Blues was always dark. This is more like blues meets metalcore,but yeah very fresh and cool.

paytontech Yes, but modern extreme metal has almost completely shed its blues roots. I mean, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but the only blues elements remaining in most black metal seem to be the basic instrumentation (electric guitar/bass/drum kit) and focus on 4/4 time, which are in no way unique to blues to begin with.

@@gracelikescircles1498 I think it's black metal mixed with black music, in general, including Gospel, soul, blues, R&B. This music is what old Southern Negro spirituals would've sounded like, if the converted slaves had identified with Satan instead of Christ.
Why does this work so damn well?
My answer... If you look at the history of blues, alot of the originators were said to have sold their soul to the devil for talent and fame. Fast forward to the beginnings of hard rock and metal, which was Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath whom pretty much used blues riffs. Mix the 2 together with bluesy vocals and tou have this. Its absolute genius. Cant believe it hasnt been done like this before.
because he's a very good musician and not an idiot who just learned to play 3 chords, scream and "look evil" and then went to the studio to make an album.

Zeal & Ardor's approach draws on an alternate history and stems from two thoughts: Christianity was imposed upon American slaves, just as it was imposed in Norway, and black metal in the 90's grew as a rebellion to monotheism. What would have happened if American slaves had rebelled in the same way? Or put bluntly: What would satanic spirituals sound like?
