Dodging stage divers and crowd surfers was an extra part of the experience. Or that unexpected moment when some random people pick you up in the crowd and next minute you’re crowd surfing. That happened to me at a Grinspoon gig and it was awesome.
I find it kind of strange how many people lose their accents while singing, like the Beatles which is one example of many, not that it's a bad thing per se, but I agree with you I love hearing her real voice come through the singing
I always found her voice strangely soothing when I was in high school, going home on the school bus listening to their bus radio after a rough day or even a good day. This band helped get me through high school, and it's only now I'm realizing I should've given them more credit for that.
The voices and songs of Delores O'Rirordan and Enya (and a few by Sinead O'Connor) helped me cope with the stresses of combat. I served for more than 60 months (5 years) in combat, during 4 deployments. This song is credited by many Irish and Brits for helping to stop the guerrilla terrorist war between the Catholics and the Protestants in Northern Ireland. All were holding grudges about their relatives being murdered by both factions. As The Cranberries explain, it all started more than 100 years ago. It was overdue that both sides forgave each other and moved on from the violence and murder. Love the Cranberries!

A few to consider: Natalie Merchant: 'This House is on Fire' (live in Germany 2002) or 'Noah's Dove' (10000 Maniacs, MTV Unplugged 1993). Interesting how her voice changed in those 9 years. Paul Rodgers: (with Free, 'Be My Friend' live on Beat Club, Germany 1970) or 'Bad Company (recent live videos, nearly 50 years later!). Interesting to compare how his voice has held up, but also changed. Rhiannon Giddens: 'At The Purchaser's Option' (live) Sandy Denny :(with Fotheringay 'Nothing More', Beat Club, Germany 1970) Heather Nova: 'Island' (eg live at Lorely, Germany 1996) Levellers: 'Maid of the River' (live in Blackpool 1996)
I just loved how well she mixes a very traditional Irish sound into rock singing- and it’s the traditional Irish singing that gives her those head flips- the “yodels”
Thank you for your reactions on this song. The Cranberries as you know it was one of the most popular bands of the '90s. Dolores' talent was so incredible. She left us much too soon.
How in the hell is it fair that all those 80's guys did mountains of drugs and are still kickin', while grunge/alt rock artists of the 90's are an endangered species?
I think a bit of luck i mean many of them did "die" but got revived. Also I remember Keith richards mention that he and his buddies got prescription drugs. So pure medical grade stuff they knew the doses of. Lots of guys getting the street hookups die cuz of the crappy quality of drugs. Also it appears that a lot of rap "singers" keep doing shit crap drugs even when they are rich. I mean instead of cocaine like the big rock stars, they chug cough syrup and 7 up and or do crack etc
I miss her and her band. They were so amazing. They were so tight and deadly accurate with their performances. The music and mix was exact every time I had the lucky opportunity to see then live and this performance is a great example of their skill. Her passion was so fierce. I truly miss them.
Watching this the day that it's announced that Marie Fredriksson (half of Roxette) has passed. Really emotional stuff. Perhaps one of their songs next?
That is such a tight set for a live recording. I thought it was a music video until the title said it was live. Very rare to hear something played and sang so well on stage. This song has also changed meanings for me after having a child. Beautiful
If you are not able to recognize that The Cranberries have been an enormously talented band, you are making it clear how little idea of music you have
Blessed to have seen The Cranberries live three times...the loss of Dolores and that voice...sadness. She was a mother and a superb vocalist. Her singing this song acoustically-divine.
I really really love listening to Dolores O'Riordan singing. I was so sad when she passed. I never got to see the Cranberries live but at least we have all of those wonderful recordings. RIP Ma'am!
I love this band, I always like its sound style, it seemed special for the decade in which it was developed, the control of its voice and if my skin always bristled, I suggest listening to Nino Bravo with the song "Libre" thank you very much!! 👌
I was kind of old school technologically, at the time, but when this came out, they appeared on Saturday Night Live. The TV I owned had an auxiliary set up and my stereo had an auxiliary set up, so I connected the two with patch chords. When they performed Zombie, I was able to record the SNL performance onto cassette tape. I had that for quite awhile. I bet not too many people had a cassette recording of that live performance. She just died way too young, and this was, definitely one of the most unique songs in rock. I don’t know if it can ever be recreated. That vocal technique is not completely unique, but it is hard to do, and she mastered it. I knew there was some reason that her death is extra memorable to me, and researching, I saw that she died the day before my birthday. I wish she wasn’t gone, but, that day of her death is an important day in the US. It is the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She picked a day that millions will remember. Just another reason to remember a talented singer.
I randomly found this vid in my RUclips recommended, and I was actually compelled to watch it, unlike most of what RUclips recommends. I finally figured out the yodel (with my male vocal chords) after struggling for years to figure out this song. It was your analysis of it as typical metal scream. Zoh-um-bae (sharp inhale) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.) She's basically hyperventilating back and forth to make the Irish yodel mid lyric. A half-note of a metal scream, if you prefer. Thank you so much for accidentally teaching me something I've been dying to learn. The algorithm did some good work today.
I'm American, but my paternal grandparents were from County Kilkenny. I remember many years ago seeing the film The Untouchables with Sean Connery. They kept calling him "that Irish cop" and I'm thinking that's not an Irish accent. Apparently Sean does one accent, Scottish.
She is "Keening" the action of wailing in grief for a dead person, a very old Irish tradition. She is not yodelling. RIP Dolores you were and remain a national treasure.
Dolores voice certainly was unique. Sometimes she sounds off key and out of tune but it’s as if that’s how it supposed to sound. One of the best bands ever
Dear Beth, I've been watching several reactions and today I'm reacting for the first time. Different artists seen by your reaction and it has been pleasent to see and listen to them. Dolores is a favorite of mine. Still today her voice is still moving me. Get on with the moving experiences of your reactions. Regards, Sandor
Yeah, no. That's completely incorrect. Most likely they would be an indie rock band, since major labels don't normally sign bands with this type of music these days. On top of that, indie rock bands aren't typically known for using autotune. Autotune is something used by pop and hip hop music, which this is very clearly not so your comment makes no sense anyway. Not trying to be a dick but I am so sick of misinformed, musically illiterate nostalgia-baiting comments like this one popping up on every RUclips video for every single song that came out before 2004. Cool, you like older music better than newer music. Doesn't mean everything today is "autotuned", that is so fucking ignorant and insulting to every current artist making actual good music right now.
@@joematthews6063 I could go on to list several people who are using auto-tune in the rock/metal side of things as well. Auto-tune is actually very pervasive, it doesn't have to be the "auto-tune the whole thing" line you see in pop/hip hop but you don't get to hear the small imperfections in singers voices that make them human in almost anything done today. I would love to spend more time on this topic but it's nearly 5 am and I have to get some rest for several videos today I need to shoot.
In general it is band itself who decide would they Autotune the song, they would have the option to do it but it would not been mandatory. There are lots of people who use it but it is their choice. I personally think that Dolores would never agree on something like that. But what I am convinced in is that they would have lots of problems making the video for official version of the song now released. It would be "too problematic"....
The thing she do when she sings is built around a yodel style you find in their local folk music. She tweaked after mastered it and made it a The Cranberries trademark. Many have tired to cover her and tried to get that style but I think all have failed. Her voice, techniuqe are pretty unigue,
I loved this video, I've been fascinated with the way Dolores sang and have been trying to perfect a little bit of her yodle in my vocal style. So sad, RIP Dolores, a true artist gone too soon. I cried when I heard she had crossed over. The album In The End released after Dolores's death has helped me through one of the toughest times in my life.

Paul Rodgers: (with Free, 'Be My Friend' live on Beat Club, Germany 1970) or 'Bad Company (recent live videos, nearly 50 years later!). Interesting to compare how his voice has held up, but also changed.
Rhiannon Giddens: 'At The Purchaser's Option' (live)
Sandy Denny :(with Fotheringay 'Nothing More', Beat Club, Germany 1970)
Heather Nova: 'Island' (eg live at Lorely, Germany 1996)
Levellers: 'Maid of the River' (live in Blackpool 1996)
I must have seen them ten times back in the 90s. Every single one was great, thanks and RIP Dolores.
Bittersweet watching Dolores in her prime. What a powerful person, so sad she is gone.
I just loved how well she mixes a very traditional Irish sound into rock singing- and it’s the traditional Irish singing that gives her those head flips- the “yodels”
I suggest that Dolores' singing embellishments were actually derived from traditional Irish keening rather than yodelling.
thats well known
I don't think she meant literal yodelling.
@Mal McKee lilting
@Mal McKee
I kinda heard late but yes, very sad :I
Thank you
Thank you for your reactions on this song.
80's guys did cocaine and had fun, 90's guys did heroin and had depression
@@TarkasBane agree, heroin was rampant in 90's and destroyed the grunge/alt artist
I miss her and her band. They were so amazing. They were so tight and deadly accurate with their performances. The music and mix was exact every time I had the lucky opportunity to see then live and this performance is a great example of their skill. Her passion was so fierce. I truly miss them.
I'm french
I was at this concert paris bercy
It was fabulous i remember this concert all my life
Dolores 😍😍😍😍😍
One of the greatest voices of the 90's. Thanks for that
Watching this the day that it's announced that Marie Fredriksson (half of Roxette) has passed. Really emotional stuff. Perhaps one of their songs next?
Hey! You can find my reaction to Roxette here: ruclips.net/video/0REBeNUpPIg/видео.html
That is such a tight set for a live recording. I thought it was a music video until the title said it was live. Very rare to hear something played and sang so well on stage. This song has also changed meanings for me after having a child. Beautiful
It's not rare. There are several bands who are even better live than recorded.
My Daughter name is Dolores because of her.
R.I.P Dolores :/
is a spanish woman name, and a spanish word for pain.
Thanks Beth for not hidden your feelings. This Singer and this song expresses a lot of our desires.
Greetings from Brasil !!!
A lot of people seem to lose their accent, while singing. Her accent seemed to resonate in her lyrics. Highly talented.
Love this lady. Such a genuine person. Nice to see.
I always though her voice was amazing yet haunting at the same time. She was such a talented singer.
What a gift. To take ugly things - banging, monotonous bass, dissonant lead, shredded and screamed vocals - and to create beauty from that! Genius.
If you are not able to recognize that The Cranberries have been an enormously talented band, you are making it clear how little idea of music you have
I could tell at the end you were tearing up.. like everyone who has ever heard this song..
She is TRUE talent! Sing, Write, and play and instrument! I wished I could have seen her in concert!
Yes! Finally some Cranberries.
Thank you!
Very insightful commentary. I just stumbled on this, but this is a gem of a video- thank you!
I've seen The Cranberries two times in Milan in 90'... they were amazing, really amazing!
Blessed to have seen The Cranberries live three times...the loss of Dolores and that voice...sadness.
She was a mother and a superb vocalist. Her singing this song acoustically-divine.
She was a good-hearted woman. Despite what she experienced, she tried to make a positive difference with this song. History will judge her kindly.
Nah.
Hey! Here is my reaction to Nino Bravo: ruclips.net/video/IPhhFdB3wMc/видео.html
Her voice is so clear & pure. I find it simultaneously strong and fragile. Such rare qualities. I miss her so. R.I.P.
Quite possibly the most powerful song of the 20th Century.
I really wish i could have seen her live
I randomly found this vid in my RUclips recommended, and I was actually compelled to watch it, unlike most of what RUclips recommends.
I finally figured out the yodel (with my male vocal chords) after struggling for years to figure out this song. It was your analysis of it as typical metal scream.
Zoh-um-bae (sharp inhale) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.)
She's basically hyperventilating back and forth to make the Irish yodel mid lyric. A half-note of a metal scream, if you prefer.
Thank you so much for accidentally teaching me something I've been dying to learn. The algorithm did some good work today.
It's almost too much. First to hear your beautiful Scottish accent, then to hear Dolores' Irish accent....This Yank approves.
I'm impressed that you can discern the difference. No sarcasm.
@@MTW3095 You only need functional hearing.
You would think so, wouldn't you?
@@MTW3095 A thick Scottish accent and a thick Irish accent are very easy to discern, although I personally wasn't quite sure what Beth's was.
I'm American, but my paternal grandparents were from County Kilkenny. I remember many years ago seeing the film The Untouchables with Sean Connery. They kept calling him "that Irish cop" and I'm thinking that's not an Irish accent. Apparently Sean does one accent, Scottish.
Your one step ahead of me Beth! Hearing her accent is the first thing came to my mind! RIP DOLORES 🙏🙏🙏
Beth considering another songs of the cranberries like "Linger ", "Promises" from this same concert 💚💚💚
She is "Keening" the action of wailing in grief for a dead person, a very old Irish tradition. She is not yodelling. RIP Dolores you were and remain a national treasure.
Her use of Keening in this song was perfect for the very sad subject of the song, rest in peace Delores O'Rirodan your voice wnd talent were amazing.
What a flawless performance. Not only the singing but the music too
RIP Dolores
I'll remember you ever 😔
She was such a great singer never seen this video before but seeing her play that Gibson ES 335 that is totally Bitchin
My favorite of theirs is Dreams. I sing it to my girlfriend all the time, it's such a beautiful song.
Cringe.. 😂
One of the all time greatest singers and one of the best songs!
Dolores voice certainly was unique. Sometimes she sounds off key and out of tune but it’s as if that’s how it supposed to sound. One of the best bands ever
She’s singing in a minor key. It sounds more somber, and a little “off”.
I heard this song... I cry....
Thank you, Beth !!
Without Beth, RUclips would be a boring place.
Dear Beth,
I've been watching several reactions and today I'm reacting for the first time. Different artists seen by your reaction and it has been pleasent to see and listen to them.
Dolores is a favorite of mine. Still today her voice is still moving me.
Get on with the moving experiences of your reactions.
Regards,
Sandor
If the Cranberries had become popular in 2019, the studio would have Autotuned all the awesome right out of Dolores.
This post made me quite sad cuz it’s the truth. Great (and sad) observation.
So glad I got to see them live. She is an amazing person and we were lucky to have her.
The thing she do when she sings is built around a yodel style you find in their local folk music. She tweaked after mastered it and made it a The Cranberries trademark.
Many have tired to cover her and tried to get that style but I think all have failed. Her voice, techniuqe are pretty unigue,
i'm watching this now and crying.. miss her so much!
I miss her voice, politically and musically. R.I.P. Dolores.
Dolores fue increíble cantante irlandesa!!! Limerick debe estar orgulloso de haber visto nacer a una estrella que se adelantó a su tiempo. Gracias por la reacción Beth 😍😘😎🤘
I am Irish and absolute feel so proud. So much pride and I still love you too Beth.
React to Portishead next!
Absolutely love her! One of the most interesting singers I've heard.
Her accent is amazing. Beth, have you thought of doing any Tori Amos? There's a live version of Iieee from 1998 that always blows my mind.
She's done a few Tori songs I think. At least one anyway. Beth is a fan
@@AmateurSurgeonThe3rd I did a search and hadn't seen anything. Hmm.
Hey! Here is my reaction to Tori: ruclips.net/video/ilhjwSxWrzY/видео.html
One of my favorite vocalists ever. I just felt like she connected with me in a raw, visceral sense. So sad she's gone.
Yeq crazy how she was going to collab with bad wolves for their cover and on her way to record when she hqd her untimely accident.
Thank you so much for doing this, they've always been my favourite band. I miss Dolores so damn much. Please react to more of their songs, things like these make me so happy.
