them. Left me in a trance and been throat singing all weekend after the concert Sometimes I find it hard to believe, but this LIFA at castlefest was their very first live preformance and they headlined the festival with this show
One thing that might be of interest to an engineer: Maria, the female singer, and Christoffer, the gentleman in green, are not only married, but also owners and operators of one of the most important studio's in European folk music, Lava Studio in Copenhagen. Christoffer is a magician with mixing, and that is why you hear such an amazing mix in their work.
I don't think I've ever heard a live performance this complex, that was mixed as well as this was. It was masterful. The musicians being sound engineers makes sense.
To be fair, Geebz could play ambient white noise while he reads me the label of a shampoo bottle for 17 minutes and I’d still love it. But this was very awesome in continuing to push the limits of the channel. Also Geebz - your mug says Aries :) Is your birthday around now? So we can send you some great vibes??
Love the surf intro! Mahalo from northern Maine. Heilung pens themselves as Amplified History and is a great way to dive into what it might sound like as a North Germanic tribe before the fall of the Roman Empire (in the west)
i love how you feel the songs, not just react, when you close your eyes feel the instruments, vibe of entire performance, this is amazing, hope you do more and more unique bands reviews, you reactions are very true, that is rarity today.
OH yes, i flew a few thousand miles to see this band, and I will do it again. The trip into mystery during the concert was greater and more distance than the lengths i went to get there. I had listened to the album a number of times before i got there, but it was such a fuller experience to see them in person. I will totally try and see them again.
bro just from your expressions and overall reaction, how many emotions did you go through? this song is so intense it's FULL of grief, sadness, rage, and yet also hope. absolutely insane
They use live looping when necessary for the drones. And they use some of their own samples for nature sounds - hence the computers. Other than that it is totally live.
heya, geebz. i am very glad you found heilung. lifa is the concert, and the entire thing is AMAZING!! if you save it for reactions, that's fine, but the entire concert is something i think everyone should hear. thanks for this... made my morning!
wife and i are flying to denver in october to see them at redrock. have not been to a real concert in over 20 years. somehow i suspect this one is going to be in first place as for musical experiences.
This music is transcendent. I don't think I've ever heard an arrangement that complex be mixed so well in a live performance. Big kudos to whoever the engineers were.
The way the purity of her lines is tainted by the torment of war after the intrusion of conflict forms a symbiotic beauty of innocence and the need to survive hits hard.
Pagan folk music seems to be a trend lately, which is perfectly fine with me. My autistic daughter listens to stuff like this (Viking music, she calls it) to sleep. I'm supposing it's because of the drone, it's very inviting and warm and equalizing in her brain. Like a reset button for her. I haven't listened to all Heilung yet, but "In Maidjian" is a nice one. I really loved this reaction, thank you!
Aloha! Great band! I connect very deep with this type of music being of Slavic / German descent. Wardruna, Eluveitie, Drudkh, Solstafir are some of my favorites...
As many others have said; you have to listen to "In Maidjan" it will take you somewhere else, trust me! Also, I would love to hear you breakdown of "Locust Star" by Neurosis.
They were the first act I saw during a particular Wacken Open Air (dont remember the year), the sun was just setting and everybody was hyped for a few days of metal and carnage. But when Heilung startet up everyone got calm, like a meditation exercise for thousands of metalheads. That Show was quite the experience
I was super lucky to hear their whole performance in the festival. Not only goosebumps, but you definitely fall into this weird trans like state of mind... They are incredible. By the end of the performance it felt as if the whole crowd were in the same rhythm, the music was really inspiring the crowds dancing and whatnot, we were all like this group of waves in the sea. Experience like no other. Definitely highly recommend anyone to hear them live!
This music will literally awaken the warrior spirit. When that horn starts I get chills and goosebumps, followed by an acute burst of adrenaline. I love Heilung. Wardruna is also great and highly recommend both of them.
I love this show. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to the whole thing. It's everything I want in an A+ show. Always down to watch a reaction to Heilung.
14:40 it’s throat singing, which several northern/north eastern tribes have sung for millinia from Norse to the mongal steps! So cool and frightening! Love it. Almost like a growl, very guttural, but still on tune and almost fills the place of a guitar or rattling of a brass wind instrument. If you read this and have any further thoughts or agree respond, I’d love to see if I’m the only one who sees/picks up on these things or if I’m not quite picking up on the right things.
i always cried when i listen to their musical art, I don't know why, but the sounds are somehow ancient, even when I'm not an European descent (I'm half Indonesian and a half Chinese).
But I feel it goes beyond our notion of culture and countries of today... This speaks to an ancient, primordial culture trait our species once shared, it's like a cultural root for humanity, I can't really explain but it's definitely there. Ritualistic chanting is the kind of stuff that's in our genes as a species, and speaks louder for some people than for others nowadays I guess.
We are living in the Completed Testament Age, the time when all our ancestors are going to be liberated from their unsolved problems through us. This kind of musik helps to understand them and their mythology. Go and visit Cheong Pyeong in South Corea. The Far East is this time the Solution for the West and the rest of all Humankind. I was there with my family and friends and it became a Big Surprise for us. Give it a Try!
I listen to Alfadhirhaiti for the first time last night, by the end of it i found myself howling lol ive only started listening to them (thank you yt algorithm you did something right) but they are amazing, you can really feel the magick, i can only imagine how strong it is live, though krigsgaldr and norupo are so far my two favorites
Check out the band Euzen... it is a second project by several members of Heilung (or maybe Heilung was the second project - I dunno)... but Euzen has a more 'modern' presentation - by that, I mean they flat-out rock! It is really cool experiencing the range of musical experience between Euzen and Heilung and remembering that they are mostly the same band members. And Maria Franz is just a kick ass vocalist regardless!!
I saw them live in Chicago 2020! It was THEE best live performance I have ever been to! It was absolutely beautiful to the point I, & a few others around me, started to cry a lil This is a group that I jus want to introduce to everyone I know but at the same I know they will never feel/understand the music the way i do I hope you do more music from them! Wardruna is another amazing nordic folk music rock listen to if you haven't already
Thought you’d dig the pagan germanic performance of these cats. Keep up the good work. Very appreciative of your breakdowns and perspective as an engineer/composer.
So happy to see you cover this one. The whole concert is amazing. My favorite is Alfadhirhaiti...but it was my introduction to them, and thus will always have a soft spot in my heart.
I'm so happy to see you doing some more Nordic folk. If you like this, please check out Nytt Land, Myrkur, Anilah (with Einar Selvik, the guy who did Helvegen with Aurora) and Eivør Pálsdóttir. I've recently gotten into this stuff so much!
Female singer also sings in a Band called Euzen for ~12 years now. I really love them; I'd recommend Metamorph LIVE @ Castlefest 2015. (: And yes, I saw them live and either they get you and you are dancing in trance the whole concert, or they don't and you walk away. I don't think there are a lot of people in between.
There are some cool interview on YT (the one on Charismatic voices) from the female singer where she explains how the group came to exist to delight our ear :)
Another excellent reaction! Other Heilung tracks I'd recommend are In Maidjan or Alfadhirhaiti. I'd also love you to check Danheim's Fridr or Tyrfing or Runahild's Seidrunar. They're a bit different but very trance inducing
There's some heavy Einstürzende Neubauten influence there. They're one of the most important Industrial bands ever. Honestly all the industrial you hear today is influenced by them to some extent. Neither Nine Inch Nails or Rammstein for example would be what they are today without EN. They happen to be from Germany, as so many important industrial bands are. The name means Collapsing New Buildings. Neubauten are specifically the buildings that were built in Berlin after it was bombed to hell in WW2. So it would be cool if you reacted to them. Maybe the live versions of Was Ist Ist? Or Haüs Der Luge. They're definitely a band you want to start with a live performance in any case.
Awesome amazing.. wonderful reaction.. done from someone who carries the approach and understanding that compliments this amazing tribe. I'm a huge follower/fan/whatever.. they changed my life .. saw them in Chicago in 2020.. Anyway thank you for your video
It is an experience to say the least. They saged the whole place before they began. They talk about bringing the audience through a build, then a storm, then a come down. It is soo true. They refer to their acts as "performance history" and their concerts are more like full rituals. Saw them live and there are no words.
this is such an amazing performance!! super glad you checked it out! this speaks to my ancient northern european blood in a way that i cannot describe....

It is so great to hear the music of my ancient ancestors. I’m Danish/Swedish/English. So, I’m basically Scandinavian. My grandmother used to sing to me and my siblings, old Danish folk songs to help us sleep. We used to beg her to speak to us in Danish. Her mother and father immigrated to the USA back in the 1870s. @@MonsterMacLLC I saw them live in Glasgow in 2018 and 2bh I found the audio quite out of wack/far too loud but a hell of a experience still. Here is the video I captured of the last track of the show, Hamrer Hippyer - ruclips.net/video/ip4JvSMhQF8/видео.html
They say on their album art for this album just how complicated it was to produce, they at first thought it would be impossible to do 'the ritual' live....They succeeded epically!
The mixing is phenomenal for a live performance, given the complexity of the arrangement. Whoever the engineer was, they are a master of the craft.
❤️
This entire live show is absolutely mesmerizing. I had to click play on this right away 💜
I've been clicking reaction videos to this very performance more often than it is socially acceptable I guess😅
Yeah... though, until the next performance, it's the next best thing, lol. It's at least interesting to see what other people think of them.
Heilung sing in English, German, old-Norse, proto-Germanic... Krigsgaldr is a song about a village/tribe leaving in peace, but they're about to be attacked by invaders. They want to avoid war but are forced to go into battle.
They also have Latin lyrics as well.
"Ich bleibe" = "I stay"
"Ich blieb" = "I stayed"
German - can't speak it if you're dumb. :D
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 as a dumb person who got relatively fluent in the past few years, I will now view myself as an inspirational figure for all the other dummies out there :)
I'd say its more like High-loong
@@bjfreshy1746 No, he is spot on. It is pretty much how those two syllables of the word are pronounced. In german, pronounciation of words generally isn't dragged like that.
These guys make some of the most simultaneously beautiful and terrifying music out there. Some of their tracks are spoken word with lots of sound effects, like it's an audio clip straight from a GoT battle scene. One of the most unique bands ive heard
life is both beautiful and terrifying, as is healing, which is what Heilung means.
There is one of these tracks were a percussion effect if like an arrow that hits a piece of wood with great power, followed by a man's scream. So intense and terrifying.
They have a song where one of the instruments is literally a shield wall.
Maria Franz should be one of the biggest stars on the planet. It takes three bands to express the full range of her talents.
I. Love. Heilung. I’m an atheist, but I recognize the profound changes in brain function that take place during meditation, and this band and their music take my brain to a really peaceful place.
... Maybe your an Animist at heart.
Atheism really has nothing to do with it lol
You're not an atheist you are a pagan worship what is real. Screw the best selling comic book though the best salesman ever was Jese us sacrifice is what makes you immortal..
Kinda ironic, saying how it brings you peace while it's a war song ...but I know what you mean.
@@DerEchteBold ahh - but it's a reluctant war song.
Einar Selvik / WARDRUNA & Martin Seeberg) or Wardruna and Aurora - Helvegen (Live)
!!
since he's already checked out Wardruna & Aurora (although not the super rad outdoor performance), I'd say Faun would be the way to go! They're pretty neat. Corvus Corax for some more medival inspired neo-folk music, too.
@@Enochulator oh yeah, I have watched the Wardruna/Aurora one as well...see, coffee was needed!
Faun - Odin for sure! Einar's voice is big chicken skin vibe
Yes Odin by Faun would be amazing!
I will never forget the first time i watched this full show, mesmerizing stuff
Here we go! I was at this live concert, never heard of them. Left me in a trance and been throat singing all weekend after the concert
Sometimes I find it hard to believe, but this LIFA at castlefest was their very first live preformance and they headlined the festival with this show
Them horns send chills down my spine every time I hear this song!
I have tickets for Heilung in December this year...fingers crossed.
I absolutely love this group. They sing in about 7 different languages. High German. Norse. Old German English.
It's that a thing? Can we like... Get a video of that?
I'm there, and yes his birthday was last weekend iirc.
😂😂😂
You will love "In Maidjan" by Heilung :) It's awesome
Spiritual, deeply moving, love it never heard of this Thank you, never to old to learn 🥰❤️
Saw them live last year in Chicago right before covid shut everything down. It was one of the most surreal and spiritual experiences I've had.
I've seen them live and I am still vibrating from that experience! Very heavy in Celtic and Norse artistry. LOVE IT
Yes, this has to be viewed as a ritual rather than just music.
I love how you can hear her clacking the bones over all the other instruments.
They use live looping when necessary for the drones. And they use some of their own samples for nature sounds - hence the computers. Other than that it is totally live.
glad to see someone else point this out. i just spent like 10 minutes replying to people trying to explin it lol
@@StarWarriorMusicThey aren't an orchestra, so they have to "automate" some parts of the song that are repetitive or background noise.
heya, geebz. i am very glad you found heilung. lifa is the concert, and the entire thing is AMAZING!! if you save it for reactions, that's fine, but the entire concert is something i think everyone should hear. thanks for this... made my morning!
I saw them live in 2019 right before Covid hit the world. It is amazing to see them perform. It really is a chickenskin giving experience :)
If I could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
wife and i are flying to denver in october to see them at redrock. have not been to a real concert in over 20 years. somehow i suspect this one is going to be in first place as for musical experiences.
Their video to the song Norupo is awesome. BTW those are human bones she's playing.
Great band. Hypnotic soul candy.
This music is transcendent. I don't think I've ever heard an arrangement that complex be mixed so well in a live performance. Big kudos to whoever the engineers were.
Her name is maria franz and her voice is otherworldly..heilung's other stuff is even more amazing
I stumbled across this a few years ago and played this concert 2 times in a row.. love it
t
his band was the last live experience i had before the pandemic, and yeah, it was definitely a moving transformative experience
I have this whole show on cd and it is soooo fantastic.
Aloha!
DUDE HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE?!?!?! love this project and have been a fan for years!
I have seen this band twice in London. Amazing.
I'm so excited . Going to see them in October in Colorado. Yeah!!!
I absolutely LOVE Heilung ever since I was introduced to them by my gf! I was shown "Norupo" by them. I really recommend that next!!
I love that you've found Heilung! Looking forward to more if you do.
i always cried when i listen to their musical art, I don't know why, but the sounds are somehow ancient, even when I'm not an European descent (I'm half Indonesian and a half Chinese).
I was at the show where they recorded this. It was uh-mazing! Very cool. A true experience.
Maria Franz, The voice of Heilung and most important, the voice of Mother Earth !!!
I love this song, it awakens something primal in me.
Happy you took the time to check them out.....Othan is really good.... Maria is awesome.
The most melodic song of the amazing LIFA show... if cutting the whole up, I'd say Alfadhirhaiti and Hamrer Hyppier are my personal favorites.
Same two songs for me!
@@gossegotha Same as well here :)
Alfadhirhaiti is the most non metal metal song I've heard. The latter song you've mentioned is a favorite too.
I keep going back to Norupo every time, for some reason that one just does it for me.
It was absolutely beautiful to the point I, & a few others around me, started to cry a lil
This is a group that I jus want to introduce to everyone I know but at the same I know they will never feel/understand the music the way i do
I hope you do more music from them!
Wardruna is another amazing nordic folk music rock listen to if you haven't already
I was at the Chicago ritual also!! Best live experience of my life, and it brought me to tears a couple times too.
Going to see them in 2-days - can’t wait!
And yes, I saw them live and either they get you and you are dancing in trance the whole concert, or they don't and you walk away.
Great idea man! Let's start with the "Lament" album in whole.
@@thomasmeyer8798 I wouldn't object to it. But I'd rather see a Ghosts 1 to 4 reaction. Or maybe one for Locusts.
I heard that industrial influence in there too. But I am not sure wether it was EN whom were influenced by these types of ancient rythms
Great band, my old EN T-shirt disintegrated years ago...
i have seen them live once and it was absolutely magic and moving. you cant even put it in words
I absolutely love Heilung. But what I love even more is the moment someone who is listening for the first time falls in love with them too
Awesome amazing.. wonderful reaction.. done from someone who carries the approach and understanding that compliments this amazing tribe. I'm a huge follower/fan/whatever.. they changed my life .. saw them in Chicago in 2020.. Anyway thank you for your video
Ive seen them live and it was an other worldly experience
It is an experience to say the least. They saged the whole place before they began. They talk about bringing the audience through a build, then a storm, then a come down. It is soo true. They refer to their acts as "performance history" and their concerts are more like full rituals. Saw them live and there are no words.
It was actually a shamanic ritual. At the end he brought everyone out of the trance
this is such an amazing performance!! super glad you checked it out!
this speaks to my ancient northern european blood in a way that i cannot describe....
Heilung is one where you really can keep your eyes open. Total experience!
Number 9 aries here, april 10th, and I love that mug lol. anyways, listen to that whole concert, Marias voice is haunting . she is easily my favorite female vocalist and her range is unreal.
I’m 72 and still remember the sweet times I spent with her as a child. She made the best chicken and dumplings I’ve ever tasted.
Thanks for highlighting this performance.
I am a huge fan! My preferred song in this album is 'Alfadhirhaiti'. Heilung has helped me a lot in these pandemic times.
I had spent nights listening and mesmerized by the sound of its songs.
I strongly recommend Heilung as a great immersive experience as well.
There is often so much elegance in simplicity, it is fuel for imagination and creativity.
Also...they are touring and I see them in December...very excited!!
DUDE! You have to react to RIFFLORD - Tumbleweed!!!
I cannot believe this band is not more well-known. They are legends of underground. I think you would love them brother and so would is your subscribers!
I’m dropping this comment in a ton of your videos because nothing would make me more happy than seeing you listen to this for the first time!
Thank You for your time and energy too! Well appreciated! I listen to that sond many many times and i am absolutly amateur regarding musical knowledge - but you provided me with insides which made this masterpice of a journey even more profound. Thank You! happy to found ya
Got to see them 2018 at the Wacken Open Air. I had no Idea who they are, And the Show was Late evening. Best concert I ever saw.
Heilung is unique, very talented musicians!
That concert video first popped up for me a few months ago. When I clicked on it I was not disappointed. The primal sounds and atmosphere goes straight to the soul.
If you want more Heilung, try Norupo - Official Video. They are literally dancing runes in the woods. And the harmonic layers are stunning.
