  • Our flooded Maserati Granturismo that we bought at salvage auction blew up and caught on fire. Engine blows within just 50 miles of purchase :( Get NordVPN exclusive deal here: nordvpn.com/jrgarage Try it risk-free thanks to their money-back guarantee!
We have never had an engine blow up on us... Just cruising down the highway then BOOM! This was right after we purchased the car from salvage auction during hurricane Ida. We thought we got a crazy good deal on it, only paying $30,250, but now that is maybe not so good of a deal. What do you think caused the engine to blow up?

Don’t give up just yet. You can get a 4.7 Liter Maserati long block on EBay for $6000. Just swap out the accessories that you need and reinstall the engine. Back to cruising on Maserati time. Don’t do LS swap or a Tesla swap. Don’t be one of those guys. Good luck.

I love you guys and want you to be safe. Next time you’re waiting get all the way off the highway. If you wanna stay with the car, climb that embankment. You never know when a distracted, intoxicated, sleeping driver could veer off and you know what. It happens all the time. Sorry about the mazy. Major bummer. Stay safe boys.

Nothing wrong we’re buying a flood car but you have to pull the spark plugs out before you crank the engine. Every engine you guys have cranked in the past potentially could have the same issue. So in the future make sure you get all of the water out of the engine before you try to start it

There are multiple reasons for the engine blowing up, being a flood car, water on the fuel system, water in the oil especially if has a dry sump, the car was previously started with water inside the engine and it bent a rod.

Ive repaired alot of flooded cars here in the UK spanning the last 17 years. My guess would be that one of the con rods had a slight bend from the original hydro-locking of the engine, & gave up & snapped whilst on freeway. The bigger the engine & more cylinders the less you feel a bent rod when running. Ive had straight six 3.0ltr BMW diesels sound perfect with one bent rod at idle, the only way you could tell was that you had a harsh diesel growl under load momentarily.

check the freeze frame on the computer, see if there was an oil pressure spike. if there was then likely main passage got plugged and maybe blew up the oil filter.

This is such a rare situation. I've seen so many flooded cars run for 100's of thousands of miles after they were brought back to life. For this engine which is pretty much bulletproof means that the person who owned it prior or someone else, ran it with water inside the motor. The engine had to hydrolock and blew the pistons out. But to do this after the flush sounds SUS. Either way, it will be a mystery. Glad you guys are safe. That's pretty much all that matters.

I bet that the rod bearings started spinning in the connecting rod instead of on the crankshaft and that made a lot of heat on the crankshaft and then it shot out through the bottom end or side.

I'd bet you have no oil filter. It's been loose and worked it's way off and that's the noise you heard. The oil was then blown over the hot exhaust igniting and causing all that smoke. Just a thought. AP

the way to fix this = get a 1987 - 1989 BMW 635 csi and add a newish V12 with dash components, improved metal care, brakes, suspension, black leather interior and white paint. It could be many videos to find, buy, and build with the Alpina wheels and grayish paint. Your show is appreciated over here at the other side of our planet in Asia.

Do a VK56 swap. The Infiniti Q70 uses that engine and its quite quick despite the fact that it weighs about 4000lbs so its a whole ass boat. Maybe you could swap it in and do a few mods to it, then it could probably be faster than when it has the factory engine. I also heard its a pretty solid, reliable engine if I’m not mistaken.
