I'm very impressed by this channel. Very well presented histories. The people involved seem passionate about local tales and legends. Five *
Thanks for connecting ๐
Excellent video as always I hope the people of Bradford appreciate you gentlemen for all your dedicated work kind regards from Somerset
Much appreciated. Thank you.
I saw Gary glitter and his band here in the early 70s . Also saw Paul young in the late 80s
I remember going there in the 60s to watch the wrestling with my parents. Also had my smallpox jab there
I remember going to see wrestling, too. Brilliant night out!
I remember this well, we used to go to the vaults bar in the basement, great video ๐
It always seems like councils love wiping out all our historical buildings , for some reason they don't seem to like heritage
Another excellent video, thanks to all on your team.
excellent post
Thank you
When I was a child, I remember a match seller/beggar who used to stand near that Alexander hotel, or maybe a building further up. He had a grey beard, but it looked ginger around his mouth. I thought as a kid he had a rusty mouth because he was often drunk.
What a shame this beautiful building was demolished , but they call this progress I call sacrilege
colin walker and Ray ramsay pulled that hotel down. there firm was called CDS demolition
Thanks Buddy
Remember going in the vaults in the mid 70s (had a great juke box and then upstairs college in the early 80s
I was fortunate to go in the building a few years before demolition and it was in a very poor structural condition. The building wasn't solid stone, but very poor rendered brickwork with some stone facings, (which can be seen on the demolition photos and possibly why it was never listed) that had been altered so many times the structural stability was compromised which was evident throughout the building. There were also concerns the foundations were inadequate for the slope the building was built on.
I didn't move to Bradford until 1996 - so don't remember the hotel - but I do remember the carpark before the college built the ATC. Very interesting!
Why did they have to make it so high
I hope they are keeping them there and not removing them
Fantastic video...
Many thanks
I remember the big old hotel building when I was at Bradford college in 1970s.
When the council buy something you no it's doomed it's an excuse to demolish beautiful buildings so sad and it's still going on now
Another cracking video lads. Keep up the great work. You're a credit to the City.
Much appreciated
I'd forgotten about the filling in of the tunnel I live at Ogden and remember following wagons up Thornton road on my way home from work.
Very good watch, a shame the building fell into disrepair but wonderful to learn my university had such a wonderful hotel near it for so long.
Would you do piece on the swan arcade
Definitely deserves a video. Will have a look at it once we have enough content. Thank you.
Thank you ..
I only ever remember it as the Beer Cellar.
The hotel opened in 1878 but what was it before it a was a hotel?
A property called West Brook House stood on the grounds surrounded by gardens. These were swept away for the hotel.
@@markmemphis7313 wow interesting! Funny you should say thatโswept awayโ, itโs ironic as windows in cellars.
I read that the Barbarians rugby club was founded at the hotel
Great video again
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi gents, thanks for taking the time to make this film. I remember the building clearly from the 1980's and marvelling over its architecture. Please keep up your great work, it is really appreciated.
You're welcome, and thank you for the support ๐
I spent a lot of the 70s in the Vaults Bar and the Alex Bar, great to see this.
My great grandfather William Samuel Rabone was the general manager at the empire theatre before and during the second world war years.I still have his ID card from the day he was there..I worked on the roof in 1981,bradford roofing contractors reslated the building in the late 80's and it was demolished in the early 90's..what a waste...excellant video gents as always....
The Olympus! I seem to remember Seabrook's Crisps round about there as well?
I remember the excellent Seabrooks Fish and Chips restaurant/ takeaway. In the early seventies, a crust was cheaper than a slice of bread to go with your fish and chips meal. Not sure if the place was linked to Seabrooks Crisps though.
I seem to think that Seabrook's Fish Shop was in some way connected to Seabrook's Crisps. I may be wrong of course. Can anyone clarify this for us?
Seabrook started out with a chippy before they went into crispsโ@@michaelwatterson2965
Great stuff. Thanks for this.
You're welcome
Yet another piece of Bradford history that had been refused to be saved, just the frontage would be enough! great video guys.
Thank you
The building was worn out and it wasn't the best piece of architecture in Bradford. It was built from brick and stucco rather than stone like most other contemporary buildings.
Drank in the Vaults bar in the seventies. This brings back many memories.
Me too๐
History and the amazing background of these structures are being.....erased
Nice upload shame a beautiful building I live in sheffield and we are losing all our old buildings over 100 years the old Court house near lady's bridge is heading the same way as this hotel...
Seems to be a common theme ๐ข
So very sad. Never forget. ๐๐ผ

I loved the trolley buses. I'm sure it was the 1960s when dad took us from Saltaire up to Shipley. Is the tram going up to Shipley Glen still there?
Hi, I believe there is a tram service at Shipley Glen, a bit more of a tourist attraction.
