How Ghost Tree Took Big Wave Surfing By Storm... Then Disappeared | Made In Central California Ep1

- In the mid-2000s, as tow surfing was reaching its zenith, a little-known wave on the Central California coast surfaced on the pages of surf magazines. Taken by the bone-white trunks of the gnarled cyprus trees that stitched the nearby cliffs of Pescadero Point, a select cadre of hardy big wave surfers named the wave Ghost Tree. For a few years, it seemed certain that Ghost Tree had sealed its place in the pantheon of legendary big waves, alongside places like Waimea, Mavericks and Jaws. But, as California filmmaker Graham Nash reveals in our latest three-part Made In series, Ghost Tree's fate was far from set in stone.

My Old Haunting Ground. I remember surfing there in the 80s at the end of big storms. Us locals knew how to access the beach at various entry points. Was always cool to have many friends who lived in PB, Gate Guards were cool and the Sheriffs never gave us a hassle. 12 to 18 ft. was plenty to try to paddle in on. Pure power. Lots of rock boils and kelp and kelp and more kelp. And cold. On huge storms, Pyramid Point at Moss Beach up the road a bit, would break a 1/4 mile out. HUGE waves, 30 ft. +. Only a few made the paddle out there. I never did.

Sharky as f*ck too... you never feel “alone” surfing cencal/NorCal... hell even SoCal at lots of breaks. Always in back of your mind something lurks beneath you trying to differentiate between food or foe.

RIP Peter Davi
Steve Spaulding, Filmmaker, Legend told some of us about the Tree back in the 90's. So did Davi, another local Legend who on a day in 2004 paddled it, embracing the mystery for all eternity. Respect the Legends.

Always been intrigued by this place. Can remember a film called, "Ride On" which had a clip of Jamie Sterling ????? riding a 30 foot reform. Probably biggest wave I've seen although Maenheere reef on one swell has run it close. Can't wait for chapter two - when can we expect?

I can't wait - a lot of mystery seems to surround GT or perhaps it's just because it seems to get little coverage in comparison to Mavericks yet seems capable of holding bigger swells. PMs comments were interesting. Often see film of Mav's and wonder what GT was like on that day. Roll on 20th.

I used to live 5 miles away from these waves but work took me about two hours away but you gotta eat - at least sometimes

I never see clips of Ghost Tree anymore and it makes me sad. Growing up in nearby Aptos that place was basically just as legendary as Mavericks to me. Maybe even more legendary because it's a more fucked up wave than Mavs
