Welcome to our new show Gamer Tiers! In this episode PBG, Shane of DidYouKnowGaming, Chadtronic and Proton Jon are ranking every Mario Kart item (except for the Double Dash supers). Whether it's Mario Kart 8: Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario Kart for the SNES, or any in between, there will be powerful arguments about item power, and whether or not they should even be in the game. There's something very endearing about Shane, who (I feel anyways) gives off a very stoic impression, consistently laughing at the "Mushroom Blasting" jokes. Love it
What I've gathered from this video is that Chad mainly races AI.

I’m kinda sad they didn’t rank the double dash character items but to be fair they haven’t appeared since double dash.
Also, I think it was a matter of how much time it took them to make this video. A few days ago Jon said that it took them like 2+ hours or so to record this video. If they had included the double dash items it would've taken significantly more.

@@harrybest2041 Yes but tour also changed most of the returning items so they now suck and aren’t useful or fun to use, along with most of the new ones also sucking and not being useful or fun to use.
yet they did rank a few items that were exclusive to Mario Kart Wii, which is annoying, i love Double Dash, could care less about Wii.
I feel like something important about the leaf that didn't get said: It stays in your item slot for its full duration and prevents you from grabbing other items, making it really clunky to get good use out of. If it was more like the fire flower, having a duration that can be altered down if need, it'd be more useful.
Such a good series, everyone brings something to the table and I think that's so cool

Here's another perk to the Lightning item. It tightens up the pack. If the 1st place person is far ahead, Bullet Bill won't matter because they are still far ahead. Tightening the pack aids not only the person that used Lightning, but everyone else's chances to come back. It keeps the race tight.
To add to this... I've been in a number of races that had me far ahead of the pack in Mario Kart 8, and that's because I never got hit by Lightning. But, in races that I do, I'm kept from running away with the race. Bullet Bill, in this case, would get you to the middle of the pack... But I'm still miles away unaffected and by the time your Bullet Bill ends, you'll be out of the area that it could be used to get you the lead. Bullet Bill is good for getting you out of last, but Lightning is good for getting you a closer to 1st. If the pack is already tight, Bullet Bill is good. But, if the pack is far apart with first place being far away from even the middle of the pack, Lightning is best. After all, since it affects everyone, it gets you closer.

I reaaally liked that the ending wasn’t just the five of them ranking the final list into a definitive tier list but instead made their own Mario kart item pool. Getting to see everyone’s general opinion of the items but not have a “definitive” tier list was an awesome way to end it!
Also, chaining item boxes was one thing I noticed they didn’t talk about at all and I feel like that’s a huge deal in Mario kart. Golden Mushroom, Bullet Bill, and Leaf are a few of the items that stays in your item slot and in a lot of scenarios leave you vulnerable after using them.
A Star at least lets you chain an item box which could let you get a mushroom, shell, or banana and at least have some security getting out of a possible bad scenario right after your power up ends. Of course this doesn’t matter in games/modes that let you have two item slots lol
the triple red is NOT a guaranteed block, it's tough but you can thread the needle
Depends on the game, I'm pretty sure DS was a gauranteed block (as far as I can recall at least), but in 8 it's relatively easy to slip between two of the shells. That being said, throwing a shell backwards at the last second almost always will defend you provided you don't get hit at a weird angle.
31:21 I'm pretty sure it was the same case in Mario Kart Ds. I honestly like them in those entries because I like to cleverly sit them where an itembox usually sits. People can easily mistaken them for a real one and hit it.

Love this series, I was binging Madness Season 1 and 4 on repeat bc I love the synergy of the people on this channel. Also something I wanted to add about 1 shell behind you being a guaranteed block you can plan every time, that's actually not true. Idk if this true for MK8, but in Mario Kart Wii, if there is someone diagonally in front of me and they are holding a green shell or banana behind them, you can throw a red shell so it hits them in the side. This is def a competitive top-tier player strat but just wanted to throw that out there. Love this series, can't wait to see more!

4:23 This is actually a really good question, i feel like it's 60% good lines, 30% good item play, 10% luck. Good lines are the first thing you need, but you can only win about half your races on good lines, you need item play or you're screwed
I agree with the feather placement but also in battle mode if you jump over someone you can: steal a balloon in balloon mode, steal coins in coin rush and steal the shine in shine thief. While also you get a boost when landing the jump. It's not very useful and it takes a lotta skill and still is really hard to use but it's more than just a dodge. Also, I would love if the item was in the main racing mode because it would allow you to make the mushroom only shortcuts as well.
I love pretty much all the normal boots content! All I'm waiting for now is Madness to come back

Interesting how high the star scored.
It personally trows me for a loop half the time.
I always know how fast my car is and I calculate off of that, I cannot calculate very good how long the star is used and what parts of the road it helps.
By the mushrooms it's simpeler, you get 1 boost of choice. Either take a shortcut or squeeze your opponent and steal their item.
That being said, great episode guys and the editing is especially awesome :D

I think for the chaos-fun 10-item board, should definitely replace the horn with something else, either the fake item box or the triple banana's. I think with a chaos-fun game mode, it's more about the journey than it is about winning, and the horn is only about winning. With traps on the track, everything becomes more hectic
seeing proton Jon again was like the boost of nostalgia I didn't know I needed , I started watching gaming content on RUclips through the runaway guys and just fell off of it and it's just nice to see he's part of normal boots now it's great 👌
Triple red actually isnt a guarantee block, although you still can use the three shells to throw them back as soon as you need to block

When it comes to driving vs item management vs luck, it is dependent on the engine caliber. At 50cc, driving skill is a solid 10% contribution to victory. Drifting is optional and you can easily turn with the track, not to mention easily go around bananas, making them useful exclusively as a defensive item. Because it takes so long to finish a race on 50cc, everyone in the back can make maximum use of their bullet bills and lightning, on top of it being easier to hit opponents with items like the red shell.
But crank it up to 200cc, and you'll find yourself flying across the track, getting too much air, and struggling to make even loose turns. This engine caliber requires the most precise and professional driving skill in order to be successful. And if you're struggling to make tight turns before, a well placed banana can really mess you up. Since you're spending less time in the race, there will be less big items being thrown about, and lightning will be less useful, since you're still going quite fast. Blooper actually matters in 200cc since it lowers handling and forces you to make wider turns often veering off the track.
Suffice to say, professional driving skills doesn't matter at all in 50cc, but is almost everything in 200cc.
I forgot how OP Mega Mushrooms were in Wii, in Tour they were nerfed hard. You were still big and can squash anyone, but it's essentially an extra hit you can tank, and no more speed boost.

You guys should do a tier list of the best team items in Mario Kart Double Dash.
I don't like the Bullet Bill, because when you use it, you're suddenly not playing the game anymore for a wee bit.
And then it drops you off at a curve sending you speeding off the course, possibly out of bounds depending on the course.
You guys should to some tier lists for Zelda items, Mario power ups and Smash Bros. Items too. I just want to see more episodes of this show lol.
I'd say it's 69% driving, 26% items, and 5% luck. You need to be a good driver to get into 1st, 2nd, or 3rd but you need good item management to either retain your 1st place spot or to move up into 1st from 2nd or 3rd. Luck can influence this as well depending on what items you get (maybe you really needed a banana to defend yourself but you got a coin) but you can defend yourself or work your way up to 1st even while being extremely unlucky.
Luv the video guys, we need to get into fighting games just the games, not the characters unless it's bosses cause some need to be discussed.

The super shroom/star. I feel like the super shroom makes you faster than the star. Plus, I remember the shroom making you invincible to blue shells while boosting (at least in the 64 version)

Yes, item management is a big deal and can make or break a race. Items are a big deal here. That's what makes Mario Kart different than other racing games. The luck of which item you get is also affective, but I think that luck affects your opponents more than you.
The Fake Item Box can still be useful in Double Dash and Wii if you can camouflage them among some real item boxes, in which case they're harder to immediately pick out from the real ones. They can also be used to blow away someone who's attempting to draft behind you in the Wii version.
I don't know if it's something the NormalBoots guys want to do, but it would be interesting to have guests on these tier list episodes. People from outside the group I mean.
Lightning is always that one item that you forget exists until it hits you, then it’s your least favorite item in the game again.

I actually respect all the tiers lists cause everyone explained themselves well also the end made me realize why can't we customize which items we want to race with? that should totally be a feature
The thing with Chad's argument is that 'if you get bullet bill after bullet bill' doesn't really work. Because you'll get a bullet bill, go up a few spots... but you aren't going to get to first by relying on Bullet Bills, because eventually you'll stop getting them as you move up the positions. It's not even a case of luck or items at that point, there is a cut-off point where you simply cannot get Bullet Bills, so they're only going to get you so far.
My views tend to match up with Jon most, although I would put the Boomerang higher than the Piranha Plant, because I feel Chad has a point about how uncontrollable it makes you. Whenever I get a Piranha Plant I just mash the button to get through it quickly, it rarely does anything good for me. I would go into more depth about the items and where I'd put them, but I doubt anyone's that interested in my opinion of them. ^^;
I will say that I have a slightly better opinion of coins than most of them. I'm not saying it's great, but it'd be low D/high F for me, because if you get hit, you can use it to help get your coin count back up. That is basically the only use for it though, and I'd rather block an attack. The whole 'prevention is better than a cure' sort of idea.
I would also say that a Blue Shell isn't as great as people like to make out a lot of the time. It does have the added benefit of, in 8, it goes along the ground. I think it does that in some other games as well, but most of my opinions are based on 8 and a little on the mobile game. So it does have a chance of hitting other people on it's way to first, but most of the time it's going to hit first, change the lead, not necessarily that great for you personally. If you're playing a team match, in Deluxe or mobile, it does get bumped up a bit because it'll go for whoever's in the lead on the other team. So it can either let one of your team get into first if someone on the other team is in first, or help the person in first if your team is in first.
That's also a difference that 8 made, rather than it being on positions, it's how far behind the leader you are. If the leader is way out in front, you can get Stars in 2nd place.
...I do not get Chad putting the Super Horn above a star though. Sure, the Super Horn can save you from a Blue Shell... but so can the Star.
As for the 10 items I'd put it... Star, Single Red, Triple Green, Triple Mushrooms, Mega Mushroom, Blue Shell, Lightning, Triple Bananas, Mega Horn... and I honestly don't know. Maybe single green shell or triple red.
Ima need to defend Bob omb and bananas real quick. Bob omb has this mechanic at least in 8 where it blows up if someone is near then rather than a timed item so it's more like a proximity bomb than a timer but if nobody is nearby it's just a time bomb. This is super helpful because if you have a ton of people behind you it will almost 100% hit the person AND if you throw it behind you you can use it defensively if an item is coming. Now for banana it's so much better than green shell because it's defensive and even with the 3 bananas you can just throw it right behind you because it's not launched so it's practically 3 confirmed blocks. If there's another item block you can throw the bananas right behind or on the block so it's hard to see and bananas last for multiple laps so it will most likely hit someone. It's such a good item that can be utilized better than the green shell.
I'm always anxious to activate the star with the lucky 7/8 because I've been blown up multiple times in Mario kart 7 from racers running into my bob-omb and making me lose everything
Triple red shell is the best item in the game. You get 3 chances to use it strategically in any way. You can save it for first place once you past second, or if you're in 3rd, hit 2nd to get past them, use one on first, and use the last one for defense. It's also fun to use, which items like star, while good, it's not that fun to use. It's just for protection and a slight speed boost. Also, triple reds is still useful in the back to pass people ahead of you. There's no downside to this item. Except running into it after you throw it because you're boosting too quickly.
Hot take, I think my favorite MK item is Bananas. I like the chaos of putting landmines around and making things more treacherous. I wouldn't put them S tier (Probably B) for usage, but I love them all the same.

I like piranha plant more than they did, and I think I'd take 3 bananas over 3 greens, but this was a good list.
Piranha plant is just a lite version of the Golden mushroom, you can spam it to get mini boosts, but wont help off-road

They didn’t mention that- in favor of driving being the most important aspect- when you are in first you aren’t getting good items anyway. The better items are for people in lower places. Which is exactly the point. They’re supposed to AID you. But if you are a really good player you can stay in 1st for virtually the entire level and get only bananas the whole time! The items won’t matter if you are really good at maneuvering and know the courses well.
I’m speaking from experience of course.
I love this series so far! The discussions have been fun and the thought process behind every decision is real interesting too.

The boo has literally been my FAVORITE ITEM! The temporary invincibly from DS is the best way to keep place and I almost always get triple red shells from it.

I would argue that item usage skill is part of driving, not necessarily the item itself (obviously BB removes the driving element, but there are some very few locations where BB breaks and doesn't work properly) and I guess your view on where that would apply would heavily influence your percentages. I put 70% driving, 20% luck and 10% items. I also put luck higher than items, due to item acquisition being rng.
