Awesome to see Dave's voice getting some much deserving praise! Love Depeche Mode. Phil Oakey from The Human League is another baritone with amazing range and tone.
One of the greatest bands of all time that inspired marilyn manson, rammstein, korn, placebo and of course recently ...ghost. also, the entire 'violator' album which this is from.. is about his connection with heroin.

Beth, .... don't you think that a lot of people do not need singing lessons? There are a lot of real good singers in the history of music that are just naturals? Most people from the 60's 70's 80's and 90's never had a vocal coach! The best singers are natural! And next time tell us more about posture, lung and belly singing! I used to sing in a grunge band while smoking and it didn't affect my sining! I did not have to open my mouth fully to sing really loud! Just the exit of my lungs and the backing of my belly was enough!
Very good analysis. I like how you were able to explain why DM's most tribal song was such a big hit; even though they were a dark synth band. I once heard Martin Gore say that the whole song was based on a shuffle rhythm, almost blueys.
For someone that is really into music but not formally trained, I always enjoy your explanations of things, like where the accent is placed. Very cool!
This is one of the songs that grabbed me when it came out, and will never let me go. I completely agree with you on the power of its simplicity, with the driving beat behind it.
You should listen to The Sisters of Mercy song Marian if you want to hear some deep vocals. Pete Steele from Type O Negative had quite a voice on him too

Love Depeche Mode. This is the vibe i feel like Billie Eilish has tapped into. Simple, nuanced, strong bass, poignant lyrics & exploring all aspects humanity. No need to show off, they have the it factor. And No one thought Dave Gahan should sound more like Phil Collins or Whitney Houston.
You should definitely follow up this reaction with a reaction to the official live video for "Should Be Higher" from their 2013/2014 tour! It's awesome. About 20 years later after this performance of "Personal Jesus" and Dave is an even better vocalist and performer.
Dave, greatest frontman and still alive. Please do Rush from the same tour/album. best song never played. And btw, Martin Gore is an awesome singer too, hint hint ;)
So glad you did Depeche Mode! I would love to see you analyze the other Depeche Mode singer, Martin Gore's voice, as his is quite different and much more versatile. Particularly one of his performances from the 80s or 90s.

@BethRoars, Dave OMG Gahan is called this way not only for his sex appeal ;-), it also has to do with his ability of using his chest voice most of the time while having fun onstage, and trasitioning from one octave to another without even trying to break a sweat. Being good-looking after all of that doesn't hurt, right? :-P
Other ideas for which artists to do: Abba (waterloo / mamma mia / dancing queen....), Beatles (strawberry fields or more of their later songs), and Kacey Musgraves (Rainbow)
How come you chose personal jesus, dave doesn't really show off how amazing his vocal strength is in this track. Condemnation, in your room, rush, higher love all show off his vocal skill better.

Best Personal Jesus version ever IMO. I will always love this band! I see you fangirling there Beth 😄 great reaction! Reach out & touch Dave!

Seen these guys 16 times, never get tired of a DM concert.. Proper epic live band..
You cant imagine what it was like to grow up with them🥰
I cant believe it's so long agooooo🥺
Love Depeche Mode.
This is the vibe i feel like Billie Eilish has tapped into. Simple, nuanced, strong bass, poignant lyrics & exploring all aspects humanity. No need to show off, they have the it factor. And No one thought Dave Gahan should sound more like Phil Collins or Whitney Houston.

Ahhh this is my favorite band. I'm so exited to watch this

"He was wild, he stole cars.. aaaaand we're just gonna stop there, k?"
Lmao :D
Depeche legend band and Dave your voice and style amazing!
You should definitely follow up this reaction with a reaction to the official live video for "Should Be Higher" from their 2013/2014 tour! It's awesome. About 20 years later after this performance of "Personal Jesus" and Dave is an even better vocalist and performer.
i wouldn't say he's better now... during sofad tour he was absolutely at his best. he couldn't beat that since then...
Curious to see what you'd think of Condemnation from this gig.
Dave, greatest frontman and still alive. Please do Rush from the same tour/album. best song never played. And btw, Martin Gore is an awesome singer too, hint hint ;)
dave has changed his singing style from the early days a lot listen to it when the track was launched it was really raw with more conviction

I think you totally nailed what's so great about the writing and performance. Very insightful. Nice one.
They are soooo good live. Really separates themselves from other bands.
So glad you did Depeche Mode! I would love to see you analyze the other Depeche Mode singer, Martin Gore's voice, as his is quite different and much more versatile. Particularly one of his performances from the 80s or 90s.

The song Home showcases Martin's beautiful vibrato.
Your videos are so helpful. I know that I love this song but your explanations help me understand why I love them so much!
"It's an anthem, a song for the audience". Yes, it is!
The performance of Dave Gahan singing In your room (same concert !) is absolutely amazing
Loved your reaction to this. One of the best songs from one of the best bands in the history of music. Thanks Beth!

Depeche Mode / Devotional tour 1993 / "In your Room" / in this moment / a broken DM ..................Best Song Ever !!!!
I've been to 7 Depeche Mode concerts. They are awesome live. My favorite band of all time
This was when Dave was in his prime.
He sounded pretty Damn intense in the Ultra album too. He's vocals in "Its no good" was off the charts.
This was the worst period of Dave's life.....that almost cost him his life.
@@greggscott4319 yes but he also sounded the best.
"You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrreal #ucking high on drugs."

I can't stress enough how much you need to listen to the Devotional performance of Condemnation. Dave's absolute best vocal performance, hands down!
Other ideas for which artists to do: Abba (waterloo / mamma mia / dancing queen....), Beatles (strawberry fields or more of their later songs), and Kacey Musgraves (Rainbow)
Oh they are so exciting to see live
Depeche Mode has been my fav band since I was 10 years old.......i'm 47 now.....
Best band ever. Live it's from another universe 🙌🙏
He still had a great voice on this tour even after all the heroin he did. His voice was almost shot during this tour from exhaustion/drugs.
You helped give me a new appreciation for this song and it's power in a concert.
for me is amazing D.Gahan& The Soulsavers👌🎩
He was super high at the time!🤣🤣🤣love your reaction...please hear them again!
You should definitely keep reacting to live performances of Depeche Mode, his voice and energy on stage is impressive
That was in his drug phase in 1993. Since 1997 Dave works with a vocal coach. Perhaps one could make a comparison with this and a version after 1997.
Thanks God he got away from heroin...otherwise he'd probably not still be around and we'd have missed out on a lot of great music.
True. He just hired a vocal coach because he lost a whole octave of vocal range to heroin. He had to relearn to compensate it.
How come you chose personal jesus, dave doesn't really show off how amazing his vocal strength is in this track. Condemnation, in your room, rush, higher love all show off his vocal skill better.
totally agree
couldn't agree with you more. i don't get that choice, i really don't. i don't think she really cares about dave's voice, just wanted to choose a song that everyone knows so she would get more views, i don't know. but defo the worst choice she could make. dave doesn't sing in this song.
I would love to hear your analysis of Les Claypool's vocals on "Tommy the Cat" by Primus.
Dave gahan , the best showman in the World and the best voice .
5:19 I only found out yesterday that Dave Gahan had a troubled adolescence.
Beth - I think you should review some of the songs of your compatriots The Associates.
Try Club Country or Party Fears Two.
Loved this. No one reacts to DM like this. I'd love to see you react to Depeche Mode's studio sessions of "Come Back" and "Broken". Very pure voiced. "Broken" especially highlights Gahan's baritone voice. Both are fantastic in my opinion and I'd love to hear your views as a vocal coach.
The best band EVER!!!

6:35 the effect is done by reversing the start of the first word, adding an echo and then reverting all back to normal
When u're at they'r concert u don't want it to end, that's what i felt,si 2 weeks later i went from Paris concert to Berlin because it's such an atmosphere, and another few awesome songs are 'walking in my shoes' or 'In your room' form SOFAD album(one of the best )
35 years of loving them and going strong.
Baritones are EVERYTHINGGGGG I fricking love them so much, my Holy Grail of baritones is of course, Peter Steele

Devotional tour 🖤😭❤️❤️❤️
Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands, so happy Dave survived alcohol and heroin addiction. I enjoy The Cure too, a similar band IMO.
I'll just keep waiting until you analyse "In your room" (of this same gig), please (?) ♡.♡
