I was somewhere in that crowd, and at the time it was well known that Thom had come to hate performing Creep, so it was a fantastic surprise that it wasn't just performed, but performed masterfully and with full commitment. And even in a crowd of tens of thousands, the performance made it feel intimate and personal.

That song and his voice always... ALWAYS stabs me right in the heart. I know that pain all too well.
"I'm a weirdo. What the Hell am I doing here? I don't belong here."
The desperate longing in his voice. Wanting something, someone that You feel is so far above you.
To sing that song light and bright would ruin it. He nails it, you can hear the pain, feel his frustration and isolation... And it hurts. And if it doesn't hurt you, then you just can't feel or lived a perfectly blessed life and are probably that person from the "In Crowd" that caused that longing and pain in people like Tom, myself and so many others. *(slow blinks)* I am gonna go huddle in the corner of my bed, hug my Plushie bat and play my playlist with this song on it.

Beth, how much of his performance choices do you think were influenced by the fact that the band soured on this tune almost immediately, but still had to perform it as it was the big single early on? "Anti -performance" seems to have been a big thing in the early 90s. Love the work you do!

I've noticed quite a few people make the comments about his mouth movements, Thom does the mouth movements to stretch his jaw, as you'll notice he needs to do to sing the lyrics Run, Run near the end of the song also He has been described by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest and most influential singers of his generation!!!

Given how many drugs he was on, and how much he hates this song, it's actually pretty impressive

The band mostly hates _the way the audience moronically chants every damn word._
If the audience of way too happy girls would let the band focus on the song the performance would be more real for them, not a stupid predictable exercise.

I heard him say in an interview that he just basically turned into an alcoholic before he eventually stopped, but never became an druggie. Also not sure he/they hate the song, I think they just hated the way it became their anthem and the crowd that came just for that song. A bit like Nirvana/Teen Spirit.

Hey Beth thanks for reacting to this, it’s one of my favorite songs! I would recommend you react to “Gurenge” by LiSa-The first take! Keep up the great work and stay safe Beth :)
