Guys. Would you like it if I'd get a VO artist to do the voice on this channel to some extent? I'm losing my voice as I'm getting older and it's showing. I sound dead, can't really help it. Having someone else do it would bring more energy and improve the content. I've always done everything myself, so this would be a way to save some time and upload more.
Pls give me honest feedback thanks. You guys are the reason I make these videos.

Han Solo and Leia in the original movies were interesting characters, heck, even C3PO or R2D2 were more interesting. (And yes, Luke is technically the main character, but I would argue those are also major characters - Han and Leia do alot in those movies.)
Issue here is that the show makes the effort of telling us she is so great, but not showing it (she actually is pretty bad at most things. Her skills as a mechanic come down to using a droid who does the work. So she is a glorified cupholder. Yay), not to mention that she later suddenly again is awesome at it with no real explanation (people with no or poor force abilities don't suddenly get awesome at it just because they get angry). Add to it that most characters in the show, but the MC especially, are just boring characters and you have a whole mess.

The worst part about this is within the old extended universe we had several "jedi killer" characters that are intensely interesting and describe in great detail how those killings would be performed. My favorite being a character in knights of the old republic 2, who describes how to destabilize a jedi with forced emotional trauma by targeting padawans and how to mask intent with mental exercises to get close to a potential target.
There are so many ways they could have made this killer absolutely terrifying.

The show literally has nobody to root for. Everyone is morally grey, evil or stupid.
You can do morally grey with good writing (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones), but this show felt like it was written by people who have never left their homes and have never had a real conversation with real people.
    It’s just terrible.

    • @djulianerenbourgh4969
      @djulianerenbourgh4969 6 месяцев назад +142

The thing with the morally grey worlds is that generally they either include the characters across the moral spectrum (the obvious dead horse here, Game of Thrones, has Ned Stark, Jon Snow, Joffrey, Brienna, Drogo and Ramsay) or make at least some of the characters do both good and evil stuff (Hound or Jaime in GoT), with the viewer swinging at the emotional pendulum. I mean, it should not be that hard, most of the mainstream fantasy, from the more classic Silmarillion to the contemporary Green Bone Saga, accomplish that. But the Acolyte... well...

    • @gpcube
      @gpcube 6 месяцев назад +84

Not only that, the show takes establihsed characters and the Jedia organization and says "Nah, they were actually bad, Yoda is a liar. Conehead guy, he was part of cover up. It's all a conserpicy because the Jedi are actually corrupt and terrible people." It's not like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, or Game of Thrones because those don't take established characters and organizations as been previously established as good and turn them morally gray, this does, and goes a step further.
It just shows you how the creatives at Lucas Film see the world.

    • @writingref

And the dumb thing is that, they have shown they can do it with Andor
But with Jedi mythology, the jedi are tragic heroes / but they are still heroes.
The Sith have a point - but they are still villains because their point isn't incorporated into the virtue of the jedi
Its just an excuse for their selfishness and pursuit of power
This show attempts to make villains of heroes and make excuses for the villains
And that is a fundamental misunderstanding of Star Wars as Lucas wrote it

It's honestly stupid how writers just forget how multi-talented the Jedi actually are. Like, it might SEEM suspicious that Padawans are trained from such a young age, but that's because there is _a LOT_ of skills and abilities that all Jedi are supposed to know and it realistically takex many years to fully learn them (extremely quick learners like Luke are outliers). Lightsaber combat (reflexes, eye-hand coordination), Force abilities (levitation, mind tricks), emotion control, basic tech skills, basic first aid, ship piloting, the list goes on.
Even if Osha was just a Padawan, it should be laughably easy for her to get some kind of entry-level job with the many talents that Jedi train in. A private detective, a medic, a commercial pilot, a security guard, or even maybe a bounty hunter, just to name a few.

What I dislike about modern SW is how strangely amoral it is. OG Star Wars had moral themes and the modern content either steps on morals or has none. In the OT it’s shown using anger for power is a path to evil (like when Luke beats Vader with rage but then tosses his saber to reject the emperor in return of the jedi) and the good side win through friends, but in the sequel trilogy Rey uses rage to win her fights and never suffers from it as though it’s a good thing that she just angrily overpowers everyone. In the OT Han Solo is kind of a bad guy but he has a moral core & shows maturity and growth before he gets into a relationship with Leia, whereas in the acolyte Osha is attracted to the manipulative Qimir after he murdered many people including her friends and it’s portrayed as a fulfilling event. Similar to Reys romance with Kylo despite the fact he tortured her and destroyed planets. It’s just strange, it’s like the writers are portraying themselves as more moral than the original creators through hamfisted politics and vapid diversity but the actual core message of their work is way more immoral.

Good winning in the end, yes. Jedi/the heroes being good all the way through? Nooooope need to re-watch the source material. Hell, Luke pulls a Vader on a gammorean at the beginning of 6.

I think that while George Lucas was making Star Wars morals/righteousness/good vs evil were overarchhing themes thhat have been thrown aside in order to aid in the mkaing of complex characters, which are so badly written that there was no point. I found it interesting to compare Acolyte with Andor. As I rewatched Andor I saw some peculiar similarities. They both try to be a bit more adult. They both have a heavier reliance on non-Volume sets. They both even have a big flashback episode to the protagonists childhood where the outside world crashes in and rips them from their more humble backwoods culture.
But as Acolyte left me apathetic as nothing really had consequences I cared about. Where characters speak only plot and platitudes, where no room is left for scenes to breathe and be impactful. The contrast was so sharp when a split second decision of Andor while searching for his sister ruins the life of an officer he never met, sends ripples through his home town and the galaxy.
In one show. Nothing really matters. In the other, shooting the wrong goon can destroy the lives of everyone around you.
Guess which one had me on the edge of my seat throughout the runtime.
Yes, it's the one where a lone Tie fighter is treated like a weapon of terror and suppression and where Storm Troopers shoot to kill.

Then Leader-mom wants Osha to go with the Jedi but when they arrive basically gets huffy and goes 'over my dead body will you take her anywhere'; full-on confrontational, gets stabbed with a lightsaber as she turns into a shadow-monster, then gaslights the Jedi about letting her daughter go with them despite what she said 30s earlier.

I think that Basil is representative of the problems with the entire show. He only exists as "a tracker" because the plot demands it. There's no reason why Kelnacca couldn't have a radio to communicate with the rest of the Jedi, or have a routine location that he checks into to give process reports and receive supplies, but no. He's been lost in the woods for a year, so we need a badger thing to sniff his jock strap that the Jedi kept in a closet somewhere for a year just for such an occasion.
Basil somehow finds Kelnacca's house even though you'd think that the forest would be covered with his scent after a year of living there, but fine. Then, after the twins switch places, he follows Mae back, since he is suspicious that she is not Osha. Once on the ship, he is convinced that it's Mae, and so he 'fights' with her for a bit and then runs away to warn Sol.
And then when Mae flees in an escape pod and Sol chases her, Basil... just loses his mind and gets super pissed at Sol for no apparent reason and starts ripping wires out of the ship. Sol does not acknowledge that Basil is sabotaging him, never questions why he is changing sides, and lands the ship despite the damage. And then, when the rest of the Jedi catch up, Basil switches sides AGAIN and just goes along with the rest of the Jedi, even though he is a witness to everything that transpired and could vouch for Sol's innocence (if his stupid brain was on 'good' at that moment).
His motivations change in an instant with no explanation, and no one questions this even though he is supposedly an intelligent creature capable of thought and understanding.

The problem with portraying the Jedi the way people are saying the Acolyte did is that it sounds like it undermines the literal pillar beliefs of the Jedi like this was a normal thing. At least then I could imagine how cool it would be to have a mystery-thriller about a Sith Acolyte assassinating Jedi Masters in the High Republic Era, maybe it going like a Jedi Master Sherlock Holmes with a Padawan Watson and them slowly investigating each murder (that we see at the start of each episode or arc) and eventually leading to a climatic duel against the Acolyte and their master hiding the truth of the Sith until the Battle of Naboo.

The issue the fan base had with this show was it being made by people who openly know nothing about Star Wars and hate the series. They Jake Skywalkered the Jedi making them stupid, incompetent and weak for no reason other than to spite the fans. Then when the show started to get the criticism it legitimately deserved, they do what Disney has been doing for years now, attack the fan base calling them racists and misogynistic. This show was also one of the worst written series I have ever seen. This was the most expensive amateur fan fiction ever made meant to spit in the face of the legacy it was drawn from.

Jack and Rose constantly do meaningful stuff and it's incredibly engaging to watch. But even the secondary characters are never static or boring.
Theres this electrician in the lower decks who tries to repair a switch and gets electrocuted which then cuts power to the whole ship as it sinks, upping the horror even further.
Cameron didn't have to do that, but having cause and effect adds a level of tragedy you wouldn't get if the ship's power just went off by itself.

TLDR:The script is wasted on the level of actors they somehow managed to pull for this shitshow
It’s a bad show for many reasons. But I think the one thing about this show that genuinely upsets me is how they managed to pull people like Carrie-Anne Moss and Dafne Keen only to absolutely waste them in this D-tier script that reads like they just went with the first draft. Like here you have a legend of the genre and you kill her off in the first episode and then use her in a handful of flashback scenes. Then you also have one of the most talented actresses of her generation and you give her nothing to work with and then kill her off in a moment that is playing on emotions they haven’t earned out of the audience because no work was put into the character.

Totally agree with everything you said, but just fyi your tldr is written backwards. The script isn’t spoiled by the actors, the actors are spoiled by the script.

Watching this breakdown I cannot understand if the author has even watched the movie.
Osha being a mechanic shows in so many scenes - when the jedi padawan is struggling with some technical issue on a ship and she immediately knows how to fix it. When she shows inherent familiarity with all the tools in every context these become relevant. She easily bypasses the elevator panel losing like no time at all and getting to Mae before the sith does, despite him using some sort of powers to move. The droid is a great multitool for her, yes, but it's shown countless times that she's perfectly capable without said droid.
Her being a former jedi is _central._ She understands how they operate. She knows the system from the inside. Also it is clear that she lost her connection to the Force because of her self-doubt after she left the Jedi Order. That's what the scene of her reaching out for the droid shows. That is why she is so excited when she comes to terms with some of her turmoil and can feel things through the Force again... Is "show, not tell" no longer a valid paradigm for you all? Does this need to be told explicitly to be understood?
The personalities of all the jedi are on display too. They're all suppressing their emotions, all making different excuses to why their actions are "fine".
Sol still thinks about Osha and the guilt haunts him, yet he says that he's "meditating on the past so he doesn't repeat it". He is shown as a kind and accepting teacher - when one of his students looks into the Force and sees raging fire, which would freak out _a lot_ of jedi tbf - it only gives him pause for a moment and he addresses the students _accepting_ that this is part of the Force, not trying to shun or push that perception out.
Yord is clearly full of himself and believes himself to be better than others because he made Jedi knight. He is lightsaber-happy and somewhat stuck up. He refers to Osha, _his former friend,_ as "civilian" when giving his briefing. He is trying to demonstrate that there is no connection and that he's better than her - because that is what the jedi teach is right. Yet their next interaction shows that this is not true and she still matters to him deep down.
Jecki is young, impressionable, a model student still trying to navigate what it means to be a jedi and not making sense of some of the contradictions yet. She is timid, yet the open and genuine interaction with Osha, which is so different to the kinds of interactions she's known in the Order, makes her open up and gain confidence.
    I could go on.
IDK if you'll agree, but I believe it is fine when a character _doesn't_ have a specific motivation. A lot of people live out their lives that way. She had a dream - to become a Jedi - but lost it. She had a sister whom she loved - but she lost her, as well. All she's got is that _very important_ job on a random cargo ship. All she's got is her crew and her droid. Her motivation is to see tomorrow, together with the lot of them. She doesn't need to be on some revenge quest or a search for some grand treasure. She's a person. Not all people and not at all parts of their lives want something grand. Not all people and not at all parts of their lives _want something._ At all.
Whereas some other characters have amazingly articulated motivations. For example, the sith guy shows more motivation in why he does what he does that almost _any_ darksider in _any_ previous Star Wars movie. He is easy to grasp, to understand. The Jedi all have their own motivations. Maintaining their status quo. Convincing themselves to let go of guilt. Finding that Vergence thing to convince themselves what they did was justified. Covering up the apparent darksider sighting in order to maintain an aura that "there is no war in Ba Sing Se" and maintain political power.
"The Jedi in the show don't do anything to earn the value of being a Jedi" - that IS the whole point!.. They wear robes and are decent with their lighsablers but THAT IS IT! They are not ready for the realities of life. They have some experience and try to do what they believe is right but it backfires spectacularly.
I feel like the only 3 jedi in the movie truly worth the title are Sol, Inara and Sol's green friend whose name I do not remember. And they are FLAWED. They are all flawed. Without an overwhelming evil force for them to face, the jedi are not great to have around. They wave around a lot of power without much regard to how it reflects on the world. The three I mention are worth the title because they already got burned. They are careful and attentive now. They haven't always been.
Having watched to the end, I realise that the author has not even gotten beyond the 50% mark of the show. The short show with only 8 episodes 30-45 minutes each.
Truly, I cannot believe this assessment is fair for that very reason.
The author's main argument is that "the relationships are shallow and the events are not moved by the main characters".
Yet he doesn't take the time to watch until the relationships are fleshed out and until the driving role of the main characters becomes clear.
NGL, kind of a waste of time watching the review and typing this comment because I believed it would all go somewhere. I hoped I would find an answer to why people hate this show so much. Instead I found a review by a guy who only wants to see stories with a strong driving main character (which, mind you, often feel forced).

Thanks, Filmento, if you maybe could answer this: One theme (the main one?) in the show is "the power of one, the power of two, the power of many". I therefore expected the two girls to work together, and to be strong in the force (power of two), but only if they stay with each other: No. Okay, then I expected the witches to be stronger together than the Jedi (the power of many), but: No. And then the series ends with the girls switching sides basically (one is brain-wiped and the other one trains to be Sith). --> I think it's a total lost of plot and theme at all. Where is the power of many? What's even the point? The witches are stupidly incompetent and blabbering nonsense. Even the show creator can't explain what exactly happens with smoke clouds etc.

  • @natsune09

You can't analyze everything wrong in just 18 min. People were making videos pointing out everything wrong about the episodes that were longer than the episodes. Some more to touch on are:
-Lack of acting: Osha/Mae have no emotion and just stare blankly. The good actors are dragged down to just bad levels. People with wooden acting are allowed to shine.
-The plot was shoved along. Osha is dragged between scenes, she was often forced, arrested, or knocked out to get her to the next scene. Other characters were too, it wasn't limited to her. Characters make stupid decisions all the time just to move the plot along. Motivations flip like a coin with no real reason and no impact from other characters. Ships fly at the speed of plot concenience. We have a scene where Sol flies to the one planet. In that time, another ship arrives from Corescant, they land, find the bodies and investigate, go back to the ship, fly back to Corescant, have a bunch of meetings, then Sol arrives at his destination. He turns on his beacon, and the Jedi leave Corescant and get to the planet in like 30 minutes. So what the writers are trying to pass off is that its faster to fly from A to B to C (with plenty of long breaks inbetween) than it is to fly from A to C. This happens numerous times. Its all because they can't glide the plot along with good writing or logic, so they need to shove it along because it would just die otherwise.
-Then there is the bad CGI, bad fight scenes, things that don't make sense like camp fires in space or rocks catching fire and turning into an inferno with ease.
The show was bad from the ground up and from start to finish. There was really nothing good about the show.

What bothers me the most is Jedi have been painted as very powerful people but the show just made them shallow and even incompetent. As we know, Jedi train from a very young age and their entire upbringing is training and classes and we have see he result of them, from previous star wars works, being highly skilled, disciplined, knowledgeable, and having wisdom. And I stress highly trained since its been said using the force is difficult to use and have a rather calm and no attachment to master. I didnt see any of this at all from the Jedi, they seemed comparable to me and general people I hang out and work with, making the same mistakes and selfish and arrogant and things I have done. Jedi are not that, they are disciplined and have the organized structure to avoid those problem, without those in place one could turn to the dark side- what comes with great power comes great responsibility. I guess a comparable example is Jedi are the popular culture depiction of Shaiolin Monks in Tibet. And thats before have these magic powers like foresight and clairvoyance should mitigate mistakes and problems. The fault was just being downright incompetent but the fault should have been them being so prideful and self assured as wielders of the Force that their arrogance blinded them to make mistakes. We didnt see it as much as I liked but the downfall of the Jedi in the prequel movies was just that. I have seen historians lectures of why this group or that group lost the battle or fell and many of them say said something similar to "they lost because they were so sure they couldnt lose".
