Borderlands is a new movie adaptation of the semi-popular video game franchise. And it's pretty bad. It debuted with 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and it also became a massive flop. Even people who worked on it wanted to remove their names from it. So if the movie has exciting stuff constantly happening, why is it boring and bad? Because it fails at some of the most basic aspects of screenwriting.

After watching this video it seems like Kalki 2898 AD (2024) is the fixed & infinitely better version of Borderlands (2024), give it a try 🙏🏻

This video should have been titled "How To Fail At Guardians Of The Galaxy."
Oh! Could you do shows like Arcane on how to do a perfect game adaptation or the legend of Vox Machina and how it executes things better than D&D Honor Among Thieves.
I’m still betting on Arcane videos (About Jinx and why Season 2 works where BvS don’t). Because… Let’s be honest, it’s far better than this movie. *If I can call it a movie*
(One of) the problems with this movie is that to understand anything about what is going on, you need to know the Borderlands universe, at least somewhat, for it to make any semblance of sense. BUT, if you know the Borderlands universe, the movie is so disrespectful to the source material that it's probably worse than not knowing why things are happening.
This movie is for the kid who like borderlands, he hasn't actually played it before or knows much if any of the lore, but he likes the platonic concept of it
@@bestaround3323so fucking true man my childhood game
I wish it had been picked up by Amazon or Hulu and made to series like fallout. It could have built the world and story so much better.
Which is also sad because visually, I wasn't unhappy with it. The over saturated kid colors and kind of hookey looking outfits fit the image of Pandora and BL well
Well yes, I mean when is this movie even taking place?, because it seems like lilith aged like 30 years since the last game
I know it was just a transition into an ad, but the idea of the villain using Lilith’s data against her actually sounds better then what they did in the movie
I didn't even realize it was an ad at first
@@ghosty2616 LITERALLY I JUST THOUGHT ITS BECAUSE IM BAKED 😭
I only realized it’s an ad because they also sponsor him
just show how shallow the writing ended up being
Dude wrote an ad directly into his script and it came out better than the script of the movie he's dismantling. Astounding.
So, the impression I have is:
A) If you haven't played the games, there is no point watching the movie as it just makes no sense due to lack of context.
B) If you have played the games, there is no point watching the movie, as the writers hated the game and rewrote pretty much everything to the point where the context is now irrelevant while also insulting the very thing that drew you in to watch the movie in the first place.
accurate
It's so insane to me how these people have hundreds of millions to spend and every example of nerd story adaptations to look over and still don't learn the number 1 rule of adapting nerdy shit. Follow and respect the fucking source material. This movie has writing issues in general too, but god damn. Look how successful the fallout series was. their liberties were acceptable because everything else was fine enough, and they aren't piggy backing off of popular characters which means they have the freedom to write within the bounds of hte universe
You know how many great stories there are to tell within pandora? but now this series is dead in cinema for 10+ years because yet another tream of writers hates the source material and thinks they can get away with disrespecting their primary demographic
C) Some of the most ridiculous casting decisions E.V.A.R.
Thankfully you’re not Midnight’s Edge who decided this movie failed because of girl bosses.
@@madDdog67 not at all. kevin florian and jack were literally the best parts of the movie, the 3 people had the most issue with in casting
When Roland (Kevin Hart) said "It turns out the real Borders were the lands we made along the way", I stood up in the theater and clapped.

and then he bordered all over those guys
This is BORDERline insane!!! I love it!!!
Was Lillith's mom researching spiders in the Borderlands before she died?

3:52 This just made me realize they could have taken an iconic gimmick from the games and introduced the characters with title cards, giving us a general idea of who the character is/what they're there for.
DUDE ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS RECREATE THE OG OPENING AND PEOPLE WOULD HAVE FUCKING LOVED IT.
Dude, no. We’re not repeating the mistakes of the og sewerslide squad (I hate you RUclips for making me type that)
@@person3105a mistake of one movie wouldn't be one of the other. This is a video game adaptation so taking from the source material would not be bad ever.
@@person3105The only reason that failed for suicide squad was because it was random and had no correlation to the source material.
Borderlands wouldn't have that issue.
@sethkappaccilli9509 aint no rest for the wicked. Probably one of the few intros in a game I would watch everytime I started the game.
I was expecting you to title it “how to fail at Guardians of the Galaxy” given how clearly this movie wants to be that.
Wanna be James Gunn so bad.
I mean to an extent it’s hard to blame them, but if they’re gonna play copycat they need to do a hell of a lot better than this.

My favorite part is when they're in the mine and they start arguing about how they're ever going to find the key down there just so Lilith can walk 10 feet and immediately find it in the first place she looks
Writers' strike is hurting Hollywood a lot more than they're aware of. This movie makes it clear that no amount of budget spent on actors and special effects can overcome a lack of writing and direction.
feels like everyone that isnt the tippy top of the hollywood hierarchy knows that it’s sucks rn i see ppl in the industry on tiktok saying the same for the last year
It's almost like the writers producing good stories are what actually makes Hollywood money and not the actors. Maybe they really should be paid a tincy bit more...
If only hollywood gave young new no name actors a chance... without them needing to perform favors for directors and executives too
Like Alien Romulus?
Would have done a much better job, at least they would know they had to actually earn it.
Well they do. They just give them the crappiest scripts possible. Like in the Rings of Prime.
Because Kevin Hart wants to be everywhere and we’re not here for it? If we don’t see him it’s the damn Rock 😑
There is no young talent in Hollywood. No writers, no directors, no actors. That is why they are recycling the ageing stars of the past and turning to AI.
The sad part is Borderlands should have been a no-brainer to write as it is literally just Kelly's Heroes on Mad Max world...that's it. You take a ragtag bunch of oddballs and get them together to do a heist on a planet full of crazies and monsters.
"You take a ragtag bunch of oddballs and get them together to do a heist on a planet full of crazies and monsters."
Thats why games have stupid plot holes in scenarios.
@@Dar1usz Most video game plots suck. That's okay as games are about the gameplay loop a great story is extra. Movies don't have that as a priority so the writers HAVE to make changes to the story so it can be adaptable.
@@millerrepin4452 You don't really have to change the story. Games are about the unique aspect of their medium (player interaction/gameplay), so movies can do the same thing. Make them audio/visual spectacles. As shitty as that sounds, the actors have to be able to carry it on top of that. The drama has to be dramatic, the comedy has to be comedic.
And the one thing that should be a basic, no brainer for the industry that most of the major blockbusters seem to miss on, is the actual cinematography.
Too many studios just put a camera on a tripod or a track and call it a day. The camera should be the one of the most important characters in a film.
I promise you a Borderlands with the same plot, good/fitting actors, and attention to the thematic details of the materials would have done better.
Wait a minute...that's just the D&D movie...
@cfri9332 the plot doesn't have to change but if you had to brake down borderlands story it would be too short and have too many off branching storylines and quests that don't pay off. Games can be played for 60+ hours movies get two. The story and especially characters need changes to make a cohesive story. You are on point about camera work though. Highly underappreciated.
@@millerrepin4452
Games often have shit plot except for movie games.
Games also have great character.
Dark souls has no story. It never had. It has lore.
Take a games lore. Take a games character. Take the plot, treat it as a first draft general idea.
If the character have no drama between them, create new character to add to this drama.
Game character don't necessarily have contradicting view point, so two allies can be useless from a movie script writting pov since they won't create drama.
I've said it a million times, if you're going to adapt something you have two choices: 1) stick very loyally to the original material (The Last of Us) or 2) tell your own original story with your own characters, but make sure you don't contradict existing lore on the fluff stuff (Fallout).
Every time they try to leverage existing characters/stories while "doing our own own thing" it devolves into a mess because you end up pleasing nobody. Cowboy Bebop, Halo and now Borderlands. Weird blends of the original thing but with massive alterations that are not improvements on the characters or stories.
No no no. Halo has its own separate timeline duh. But its up to you to figure out what even is in their timeline.
Great writing design to not confuse nor annoy anybody
You can also make it the Twisted Metal way. All stuff the fans recognize and know in a new light and story worked really well there without making it an insult.
Needles/Sweet Tooth is a perfect mix of all his versions in the show and he is the best part of the whole thing (followed by twister and John doe)
What about Sonic?
Totally original timeline, but with an understanding for the characters, even with their altered backstories.
Listening to the fans. Respecting them. That's the key.
And now Minecraft
@@calemrI agree. The only thing you need is actually UNDERSTANDING the source material. The rest are just techniques.
The worst thing about that adaptation is that it straight up ruined all the story beats that are in the game. The Tina back story is actually touching in the game. The soldier sacrifice scene is heart breaking, Lilith's motives make sense. Also wtf Tina needs to open the vault and die? That's just random.
I still don't understand how Claptrap gets blasted with a literal ton of ammo.
Doesn't have bullet holes.
Zero actual damage to his systems.
And then...poops out the bullets.
Like....is this a cartoon? Is this f*cking Looney Tunes or something?
You did'nt watch the movie right? They actually showed all of it. Clap peeled like a cobra to get rid of all bullet holes. At the first meet of Clap and Lilith. She shot him multiple times and he explained, he's hard to damage. At the end, this was the reason Lilith brought him up as a distraction.
The film might be shit, but the game, movie, the whole ip is a shit looney cartoon
@@KaneA87 and thats what makes the game so fucking good.,
Easiest change to Liliths intro would've been for her to decline the job, then have payment for her expensive drink denied, then immediately turn around and accept the job.
Establishing that she lives an adventurers lifestyle, and spends like one as well.
Which even tracks with the games, because you would drop every single ounce of wealth you had if you found a slightly better gun in a vending machine.
It pays for itself as long as you go out and shoot it.
In the games Lilith the Siren wasn't even a bounty hunter, for crying out loud.
It was hinted that the-man-who-became-Krieg (who can no longer remember his own name) used to be a bounty hunter on the planet Hera before a job took him to Pandora where he was captured by Hyperion Corp and chucked into human experiments that turned him insane, mutated his body and gave him Eridium-slag-based superpowers and a split personality.
You BUY EQUIPMENT in videogames? I usually just hoard everything around "in case I might need it later" and stick with the first slingshot in the game until it's too late to try an actual loadout. What's the meaning of this?!
@@LorenzoCassaroleveled equipment will eat you alive man
@@LorenzoCassaro level 1 gun versus level 72 enemies doesn't work so great
@@LorenzoCassaro yeah, that don't work in Borderlands games. Usually the best stuff came from boss fights but on occasion you'll find some sweet weapon in the vending machines. It's been a while since I played but one that comes to mind is the Double-Shot Unkempt Herald. A pistol that shoots a burst of 6 shots from one round and is doubled with the "Double-Shot" adjective. It was a beast in certain situations.
The fucked up part of this is that Hollywood pundits will look at this and go, "See? We've been saying for years that video game movies are a bad idea...", to which I will ALWAYS say, "Yeah, if you completely ignore and disrespect the source material...." You actually have to try to fuck it up when there is so much that can be referenced. They should have used that overinflated budget to hire people who actually fit the roles and give the characters more depth than cliche one liners and fart/piss jokes from "A-Listers".
It's funny because I always hear/see "video game movies are a bad idea" from the purists ranting about respecting the source material.
To me, writing/telling a good story goes beyond source material, it's not entirely dependent on that nor is it an excuse regardless of whether it works or not.
@@DGenerationMC Once upon a time, comic-based movies were a bad idea. The fact that so many great ones have been made since X-Men proves you're right 100%. It's lazy hacks who half-ass things the ones that ruin it for everybody.
They could have followed the game plots closer and stretch out the story with a mini series or something on a streaming service. The video game story is perfectly usable
It should have never been a movie anyways.

Jack black is shit. I would be elated if I never saw him again.
Honestly? It doesn’t look that bad.
The sheep looks terrible, but the creeper looks perfect.
Time will tell of course. But for a movie aimed at young kids its probably good enough.
At least a part of me is convinced the sheep is an attempt to pull the same stunt as the Sonic movie
@@daanstrik4293 This is a L take
You should have listen to the Morgan Freeman narration instead („he did in fact not learn his lesson“).
Thankfully I avoid all jack black movies.
When claptrap said "I'm sick and tired of all these borders on all these lands" I knew this would be a movie of all time
Roland actually had a cool backstory too. He found out his superior officer was stealing money from the corporation and going to blame it on him and his squad. The superior officer discovered Roland knew about his plot and tried to kill him, but he survived and took the officer out. He then became a vault hunter because he couldn't go back to the Crimson Lance.
"Scavenger kids, barely ecking out a living"
The Kids: nicely done hair, barely dirty
And all their teeth perfect hollywood-white. This is also something that pissed me off SOOO much in "Terminator Salvation".
As someone who's not the biggest fan of Borderlands, I think that Terry Crews should've been the one to play Roland. At least he would've looked like the character.
Seeing Crews playing Roland as a Doomfist style over the top action hero could have also been really fun, so naturally that's not the movie they made
Could see him, my first thought was Samuel L. Jackson though. I would've accepted either, but Kevin Hart? Not it.
If they really gave a damn about the movie, if they *really* did, they would've based it somewhere in the actual Borderlands game timeline.
They could've done essentially the same plot if they ran with Jason Momoa playing Mr. Torgue as the underworld contact character instead of whoever it was playing Moxxi (maybe for Tina to acquire some 'splosives), with Vin Diesel playing Brick instead of Kevin Hart's Roland, maybe Pedro Pascal or Antonio Banderas playing Mordecai instead of old lady Lilith, and maybe have someone playing Scooter taking old lady Tannis' position as resident junkhead techie. Maybe also throw in Gary Oldman as Sir Hammerlock, since they have similar facial structures.
Would've taken place shortly after Borderlands 1's ending, as Tina is recruited by Brick to help kill a train full of Hyperion goons (iirc) and would've led into an excellent post-credits reveal of Handsome Jack being played by... Paul Rudd, maybe?
Would've potentially kickstarted the development of one or two more movies that were set in the timeline but in unexplored events that happen between games, like the Borderlands 2 movie could've been a rehashing of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, or maybe just about the crew sabotaging one of Handsome Jack's eridium refineries & trying to steal his Vault key. (Or maybe both in the same film, a team vs team movie?)
A BL3 movie could've detailed an unease surrounding the Calypso Twins' ascent to power as the B-plot (which we got none of in BL3, instead just being a lame millenialistic attempt at unearned antagony) to an A-plot retreading of Tales From The Borderlands.
I don't understand why they chose Kevin Hart. He's not an action star at all, he's not intimidating. He's at best a comedy B-list supporting actor and even then he's not funny after your age hits double digits.
He's never been funny and he never will be.
Double digits 🤣
Well, given that Borderland's style is B-Tier comedy that isn't funny after your age hits double digits, that might have been the most on-brand decision in the movie.
Also, isn't Roland supposed to be unfunny? As in actually just a brickfaced, but kind soldier? Assuming everyone is someone we already know from the games (Tiny Tina, Lilith, Tannis and Krieg).
@@bitysbitys2393facts
Two things I don’t get about this movie are
1. Why was Tina in the movie it’s so random and doesn’t make sense in the story
2. Why did they pick such old actors
This movie should have been a slam dunk
Another reason the movie bombed: It wasn't Borderlands as people know it. In the games, some of the characters really were just hunters looking to strike it rich. The storytelling came from them gaining new motivations as time went on, or finding more conviction and clues in their old ones (for example, Mordecai wanting treasure, then watching his bird get tortured to death, leading to him seeking a new bird and hunting the big bad, who is also after the treasure). The primary difference that made things feel off was that the characters in the movie were advertised to be the same characters, but are nothing like the ones from the games. In the games, Lilith was in her twenties at the oldest, Roland was a big guy and the most level-headed of the group, and Tiny Tina was bonkers and just loved blowing stuff up. All of them were just a few of millions seeking the vault for their own personal reasons, and the reason Pandora was such a bad place was because nearly everyone on it was either crazy or willing to throw down at any moment to reach that vault. Usually both.
I had no idea about the bad writing and such, though I had my suspicions. I opted out of the movie because they chose to have Lilith played by a clearly-50-year-old woman and wrote her to match while keeping the teenage look, and because I didn't think Kevin Hart was a good match for Roland either.
Oh, my friend, there is so much wrong with this movie from the perspective of a Borderlands fan. The opening scene alone has several problems.
Think about the time and money that went into the robot shit scene. Dear lord.
And I mean, you can do that, but in the way the games do it. Take it VERY seriously so it loops back around to being unserious, so the joke is that it's just slapstick bullshit, and it's bad and you shouldn't laugh, but you kinda do. That's basically how they do all the good humor (because not all Borderlands humor is good humor, like in Borderlands 3) in the games. Especially Claptrap's scenes. He's just slapstick joke after slapstick joke. And it's mildly funny at least. I don't really like slapstick most of the time, but I understand they didn't accidentally make him do slapstick and be annoying. That's the joke. That he is a bad joke. It's funny because it's bad. But it's a fine line. You can't make it too bad. Then it's not funny and it's just bad.
Studios depending on a star-studded cast carrying mid movies is getting incredibly exhausting. Just make movies good! It's not that hard. There are so many talented people out there that can carry these projects. Cutting corners like this just makes no sense anymore, because studios have seen the same outcome over and over again.
yeah, i think the era of just having name actors alone has become a tired cliche with audiences, who are over that, especially after seeing how insufferable a lot of celebrities can be. we really just need solid stories again instead of cgi, set pieces and gags/cameos/fanservice
The casting really baffled the fvck out of me. I mean, Cate Blanchet and Jaime Lee Curtis aren't "current year" famous. Sure, they'd draw in fans for something classy & highbrow (like an Agatha Christie movie) but this...? What gamer is gonna want to see a 60+ yr old Blanchet playing a sexy character that's supposed to be a THIRD of her age?
They should have cast the hot blonde with the superior rack from Madame Webb for her part! Get some tall, built dark chocolate looking mass of eye candy muscle for Kevin Hart's character!
LEAN INTO THE FAN SERVICE, FFS!
It really, truly, is not that hard to do! Hell, anytime Henry Cavill takes his shirt off onscreen, money printer goes "brrrr"!
I would have watched this dumpster fire of a movie and liked it if it had cast a bunch of eye candy actors hamming it TF up, leaning into the lore in a cheeky way, and just blew crap up while looking cool. But no, we got the retiree roster of the A list actors trying to hang on to their former glory.
@@sarasunshinemt4444They didn't want to put younger attractive females in the movie. That would be giving the straight white males what they want, and we can't have that. So no money for them 😂

How could they fail at a basic teasure hunt movie? That's what it is in the game, a Vault supposed loaded with treasure left by a lost civilization is found on a death planet, basically space australian wilderness x 100, so, adventurers known as Vault Hunters go to Pandora lured by the promise of treasure, meanwhile, Atlas, an evil space megacorp is also after the Vault, because they believe there is invaluable technology in there, they are commanded by a Siren, one of 6 human women in the galaxy that have ESP abilities (the 7th is so dangerous the others keep secret about her) named Commandant Steele, oh, by the way, Atlas, Hyperion, Torque, Maliwan, Jacobs, they all deal with vehicles and weapons of different flavors and types, Atlas specifically deals with weapons that are the "more dakka" type, a.k.a automatic weapons. There are 4 main Vault Hunters in the first game: Brick, a big guy that can punch just about anything, Mordecai, a hunter accompanied by his space falcon, Bloodwing. Lilith, a Siren THAT IS 22, not 55, and has the ability of phase walking, she can both teleport anything and go through walls and Roland, a soldier that balances the comedy by being STOIC and DISCIPLINED. Tiny Tina is a traumatized 13 year old psycho that is a badass and appears on Borderlands 2, that reveals the events in 1 were orchestrated by the psychopath CEO of Hyperion, Handsome Jack, one of the best videogame villains ever created.
It's insane how much they fucked up one of the easiest stories. Like all they ever got was a 5 sentence rundown of the first 2 games COMBINED.
@@azurewolf3592 yeah, they are all weapon manufacturing companies (along with other lines of work) and each specializes in one type of gun, Atlas has special firing modes, Maliwan has elemental guns, Hyperion has special tech like shields and aim assist, Dahl has the best scopes, Vladof is the more dakka guns, Jakobs is the ol' reliable, old looking but packs a punch and the CoV has the bizarre ones and Tediore... Are the joke guns.
Not to mention, Lilith the Siren alias the Firehawk (because her Siren powers also heavily use elemental powers, esp fire) was born on Dionysos, not on Pandora, but she came to Pandora _after_ her Siren powers (and the glowing blue "tattoos" every Siren manifests) had awakened and she wanted to know more about them. She came to Pandora because the scientist Tannis had claimed that there might be a connection between Sirens and the Eridium ore which was connected to the ancient vaults of the extinct species of _space-aliens(!)_ that humans had named "Eridians" after the metal the corporations were mining.
Lilith did not first manifest her powers on Pandora.
@@TF2CrunchyFrog And Jack got what he wanted, as opening the vault caused Eridium to spread on Pandora and the creation of the Slag element for weapons. Sirens are powerful, but aren't chosen ones, not invincible, nor immortal. Tiny Tina is insane but hides her trauma well save for moments that the Vault Hunters are witnesses to, movie Tina barely qualifies as eccentric.
What’s even more insulting is that Borderlands has very deep and interesting characters. It knew when to deliver a joke and when to take itself seriously, at least before Borderlands 3.
A lot of the characters had interesting backstories and personalities. In the games Tiny Tina has such a strangely fun personality that makes her standout in everything she says and does; in the movie she’s just every little whiny kid you see everywhere.
Tina also has a tragic backstory if you ever heard the audio logs.
They completely threw that away in the movie... along with everything else.
@@LethalShadow EXACTLY! Oh my god, why?! Why did they change her backstory? Granted I don’t know all the details, but just from reading the movie version I knew it was nowhere near accurate.
The movie script writers
- made up their own story, chucking together characters from Borderlands 1, Borderlands 2, and made up a generic corporate villain.
- completely changed the backstory and home planet of Lilith the Siren, made Lilith not a Siren for most of the movie but made her a made-up "daughter of Eridia" (when in the BL games the Eridians who built the vaults as prisons for Lovecraftian monsters were an alien species and went extinct a long time ago).
- removed Lilith's glowing blue "tattoes" on her arm that every awakened Siren has which immediately make them recognizable as Sirens.
- changed Tiny Tina from from an orphan who had escaped the human experiments by Hyperion Corp that killed her parents, an experimence which drove her insane and caused her love for explosives because she had only been able to escape with the help of a hand grenade her mother secretly gave her before she was dragged away. And instead made Tina a clone??
- changed the personalty (and height) of Roland the mercenary soldier and omitted his iconic auto-turret he has in the games.
- changed the age of Lilith and Tannis the scientist by casting actresses several decades too old,
- removed Krieg's backstory as a survivor of Hyperion's brutal experiments of injecting Eridium ore slag into people and animals to give them supersoldier powers, experiments which drove him insane (similar to how the original psychos had been enslaved miners mining Eridium for DAHL Corp), omitted the fact that Kreig's mutated body also has superpowers that suspiciously resemble those of the Sirens, and omitted Krieg's sane inner voice and his connection to Maya the Siren, and to Hyperion Corp's CEO Handsome Jack, who all do not appear in the movie.
- Oh, and they made Claptrap an annoying comic relief instead of the tragic last surviving CL4P-TP unit, programmed to sound upbeat even when he is incredibly depressed... okay, admittedly, Claptrap is quite a self-aggrandizing cowardly sh*t-head in the games, so he is comic relief, but the games do not sink to the level of random shit and piss jokes.
@@LethalShadowcan you imagine if they actually put that lore in the movie? Or really ANY lore from the story or logs? It'd be a whole different conversation then. It makes me want to weep.
@@TF2CrunchyFrogI mentioned it in a different reply, but they would've had gold if they just stuck to the original programming and showed off a Suicide Squad-style movie involving Brick, Mordecai, and Scooter after the end of BL1 instead of Roland, Lilith, Krieg, and Tannis, and incorporated the actual way Tiny Tina was first inducted into the Crimson Raiders (aka going on a spree with Brick against Hyperion/Atlas, I forgot who).
Also, could've skipped out on including Moxxi and had Jason Momoa show up as Mr. Torgue, being an underground contact, maybe being selling the crew explosive weapons for Tina, idk. Was thinking Vin Diesel could play Brick, and maybe Antonio Banderas as Mordecai, though I know he's a bit older. Dunno who'd play Scooter, but regardless of casting, it could've been decent.

You've taught me a lot about screenwriting. The level of detail you give as to what makes a bad a movie a bad movie is impressive. Things I never even thought of when I watched the movie.
Agreed, now I base a movie more on how much i understand the story they’re trying to tell instead of how good it made me feel. Don’t get me wrong tho, there’s a time and place for simple feel good movies but both matter now.
I really notice in every clip how clean everything on Pandora is. Things will be dented and the paint is chipped like it was partially sandblasted, but there's not a speck of dirt on anything. Every vehicle looks like it just rolled out of a car wash, everyone's laundry is fresh, even the "scavenger kids barely scraping out a living" look like they washed their hair just before appearing in the movie.

i love how its obvious they ran out of budget on things like the CGI or the lack of props and better costumes. The reason why the movie turned out like it did is because the weiter had a Meet Cute on the way to the Pitch Meeting and lost half the script pages.

The math on making a borderlands movie isn't hard. Take the borderlands game, subtract everything but the cutscenes, add missing but necessary character development and it equals money. Lots of money. Instead, they wanted to use a beloved IP to strip money from fans without giving them actual Broderlands in return. They deserve to lose all the moneys.

Whats scary is that Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox (who make the games) was an Executive Producer on this doing a ton of video interviews from on set... he wrote on social media after the film:
"So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done, I'm super flattered! We're working extra hard four you on what's next…"
Thi deluded fool gave us Borderlands 3 as a follow up to Borderlands 2, More Tales From The Borderlands, and now this movie... there is a strong pattern of declining quality and i fear the franchise is now dead. Id love to be excited for Borderlands 4 but its a battle of my head and heart.

-Ghibli, because Ghibli's awesome and Zelda has heavy Ghibli influences anyway
-Laika, because stop motion is underrated and Kubo and the Two Strings had heavy Zelda vibes already (also it would be funny as hell if the Zelda movie was in the Link's Awakening remaster's art style)
-Guillermo Del Toro, with Doug Jones playing all of the Zora and Ron Perlman voicing Ganondorf

I don't understand why certain studio execs still insist on making video game adaptations that don't respect the source material. It's a lose-lose situation for both fans and general audiences. Faithful adaptations like the new Mario and Sonic films have been successful, so it baffles me why these kinds of adaptations are still being made.
Btw, I still think you should cover Godzilla Minus One. It features a lot of advice you've given in the past on how to make a great monster movie and even has a strong human plot. Which is something that most monster movies have been struggling with.
Out of touch nepo babies who think they know how to make movies, that's how.
I don't even think it was a case of that. It is the utter contempt for the audience, expecting them to be satisfied with pointing at something on the screen and saying 'i recognise that.' It's jingling a bunch of keys in front of our faces and expecting us to pay them for it.
Well there is incompetence, then there's this.
I never played the games and thought the trailer looked horrendous and had no interest in watching this film.
Watching all the massive bombs, partially due to inflated budgets and an absurd lack of care that goes into production, from Hollywood in recent years has been wild. Seems like the entertainment industry buys IPs and pushes out adaptations because they think there's a built-in fanbase without understanding what these franchises are actually about or bothering to put any craft into the actual film.

I feel like if you were to compare playing the games with your own music playlist going where you can just barely hear what everyone's saying and what little I've actually seen of this movie, you get something similar. Just violence, bigger guns as the 'story' progresses, and this one (or two) BBEG(s) hollering about how much you cant stop them until the good guys win and evedybody goes back to what they were doing.
As one NPC from the third game says, "Vault Hunter isn't a choice. it's a mindset." Vaulters (quite literally us players) might care about the story enough to have context in what we're actually doing, but we also might not and would rather see how big we can get that damage number to go up. Either way, completing the quest is the endgoal. Regardless.
Something tells me this was the problem when filming this movie. The extremely accurate yet accidental portrayal of a Vault Hunters mentality being broadcasted to the average everyday bloke in reality.
I aint defending the movie with this, I'm gathering that its a properly shit movie anyway but these are my thoughts about it.
Long story short: Movie has gamer mentality without meaning to and thoroughly fucks its own, half existent plot line in the ass.
I feel like this is what happens when you change formats between two different kinds of media...
I was waiting for this
I don't think not explaining everything or having a vague end goal is bad in and of itself.
I'd argue the Indiana Jones movies have very unclear goals other than "there's something valuable/powerful we want to get to first". Similarly just having some vague side group of characters, the psychos not being more than just "crazy murderers" doesn't matter.
The bigger problem is (as you also said) that _nothing_ has any explanation or motivation. Vague goals and a mysterious world mean that the characters have to carry the story all on their own.
Alice in Wonderland doesn't have to have a clear goal, the world doesn't have to make sense, but in turn, the characters and their interactions have to be 10x better to compensate.

there are so many things that are wrong with this movie. the biggest one of all is that they dont respect their own source material.
the game already have a serviceable narrative, but they have to reinvent the wheel. it should be an treasure hunt action comedy with lots of hijinks and gore instead it becomes whatever this movie is trying to be.
the casting is also baffling, they just need to make lilith sexy, tiny tina crazy, and roland............ not kevin hart.
borderland is the super mario bros of modern movie adaptation.
Characters on a journey towards an unknown goal can also lead to the best story ever, i.e. one piece
One Piece is trash though.
they should just used the right actors and they should just took more time with consept instead going qhick and not thinking and to top it off. best quote of the day famous actors does not equal more money
4:36 to prove his point here look at Borderlands 2. (Warning, wall of text)
Consider the fact that you’re playing Vault Hunters hired by Handsome Jack, only to be backstabbed by him via exploding train. We meet Claptrap and someone named Angel, who guide us to Roland’s resistance to fight against Handsome Jack. Already a colorful crew, all with the same and valid motive. You (1 out of the 4 to 6 Vault Hunters you play) want to kill Handsome Jack mostly for his betrayal and in some cases for what he’s done to others, Roland and the others want to do it because he’s pretty much lost it and wants to go on a genocide regardless of anyone’s innocence.
Definitely what made the movie flop so hard mostly has to do with its targeted audience. I can promise you that the specific audience isn’t short, far from it. Any Borderlands fan who’s played even the first game alone will tell you “wait a minute, this shit didn’t happen.” Overall, the people who made this didn’t bother to even do the most simplest of wiki searches ; and instead just chose to stomp, spit, piss, and shit on the source material, place it on a silver platter and line it with glitter. No matter how they serve it, IT’S STILL SPIT, PISS, AND SHIT; and marketing it as something else insulting to the people you’re selling it to, regardless if it’s the targeted audience or not.
Saw it for free on RUclips. I figured. How bad can it be?
