Oh my gosh. When I discovered this band back in the 90's I fell so hard for them. She was/is a treasure. I was wrecked beyond words when she passed. I never saw them perform live...that makes me sad. I've got all their recordings and live performances...I sometimes binge on them. What a wonderful singer and group. I'm glad their music lives on eternal. I get so emotional when I think of her...
I love that She lets her Limerick accent come through in her vocals. There are so many bands from the U.K. and Ireland where the singer sounds like they’re from the U.S.
Americans mostly don’t sound American either. It’s the mechanism of singing. Because the US produces so much music people think everyone is copying their “accent” but it’s just how singing makes you sound. Very few people retain their speaking accent when singing. Even country singers from the Deep South are putting that twang on when they’re singing.
@@Dreyno well the america accent. Usually we think of the the southwest American accent. Which largely over time has been taking over most of America in terms of accents. As within the 2010s I moved to Texas and realized most people in Texas do not have a southern accent. I digress, my point being that the southwest accent (what I have) is very flat and in regards to other accents especially European ones. Most European accents, including Australia, have a lot of rounding of the syllables and a lot of inflections. It's hard to describe through text, but that's why when singing most people seem like they are using an American accent because of how singing reinforces you using less inflections to stay in key with the music.
@@CommanderCodyChipless The vast majority of popular music, be that pop, rock, indie, metal etc. produced outside of North America is from the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Sweden. There are plenty of flat accents within those territories. The problem is that most Americans think that unless you sound expressly “foreign” you are copying their accent. And lots of people in those other countries who also think you should sound distinctly like where you’re from. It’s not how singing works. People almost never identify where a band are from without Googling it.
She was such a driven outstanding soul, very very close in age to my little wife and mother of my 3. They both passed so very close together as well. Way to young for sure. The pain never stops, but I do find a bit of peace listening to this song
Dear Beth, I really like your educational work. You teach me how Irish culture and especially its music work. That means a lot to me. You know, I am a 59-year-old German guy who loves Irish culture and, of course, the music. I find your explanations about singing and the techniques Dolores uses very exciting, and it makes me happy to dive so deeply into her music, thanks to you. Thank you for that.
Here in South Africa in the 90s we had a radio DJ (Barney Simon) who played alternative music. T was so beautiful to hear this song and Dolores's angelic voice sandwiched between the Crash Test Dummies and Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc.
Lovely song. Dolores and Marie from Roxette are the two female voices from the time I was young that went silent too early. As always, thanks for your in depth explanations. Besides my interest in Rock and Pop, I was always a fan of Irish and Scottish Folk, so there is a lot here that I can relate to but never recognized as such. Greetings from Germany ❤
I try to stay away from hyperbole, but this is perhaps the most beautiful song ever to me. The musicianship is sublime and Dolores' voice is ethereal, but also part of it is because it takes me back in time to my joyous university days in the mid 1990's. I got the see The Cranberries live years later at First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, standing right next to the stage, and I touched Dolores' hand. (pausing with eyes closed before resuming typing) When I heard the news of her death as I drove in the beautiful Olympic Peninsula of Washington State , I had to pull over my car and sit safely until I processed it. profound beauty and sadness blurred for those moments.
I am here because I am compelled to be here. When she first became big with songs like Zombie she brought her heritage with her to the spotlight. She also had an important story to tell. You could say that storytelling was how music was born and so she carries on a timeless tradition. It makes me have a reverence for Irish culture. I have held these feelings since first hearing her, until now. She made her nation proud. Also, thank you for adding your own explanations in your video.
Beth, I'm so glad you can analyze her singing. When I hear this song it breaks me . Her and my late little pixie wife were very close in age and both passed within days apart.
I've struggled with anxiety and depression all my life and I feel that in Dolores' songs. It's so sad what happened to her. I believe she was living in my country, Canada, at the time. Without really knowing it, her music and the music of many women in the 90s (most of them Canadian like Alanis Morissette, soul singer Amanda Marshall, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviatzuk and others), many of them singing in an almost Celtic style, were the soundtrack of my teenage years. I'm sure this song played many times on my radio as I was driving with a buddy to pick up our girlfriends on rainy Friday nights (I live in British Columbia) after school. 90s female voices are so nostalgic for me. They owned Canadian radio back then, and I'm not just talking about pop singers.
Thank you for the on going, continued education you provide on your channel, Beth. It is greatly appreciated. Delores was truly an angelic Irish voice that just squeezes the heart when you hear Her….endless emotion through a small, quit and shy soul. So very beautiful. Thanks again, and continued success to you!
Her band was just perfect fit for her. While playing very competently, they allowed her to perform the song with all of the softness and then a bit more out front, without stepping on her. As a former sax player in a working rock band, I know how some groups just all want to be at the front all the time. Very unselfish group. So sad that we lost her way too early. Just imagine the music we missed.
I've been waiting so long for you to cover this song. Dolores was so so unique and special to me, Just as my late little pixie wife was. They both were born in 1971 and I lost them both in 2018, way to young. Thank you Beth.
Such a brilliant video - so well dissected with great analysis of what Dolores was doing and how she sings it A great song. A really good band and Dolores had such a lush voice Beth you’re great and this was another treat to watch. Love your content!
I don’t usually like detailed analysis of vocal styles, but this is an exception. You did a wonderful breakdown of such an iconic performer. There is only one Delores, thank you for helping me understand better her brilliance
Besides the awesome voice, there's another thing that hits a point in this song that if you hear anywhere you'll always think about the song. The bass lines, they are so simples but they fit perfect and is very recognisable.
I've loved her music for 30-some years now. Despite it's limited popularity in the deep south usa. Your remarks on Dolores' vocal abilities are spot-on. she did so much with her vocals and accent that I can never visit Ireland. for every woman with an irish accent would have me wrapped around her finger
I've always loved the Cranberries. I always listen to Dolores O'Riodan with tears in my eyes...like Whitney...like Sinead...song shapers, unique/beautiful voices...all gone way too soon....but...they left such great music...😊❤
There's a video of them performing this in 1991...two years before their first album. Find it if you can. Dolores looks nervous as heck and almost like someone just on stage doing some karaoke. Always loved Dolores' songs.
[I'm From Brazil - bad English alert]... I love this song, the first time I heard it was when I was watching the movie "Click" by Adam Sandler. When my girlfriend broke up with me I listened to this song on loop and cried ; -; ... hahaha
Keening comes from the Irish word for crying, 'caoineadh'. In the 7th century wealthy families used to employ people (ladies) to cry at the funerals of their loved ones. People crying uncontrolably at funerals was a sign of how much the deceased was loved
... Ah Dolores ... I feel so vain and useless since your death ... Beautifulll Dolores, heavenly voice, always in my heart, RIP little girl ... (sorry if bad writting -> I am french and old) .

Hey Beth, are you aware of Dolores's performance of (Fleetwood Mac's) "Go Your Own Way" in a French radio station ? The power of hervocals is astounding. I think you would enjoy it, she's accompanied by two guys playing acoustic guitars. Thanks, i love The Cranberries.
Very very close in age as my late wife, they both passed very very close in time. 2 sweet souls taken from my life is too much. I just turned 56 but feel like I've lived for 100 years. Maybe the lord will take me from this pain and hurt soon.

Its just because the accent is too impractical for singing.

Very nicely done, Beth! Exactly what I needed to hear right now.
This may be my favorite reaction video ever. I grew up listening, having a crush, and my heart breaking to Delores.
Ode to My Family, I Can't be With You, When You're Gone, Just my Imagination, Animal Instinct and Promises are all great choices.
Dolores is sadly missed. The most emotive singer in my life time...the band is amazing...still listen often to this day.

Amazing analysis Beth. Many memories of this song as I was growing up.
these "crackles" in Dolores way of singing are so cute!

Beth you’re great and this was another treat to watch. Love your content!
I'm here for all the nostalgia❤. Love this song so, thank you for providing your insight and a bit of history about the song and Irish/Celtic music.
Amazing voice. Can imagine modern producers would run it with pitch correction/auto-tune if this was released today.
Ahhh Delores was such a gift and will always be missed 🖤
One of my biggest regrets is to live in Ireland and had missed her last gig in Dublin before she died. The Cranberries is one of my favourite bands
So great. Never noticed those features the dozens of times I've heard it. The most played Irish singer's song ever?
Love the riffs and orchestration too 💗✨
