It's crazy to think about the power of these waves. I remember when I was 8-10 years old around 2001-2003, we used to go down and rent out a ocean front mansion with like 30-40 family and friends in north Carolina. The waves were rarely bigger than 3 ft or so but this one summer, there were these huge 6-8 ft waves right on the shore literally. I'm not sure why but there was about a 3 foot drop off on the sand onto the shoreline where the tide came in. And I was throwing the football with some of the older kids and got dared to run under the next big wave that came up on the shore. When I tell you it folded me up like a pretzel, my head smashed the sand between my knees. I didn't understand the power of water like that. It also completely ripped my bathing suit off and took it out to sea...so i was the laughing stock of the beach for the rest of the two weeks we were there 😂 can someone explain to me why the waves were so big so close to shore and why there was such a drop on the sand to where the wet sand was? Like what causes that?

    • @ianlasken6109

Probably due to the period of the swell. Some short period swells will smack right onto shore

With a steep shoreline, a larger wave can roll in closer to the beach. The wave grabs the bottom abruptly, and the top throws over with much more power than most beaches.

Shorebreak. TLDR deep water or a high tide where the water is deep enough wont have waves break on the sandbar but right on the shoreline instead.
Often in the summer the smaller to mid swells can carve out that dropoff at the high tide line you mention, makes the beach steep, and in my experience the higher the wall the deeper the water is which is generally where a big hole/rip current is. If thats the case, thats the shorebreak zone; there's not really a sandbar there from the current clearing it out, and rather its a mini 5ft trench funneling raw swell/unbroken waves to the shoreline aka fold you like a pretzel knock your shorts off. Couple that with a high tide and better chance the waves don't break before the shoreline. Waves break closer to the shore in the summer even at low tide cause the bars are closer, in winter the larger swells clear the sand at the shoreline and build bigger sandbars further out. At least that's what I've noticed here in NJ on my st thats a beachbreak with no jetties, sand moves and tide swings differently at different beaches.

Growing up on the Monterey Peninsula, I surfed this magic spot in the early 80s, ( a local secret) a jet ski/ski doo would have been so, so helpful. My dad let me use his 15 ft. Avon inflatable with a 25 HP Evinrude. We would usually drop the boat from Carmel Beach and toot over the sets. Me and my buddies would switch out doing the retrievals. Keep in mind we were only young teens at the time. And we always surfed at the decline of storms, when the swells were receding, in that the power was really almost too much to deal with. As i stated in a previous vid, even paddling into 12 to 18 ft. sets was extremely difficult, due to wind positioning, rocks, currents and kelp fields. The 20+ ft. waves, my "Steve Blaylock" Sunshine Freesyle 6'9" was pushed to its limits. Its a very dangerous, tricky break. It demands respect, lucidity of mind, and sobriety. I took many a nasty spill there. Many. I also caught the rides of my life, in my own back yard........

How does a surfer being high on Meth while paddling into waves have anything to do with Skis and tow in surfing?
Also it’s a stretch to call it a tragedy to drown while big wave surfing- while high on Meth.
The tragedy is doing Meth in the first place.
