There is nothing inherently better or worse about the placement of any given function on a controller. Because of what Ape Escape chose to do with its control scheme, which has both thumbs almost always on the analog sticks, while also being a platformer, jump on R1 is the 100% most logical choice.

I can't speak for the other guys, but the PSOne is far from his specialty and it's Caddicarus' focus. Caddicarus is also a Final Fantasy hater, though, so I would still turn to Jirard on the RPG front.

Maybe next time you could decide between yourselves which game in a franchise to talk about as the best. Polling the public on which Crash game is the best or which Spyro game is the best seems to make the conversation more about why the public is wrong and how that effects your decisions. I imagine the conversations would be more focused if you all had a general agreement going in which game would be best to talk about regardless of public opinion.

I think it's more so that they already said everything they could about parappa when it was going against FF7. Plus, it's easier to have a more level debate about two games (Crash 2 and CTR) rather than 3 (Parappa, Crash 2, and CTR). So they kinda weed out the "worst" one as soon as possible.

I will say this. I used to play CTR with my family alot back in the day, and it was the only game my mom ever really enjoyed playing. I think that says alot about it. She never liked any other game enough to want to play it.
I feel like the three-way matches are never fair to one of the competitors in every single bracket that's been done. Would it not be maybe a better idea to have 16 entries instead of 12 so it can be set out like a proper tournament bracket and all the matches are 1v1? Just food for thought, I'm sure it's probably been brought up before.
We did a few test seasons before we filmed anything, including a lineup of 16 games. It got VERY difficult to talk about the games that made it to the finals of the brackets because we'd talked about them 4-5 times. This format is not perfect, but it was the best we could come up with.

I always used the exhaust from your kart in CTR as an indicator of when to boost instead of the meter on the right. Much easier that way since you can keep your eyes on your character.
Had a thought here: one of the things about this series (not necessarily this episode, but others for sure) is that there can be such a disconnect from what I think about or love from something and what's discussed. Is there a way to have audience sort of vote in to sway things? If there's a good way to do it, having the audience vote serve as a tie breaker would be really cool. Obviously, might make it rougher if you normally record all these in a couple of goes, but I think it could really engage the audience and avoid that feeling of being almost cheated if it feels like something's been overlooked in these discussions.

Well Parappa is hot garbage that people seem to remember it being good even though it objectively isn't. If it didn't have a unique art style nobody would ever even remember that it existed.
Maybe you guys should change up how you do the losers brackets. It seems like each one has one game shoved off to the side and it becomes a 1V1 anyway, so why not make it 1V1 until you have 3 solid games at the end where a 3 way free for all will be more balanced?

Parappa is looked down upon too much. It's a great game and still a lot of fun. Also, it easily has the best music out of these three games, I still have all of these songs stuck in my head. "What you gonna do, when they come? I gotta believe!"
I like Parappa but I think the sequel is much better. Also as a rhythm gamer I don't like the gameplay particularly much with the way to get "Cool" mode being pretty flawed.
@@MusicJunkie37 I couldn't disagree more. These games are all about the music for me and there is not one song on Parappa 2 that gets close in quality to even the weakest songs on Parappa 1. Those songs are sooo good, and all the songs on Parappa 2 are boring and forgettable. The only one that kinda comes close is the one from stage 3 "BIG". But the rest, just forgettable. Heck, even the introduction song for stage 6 in Parappa 1 is so great.

See, that's the type of discussion I'm interested, not like in Crash vs Spyro. Jirard and Caddy talked in detail because they played the games a lot.The others did put some input in, but not that nonsense like in the first round (especially when they didn't play the game or just short amount of time)
I'd agree that Mario 64 is better than Mario Kart but I think Diddy Kong Racing is better than DK 64, so I guess what I'm saying is I think Diddy Kong Racing better captures what makes a good PLAYSTATION game, not just a good game.
Great episode! CTR vs Crash 2 is an interesting match up, but I do think Crash 2 is way more fun because of the way Crash Bandicoot games are set up. Lots of dying, lots of reward for playing well, and lots of checkpoints. It's way more engaging single player wise as well. CTR is, like Barry said, great for half an hour and then pretty samey. Of course it's more fun with friends but the same can be said for Crash 2 with watching a friend play. Those death animations are always a treat.
I'm with Barry. I can't stand when games force you to move towards the camera with no visibility. Naughty Dog games and Metal Gear Solid 2 are particularly bad offenders. Instead of a fair challenge that's reliant on skill, you're put at a disadvantage that can only be overcome by failing until you memorize the layout. If you were allowed camera control in these situations, it becomes a joke. With MGS2, it's usually an issue when backtracking through a hallway and your soliton can't see a dude at the end and you also can't see the environment to find hiding spots and such, so by the time you can see him, there's nowhere to go and it's too late.
Well they're calling the second game "The Last Of Us - Part II", which means that when we get to the fourth title and it's a racer... it has to be "The Last Of Us - Cart IV"
Crash 2 is an experience that I’m glad I went through. It was the first game that I got on the console. It was the first game I had for a long time to play. I completed it (which you have to do to experience the actual ending of the game). That being said, I would NEVER play it again. I don’t like it. The sloppy controls, all the collectibles that you have to constantly go back through and get, the camera angles, the BOXES...it’s not a fun time. It’s a bit of a mess. I never picked up another numbered Crash game because I was that repulsed by the experience of 2. I didn’t pick Naughty Dog up again in a main story title until Jak and Daxter, and I think the original Jak and Daxter takes Crash’s formula and does it better. The world feels better. It’s not segmented into “bits” that are meant for you to trial and error to death until you’ve memorized it. It’s a better game. Then it’s goes off and becomes GTA (but that’s another story). Parappa the Rapper is also a mess. The concept is good, but the game doesn’t work. You can’t have a rhythm game that doesn’t follow its own rhythm mechanically and call it good. Even in the remaster they DON’T fix it! CTR on the other hand I got hours and hours of entertainment out of. They keep comparing it to MarioKart, but something CTR has that MarioKart doesn’t is a STORY. That blew my mind as a kid. I loved cart racers but always tired of them quickly because there was no end game objective. I grew up having to play a lot of games alone so the multiplayer option wasn’t a selling point. CTR was the first cart racer I had played where I could feel a sense of progression. Now, arguably you could say that the progression in CTR is the same as Crash 2. You’re still trial and erroring through levels, getting multiple collectibles, etc...but that grindy experience feels much better in a cart racer. I don’t feel the same level of revulsion for CTR that I feel for Crash 2. If anything, I feel the opposite. I 100%ed CTR and would happily go back to do it again. I think at the end of the day, for me, Crash’s formula hits much better as a racer than a platformer, and it’s a no brained for me to go with CTR.

Caddy's like let me kick back and put my feet up and lay out some truth. As much as I love Crash 2 and Parappa, CTR wins this one by a long shot in terms of just sheer replayability, tight controls, and of course multiplayer.
Crash v spyro was really ez for me. Crash was always better thanks to it's humor, characters, controls and levels. Crash 2 v ctr is even easier. I mean, i know i've said be4 ctr is a perfect game and NO other kart racer even comes close (especially DKRacing, maybe 1-2 mario karts but still not AS good) but i prefer crash 2 coz i love platforming, racing not that much. Bout Parappa i never cared for these types of games, same with rpgs so *_mEh_*

My memory of Crash 3 is still of it being the Crash game that doesn't let you play as Crash. At least 25% was a vehicle/riding/Coco level.

Uncharted 4 may not of been the fabled Unkarted, but they did make all those Jeep mechanics ;).
I'd agree that Mario 64 is better than Mario Kart but I think Diddy Kong Racing is better than DK 64, so I guess what I'm saying is I think Diddy Kong Racing better captures what makes a good PLAYSTATION game, not just a good game.
Am I the only one that remembers Crash Nitro Kart on the PS2? No one mentioned that CTR was good enough to get a sequel already.

Great episode! CTR vs Crash 2 is an interesting match up, but I do think Crash 2 is way more fun because of the way Crash Bandicoot games are set up. Lots of dying, lots of reward for playing well, and lots of checkpoints. It's way more engaging single player wise as well. CTR is, like Barry said, great for half an hour and then pretty samey. Of course it's more fun with friends but the same can be said for Crash 2 with watching a friend play. Those death animations are always a treat.

I'm with Barry. I can't stand when games force you to move towards the camera with no visibility. Naughty Dog games and Metal Gear Solid 2 are particularly bad offenders. Instead of a fair challenge that's reliant on skill, you're put at a disadvantage that can only be overcome by failing until you memorize the layout. If you were allowed camera control in these situations, it becomes a joke. With MGS2, it's usually an issue when backtracking through a hallway and your soliton can't see a dude at the end and you also can't see the environment to find hiding spots and such, so by the time you can see him, there's nowhere to go and it's too late.

CTR is my favorite game of all time, and the remake made it so much better than it already was
Crash 2. I've 100%ed that game on the PS1, PS3, and N. Sane Trilogy. Hands down the best Crash game.

Crash 2 is an experience that I’m glad I went through. It was the first game that I got on the console. It was the first game I had for a long time to play. I completed it (which you have to do to experience the actual ending of the game). That being said, I would NEVER play it again. I don’t like it. The sloppy controls, all the collectibles that you have to constantly go back through and get, the camera angles, the BOXES...it’s not a fun time. It’s a bit of a mess. I never picked up another numbered Crash game because I was that repulsed by the experience of 2. I didn’t pick Naughty Dog up again in a main story title until Jak and Daxter, and I think the original Jak and Daxter takes Crash’s formula and does it better. The world feels better. It’s not segmented into “bits” that are meant for you to trial and error to death until you’ve memorized it. It’s a better game. Then it’s goes off and becomes GTA (but that’s another story).
Parappa the Rapper is also a mess. The concept is good, but the game doesn’t work. You can’t have a rhythm game that doesn’t follow its own rhythm mechanically and call it good. Even in the remaster they DON’T fix it!
CTR on the other hand I got hours and hours of entertainment out of. They keep comparing it to MarioKart, but something CTR has that MarioKart doesn’t is a STORY. That blew my mind as a kid. I loved cart racers but always tired of them quickly because there was no end game objective. I grew up having to play a lot of games alone so the multiplayer option wasn’t a selling point. CTR was the first cart racer I had played where I could feel a sense of progression. Now, arguably you could say that the progression in CTR is the same as Crash 2. You’re still trial and erroring through levels, getting multiple collectibles, etc...but that grindy experience feels much better in a cart racer. I don’t feel the same level of revulsion for CTR that I feel for Crash 2. If anything, I feel the opposite. I 100%ed CTR and would happily go back to do it again. I think at the end of the day, for me, Crash’s formula hits much better as a racer than a platformer, and it’s a no brained for me to go with CTR.
Crash 2. It doesn't have shortcuts, but it has a lot of secrets and extra paths.

crash team racing was a game i only played becuase i was a fan of crash bandicoot, if i wasnt i fan or it wasnt a crash game, id have never played it.
Crash v spyro was really ez for me. Crash was always better thanks to it's humor, characters, controls and levels. Crash 2 v ctr is even easier. I mean, i know i've said be4 ctr is a perfect game and NO other kart racer even comes close (especially DKRacing, maybe 1-2 mario karts but still not AS good) but i prefer crash 2 coz i love platforming, racing not that much. Bout Parappa i never cared for these types of games, same with rpgs so *_mEh_*
