  • In this video, I react for the first time to the enchanting EIVØR performing ‘Tròdlabùndin’ Live. In this video, I analyse her amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This was truly enchanting! She mixed all kinds of vocal techniques including beatbox and everything in between!

That is my countrywoman, Eivør Pálsdóttir. We're from the Faroe Islands. Her singing is actually a mixture of a lot of folk not just Faroese but like from everywhere. I think there's even some Native American elements in her singing but don't quote me on that. If you want to hear something more like Faroese traditional folk, try listening to Týr. They are a folk metal band and they often sing traditional Faroese ballads. Some of them include: Ormurin Langi, Regin Smiður, Fípan Fagra, Torsteins kvæði, Tróndur í Gøtu and several more. They have also dabbled with Norwegian and Danish ballads and here I recommend Sinklars vísa and Ramund Hin Unge.
I hope to see you enjoy more Faroese stuff. :)

I think the influences you talk about, like the Native American, goes much further back in time, to the music that inspired both Faroese/Nordic and Native American folk music. It's digging deep down in to the roots of being human.

I have to say that your analyses are on another level compared to other voice teachers/singers. I'm not sure but I'd say that you've been given the absolute pitch ability. In order to properly explain what is happening behind what we hear, one first should be able to hear and distinguish all the details and embellishments. On top of this, I think that you are a brilliant educator. These two rare gifts combined make you a very rare individual. You are honoring both gifts so beautifully with these videos you share with us. Keep up the good work because teachers like you have the ability to leave a deep positive impact on young talented people. There are many negative things in life that are making it very hard for young singers to succeed, but teachers like you are able to give inspiration to continue and pursue that path in spite of troubles. God bless you. Have a nice day.

She is from the Faroe islands, just in case no one had mentioned it yet :P She is my grand cousin i believe it is (The Faroese are very interested in family relations and how everyone is related to each other). I remember hearing, how she would go around her village and record some of the older folk songs that the elders remembered to try and preserve them for the future.
She has a big range of nordic folk styles and more alternative genres in her repertoire.
Can highly recommend more of her music - pretty much any song from her album 'Slør' 'Bird on a wire' 'Falling free' and many more

Your pronunciation is not perfect but it really really good (good ear, my friend). Eivør has a master's degree in "North Atlantic traditional vocal techniques" - and she is unleashing her 6 years of study here (combined with her insane talent). A jodle - Norse lokk/kulning is as far as I know an example of "parallel evolution" to the Jodle that evolved later in the European Alps.
She is also blending in the traditional techniques of the Sami people's ancient "Joik" with the Inuit/circum Atlantic tradition of throat singing and vocalising inhalations.
There is a reason why we Norwegian men are a bit careful around singing women. They have a tendency to lure us into the underworld with their powerful singing. I am old enough to have grown up with grandmothers and grandaunts who knew how to "lokke" (call) animals free roaming in the mountains home.
(Edit - I am not going anywhere near Eivør that we as a nation have adopted as our own I secretly love her, though)

Hello ! I have just stumbled across this reaction video, because I was curious to see how YOU would find this incredible song... and your reaction was fabulous ! I love seeing other people falling in love with Eivor immediately, especially when hearing and seeing her with this special performance. Eivor is a 40 year old singer, songwriter and actress from the Faroe Islands (situated between iceland and Scandinavia) and has a big variety of different music styles, such es alternative rock, jazz, rock, singer/songwriter, folk and also classical music, since she is a classically trained soprano.
As a next song from Eivor, I can HIGHLY recommend to react to "Falling free (Live at the Old Theatre in Torshavn)" Believe me, you'll be as mesmerized and blown away, as you were here, although it's a TOTALLY different music style. So may I kindly ask you to react to this special song, please ?
Best wishes from Germany : Gerry

I got to watch Eivør live back in the late 90's, and later again in the Copenhagen opera house in the early 2000's and both performances were out of this world. I walked around in days afterwards, humming her tunes to myself, lost in thought. The only other singer who has ever left me like that was Bjørk.

Wow... your analysis of my divine Faroese sweetheart couldn't have been much better.. it even surpassed the Charismatic Voice whom I hold in very high regard. The fact that you were able to instantly replicate Eivør's transitions, inflections and throaty goodness proved to me right there that you know of what you speak. And to think this was my first time viewing your channel... I guess I have a lot in store for me! A truly wonderful and witty review. Looking forward to watching more...
oh and, like so many here have been recommending.. YES, you MUST check out Eivør's absolute stunner live performance of Falling Free at the Old Theatre in Tórshavn.. the quaint yet very beautiful capital of the Faroe Isles. And some runner ups would have to be the absolutely gorgeous song that is Í Tokuni where you see her floating like an angel in mystical landscapes of Iceland.. and then her touching love story with none other than the Reaper himself in the video True Love. Yes.. a true Faerie indeed...
ps. Very pleased to meet you.. albeit virtually ;) Ciao!

Watching your videos, and seeing you just get so excited for all the different elements makes me feel less alone in my wonder, and I get to learn how much truly goes into the different sounds. It's just amazing! Thank you!

"wake me up", live because it's timeless and without folk-elements, but with absolute breathtaking vocals
"gloomy sunday" because she looks damn sexy in suit and tie and delivers the best cover of this famous song
"boxes" live 2012 because she uses her higher register in this song
"truth" live at studio bloch because it's simply a phenomenal modern song with her lower register
"falling free" because it's such a magic performance i never get tired to listen to
"slor" london solo sessions because this song is stripped down to her, her voice and her guitar and it's such a wonderful piece of music
"í tokuni" music video because it has such an amazing beat and the music video is both eerie and facinating
or anything else because there will no disappointment anyway!

Found her through this song. Watched her life on stage twice, since then. Last time even with her lovely sister Elinborg.
Pls look out for some videos of her, playing for just a few people at her mom's house. I can't find the online concerts she played from home in Kobenhavn with her hubby and sister, during the pandemic.
Anyone got links to that? They where gorgeous!
If you get to meet her in person: pls adress her as: "Dame Eivoer". 'Cause since the summer of 2021, she is officially a "Knight of the Danish Empire".
Greetings from the far north of Germany!

Eivor is unique artist who grew up with traditional Faroese songs. As far I know her first album is based on those songs and also religious Danish songs. She uses old, traditional technics and instruments from Nordic culture but she also uses modern technics. Her songs are all about the love. She has so different colours. She can sing pop, folk, rock, jazz or even some opera. As far I know she studied at the University of Music in Reykjavik. And I highly recommend to go to her live show. Besides, her sister also is a singer and she has her first demo. It's very stylish and unique as well. But what's most important besides English she sings in Faroese.
