You should've explored the vault a bit more, you can find the Sole Survivor dead and you could've taken his holotape and find out what happened then you can do the main story(as someone else of course)
Are you using the next gen update? If so, you will need to downgrade the game to get it running properly. Just go to www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/81630 and follow the instructions in the description. I've had to downgrade myself more than a few times in the past, and this one is the easiest to use, also the newest.
