Two Asian American Men Sit Down and Talk About Their Heritage

I want to set the context for today’s episode. Ironically, we began season 2 with a guest who is not Hmong, but still Asian American (specifically, Taiwanese American). His name is Ming-Jinn Tong and he has known Yia for almost a decade. They met at a church they used to attend and have been best buds ever since.
The reason we brought on Ming-Jinn is that he’s an incredibly thoughtful speaker. He’s an expert on addressing cultural issues and we felt he would be the perfect person to bring on as Yia continues to reflect on his Hmong heritage.
Oh, don't know who Yia is?
Yia Vang is a chef based in Minneapolis, Minnesota who has pioneered Hmong food in the Midwest with his restaurant experience Union Hmong Kitchen, soon to be followed by his first brick and mortar location: Vinai.
Yia Vang grew up on a Thai refugee camp, and through the will and determination of his parents, his family successfully fled to the United States to create a better life. Growing up, Yia slowly gravitated towards food: cooking for friends and doing small pop-ups. Eventually, he embraced the art of cooking as a way to honor his parents and preserve his heritage.
