I'm glad to have been on my first, and thanks to my list, probably last, episode of Gamer Tiers. Thanks for having me!
You had the best list by far! Speak truth to power about 64 being really outdated by modern standards!
All of your opinions here are correct Jon
Shut up and kiss me Jon
My dude Jon I kinda agree with your opinion don’t mind the nostalgia nerds
Here's hoping you're invited back many more times, you did very well
This format is like the best format I’ve seen on RUclips for a discussion type show. So freaking good.
Agreed
I can’t believe that normal boots back I love it
Peeps the boomer lol
Surprised I haven't seen more of these kinds of videos before. Group tier list debates. Always fun to hear these kinds of things.
I mean they nailed it with the Madness style discussions in the past, those were awesome. This is sorta modernized to the tier list trend and it’s ALMOST as good. Certainly enjoyed the format.
PBG in this episode is the epitome of "Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make."
"I PAID $60, LET ME LOOK AT THE VOID!!"
The best argument of this whole thing. Dudes right he paid let em look. Screw it I paid too I wanna see the void now lol.
Giving that game camera controls would result in the already heated multiplayer turn into a cold war where everyone agrees not to move the camera.
@@Spider_Mike023 It still sounds a little defensive.
I think it should be renamed to "Gamer Tears", because I suppose the cast is gonna have many of those while starting to hate each other xD
thats the point, the intro animation even has "tiers" made of tears
this show is S tier
I’m the first one here lol good job on the work haha
you're S tier ;_;
Just like Mario Galaxy! :)
Congrats for your invitation!!! 🥳🥳🥳
@@itsjustr0wan yes
Its a bit weird that Shane considers the complaint about 64's camera "overblown" when he has an issue with 3D Worlds lack of a camera
Lol he has a huge hypocrite thing going on lol
I think it's fair to criticize a lot of Shane's opinions in this video. This one is entirely consistent, though. He likes cameras in 3d games, no matter the quality.
Shane: "Serious nostalgia from Galaxy fans."
Also Shane: SM64 S tier
10:53
"Long Story" is understatement of the year
I mean it can be summed up in a single word, "Bigger"
But God damn we love it! XD
PBG saying "I've never died because of the camera" HOW?? Playing Mario 64 for the first time this year that was literally the cause of most of my deaths
Probably because when you're a dumb kid, you make millions of mistakes on the first level and become much more familiar with a game's jank. If you come into Mario 64 with platforming experience already, the game's jank will stand out much more as you don't make platforming mistakes or combat mistakes, only camera mistakes.
It also doesn’t help in 3D All Stars where it seems to be worse than the original
I never had a problem compensating with the analog stick as I just got good at nonlinear jumps but I am not as good at that now so I would have more of a problem with it if I play Mario 64.
@@joeytaylor1021 why is 3D all stars worse than the original
@@cunar1006 my theory is the game not being wide screened in 3D All Stars.
I'm not one to get annoyed about stuff, but Shane having 64 in S tier and saying that Galaxy has too much nostalgia around it...
Also claiming that the Wii sucks!!!!! The motion controls are amazingly implemented!
Galaxy’s motion controls were so simple and intuitive. Picking up star bits without having to run over to them felt great and the little flick-to-spin mechanic is so minor I don’t know how they could hate it so much. Eat your heart out, Nerrel.
When it comes to Galaxy's motion controls, I would agree with you except for the spin move. A dumb waggle move that could just as easy be performed with a button press is awkward and doesn't out the wiimote to good use
Obviously you cant take a joke
Wow! Really preferred Proto Jon take, I actually liked his positive attitude towards the games 😂
The story of Galaxy is something more Mario games desperately need, try to change my mind.
I never finished Galaxy 2 because the way the story pretends the first game never happened annoyed me so much.
@@Stevoisiak What's ironic about that, is the original story during development was gonna about how Lubba met Rosalina, and continued the story from Galaxy's secret ending.
@@wantedasylum1091 who said that and where did they say it?
@@ozark5247 They didn't, I said it.
@@wantedasylum1091 oh I meant like the source lol. My bad
The galaxy hate Really shocked me lmao
same like most people would rate is as an S tier
If this shocked you, then whatever you do, don't look up "Is Mario Galaxy a Good Mario Game? | HOW ABOUT?"
Worst mistake of my life
@@Markiplier2 oh I know that video Very well. It’s a funny video, but I disagree almost entirely with Barry’s claims
Probably the best Mario games from an audio-visual perspective and the level design is great, I just don't have as much fun controlling Mario in them compared to the rest of the series. Which becomes more apparent the more I replay all of them.
@@sand-attack It also has the opposite of inertia, which is called "out-ertia" (don't check the dictionary for that one). I actually like it because it encourages the player to take their time and bask in the atmosphere (or LACK THEREOF HA HA HAAAAA), but I understand why it's annoying if you want to get on with the game (especially if you're a speedrunner).
Watch "The Quiet Sadness of Super Mario Galaxy" if you want a better explanation.
The vibe is immaculate, only thing I would add are more clear dividers between the sections. Like title cards announcing each game(s) being discussed.
Agreed. Chapters (or whatever RUclips calls them) would be very useful.
The problem is... They would and did mix talking about other games while discussing that one game. I mean, look at the discussion of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. During that time, they also talked about Sunshine some more and Odyssey.
The camera for sm64 is like being connected to wi-fi but with no internet
Or being connected to Nintendo’s online service.
@@nicegoatdoctor8224 hahahahaha yh
Everyone expressing they thought Odyssey should reset the level more is such a bizarre wish for me because that's the type of mechanic that only works in the previous games because of how the exploration works. You *can* do things out of sequence in 64 but the game was designed so that you would go in, commit to the goal of one star while the world was configured for that star to be the goal, then leave. But Odyssey is so dense and you're meant to keep going. Having Odyssey reset on moon pick ups frequently would KILL the momentum and break the world design. Both of these options work in their own individual games but wouldn't translate to the other super well
Their idea is that there be more multi-moons and fewer regular moons. In that way it would be balanced more like Sunshine where multi-moons are shine sprites, and moons are blue coins.
I sort of agree and disagree. I love the idea of not being booted out of a level every single time you collect the major collectible, but the way Odyssey implemented the moons by having every level so jam packed with them in such a massive range of challenge levels definitely dampened the feeling of accomplishment and progression in the game. Which sucks, because there are plenty of moons that are just as challenging as any of the stars or shinesprites of previous titles, and some even moreso, but the impact of that accomplishment is lessened by the fact you likely collected 5 or more just getting there. I would've loved if there were more multimoons, or something similar, that actually felt different and more accomplishing compared to the the regular moons, while having less moons in general. Maybe doesn't even always have to boot you out with the multimoon, but it should have some more visible accomplishment. Maybe like a shortcut to other areas, or access to entirely new areas.
All that said? I still think Odyssey is one of the best Mario games to date purely on the fact that moving around and traversing the levels is just so damn fun and intuitive that practically anyone can pull off some simple maneuvers that feel amazing to pull off, but the skill ceiling is so high that players are incentivised to try absurd maneuvers to get around stages in ways that even the developers may not have considered. Which is just... *chefs kiss*
I just think Odyssey clearly has the building blocks for an even better game by refining their ideas and experiments into something even greater, a la Galaxy 1 to 2, and Nintendo would be missing a huge opportunity if they weren't actually doing anything with that.
For the final tier list I think it would be cool if you averaged out everyone's list and see where they end up
Agreed, at least as an initial baseline to lead them into further discussion on how to adjust it
S - Mario 64 (4.5), Odyssey (4.5)
A - Galaxy 2 (4.0)
B - Sunshine (3.5), 64 DS (3.25), Galaxy 1 (3.0)
C - 3D World (2.5)
D -
F - 3D Land (1.25)
As a second comment now that I've finished the video, don't feel the need to try and contain the chaos of this! I throughly enjoyed hearing these guys hash it out like this! It was allot of fun! Especially because, on every game, I was able to find someone that I agreed with in the mess! It was NEVER the same person, but I could still find someone! But really, it was just allot of fun to watch. I can't wait for episode 2!
Agreed
This
So we're not gonna talk about how Jon still has the RosaJon nails? XD
Did no one else realize that they didn’t include Bowser’s Fury????
@@monkeykingw I would've agreed with that if Jon didn't have his nails painted (which you can see in several shots such as at 28:24) and his face shaved, which he needed for his cosplay he did very recently.
Sad
I’d have Bowser’s Fury pretty high up, it’s short, but so great.
@@fredfredb What were you replying to?
@@nicolasroy8481 Someone previously commented that the reason they didn't include Bowser's Fury in the video was probably because it was recorded far in advance, and then I replied with what I wrote there.
There are so many points in here where Todd sounds like a therapist for everybody
Todd: “So Shane, how does the motion controls make you feel?”
Shane saying "Odyssey just hasn't had as much time to ~stew~ as the other games" just proves his list is basically just nostalgia
While nostalgia would inevitably play in role in each person's list, there are a few things that time can help reveal.
First, there's the allure that new things have. New environments, controls, characters, mechanics, can all be more awe-inspiring the first time you see them. Coming back once you're familiar with them can help you determine if they actually look good/are clever or if you just got caught up in the new shiny game.
Next, there's replayability. Some games start very slow or have very empty areas to let the player learn the controls the first time they play, that on subsequent playthroughs just feel like an area devoid of content. Some games also give players so much control that you can blast past the early challenges if you know what you're doing, making the early game even more fun on your second playthrough. Maybe the cast here hasn't replayed the game, so they would feel like their impression would be colored by how quickly they understood what the game was demanding of them.
Also there are game design decisions that can really change a person's view long after they've played the game. It wasn't until long after I beat Mario Sunshine when I learned what the requirements are for unlocking the final level were, and learning that the blue coins and Delfino sub areas were all useless outside of 100% completion definitely took the wind out of them, even if they were fun for my first couple playthroughs. Maybe Odyssey has some decisions that could sway peoples' opinions once someone points it out, otherwise it will successfully withstand the test of time.
@@pikmints Personally I Never replay a game as it will never match the feeling of the first playthrough. I simply remember it as it was and move on to something else instead of continuously seeing what I already have.
@@pikmints A thing that really killed my love for odyssey for quite a while was that imo, it's painful to 100% it. The 100s of shopping moons you can get after beating the story was a terrible addition and the millions of outfits are a bit excessive. New outfits are a cool concept but I just think they added too many for true 100% to be fun.
I'm starting to love the game again cause I have interest in speedruns, but I'm prolly never 100%ing it ever again
It's a shame that Austin is the only person in NormalBoots that can move his arm more than 5 inches to shake a controller.
You don’t even have to shake your arm much, it’s mostly your wrist.
@Connor B_THATNERDYGUY Makes it funny, though. Wonder what they think of Skyward Sword?
@@Markiplier2 I do hope we get a 3D Zelda tier list next. OOT and SS are always controversial topics.
@@jamieyakimets839 Oh, definitely. Had a "nice, friendly discussion" with someone about Skyward Sword in which they told me that they'd murder any friend or family member who liked Skyward Sword.
Thanks to their phenomenal use of persuasive language and plentiful laughing-crying emojis, my eyes have been opened to how wrong I was about liking the game. (SLASH ESS (that means sarcasm or whtever that means lol idk)))
It's not hard to do. It's just dumb.
"A mario game needs to be difficult"
"It forces you to do the hard levels"
Ahh, gotta love the chaos.
I have to say, I'm pretty much on Jon's side the entire time.
Man, Chadtronic and ProtonJon is a combo I never even thought would be a thing, but god I love it.
Not the galaxy slander. It’s my favorite game of all time 😔✌🏻
This episode was fire! It's like Madness except with an impartial observer to keep everything on the rails.
I think having someone that knows the gist of everyone's opinions before recording is a genius idea. It helps keep the conversations from derailing on disagreements since the moderator can see them coming and help ease people into it.
Normal boots is back, a gift from god.
Also don't know if this is new but all episodes of madness are back thank you.
"it takes Mario longer to hit the ground" its like he's in space or something
This is the first time in over ten years of watching Jon that I have seen him argue in favor of a game's limited camera. He's normally as vocal about that as he is about motion controls.
Todd is doing an amazing job at directing this, even though it's the pilot episode!
I played Super Mario 64 on the ds for the first time a few years ago and the game still holds up and I also played the N64 version for the first time just a few months ago and that might even hold up better because of the amazing controls! My point is that the game is still fun today without having any nostalgia for it!
Love that Normal Boots is back! This video was great and look forward to more! That said, y'all did 3D World dirty...
They didn't even consider Bowser's Fury.
They're just getting old.
And I'm saying that as someone older than all of them.
I genuinely think that they recorded this before Bowser's Fury came out, possibly before it was even announced. It lines up with the way that they talk about multiplayer too, PBG and Jon have to justify why they played multiplayer, because it was way harder for them to back when you had to do local multiplayer on the Wii U than online with the Switch.
@@carolinfardal nah, this was really recent. They mentioned Mario dying a few months ago, and also Jon was clean shaven and with nail polish, because he had to cosplay RosaJon for TRG Colosseum (in fact, I think Jon mentioned in one of his streams that this was recorded like one day after Colosseum, or something like that? Can't remember the details)
Todd putting in so much work as mediator lmao
What makes Galaxy so great isn’t really just the gameplay. That’s good and all, but the environment around it is what pushes it above all others for me. The memorable worlds, the amazing music, and things like the hub world just make it so much more interesting than something like the old 2D style stage selection from galaxy 2.
More interesting doesn’t mean better. Galaxy 1’s hub was empty and was basically a level select with extra steps. ‘But it’s charming and atmospheric -‘ yeah yeah, I get it. But mechanically at least, 2’s is more efficient and therefore superior from a gameplay standpoint.
The Galaxy hate is actually mind-blowing. I rented 3D All Stars from Gamefly recently after not having played any of them in years, and Galaxy was the only one that didn't have me pulling my hair out because the controls were so finicky. Also Galaxy has one of the best soundtracks in any game, by far my favorite Mario soundtrack.
True, Galaxy is amazing! I understand people not enjoying motion controls but c'mon was pointing at the screen once in a while and shaking the Wii remote really that Annoying?
@@HenryS136 it was unfortunate that such a great game had to adapt to the inclusion of motion controls, but I feel like the galaxy games are some of the few wii games that aren’t hindered by motion controls at all
C’mon bro say it! They’re VERY nostalgic for N64 games. They can’t look past their prime. They favor 64 games in almost all of their ranking videos, to the point where I can never take their opinions seriously. Those games were fantastic FOR THEIR TIME but right now, Galaxy is EASILY better than 64 and Sunshine. Hell almost every 3D Mario after Galaxy is better than 64 and Sunshine.
@@TheJmack90
They whine about motion controls, but gave the DS dpad a free pass.
Yeah, they did a terrible job of adjusting for bias.
Especially since the muppets had nothing - at all - to say about Bowser's Fury.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 RIGHT! Like bro, the motion controls are REALLY basic. The most complex it gets are the rolling ball and manta ray surfing stages…which are like 4 stages out of 100+. I get that it was “cool” to hate on motion controls, but they weren’t inherently bad. Just the games that demanded preciseness.
Without the 3DS circle pad, Mario 64 DS is unplayable.
They barely mentioned Bowser’s Fury yo. The original game is like low A Tier. But Bowser’s Fury pushes it into the S Tier.
I'm in complete agreement with Austin with how the tiers should work.
“Galaxy isn’t that good”
Sorry I don’t speak wrong
In regards to Sunshines theme... it has more the one theme to it.
Like sure it's all in the tropics, but there's more to it then that.
Theres a hotel level, a harbor level, an amusement park, a jungle village, a normal village, a waterfall level, etcetera.
Theming is more then the setting.
It's definitely not just "beach"
Not when more than half of the stages have barely any sand (and even then Sirena Beach is almost entirely inside the hotel)
Never seen Jon's content before but the fact that he puts Mario 64 at the bottom? That alone makes me want to go watch his content and sub his channel.
We do not accept the Galaxy slander.
Jon's list is almost identical to mine, except I'd put Sunshine higher and 64 DS lower.
I felt so much frustration on his behalf when some of the others made really poor arguments against his choices lol.
Curious what they all think of Bowser's Fury, would have been an interesting discussion.
30:54 had me cracking up for 10 minutes
"Mario Galaxy isn't that good-"
i can kinda agree, maybe not so strongly but it has downsides that it's upsides do nothing to fix
"-because the wii motion controls are bad and omnipresent"
never mind we've lost the lead
That was extremely strong for a test run. all the guys meshed well together and overall the conversation was a good blend of actual game mechanic + game = fun(like game dev talk and just regular players). sounded like it was a blast to record and Todd seemed to do a good job at keepin' those wild boys in check.
I feel pain everytime I hear "Mario Galaxy isn't that great."

@@nicegoatdoctor8224 I can see where you're coming from and while I love the extra features, the lack of analog control kills it for me personally.
I agree with PBG, I always found it super satisfying to spin with Mario in Galaxy using motion controls
Mario 64 is so heavily overshadowed by Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie it isn’t even funny
Everyone uploading mario videos at the same time was a pleasant surprise on its own, this is more than heart-warming
Glad you guys are back and doing things together again! I love the Madness feel of this, while still maintaining its own identity. Can't wait for more of this and Hardcore!!

This was really good. What I would recommend is that maybe in future you could put a link to the Tier List in the description so we can make our own Tiers and sort of play along.
I like how the title of the show sounds like "Gamer Tears" as well
They knew what they were doing, and I love it.
This was absolute chaos and I love this cast so much.

I love all this chaos of this first episode, can we get more chaos from the next episode to tier list.
If this is any indication of whats to come.. madness is gonna be lit...
I’m so glad to see y’all back! My only critiques are tighten up the editing, and the “throwback” sections come across a little strange. Took me a minute to understand the context they were speaking from. Either way, very happy to see all of you back!
This is a great first episode! I really like the throwbacks in particular. It's neat to see (what I assume to be) the participants' thoughts from before the conversation.
Great show. I really like the format and editing. Todd does a great job. I was hoping to see all three new members but Lady Pelvic was missing. I only know Chadtronic. The others are completely new to me.
I truly loved this. Seriously. Hearing about opinions and people's perspectives are my favorite things. I learned about things, agreed, disagreed, and I would seriously LOVE to see another one. Also, this group of people is amazing and just great to watch🤣
The biggest irony in this video is that the people who hated 3D land's camera defended 64's camera.
That was alot of fun I enjoyed the debates and discussions. The their list and questions were a great way to keep it loving. Bravo.
Love the AA music in the background. Keep it!
I love the Madness vibes here!
This was an incredible show and a great idea! Looking forward to hopefully seeing more of these in the future!
Glad you guys are back! love the new show and can't wait to see more episodes!
I lost it at the “looking at the void” bit.
I felt that the Mario 64 bias here was a little ridiculous. As a fresh player who spent about 30 hours with it I really had to force myself to play it. Without nostalgia, I can really see how the game has aged poorly. You can't put a game at the top of a tier list based purely on its legacy and what it was during its own time. This list is weighing 3D Mario's as they can stand on their own and Super Mario 64 is sluggish in its pacing with the boot out system, it's hard to control, it doesn't look very good anymore, and there's not a whole lotta variation in gameplay when compared to most of the other games in the series. This is just my take but I'd love to see some younger takes in these videos, maybe with some up-and-comers who don't have the same rose-tinted glasses.
It seems that a lot of people like to mention nostalgia bias when it comes to Mario 64 but fail to mention recency bias with Odyssey. Just my observation.
@@derekrequiem4359 Super Mario Odyssey isn’t a masterpiece. It has flaws, it has pacing issues, and the difficulty to reward balancing is really weak. But it’s still a better game than 64. It experiments with Mario and intermingled ideas in very fresh ways. It looks better, controls better, and is more fun than 64. That’s not recency bias cause I played Sunshine, 64, and Galaxy 2 for the first time after Odyssey. Honestly I’m not sure which I’d rank higher between Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and Odyssey but I can say I enjoyed them all better than 64. Although I do agree with you that people have been throwing “masterpiece” around way to much with recent switch games like Odyssey and Breath of the Wild.
After playing 3D All-Stars, Mario 64 controls better than Sunshine or Galaxy. Odyssey takes the cake obviously
@@sand-attack I respect your opinion, but it is in my opinion that your opinion is a stupid opinion.
@@nicegoatdoctor8224 lol wow. sunshine is close it's just too jittery, they messed up the side flip by making the animation trigger from a dead stop. and then removed the long jump for some reason, not sure what the thought process was there
Love this series already. Glad to see normal boots back. Love all of you
Am I the only one who thinks Galaxy's levels have more in common w/ 3D Land/World than 64/Sunshine? I remember the vast majority of the levels being more like linear obstacle courses (w/ stars instead of flag poles at the end) rather than open areas to explore w/ cryptic puzzles to solve on a star scavenger hunt.
Love the show and concept btw.
ngl i love this, as much as i love hardcore, i love this so much, one of my favorite youtube videos of all time
So if Proton Jon is part of Normal Boots now, does that mean Chuggaaconroy might join at some point?

If Emile does join, he needs to have a pun off with Chad.

I love the editing, the format for the show is great, and the debate was really entertaining. Such a strong intro to Gamer Tiers.
This is a great pilot episode, excited to see what else you guys put out
it bums me out that people struggle to view mario 64 objectively, i love the game to death but it hasn't aged amazingly well, that doesn't make it a bad game at all, just a product of its time that if viewed critically today would not be a 10/10
I do enjoy that the throwbacks make it feel something like a reality show 😅 it’s weird but I dig it
I would already watch like 10 episodes of this, but those Throwback questions really make this stand out. Can't wait to see more!

@@nicegoatdoctor8224 sorry, but that’s how I feel. Saying galaxy 1 is better just seems a little dishonest to me in the face of 2’s improvements imo
@@callinater6133
Galaxy 2 just is so underwhelming to me. The lack of the atmospheric loneliness of space that the first game had in spades. The lack in the story. The lack in more sandboxy levels, Galaxy one had honeyhive, beach bowl ect. But Galaxy 2 only had 1 level that was like that. And also the lack of any kind of big hub world. Sure in the pure gameplay department it beats 1, 1 being piss easy and 2 actually having some challenge, but it just isn't as much as an experience as 1 and that's what makes me love 1 so much more.
But the Galaxy 1 vs 2 debate is an interesting way of seeing which kind of things you value more in games, gameplay, or it being an experience.
PBG had the best takes about Super Mario Galaxy 1, hands down. Sometimes I truly do feel like I'm the only person who finds the motion controls fun and intuitive lol
this is a really fantastic pilot. incredible editing and better cast! only hope I have for future episodes is kinda an agreed consensus beforehand on what the tiering is based on and more willingness to fight for their beliefs from each of the cast. overall though if nothing changes this will still probably be the thing I look forward to more than anything else on youtube
This is the chaos I expected from this type of series. I thoroughly enjoyed the arguments and reactions to each other's tier list
Playing Mario 64 on Switch last year really wasn't enjoyable for me. The first few stages were magical, but when it tries to make you do more precise platforming it just stops being fun.
The Switch analog stick struggles to handle the really delicate motions. Stealth sections were so annoying that I just intentionally wake up the piranha plants, which I never did on N64.
The switch control must be really bad because Mario 64 has always been Very easy for me on the n64
I'm gonna put my list in the comments before I watch and check how they compare :)
S: Sunshine, 3d land, 3d world
A:Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2
B:Super Mario Odyssey
C: Super mario 64
Never played: 64 DS
Welp, that was interesting.
I feel I should mention this list is based on fun first, innovation second. 3D land didnt do much new, but had the perfect level of bite sized fun. I do feel the best 3d Mario is sunshine, but my favorite is 3d land.
I’m so glad to see this change with new content. Madness is one of my favorites things to watch on RUclips every so often so I can’t wait to see some exciting new seasons
LOVE this concept with everyone debating and creating their tiers. Really fun, friendly discussion :)
