This song is Grammy worthy. I am a critical ahole of music, a snob...I can say this is the band we needed this decade. We needed this band in our lives. Thank you. This song deserves airplay..airtime. That is how good this song is.
The Lyrics are to deep for Radio Stations so we have to listen to it at RUclips Spotify or other streaming Services ☺️ but its true one of the greatest Songs ever written!
"Like a strange fruit, that's out of season," is most likely a nod to Billie Holiday's song, "Strange Fruit," which is a song about the proliferation of hangings of black men and women in the South.
@@Sombre_gd The band started off as an experiment mixing two seemingly opposite styles of music together - specifically black metal and African American spiritual music - so they're obviously doing it right if you got that!
Built on Ashes has been one of my favorite songs for the past year. I found Zeal & Ardor while having a streaming metal station playing. It was one of their more soulful songs and not so much black metal infused. It really wasn’t what I was looking for but the singer had a good voice. I listened to more songs with soul and black metal mixed and liked it. I like a lot of the old black metal but a lot of the newer stuff past the mid 90’s is mixed with another genre anyway (inspired by classical, electronic, rock, even bluegrass) so it didn’t take long to appreciate this as well.
This music is in communion with my soul and in this hour I sit alone with my thoughts I ponder, the blades of my past get closer to the vines. Sorrow is pushed only by the winds of misery. But a moment's notice, I see my reflection in these waters we travel. I move. I move in this colorful abyss. I move to this promised land I've felt inside the deepest chapters I've lived. The hollowness I feel is room for the things I wish to bring. So a giants step is a stars dance on this road of many crossroads.
When you've got real ears and explore, without limit and preconception, when you play with codes without ever being ridiculous, to finally built an inspired, smart, honnest music, mixing so skilfully different styles that rarely (never?) met before. A real openminded work of composing, where beautiful choices, arrangements, a constant attention to the harmonic and groovy aspect reveal such an original identity. Their approach a little reminds me that of Primus, Skindred too, there is obviously others, and more recently Polyphia, who has their way, released out a 3rd album too of an astonishing maturity et opening. Last album's really amazing Fu****g beautiful discover for me tonight. Shame on me to discover this only now Sorry for (I guess...) my bad english A french fan of Tool, Meshuggah, Neurosis, Igorrr et so many different ones
The lyrics here are kinda... depressing when interpreted literally, ngl. However, conceptually, it ties in well with other Z&A music and gets me excited for the new album.
realelliotth I think it being depressing is part of the overall image. It juxtaposes the Gospel tone his songs have. The contrast has an intense and immersive feel.
It's only depressing if you hold onto the idea of life. To me, the lyrics "you were bound to die alone" is comforting. It says to me that its ok, no matter what I do, good or bad, I came into this world alone, and I will leave it alone. That is a fact that cannot be avoided or denied, and for me, that fact is liberating. It is all as it should be.
And here we go, my absolute favorite track. I'm pleasantly impressed with how you guys have melded the postrock/deathmetal elements of a lot of my favorite groups with a clean vocal style and some sincere subject matter. This is by far my favorite track of 2018. Thank you, ZandA
Don't know how I came across this song, think it was recommended over a year ago and have enjoyed listening to it since. Great song guys! Shout out from Australia!!! 👍 ✌
"You are bound to die alone" can either be a weight which keeps you down, or that which liberates you, depending on how you look at it. The choice is yours.
I believe this is a song about racism. It's a modernized and edgier version of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", a protest song written to denounce the hangings of black people in the South of the USA in the early to mid 20th century. The first lines of the song are basically identical. "Bound to die alone" is, like, literally bound, as in tied to a rope. Not just bound metaphorically. Seems to be sang from the perspective of two fleeing slaves who have already accepted that the white man will hunt them down. I believe that's what the marching sounds in the background are supposed to represent. The lyrics are an attempt of one of them at comforting their friend before their inevitable fate, but without lying.
already know that every song from this upcoming album will be brilliant to me "Devil is Fine" is incredible Love both Z&A and Birdmask love the way he mixes different types of music and also love his vocal range
"They comin closer just to kill us No they ain't never gonna help us. They comin closer just to kill us No they never gon' help us." It sucks that these lyrics are still as pertinent, even moreso, in 2020.
The soulful lyrics closely resemble a Billie Holiday song. Called Strange Fruit, which is one hell of a homage: Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
I... I love you, ComaLi...*reads someone else's earlier entry*AH! AHHWW! AWW, C'MONN! Dammit, they beat me to it! *kicks rocks and walks the lonely walk down the road to the ending theme from the '70s Incredible Hulk*
You hear that? That's called soul, something lacking in most music. Luckily, there is still a lot of bands with it but Zeal And Ardor stand out. Have a feel this will be better than "Devil Is Fine". Hype!
Like a strange fruit, that's out of season
Oho-oho-ohhh
You are bound to die alone
You will swing free on the breeze then
Oho-oho-ohhh
You are bound to die alone
(You are bound to die alone)
At the end of the day, you went for lights out
Oho-oho-ohhh
You are bound to die alone
Oho-oho-ohhh
At the end of it all there is no doubt
Oho-oho-ohhh
That you are bound to die alone
(We are bound to die alone)
Don't darling die on me now
(Don't darling die on me now)
We'll dig a grave close to your home
(We'll dig a grave close to your home)
Don't you fix your eyes on me now
(Don't you fix your eyes on me now)
We never said you'd come back home
(We never said you'd come back home)
They're coming closer to kill us
Don't cry, don't cry on me now
No they ain't ever goin' to help us
Close to his grave, we'll build our home
They're coming closer just to kill us
Don't you fix your eyes on me now
You know they never goin' help us
We never said you'd come back home
End of the way when the thieves tell
Oho-oho-ohhh
You are bound to die alone
Oho-oho-ohhh
At the end of it all when the fields burn
Oho-oho-ohhh
You are bound to die alone
(We are bound to die alone)
Oho-oho-ohhh
Don't darling die on me now
We'll dig a grave close to your home
Don't you fix your eyes
Don't you fix your eyes on me now
We never said you'd come back home
(We never said you'd come back home)
Don't darling die on me now
(Don't darling die on me now)
We'll dig a grave close to your home
(We'll dig a grave close to your home)
Don't you fix your eyes on me now
(Don't you fix your eyes on me now)
We never said you'd come back home
(We never said you'd come back home)
MVP again
This song has so much soul it's so fucking brutal and beautiful.
True story bro.

Considering that the album itself is titled "Stranger Fruit," I think your idea has some merit.
"Like a strange fruit out of season... you are bound to die alone." Godamn genius
In a better world, this is the type of song that get's 10 million views in 3 days for it's music video and a Grammy nomination for song of the year.
Then it’d be too popular and people would be hatin.
Amen bro!
In a better world we'd know, right off the bat, this is anti-Christian, pro love, known love in an exile, hope past death, belief beyond religion.
It sounds for me as a burzum cover made by soul musicians.

I found them on a gojira station on Spotify, as soon as I heard them, I dove in and had to listen to everything
This is easily my favorite track off this album. It moves me like few songs ever have. Powerful, powerful stuff.
Damn this song sums up 2020 pretty well.
At the end of it all, when the fields burn.
the guitar sound at the start of the song sounds like Hans Zimmer's Time from Inception. Amazing.
funnily enough, i ended up having the first kiss with the love of my life to this song.
this brings back so many good (now painful) memories.

Been here since they released Devil is fine, it worms my heart seeing them grow even more.
I've been listening to this for almost three days straight. It's so addicting, and it reminds me, somehow, of the Wild West.

Great Band. Why do they only have 10k. They deserve alot more
Cowboys Face give it time their first ever concert was only last summer
Something tells me this song is going to change that.
One of these songs will get picked up on a episode of a big Tv series and then they'll have a lot more
It is all to come.
For real
Seeing them live again in 10 days. Can't wait!
Dawn Satterwhite Thanks! The first time was supporting Prophets of Rage - I didn't know them before that. This one is a headline show :-)
Stop making me jealous! 😉

I'm seeing them September 20 in Philadelphia.

This is the most beautiful thing I've heard in years. Amazing song.
this is just a masterîece, just take this amount of soul and this amount of metal and do it again baby please !
Almost sounds like he has a hint of Chris Cornell in his voice. I dig it.
Melon be praised! How have I NOT heard of this band? Any other like them? I NEED this in my life. Sweet Satan how long have I gone without!?
Perfect album finisher.
Deep song the best of zeal & Ardor

Such a phenomenal end to the album, hearing those wailing guitars at the beginning. AOTY 2018 and I still listen to it all the time!
Just incredible. SO. MANY. FEELS.
I can't stop listening to it.
Who gave Zeal and Ardor permission to be this good?
The will of the self
The left hand path
The Devil
Different ways of saying the same thing
Zeal and ardor by definition are not synonymous with asking
There is something about this song that is so breathtakingly gorgeous, and yet heartbreaking that I can't stop listening to it
I love the tremolo riffing so so so much, always gives me frisson
This song made me even more excited to see Zeal & Ardor for the first time, next month!
Just heard this in a Magic:The Gathering Ad and it was so fucking beautiful!
Crazy!
Dude, which ad? I need to know someone at WotC has good taste.
Now I’m even more excited to see them with Mastodon and Opeth. This is amazing.
cant wait to see you in Chicago!!
A breath of fresh air. This album is killer I generally picture the story track by track like a Tarantino film or something.
That's a pretty powerful song.

You notice the sound of marching behind these lyrics?
Just out of the concert tonight in Glasgow. It was a very good concert and their version of Built On Ashes tonight was amazing.
Much love from Florida, USA!
Yes!! Love this band.. just gives me idea to make more music!
How am I only just discovering them now?! This band needs much more exposure!
i was 3 years later than you
Still gives off goosebumps.
Somber music with soulful lyrics. Still dope. My ovaries exploded
ComaLies225 i love you (?
I love you too random youtuber :)
The soulful lyrics closely resemble a Billie Holiday song. Called Strange Fruit, which is one hell of a homage:

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Saw them live in Portland... I have to say they are a MUST SEE live. Beg Borrow or Steal to get tickets and see them.
Was sceptical of the mix at first but letting it build it’s awesome good job!
This song is beautiful
Awesome track! It's different but in a good way. Can't wait to hear the whole album!
seriously just discovered these guys, fully impressed.
The album is going to be amazing
THIS IS FANTASTIC I LOVE IT SO MUCH
theres two types of zeal and ardor listeners: the metalheads who see it as a way to enjoy lighter music and people seeing it as a way to enjoy metal
¿Por que no los dos?
as a metalhead i totaly agree
and then there's people listening to metal and lighter music that are just happy this exists :)
This feels more of a hybrid of parts of Baroness and of course, Black Metal elements we saw on the last release. Zeal and Ardor, welcome back!
And there are those who used to love his unique hybrid style and are disappointed to see him change for a conventional style
wow please come to Buffalo NY, such a breath of fresh metal
God the 2:30 slowdown lures me in so much that when 2:56 hits it hits like a truck so goddamn HEAVY
amazing as always
