  • A walk around The Bolling Hall.
Bolling Hall is one of the oldest buildings in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is currently used as a museum and education centre. It is full of mystery and history.
But did you know the significance of Pocahontas with the decedents of The Bolling Family?
The original Bolling Hall was mentioned in the Doomsday book, and part of the original wall is still standing in the grounds?

Thank you so much for giving us all the information from Bolling Hall. Just recently, my granddaughter and I have been doing our Family tree. Our ancestor's were the Rookes family at Royd's Hall. I believe Alice Anne Rooke (who my grandmother was named after) married Tristram Bolling and if I remember correctly, one of their children married into the Tempest family. If you have anymore information, I would love to know about it.
    Kind regards, Tracy 😊

That looks like a lovely place for a picnic, there under the trees. It's interesting to see the different sections that were added to the Hall at different times. I have a friend who lives over in Royton, when I go to visit we plan to come out and see this for ourselves. Thank you for showing us a bit of history!

A good time to visit is in the Spring. All the trees in the formal garden are cherry and the whole place turns pink with the blossoms. Photographers come from miles around.

My best mate in the 90s was from east bowling this is a very cool way to spend time-for free! The ruined wall round the back is far far older than the house it always fascinated me, I've meant to visit at Christmas but never have yet lol ✌️

It's well worth the visit. As teenagers (back in the 1980's), myself & a few others used to go swimming at the school next door & then there to look around. The tv program Most Haunted did a show here too.

This is the initial Bolling came from France and was called Boulogne working its way to Bolling and after the Tristam Bolling b 1530 d 1561it seems no further Bollings owned Bolling Hall it had become the Tempest residence after Rosamund married Richard tempest, i think this is maybe when the Bollings moved to USA, at one point the Bollings had a Home called New hall in Cheshire before moving to Bolling Hall. I wonder where the Bradford Bollings are buried it says Bradford Cathedral, but are they still there? or were they moved? such an important family i would have thought they would be inside the Cathedral.

I can trace my lineage to the Bollings back twenty-two generations to my nineteenth great-grandfather, John De Boling lII, who died in 1340. If my research is correct, they inherited the house much later. Colonel Robert Thomas Bolling , my ninth great-grandfather's first wife was Jane Rolfe, who was the granddaughter of Pochohantas; sadly, I'm related to his second wife Anne, so there is no direct connection between me and Pochohantas, but the family is very special on both sides of the Atlantic.

Col. Robert Bolling of Virginia married Thomas Powhatan Rolfe’s daughter, Jane Powhatan Rolfe. After the death of Pocahontas, Thomas was taken in to be cared for by John Rolfe’s brother & wife while he carried on. My understanding is that Chief Powhatan died two years after Pocahontas, in 1619...and 3 years later, in 1622, official reports state that John Rolfe was killed in the so-called ‘Indian Uprising’ of 1622. Which was blamed on Powhatan’s Brother and chief of the Pamunky branch of the Powhatan nation. Personally, I think he was framed. I also think John was murdered by his own, in order to start a war with the Powhatan. I also think Pocahontas was poisoned soon after she boarded the ship in Harwich, while dining with Thomas Dale, the then Governor of Virginia, if memory serves.
Pocahontas and John lived at Heacham.
Thomas was taken to Virginia by his Uncle, soon after John’s death, and the Uncle demanded ‘inheritance’ which was given in the form of land tracts.
The Bolling family became intertwined with the Powhatan through Jane, Thomas’ Daughter.
