This was an interesting piece! They would have been keen to avoid that cause of death at inquest because they girls would have been refused burial in the churchyard. For the girls to walk out of their shift at work there was something very wrong. They would have lost their jobs for that, so they’d made a decision that they wouldn’t be going back. I’m interested to know what the evidence is for them being from comfortable homes though - girls of 13 and 14 working in the mills in 1887 were working to help feed the family. By that time, girls from comfortable homes would be helping in the home at that age or staying in education if family finances allowed it. There’s a lot more that we will unfortunately never know.
Maybe the girls waded into the water not realising how deep it was, or maybe one fell in, and the other jumped in to try and save her, and sadly they both drowned
What a Dark Confusing ,Weird and very very Tragic Story. Great video and research thankyou for putting this together for us. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks so much you guys for these video's. We used to regularly walk from Haworth Road down to Chellow Dene. Never ever heard of this story. I left Bradford for Australia in 1967, but your video's keep the link strong.
I remember as a youngster being told that the water here was dangerous and to never paddle or swim in it. I wounder if that was related to this terrible story. RIP girls
I myself once with a friend jumped into to this deadly reservoir but on the edge and got into difficulty as the floor beneath me gave way and i felt the big drop off but was lucky as i had hold of a small branch off a tree which helped me pull myself back onto the ledge and then out of the water. Hot weather temps people into the water. My advice to everyone is stay away from all still water its very dangerous especially reservoirs as often they have underwater currents which pull you under..stay safe always people. Nothing is worth risking your life. A boy just drowned in this same place yesterday which shows how deadly this site actually is.
One of them could've gone into the water and got into difficulties, and the other tried to save her and also drowned. It happened to members of my coworkers' family last year, resulting in 3 deaths.
To make such a decision there has to be more to the story, sadly the girls have taken it to their graves and noone will ever know. A very sad story. RIP.
It could have been an accidental drowning. September can get heatwaves and maybe they like so many other children decided to go for a swim to cool off. It sounds more plausible. If this took place during the winter months it would be very unusual but because it was summer I think it would have been accidental not intentional.
what a sad story, not sure if this is relevant but years ago i had a pub & one of my customers marriage broke up & he was so depressed, however one night he came in quite well if not happy contented, so much so we thought he was getting over the split, that night he committed suicide, it seems the contentment was due to the fact he's made his mind up to end it all
Will you go to the devils cave.love to know the history of it and the quarry spent so much time in there when I was a kid. And then me and my son plinking with air rifles. Is it still open. Is the milk moniters metal crate still there from Allerton school.and of course the lovely bottle tip on the right hand side as you turn left at the bus terminus down prune park. Love that stuff your doing fella
Hi, I agree. Theres been a lot of requests for this one. I believe it's all filled in. If there is enough content to film , I will definitely look into it. Thanks for asking.
That would be rather interesting wouldn't it, I also used to knock around there as a kid an took my kids round there and my mate with his, having fun with air rifles. Ha fun times.. Those grooves in the big old stones from the horse an carts always made my imagination wander... The bottle tip down prune Park Lane?? If its the same one that I'm thinking of, was on my grandparents land, and apparently it used to be a tip, used to find loads of bottles on there, especially when the cows had been on there..
this is so heartbreaking! the toughness of living in this time period. There is assumptions being made here, it may well have been suicide apparently, they were wrapped in each others arms when found, so sad! they were very young and at that age we take risks a bit wild maybe it was death by folly a tragic accident. We shall never know.
Hey guys how you doing, this story really is so sad, R.I.P to the two girls i hope they are resting well along with their families, maybe it was an accident, my thoughts are they went to take a swim and got into difficulty with the current, and probably no-one was around to hear their distress calls, i don't know just a suggestion, keep safe guys ❤❤❤
That is a possibility. and also there could have been harassment at work - at a time when unions were banned. My grandmother worked half a day and went to school for the other half - when she was twelve!! Ahh - the "good old days".

Jane did you go to sandy lane school and have a brother called kim.?
Sadly a lot of suicides leave families asking why....and answers never appear. I hope they are both at peace.
🙏💯

You're right.
It's often the case that this happens.
So sad 😢

Thank you
