I don't really care about the rules of the "tournament" I'm just enjoying these guys talk these old Nintendo games together. The conversation in the moment seems to determine the outcome, which makes the show more engaging because they don't hold the games to the same metrics in every video. Looking forward to more ^^

Regarding the Goldeen vs Magikarp... I always thought it was a reference to one of the first Pokemon episodes where Ash grabs a pokeball randomly and throws it against team rocket when a Goldeen appears. Ash is confused when the Goldeen appears to be pointless and Misty tells him that water Pokemon need water to be effective. Idk if that's the case with ssb, but that's what I always assumed.

The only reason I could possibly see mm losing is because it came out later in the consoles life so it never had the backup of people who didnt end up playing it as they upgraded not too long after its release but that being said majoras mask is the best game in the bottom 6 tier for sure and imo it was a better n64 game than z:oot but that goes back to the majoras mask was released later on in the life of n64 so it didnt gain as much steam as most games
Two of these games have been succeeded by vastly superior sequels. Diddy Kong Racing is unique, and has not been surpassed by any other game since its release. If I'm going to play Smash, it'll be Smash 4 (or Ultimate in a few months), if I'm going to play Mario Kart, it'll be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and if anybody were to ask me which game they should buy in the series, Smash 64 and Mario Kart 64 are NOT the ones I'd suggest. Diddy Kong Racing is the only one out of these three that I'd go out of my way to get a 64 set up to play, so it's the better 64 game out of the three.
DKR honestly doesn't hold up well and it's mostly because of the track design. They're extremely plain in theming and structure. Also them having to accommodate the 3 different vehicle types makes some of those tracks significantly worse depending on the vehicle. The novelty of the single player mode only goes so far. The core gameplay of MK64 is more tightly designed compared to DKR.
Honestly during my university years, we would sit around and play smash 64 for hours despite melee being the better game and brawl being brand new at the time, glad to see it at least won the losers braket

Some games like Zelda are worth going back to because previous entries still have value. The idea of a game like Mario Kart or Smash is to improve the game. Once a formula is mastered, more content can be added through DLC

I like how ProJared kept bringing the group back to the main point of why the group met up. All in all I'm really loving this show. All the guys involved are just great RUclipsrs.
I had never heard about Samus or Metroid until Super Smash Bros. Samus ended up being my main fighter in Super Smash Bros and on that basis alone it encouraged me to buy Metroid Prime when it released on Gamecube, which ended up being my favorite game for that system. in fact many characters that Smash Bros introduced i had never heard of which prompted me to try their games. Captain Falcon, Ice Climbers, Marth, Roy, Ike, Little Mac, Ness Lucas, Rob, Mr Game & Watch, Even Solid Snake. I had no idea whom these characters were before they were added to the Smash roster, but I am so glad they were included. It prompted my to check out each one of their games and because of that i have had tremendous fun exploring these characters games and backstories. I think there is something to be said for Smash's ability encourage players to try games of the characters in it's roster, which in turn increases my enjoyment of Super Smash Bros.

To be said about DKR vs Smash 64's soundtracks. Smash is just a compilation. Remixed or "Battle-fied," the themes are iconic, and some (Like dreamland) almost stand as the more popular version to their originals. Diddy Kong Racing is like the album from your favorite band. Everything is original, and it fits perfectly with the feel of the game, it wouldn't feel the same with out it. Imagine racing the Triceratops guy without the music, I honestly think it would lose some of the appeal, and I don't think their could be any other song that could capture the same feel. As a comparison: Smash is like those compilation albums, maybe done by some DJ, and he got all the classics! Each song is iconic, because of the preceding games they represent. But Diddy Kong Racing is more like a Beatles record. No matter the song, there is care put into the music to help it fit the game. I think as far as "ORIGINAL" soundtracks are, DKR wins. But in terms of "Classic hits" Smash has the better OST.
Good series. I have one thing to change and thats the background music. Please only use instrumental versions. Once the DK rap came on, all I could here is the background. Thanks Guys !
I love DKR, and I didn't play much of Smash but I will say that I am okay with this decision. In a single player context; DKR wins hands down. So much more content, so much more potential for enjoyment. In multiplayer: Smash is always a crowd pleaser, even to those that had never played it before. In college myself and 2 buddies played Smash (my first time) on an emulator and had one of the most fun nights of couch gaming I've ever had.
This was probably the debate with the most solid arguments. Some really good points raised here, mostly positive, and the "but which is the most definitive good N64 game?!" argument actually was used in a way that made sense for once.
Also in agreement here. I love Diddy Kong Racing, but I just have so many more memories of Smash Bros 64. It was always me and my buddy playing. Me using Wizard Pikachu vs Blue Kirby on either Saffron City or Sector Z.
In SSBB, my brother and I would each be a character with a reflection ability on Pokémon Stadium (OG or 2) with Pokéballs only. You each had a side that was separated by the Pokéball on the stage. If you crossed the line, then you get to hit your opponent... It was so much fun (until the disc stopped working).
I'm going to be the contrarian here, and say that I didn't care much for Diddy Kong Racing. I can still sit down with MarioKart 64, and still have fun.
Am I the only one that prefers Mario Kart 64 over Diddy Kong Racing. DKR has more content sure, but MK64 had better tracks and controls. The tracks in DKR all tended to blend together.

Smash 1 - Master Hand is established by the opening as being a kid playing with his dolls. Melee - The trophy room implies that the child is older now and, while they still enjoy the franchises of their childhood, their tastes in merchandise have refined a bit. Brawl - The Subspace Emissary establishes that Master Hand is being imprisoned by a powerful entity known as Tabuu. Brawl came out long enough after Melee that anyone over the age of 12 when Melee came out would be considered an adult when Brawl came out. Not sure about Japan, but I know in the US, at least in the years surrounding Brawl's release, an adult openly enjoying "kid stuff" would definitely have drawn some funny looks from the general public. In other words, it was a social taboo. The Subspace Emissary got harped on back in the day, but given that all of the characters get turned into trophies at one point or another during the story, I don't think anything that happened in it was meant to be taken literally. The characters are clearly still the trophies from Melee. I think in the context of the series overall, the Subspace Emissary is telling the story of an adult who feels restrained because societal norms would dictate they shouldn't be indulging in children's franchises. Beating Tabuu means the adult no longer feels bound by what others think of their hobbies. I could just be reading into it too much, but I'd like to think this was more or less the intent. It would mirror what many of the fans of the series were personally going through when each game came out, and I find it cool when a series grows with its audience.
Oh man, the next episode is gonna be insane: Majora's Mask vs. Paper Mario vs. Star Fox 64. I have a feeling Majora's Mask might win it, but the other 2 definitely have super strong aspects to them.
Turok Rage Wars, Mario 64, Doom 64, Mario Kart 64, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, & Mario Party 3 were my frequents back in the day. Nintendo... please bring Doom 64 back, it’s been trapped on that console for ages and you’re finally on good terms with Doom again. Please make it happen.
I think maybe I've figured out why I come down differently in opinion with a lot of popular opinions for N64 games thanks to this. They mentioned early on in this series that the N64 was designed for multiplayer. It had support for four players right from the start and so many games were focused on multiplayer from square one. And I think that's it: I don't play multiplayer games much. I typically play single player stuff (growing up and now) and I think it heavily biases me toward games that have strong single player support.
I'm having trouble understanding why we're discussing "time commitment" when it comes to best n64 game. We're talking playing video games here. If time commitment should be brought up at all it's that if a game is good you have no problem wasting time playing that game.

I like that Jared throws the question out "But which one is the better N64 Game?" but never actually tries to answer it himself in this series. A lot of the cast seem to ignore that this is the main point of pitting these games against each other, but often they let their Nostalgia get the better of them.
In a vacuum, I agree, this was the correct result. Diddy Kong still got a raw deal, though. Diddy might not be the best game on the N64, but it certainly deserved better than to be put down right out the gate.
Whenever they talked about smash, they were absolutely in love with it . Sound effects were iconic, how goldeen should have been magikarp etc. That speaks volumes about how it is better n64 game

I had seen all the previous videos in the last two days. And it still took me almost 20 minutes to realize that this is the Loser's Bracket. That's a testament to how good these games are.
Sigh... there's even a losers bracket and still no justice for diddy kong racing. Did the original smash get a DS remake? No. Did Mario Kart 64 specifically ever get remade? No. Diddy kong did. Now granted, Smash and Mario Kart have gotten sequels, but Diddy kong had a planned sequel called Diddy kong pilot and another called donkey kong racing, both of which were scrapped, sadly. Also in agreement here. I love Diddy Kong Racing, but I just have so many more memories of Smash Bros 64. It was always me and my buddy playing. Me using Wizard Pikachu vs Blue Kirby on either Saffron City or Sector Z.
In SSBB, my brother and I would each be a character with a reflection ability on Pokémon Stadium (OG or 2) with Pokéballs only. You each had a side that was separated by the Pokéball on the stage. If you crossed the line, then you get to hit your opponent... It was so much fun (until the disc stopped working).
I just watched 20 minutes of Madness well aware from the beginning that smash is gonna win
I'm going to be the contrarian here, and say that I didn't care much for Diddy Kong Racing. I can still sit down with MarioKart 64, and still have fun.
After some time goes by, you guys can go back to this again and call the show "Return to Madness".
Now I want to watch these guys play Smash.
Am I the only one that prefers Mario Kart 64 over Diddy Kong Racing. DKR has more content sure, but MK64 had better tracks and controls. The tracks in DKR all tended to blend together.

Not necessarily. The first three Smash games have a hidden story if you think about it.
Smash 1 - Master Hand is established by the opening as being a kid playing with his dolls.
Melee - The trophy room implies that the child is older now and, while they still enjoy the franchises of their childhood, their tastes in merchandise have refined a bit.
Brawl - The Subspace Emissary establishes that Master Hand is being imprisoned by a powerful entity known as Tabuu. Brawl came out long enough after Melee that anyone over the age of 12 when Melee came out would be considered an adult when Brawl came out. Not sure about Japan, but I know in the US, at least in the years surrounding Brawl's release, an adult openly enjoying "kid stuff" would definitely have drawn some funny looks from the general public. In other words, it was a social taboo.
The Subspace Emissary got harped on back in the day, but given that all of the characters get turned into trophies at one point or another during the story, I don't think anything that happened in it was meant to be taken literally. The characters are clearly still the trophies from Melee. I think in the context of the series overall, the Subspace Emissary is telling the story of an adult who feels restrained because societal norms would dictate they shouldn't be indulging in children's franchises. Beating Tabuu means the adult no longer feels bound by what others think of their hobbies.
I could just be reading into it too much, but I'd like to think this was more or less the intent. It would mirror what many of the fans of the series were personally going through when each game came out, and I find it cool when a series grows with its audience.

Oh man, the next episode is gonna be insane: Majora's Mask vs. Paper Mario vs. Star Fox 64. I have a feeling Majora's Mask might win it, but the other 2 definitely have super strong aspects to them.
Like in this case Smash.. the only question is who is better from those who will not pass.

I think maybe I've figured out why I come down differently in opinion with a lot of popular opinions for N64 games thanks to this. They mentioned early on in this series that the N64 was designed for multiplayer. It had support for four players right from the start and so many games were focused on multiplayer from square one. And I think that's it: I don't play multiplayer games much. I typically play single player stuff (growing up and now) and I think it heavily biases me toward games that have strong single player support.
I'm having trouble understanding why we're discussing "time commitment" when it comes to best n64 game. We're talking playing video games here. If time commitment should be brought up at all it's that if a game is good you have no problem wasting time playing that game.

I like that Jared throws the question out "But which one is the better N64 Game?" but never actually tries to answer it himself in this series. A lot of the cast seem to ignore that this is the main point of pitting these games against each other, but often they let their Nostalgia get the better of them.

In a vacuum, I agree, this was the correct result. Diddy Kong still got a raw deal, though. Diddy might not be the best game on the N64, but it certainly deserved better than to be put down right out the gate.
Whenever they talked about smash, they were absolutely in love with it . Sound effects were iconic, how goldeen should have been magikarp etc. That speaks volumes about how it is better n64 game

This one's tough for me, but I gotta go with Diddy Kong Racing. It's flatly superior to Mario Kart 64, without question. But between DKR and SSB, I think DKR just barely edges out SSB.
Mario Kart 64 multiplayer wise is better than DKR by far… If the huge part of the N64 is multiplayer you can’t mention anything without mentioning the impact of Mario Kart 64…It’s actually the best selling multiplayer game on the system
i don't understand their logic " this game is better but i would rathre go back and play this other game" WHY. if the one game is better in every way then why choose the other one over it. plus you are looking at what is the BETTER game. not the game that you feel like playing right now

I had seen all the previous videos in the last two days. And it still took me almost 20 minutes to realize that this is the Loser's Bracket. That's a testament to how good these games are.
I'm hoping Majora's mask wins the losers bracket.

Sigh... there's even a losers bracket and still no justice for diddy kong racing. Did the original smash get a DS remake? No. Did Mario Kart 64 specifically ever get remade? No. Diddy kong did. Now granted, Smash and Mario Kart have gotten sequels, but Diddy kong had a planned sequel called Diddy kong pilot and another called donkey kong racing, both of which were scrapped, sadly. Anyway, JUSTICE FOR DIDDY KONG!!
