Hello friend- i just wanted to thank you for THE BEST D5100 VIDEO TUTORIAL. tHE TITLE TO THE VIDEO is perfect and not misleading. you helped me soooo much!!! why can't all tutorials be this good? i just have a comment/question...my screen on the d5100 goes blank so fast- like when i'm trying to figure out the proper settings for a photo- i've heard others complain about this. is their a button or setting to keep the led screen lit longer so i can "study" the settings for the perfect picture!!!
Just stumbled on this & what an awesome piece of info. Now I can use my expensive camera properly instead of paying a lot of money for a point n shoot.
I know this is an old video, but damn this was helpful still! I'm running around with my (by now, old) Nikon D5100, starting out doing photography more and more, and this video really helped me out in explaining a whole lot!
+Mads Fedders Me too! My mum bought it years ago but only used it once in a while. I've recently decided to learn how to use it properly. I've just figure out that I had the focus mode in auto and that's why the camera was going crazy. Much better with a single or continuos!
I have the Nikon d5100 and love your tutorials. By far the best on youtube. The most difficulty I have is photographing indoor sports. I have yet to get a decent pic of my son playing basketball. Do you have a vid with tips on indoor sports shooting with the d5100? If not, anything quick that you could suggest? Thank you fine Englishman!
I don't have videos of that Im afraid, as its not something that interests me, but in an indoor sport environment , you'll need a fast lens and a high ISO to freeze the action. Minimum of an f/2.8 lens I would suggest and ISO high enough to get about a 1/500 or faster shutter speed. You'll probably need to do a custom white balance too, as the lights will probably be a funny colour temperature.
It's nice to have something online that helps you understand your camera but unfortunately i must have a newer version of the software because right off the bat the instructions aren't working. If I press the info button yes I get the same screen but pressing it again I get a blank. It does not take me to the Image Quality screen. I had to go to the shooting menu and then I could get to the image quality section. I'm not going to spend 15 minutes having to search around. I am going to hunt down a more recent version. This guy does a good job so I'm hoping he will update this video to the more recent version.
Very helpful video! Thanks alot, the only settings it allows me change are Image Quality and Release Mode, the others are all grayed out, not sure why or how to correct? Please help? Thanks again!
Still learning new things with this D5100! Thanks for the video. Would you know why my release mode keeps going back to continuous after every shot I take? I have set it to 2sec timer.. but it keeps switching back to continuous 😔
Hi, Thanks for the comments! As for the Monitor, try this. Enter the menu and go to the pencil Icon. Then menu item C2: Auto off timers. Set this to LONG, or custom and choose how long you want certain things to stay active for. That should solve it.
Got a budget Nikon DSLR but dont know what all the different menus and modes mean? Check out my Nikon D3100 and D5100 basic guides to help you figure it out.
I commented on a D3200 tutorial ask about if it's still good beginner DSLR Now Iam gonna ask the same question here because I found an D5100 offer better than D3200. Which one should I pick?
i have a 5100 and an external monitor, Aputure brand but the camera only records on the flip lcd screen and not the external monitor, what do you think the problem is??
Hi, I've recently purchased this dslr and have been trying to set it up,. Going according to ur tutorial video, at the point where you've selected RAW which automatically takes you to WB AUTO, for some reason my option is greyed out and the only options which arnt greyed out are S and AF-S ... Could you possibly help me with this?
great video I have a D5100 on my flash mode menu I have only three options auto , auto red eye and flash is there a software update for this camera and if so how do I update it thanks
At 0:42, you have all the available settings you can change. In my case I only have the capacity to change the picture size, flash and Auto focus setting. Only around 5 options are available to me whereas for you all the settings are open and changeable. Can you help me?
Hie, what could be the problem when i am getting the same starting screen like you but some of the functions are not highlighting so that i can make changes. I mean functions like the metering, active d-lighting,auto bracketing, exposure compensation and flash compensation?
The camera needs to be in A,M,S, or P mode to change the focus mode. In all other modes the camera automatically chooses the focus point. Clean sensor and mirror lock up could be disabled due to low battery, or for the same reason as before. Try setting the mode dial to M and try again.
That's because you have selected the mode "Auto" or anything else autmatic on the function-wheel. Try selecting the ones called "M", "A", "S" or "P". Hope this helped! :)
Hello. Thank you for the helpful video. I have a question. When I hit my "info" button the same screen pops up that is in your video however I am only able to get change "RAW" settings and "release" mode. Everything else is faded out and my cursor just skips right over them. For example, I am unable to change my ISO. Do you know why or how I can fix this? I cannot get into any of my other settings. Thank you.
It will depend what mode the mode dial is on. Anything other than M, A,S or P will result in many things being able to be selected. Even P mode will leave some options greyed out. Also other menu selections can grey out other certain things.
Hi, i'm new to this camera and have a question. In your video youe get 5 options for the flashmode, i only got 3. I only have flash, red eye and rear. Why do you got more options there?

I'm from Southern California, my question is this. How do I get a good shot of the Milky Way? Like if I'm shooting at 6400 I have 200 mm lens and then what is my exp time?
Hi,I have a nikon d5200 with 18-55 vr lens,bt when I take pictures they are clear and sharp but can you tell me how to get that blur background with only the object highlighted,I get such images only if I the object is close by or I take close up pictures,
renvik almeida You need a wide aperture and the subject needs to have decent separation from the background, IE, the subject needs to be closer than the background is. You won't get it if the subject is stood against a wall for example, however if they are 10 feet away from the wall, you'll start to see the effect. The further they are, the better it will be.The kit lens isn't the best lens to achieve this, but it is possible in the right circumstances.
I'm a pro and I have a D4, D2H and a D5100 that I got used for $100.00. The image quality on the D100 is just as good as the D7000. The biggest thing is that the D5100 has no built in autofocus motor, so you need to focus manually. I shoot in JPEG/RAW, the colors are much better in RAW. IF you are looking for a good DSLR then you can't go wrong with a D5100.

Sorry, Its not something Ive ever done so not really sure. All I can suggest is you make sure the exposures are identical between pictures, so use manual mode or lock the exposure in one of the semi auto modes
+dikolasbmx Its just the normal info screen. There is a setting in the menu for graphical or some other option I think, so it might be that thats different.
All menu options are dependent on other settings. If you are shooting in RAW, a lot of menu items won't be accessible as they don't apply. If something is greyed out, it means it can't be changed in the current configuration. If that's the case youll have to figure out why. It's usually being in a fully auto mode, shooting raw or being in a manual mode and trying to use auto features.
I don't know how you selected Image size. I saw you make several attempts to do it and then you were finally successful. I do not know what button your were pushing.

When in video mode how do you zoom in and out?
With the lens, same as taking a photo.
I don't want to sound dense, but are you referring to the focus or the zoom?
The zoom, you can't zoom with the camera, only with a lens providing of course you have a lens that can zoom fitted.
