Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence etc...when these songs came out we use to go to the clubs and when one of their songs came on...usually the extended dance version, you had to find a girl fast to get on the dance floor before it filled up completely. Depeche Mode, New Order and The Cure were all in their prime when I was in college. Those were the days.

Depeche Mode became huge in gay dance clubs. They, Pet Shop Boys, Fine Young Cannibals, Bronski Beat, New Order were absolute staples in those clubs. This was at a time when most North American "white" bars with a dance floor were still trying to get people to dance to 70s classic rock which as a rule is undanceable. There was nothing exclusionary there. Straight couples went all the time, and it was easier to actually ask a girl to dance since there was ZERO chance that anyone would tolerate a coercive situation. Those were the safest clubs for women by far. It was like having dozens of watchful brothers.
