What's going to hurt this game the most is people expecting a standard space sim similar to SC or X4 when this is a much more niche simulation of a starship in the style of Star Trek. If you don't know what that means then you aren't going to like this game. This is a game for people who want to crawl around Jeffries Tubes, fix complex faults in a warp core, and otherwise serve aboard a starship as if they were inside an episode of TNG.

I think that's the dragon that most of the starship crew simulators (in the vein of FTL) which have come out over the past ten years have been chasing. I think there's a big market for an honest to goodness TNG simulator

That's the thing that is so nuts and awesome about this game. He's not just bunging fake engines on and calling it a day. It's engines that connect to the systems they need to connect to. He's designing a full starship.

There is one real good use for the holodeck. Training and testing game features and updates. The back story would be that Earth HQ (Devs) want feedback from “certain crew members” about upcoming features, planets, items, tech etc. player for example gets a message from HQ to test an upcoming ground vehicle, shuttle or rifle for example. The crewman goes into the “holodeck” that is a 1 /1 replica of their ship in which to “test” the new item before it is added to a future update. So the holodeck could be remotely turned off and on by HQ and when “on” player can “visit” anytime they want when it is active. So if the item conflicts with the ship in some way it won’t “damage” the players actual ship only the holodeck version. On completion of task the player is asked to fill out a survey from the holographic bridge comm station about what they think of that item or what needs to be fixed or improved. That “survey” is sent back to HQ for the Devs to evaluate player feedback without recoding the game until they decide to add it later or not. In a sense it would involve the players as extra game testers. Payments could be a free item upgrade or “credits” for when they visit merchants etc.
Say the sensors have a glitch. HQ turns on the HD to test code to see if it solves the glitch players are getting. If players say yes, the fix goes into the next game patch that their ship updated “while the player slept” when off line.
In other words the holodeck could be a mini game tester/ player survey to see if it’s worth bringing into the real game. So if it were a rifle, the player. cannot carry it off their holodeck into their actual ship for example, but could test its ability to damage ship interiors and fake NPC crew instead of their own. So no loss of “real” crew or repair resources.
So this way the holodeck version”clone” inside the players ship would not require any different coding of other “worlds” like Star Trek did it would just test and survey players about items, glitches, planets and future tweaks etc. thoughts?

As someone who loves this type of game but usually sticks with singleplayer or multiplayer with friends, the “this is a singleplayer game first” statement was such an incredibly reassuring one. Games like Barotrauma, Pulsar, Void Crew, etc are able to be played solo, but they’re obviously not designed to be. Happy to have a singleplayer first game in this genre.

Having played the demo for hours, I'm really excited to see what you guys are going to do! A proper simulator is sorely needed for Star Trek, where the ships are a very important part and occupy so much screen time and the technology and the lore behind it is very detailed and seems much more realistic and achievable when compared to stuff like Star Wars or 40K.
But Fleetyard Studios be warned, people will compare Starship Simulator to Star Citizen a lot. While CIG has made a lot of questionable decisions, I think Star Citizen is still a great game despite requiring a different approach to playing it.
I just want the devs to not be discouraged; people consume a lot of false stuff regarding Star Citizen and a lot of news regarding it is sensationalized for views. People are disappointed and have been let down by several developers lately and they are wary of new studios.
Regardless, please continue doing what you have! I already love Starship Simulator and I'm sure things will improve even further. Cheers guys! LLAP.

Star Citizen lets you pay thousands of dollars for a game that isn't even in beta yet. They had a fully functional shop front before they had stable multiplayer. If they don't want to be sensationalised, they can start by not milking their customers for sensational amounts of money. There are projects that died on the vine because Star Citizen poisoned the well of crowdfunding, they have burned every last shred of goodwill they are due.

  • @quoniam426
    @quoniam426 5 месяцев назад +8

Single player campaigns, that's good news. I was afraid of this game being only multiplayer.
Why didn't Star Trek owners didn't do such a game (STO is nowhere near that level)
The hangar bay could work 'the old way' in Star Trek as well, it's just that they used forcefields in the shows to simplify screenplays but if you look at the main doors to the corridors, they are heavyduty doors that can whisthand sudden change of air pressure, essentially, the hangar bay is a huge airlock. Crew boards the craft, personnel evacuates the hangar, air is siphoned and the external door opens to let the craft go in or go out. To sum it up, no needs for a Force field, even in Star Trek because they also have external doors/curtains as well...
As for holodecks, Star Trek doesn't use them only for recreation, they can have various uses such as criminal or archeological recreation enquiries, combat simulations... So those functiunalities can still be implemented into the game, (gaining experience for the crew, preparing for a mission, etc). For example, tutorials could ne run in such a room.
We have VR now but in two hundred years? Holodeck is not toally out of possibility. A drawback could be implemented to limit it's use (massive drain on power for example as the ships don't use proper Warp Drives but just Fusion Drives which are much less potent theoritically) so they could be used only outside of FTL, when you lose the most time (when not moving, relatively speaking).
And for special occasion, a special settinbg could be designed (festive meetings for the crew, etc), it would require a simple environment, sampled from those existing on planets. No need to create medieval programs or other games.
Star Trek Discovery has something halfway through a Holodeck tech.
Now let's hope that the devs didn't see too big on their promises. Don't do a KSP2, guys !
We'll wait and we will be watching, closely.

Devin Horner, you have no idea how hyped I am for it. If you were to advertise that you can add game modes where there is a saboteur or perhaps alien on board (in the style of Space Station 13) you will gain a HUGE community of people interested in this. You make a video explaining this possibility and watch the donations pour in. Trust me.

I'm not even sure there would need to be a separate game mode; I think any interactions with other races always carries the risk of a possible intrusion, the same as when you interact with alien artifacts / technology - there's always a risk of a computer virus or some other nasty thing happening; though it would make for an uber cool game in its own right (which they may well implement). I'm also buzzed for the whole project - it looks like we will be able to do the things we longed to do in Star Trek games, but were not able to. There are live dev streams on Wednesday's and Sunday's at 8pm (BST) if you're interested in progress updates.

This sounds amazing always wanted a starship game where every little thing, needs to be managed rather than just having a single ship with a basic healthbar and bare minimum things to manage.
It would great if you had a character and could be any role on the ship such a lowly crewman, taking jobs from the AI department head or being a department head and sending out AI crewmen, to do jobs most ship games only have you as the captain or a bridge officer and that gets stale after a while.

4:55 one thing i will note is its not just an alpha build its a live dev build which should be emphasised as most early access titles don’t give access to dev builds at most they give a experimental/test build as a optional thing usually.
To note an example of what that effects is when he was reworking the stair wells as well as some hall ways they were broken for us as well because dev builds include unfinished changes directly as it’s technically essentially the same build the devs run.
I actually like it when they give access to the dev build because it makes feed back much more effective as well as allows us too see a lot more as it comes though i do prefer a stable build option to be there as well.

A holodeck could procedurally generate a planet surface like any other but without either the rewards or risks associated with an actual planet landing.
And it could be restricted by what the player has already explored, so e.g. if you've never landed on a planet with trees before the holodeck won't generate them. Though that's becoming potentially overly cumbersome on dev time as you say.

I think wormholes could believably be adapted by an advanced civilizations in many ways, also a holo-deck is unequivocally within our own conceivable future, I would say well within 100-200 years we will have the ability to have completely realistic environments either played out in our cyber-brain or transmitted to our neural interfaces. It may not require a deck per se but consider one possibility that so much bandwidth can only be transmitted over very short distances and therefore you might setup a special location/room/deck for this specific activity ;)

a holodeck realistically couldn't be made out of newtonian light, you would need some future tech capable of producing hard light points, but even that would be like touching a mirror. the only way a holodeck like in star trek would be feasible is if teleporter technology is developed, generate matter based on an atomic number generator that forms matter into what ever scene you want, then you would need an instant nuclear decaying process to re absorb all the matter that was created. holosex isnt all fun in games, these psycho paths using the holodeck in star trek are making living breathing creatures, using them, then zapping them into oblivion along with there left over DNA deposit potentially starting the process of creating life then nuking it into nothingness in a blink of an eye is insane. honestly holodecks in star trek should be alot more controversial in world. Rikers twin and James Moriarty coming to life are testaments to what could go wrong. instead of making more datas, they should just be cloning people and supplementing there military strength in times of need. virtual neural holodecks ala "Avatar" like you said would be the most feasible and least detrimental to human morality.

Actually I've heard that scientists are actually working on the Alcubierre warp drive, if they haven't actually secretly made it already, there is a patent on it, and NASA released fully detailed schematics of the ring, and they also had that 3D model of the NASA warp ship, and based on the current electrogravitic technology, it's also possible they've figured out gravity floor plates that creates an artificial pulling force on whatever is above the floor, a necessity for a long range FTL ship, so, the theoretical warp technology might actually be not so theoretical and more as under research and development.

The exponential energy requirement curve says we aren't going faster than light by any method of propulsion.
We could get to .5c or .75c no problem but accelerating anything with mass from below to above C is still impossible, according to physics.

    • @tiberius8390
      @tiberius8390 5 месяцев назад

@@modelcitizen1977 Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Alcubierre / Warp drive gets around that by compressing and expanding space time. The ship is not moving inside the bubble and you are not moving it faster than light speed. It's basically the precursor to "folding space" and making the distance between two points in space zero (aka "wormhole tech").
also @onidaaitsubasa artificial gravity plates are kind of hard to imagine. Then again you are compressing and expanding spacetime with the drive. That technology could theoretically also create an artificial gravity... not in every single floor plate though. That would be overkill for what it takes. I would imagine some "gravity generator" in the lower part of the ship.

Trouble is, while the fact the galaxy will barely be explored might sound appealing, it just kind of makes previously explored systems utterly useless, because you'll never be able to explore all previously explored ones, nor would it be in your benefit to do so, to the point where they may as well just be randomly generated on the fly. Like the more stars/planets there are to explore, the more insignificant each one becomes because you can only have so many variations, and each will likely be just as barren as the majority of Elite's are.

BTW I hope SC is good, not a slight against the project but dangling a carrot for 10 years seems like a problem to me. This seems like my kind of game I mainly space truck in Elite Dangerous, so it would be cool to enjoy something like this.

The thing that surprised me is SC seems to be atleast somewhat back on track in the last year or so.
Do note i said somewhat. In that content releases while never on original schedule are actually coming out in a fairly predictable manner.
It helps iv never spent a cent on it past my original kickstarter and i would honestly encourage others not to buy the ships from the cash shop. if you only pay what it takes to play its very easy to get your moneys worth as is.

@@nathnathn I actually agree, this year in particular it has been pretty good. But it seems like they might miss some of the end of the year goals as is. Still looks at least somewhat promising that it seems like Chris Roberts is seeing the writing on the wall that the money well is starting to dry up. BTW I only have the pack that comes with Star Squadron so I have spent the minimum and would say the couple of successful missions I have done it has been fun. But still has a long way to go for sure.

that atmospheric laser will never work in space, you would have to have a , conforming tractor beam hold the shape of ejected "gas" like a police stun gun then initiate the charge firing the laser. thats why the shiva star of the marauder program was so deficient even in atmosphere. lol a self containing plasma ball like a miniature sun with its own micro gravity ejected out of a "plasma rail gun system" may be the only way for a plasma weapon to make any kind of contact. Maybe some form of hybrid physical torpedo that ejects gas behind it, could be fired at a target then the atmosphere is ignited like some un stabalized kylo ren light saber esque weapon system. capacitor probes with stun gun electable prongs to inject high level of energy into a ship may be more realistic.
