      He kind of seems like he just decided devil's advocate was the best role to play if he doesn't know much about the games but in a series like this where he actually has to vote for one, him leaning towards voting for something he doesn't necessarily like just because Jirard is voting for the other one just seems like it's not in keeping with the spirit of an elimination bracket based on popular vote.

      @@Angus_MacFarlane Not having the console in his youth is one thing. But Barry has made it clear that he has only played a handful of PS1 games on the bracket. If you're gonna be on a panel arguing about the best PS1 game, I think having significant experience playing the game is paramount. If you didn't play it as a kid, but played it only a few years ago, that's fine. I mean, I only had 5 games on my SNES growing up, but I've played enough of them in the years since that I could reasonably debate anyone on a Best SNES Game bracket. However, the only Genesis games I have any experience in are the Sonic games and the first Vectorman game, so I would be a TERRIBLE choice for a Best Genesis Game debate.

    Everyone's complaining about Barry, but I think Lee is doing a poor job this season. If it comes down to a tiebreaker, he always goes with the controversial pick for the sake of being controversial, which is evident in the Ape Escape v Final Fantasy 9 discussion. He's not going the game with better arguments, he's being a d*** to whoever gives better points for no good reason. For that I think this is a bad season.

    • @briannamcfarland5974
      @briannamcfarland5974 5 лет назад +15

      I don't think there's any evidence to back that up because Forrest just states the game and that's the end of it. You might be right, but he never explains himself. I wish he'd say at least a single sentence explaining why he chose one game over the other.

    • @DiabloCloud
      @DiabloCloud 5 лет назад +18

      Agree with you, some episodes he says that, by the arguments, a game won. And only by the arguments, like in RE2 win. This time, i believe that, almost objectively, crash was better defended than spyro, but the arguments didnt matter this time. He is clearly trying to be controversial and it works, a lot of comments and angry viewers that keep coming here. Not profesional if you want a good debate, but clearly draws attention. I am upset, would prefer either a fair debate and judging decision or a full funny vision.
      What i have to add, the edit, the gameplay videos and everything has to improve, i do not know if it is Lee who does that

    • @DiscordiaCosplay
      @DiscordiaCosplay 5 лет назад +9

      I can agree, it seemed like right out the gate he was against Crash even when Jirard like pointed and debunked the idea that the controls were bad the simple fact was Barry and Shane didn't bother to try and understand the mechanics and yet in Ape Escape vs FF9, Barry was like, "the controls are fine." And Shane was like, "um no?" Like WTF are they doing this season, like "objectively FF9 is better, but we haven't played it so... Ape Escape wins!" Like WTF no that's not how this works, you've established in episodes prior that's not how this works, you've already said in the N64 one that our favorite doesn't make it the best and again in the 90s cartoon one! Like WTF!

    • @ForrestFurst
      @ForrestFurst 5 лет назад +7

      I'm not sure how you've gathered that, but I apologize if its come off that way. The only matchup I feel like I actually did that with was for FFIX vs Ape Escape, but for this one... I legitimately thought that the game that won had the better arguments for it. I personally feel that the game that lost has weaker controls, and is therefore a lesser game (still great!). The panelists defending said game only had "well, you need to play it more", which I do not believe is a good argument for convincing someone (or at least me) that one platformer is better than another.
      Again, other than the aforementioned Ape Escape Fiasco of 2018, I do not understand what I've done to make you feel this way, but I apologize for it. However, I do stand by all of my decisions and believe that the I voted for the games with the superior arguments in (almost) every episode.

    I don't think I've ever had a problem with Crash 2's controls. Crash has a defined weight, but he's also floaty enough to have good aerial maneuverability to help with second guessing jumps. He has a defined jump arc depending on the direction pressed and how hard the Jump button was pressed, and he control nearly identical in each camera change (although I do dislike the 2.5D near-isometric side-scrolling bonus levels, the 2D side-scrolling levels are vastly superior). Spyro 1 on the other hand, compared to Spyro 2 and 3, and especially Crash 2 and 3, probably has the weakest controls. Spyro moves in such a way that momentum is being fought, and the inactive-active camera system fights with the surprisingly fast paced movement and (low amount of required) platforming. Spyro is innately slippery on his feet, and the constant need to make near-perfect jumps (which were fixed/removed in 2 and 3, especially with the addition of the saving grace that was the hover/flutter) or risk immediate death and a relatively quick loading screen really hampers the actual platforming of the game.
    I also don't know how Spyro 1 beat out the clearly superior Spyro 2, and the superior but slightly inferior to Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon. Either not enough people voted, or the ones that did had (from how much fans talk about and judge, and personally) unpopular opinions towards the coveted trilogies earliest incarnation. I can see why Crash 2 won out of that trilogy, though. Crash 2 was (like with Spyro 3) more focused in theme and levels, and had a bit more character staying power and growth

    I'm just wondering but how are Crash 2's controls bad? From playing it quite recently and over the years they always felt responsive, done what was intended, very little if any delay for inputs so it feels weird they are so hung up on this issue for a game that had fine controls. Plus the way Barry talks about the camera, as if it goes flying all over the place all the time, it is either behind you and moves with you or it is along the lines of old school 2d platformers moving from left to right.
    Edit: Further on in the video, it almost feels as if they have never played platformers because they can't judge jump distances?

      Well apparently the theme this season is take whatever one single shitty argument you have whether it makes sense or not and run with it, and hope you just make Forrest agree with you so you win, that's been more or less every episode this season, just throw out any prior arguments we've made in the past, like, "just because I like it doesn't make it objectively better." Like Barry is so out of his element, Forrest just feels like he's got a vendetta and Shane lands somewhere in the middle, meanwhile Caddy and Jirard are trying to actually objectively pick the better games for case and point watch RE2 vs Silent Hill, despite Caddy loving silent I think he even said he liked it more, he knew objectively RE2 was better so he voted for it, that's what should be going on they're supposed to be deciding the best of the system not playing favorites. Even PBG voted against his favorite TV shows when he knew that objectively speaking they were worse than the thing they were going against.

    Jirard brought the hammer today. That was well explained.
    I understand Barry and Shanes' control gripe as I did experience it. Regarding both fronts I sit with Barry in the green camp as I never owned a PS1 or either game. But in my time playing Crash is tighter but Spyro was a bit loafty and almost more forgiving.
    A little bummed that story was not discussed really. Neither are sublime but worth a mention. Crash's soundtrack is a major victory over Spyro.
    Why are you collecting Gems in Spyro? Dragons are story related but gems? Crash had the story gem and two other items but which had the more important collectable? A lot on controls which are critical for both but left the rest of the game to freeze on both fronts.
    Final long winded feedback: Shane seems rather distant compared to past seasons, not as excited I feel. Maybe PS isn't his jam so it was nice to see his feedback. Barry coming in more or less blind and nostalgic free is nice. Bummer about all the hate in the comments but pretty much he could be the swing vote before Mr. Lee. Have them convince you why their favorite game is better. While weighing your preferences. Jirard focusing it back to the two entries vs the franchise was good and Caddy was/is at home regarding PS1 titles.
    Overall interested and lots of growing pain fellas. Keep at it.

      @Serithin 5 лет назад

      @@burgskeletal3149 Perhaps that is the case for the last couple levels but do those alone define it? People could argue the opening hours are the pacing to the game and define it by that alone. I would hope the further into the game you go a more of the challenge it becomes. Now are the later levels poorly designed for the controls? Or vice versa? A lot could have been discussed but was hung up on controls.
      I dunno which Crash it is but Stormy Ascent (Remastered exclusive yes?) And The High Road from a lot of people get the bird. The only level from Spyro I know that even comes close is the Twisted Tree level due to required use of the super charge which apparently does not handle well in combination with the camera. Either way a lot to cover in sub 22min.
      Crates sometimes were a puzzle to pop and even provided a hazard, so a good reward while the gems I felt were just there with a couple instances of where is the key or firework. The sound effects in Spyro were more fun I think as a whole but the soundtrack to Spyro does not stand out to me. I like Spyro's fantasy dragon aesthetic but Jirard even said it was empty feeling.

      Kratos Sagara Stormy Ascent and The High Road are from Crash 1. I'm not saying the later levels of Spyro 1 are unfair, but they are less forgiving than later levels in Crash 2.
      I actually think Spyro 1 has Crash 2 beat when it comes to the early levels. The Artisan hubworld in Spyro 1 is so charming.
      I enjoy the crates more from a gameplay perspective, but sound effect when you collect gems is soooo satisfying.
      I wouldnt say Spyro 1 is empty per se. I think lonely is a better word to describe it since there are no interactive NPCs in the game.

    • @Serithin
      @Serithin 5 лет назад +1

      Fair enough perhaps I misunderstood what you meant in the original post in regards to later levels. That is fair to say I suppose, I have not played either that far just watched play throughs.
      The Artisian Hub is wonderful and a joy to traverse. The hub to Crash 2 is like the gameplay, condensed and to the point. One not being outright better in any sense.
      Crash did not have NPCs either to my knowledge but due to the more on screen condensed nature of Crash it feels fuller but less connected. Spyro is a bit lean but everything is fairly well connected, both transition and theme.
      For sure a touch match up which is why I was a little bummed controls were the MAIN point when each has a lot more to discuss.

You see, in the first game crashes hitbox is exactly that, a square box. This causes a lot of the jumps in Crash 1 to be more forgiving as you could literally be floating in air as you jump. In the later games, they rounded the hitbox, making crash slide off things if he got to close. I agree with Jirard (and disagree with Furst) in his remark about them not really having discussed what really make the games great and their intricacies; I'm personally happy Spyro won - not just because I prefer the series over Crash but also because there's a legitimate point to be made about playing Spyro 1 in conjunction with the other ones.
    They make it sound a bit as if the sequels are simply objectively better in every single way - and in most of the mechanical ways, they absolutely are. However, the elements that make the first Spyro game unique still holds true to this very day. The way in which the worlds are linked by a hubworld, and theme-related worlds in it, producing a very coherent atmosphere (the music also does a great job at accentuating that, since the worlds often have unique sound-quirks and such); while the sequels have a hubworld - and then a bunch of completely unrelated levels inside. Which, by the way, is NOT worse - it's just different. The somewhat desolate nature of the first game; few NPCs (basically the dragons once you save them), somewhat daunting and oppresive levels at points (looking at you, Dark Passage) also makes it rather unique - while Spyro 2 and 3 have ton of related NPCs to the worlds, quests and such. Gonna sound like a doof, but going to quickly compare them to Fallout 3 vs. New Vegas, as 3 tends to focus more on a lonesome, solemn journey, while NV is filled with NPCs and quests and lore and such.
    Therefore, I believe there's a case to be made about getting a different experience from the first game and the others - even when the controls and general mechanics will be way updated.
    Hope they will get a chance to air these points next time it's up, but not sure they will be.

Both brought something to the PlayStation era. Crash went from 3d to 2d platforming. Sypro massive areas brought the seeing something far away. Crash continue his story brought new stuff and a polar bear to his game. Sypro style kept the same for the next two games meaning it was a great base to build up from. Both games don't really have an in-depth story but that because both are supposed to be like a cartoon. From start to death and to end I felt and still feel like I am playing a cartoon. If you just want to run around I Spyro and do absolutely nothing just touch a bunch of enemies then you can. With Crash Bandicoot, you can't be a Casual Gamer. In Crash Bandicoot you have to realize what you are doing to do it. In Spyro the Dragon you can do pretty much whatever you want on the first home world. Basically you don't have to be limited in Spiro of what to do. If you want to charging a circle you can, if you decide you want to get to a high ledge and fly you can. In Crash Bandicoot you have no choice if you go into a level on what you want to do. Even when I play the insane trilogy and played crash to there, I had no option on what I wanted to do or freedom. This was the most looked forward to episode for me, and I'm glad the victor was Spyro. As a kid, I had more fun with Spyro, more fond memories, just enjoyed it more. When the remastered Crash games were announced, I was like, oh, cool, I never got to play 3, might look into that. When the Spyro Reignited Trilogy was announced, I lost my damn mind. And I hadn't even played Ripto's Rage nor Year of the Dragon.

    The biggest problem I have had so far is that it feels as though the people talking about the games are coming in with their choice made before the argument. I can't think of a point where the vote went different than what they knew they were going to choose from the start. It kind of removes the point of the discussion itself.

    The lack of experience this panel has on the topic of ps1 games is actually maddening. I don't think this is enlightening at all when Barry bases all his arguments on the first hour. And just like Jirard said, they never got into what makes the games good, and the newcomers to each game just speak to the controls of each game nearly exclusicely.
    Newcomers can not go deep on how satisfying each game is. I HATE how much the "which game would you rather pick up and play right now" comes up. That eliminates any rpg from the running... the ps1 is a treasure trove of beloved, amazing, rewarding rpgs with tons of content, but because ape escape is an easier game to pick up and play, it wins.
    Likewise, spyro is the easier feeling game at first, so it wins.
    I would rather see a panel of normal boots fans who are well versed on the subject matter in its entirety over the normal boots cast if they're not going to take the research seriously . I may have a tolerance for each panelist to have limited experience in one game max each season.

    To play devils advocate, I can think of at least one thing Spyro 1 does better than the later ones: having a straight forward objective. The objective of Spyro 2 is to collect all the talismans, did I say talismans? I meant orbs, so you can beat napoleon bad guy and save the alternate universe you don't care about because you just wanted to go to an amusement park. Spyro 1? You are a dragon, every other dragon got trapped in crystal, free them from the crystals and beat up the guy who did it. Later Spyro games followed suit with other collect-a-thons and filled themselves with different objectives; Spyro 1 stayed simple and pure, explore for dragons and free dragons. You were never at a loss for what to do.
    This all being said, yeah the later games were bigger and mechanically better, just wanted to give a reason why some one might like the first one most. Also something occurred to me while watching this, why is Tomb Raider not on the bracket?

    Okay so the truth is this. Sypro is very see through. It is clear what the idea of the game was. Crash is confusing as all get out when conveying its control concept. Side scroll crsh, third person crash, over head crash. No real clear state of mind as the game is rather jaggedly put together. Spyro on the other hand is jump collect. Do it in lava. DO IT ON ICE. it's fun. it works also purple dragon. SOOOOOOO GREAT CHOICE.

    I am surprised that the entire argument for Spyro was "Better controls" but no discussion of the better characters, story, music, boss fight, level design, Graphics or entertainment value which was a clear winner on all fronts for Crash 2 in my opinion.

    problem is, spyro doesnt show much flaw until later into the game. but when it happens the game gets so frustrating because there is nothing you can do. the issue with crash controls are an issue of timing when you fall or miss an enemy. the flaws are immediate, but as you progress you get used to it. i think the issue here is they didnt play either game for long enough to adjust to it.

    This was a really well debated episode guys! Good job! I love Crash and Spyro and either or would have been a win for me. However Crash 2 (IMO) doesn't hold up to Spyro. And it is on a control basis. Spyro's controls cater to the job you are trying to do in the game, the camera although not the best isn't out to deceive you. Crash 2 had AN ENTIRE second game to work out its kinks in hit boxes and controls and they didn't. As Barry said when approaching a pit it is difficult to determine how to make the jump. For those who say it's not at all, chances are that, like Jirard and Caddy, you've become desensitized to the poor camera placement and awkward hit box. Spyro you can keep going and rarely die with the exception of maybe Treetop. Also the only reason Crash probably even has so many different death animations is because of the BS and how frequently you die in the game which yes makes it charming but ultimately they put decorations on a hole in the wall and say it's fine.

    I love both Crash Bandicoot 2 and Spyro the Dragon, but to me this competition isn't even close. Crash Bandicoot 2 has acceptable platforming with linear level designs that essentially hit the same beats over and over again with the occasional appearance of frustration. Spyro the Dragon is a massive game with gigantic worlds to explore and deeper mechanics when it comes to gliding, super charging, understanding how to tackle different enemies with different moves, and entire secret areas to discover when you put it all together. It's like comparing Crash Bandicoot to Super Mario 64 only Spyro takes everything that Mario 64 does well and improves upon them to a massive degree to make a game that is still a blast to play today regardless of nostalgia.

      I don't think they wanted Spyro to win, per se. Most people are saying Barry doesn't have much experience playing these games, he is as impartial as it gets.
      The best defense the Completionist could come up with was "you haven't played the game long enough."

    This whole season has been riddled with the same damn problem. You have guests who have not sufficiently played enough of the games to comment effectively. How about for the next season you tell the people involved beforehand to go and complete all the games on the list and then make them discuss them. So far I feel so bad for Jirard because he is the only one who has played every single game mentioned to completion, and yet the others are just like "Well I've played an hour of the other game and I think it is better". I think Jirard has been the only one who has made the right choice every single time, but has been outvoted by people who haven't even finished or in some cases even played the games mentioned.
