Can I just point out >OP paid for the tickets!?< Why is a HS student buying tickets for her family to come to her graduation!?!? This child is used to being forgotten and took matters into her own hands...and still got left empty handed
my high school was massive, so we only got 2 tickets each, but we had to buy more tickets if we needed them.

@@NatasiaEmbroidery Good question. I bet there's a lot more going on than we think between OP and their parents. I'm just saying that in big high schools, you might end up buying the extra tickets because they only have so much room in the venue.
Younger sister is the golden child, I would bet on that.

That’s what I was thinking. Like, schools have all the dates locked down & sent to parents at the start of the school year. There was no excuse for them to not know when it was. Her being valedictorian may have have been a surprise, but that date was not.
@@jeannadavis2872 yes. why was the camping trip even planned for that weekend?. did none of the other girls going have people graduating? Why didn't the parents say no to the trip? Damn, my older sister came to my 8th grade graduation and she was married and 8 months pregnant at the time.
There was an update, they had a good time with mom and seem to have made friends with the other girl’s family. They all went out to dinner instead of going to the after party. OP seems kinda done with their family apart from mom, which is fair

OP said that the parents got an email about it. So if the dad didn’t bother to pay attention to that and then didn’t care enough to move his plans to make up for that lack of attention on his part, how is he so surprised that his daughter didn’t feel like he cared to be there and sold the tickets to someone whose family DID want to be there?
Years later OP dad is going to ask "Why doesn't my oldest daughter talk to me?"
He'll probably pull the same crap at her wedding. "Sorry I missed the ceremony and walking you down the aisle, but the bar's still open so we're all good, right?"

The sister, she is 15, was one of the original planners of sleepover, and they came up with the idea a week prior. She knew about the grad months before. OP says says the sister has been very competitive lately, especially when it came to their parents. Sister insisted that the dad comes to her sleepover, and she did not want to be the only one in her group late, so she refused to go at a different time.
OP and her mom told the dad about the reddit post, and he went to stay with his mom. Grandma called mom to tell them off, and mom said to keep him.
Dad needs to learn priorities. Good for OP for setting boundaries!!

I didn’t even go to my graduation and I feel awful for OP. This is a huge accomplishment and dad is pathetic.

Your dad is telling you, OP, that you aren't worth his time. OP, you were kind to offer your extra tickets to people who could use them. Your dad is an ahole. Don't waste your time on him. It isn't a relationship worth having until he:
1) learns interpersonal skills
2) gets therapy
3) apologises to you completely
4) stops being a shitty parent

What in the actual heck?!? My sister lives halfway across the country from me. Literally like 30 minutes ago she sent out a text to our sibling group telling us that our nephew's graduation is tonight and sent a link so we can watch it. One of my kids is making up a dance class and we already have plans to take the kids into the city to go shopping. But I immediately responded and said we'd watch as much as we can. Because that's important to him!

NTA! I doubt a parent for each and every kid at the sleepover would have been required or that your father and sister couldn't have left a couple of hours early to be at your graduation on time. I truly can't blame OP on this one.
Dad was presented with the opportunity to make some effort to be there and was like, "Nah."
High school graduation is listed on the school's calendar, which is available to parents when the school year begins. That is a lot of advance notice. I agree with Candy Thunder, this is a once in a lifetime event, and a huge milestone. Reschedule the sleepover.
Lost my grandma in 2020. I sang the national anthem for my 2006 graduation. Along with both of my parents, She was there and so proud. OP got FREAKING VALEDICTORIAN. They're NTA, and Dad won't be seeing much of OP post-grad

Also I can't believe the parents didn't know the HS graduation was coming out cause the school pump out SO MUCH messaging around it, and the fact SHE had to buy her own grad tickets makes both parents AHs.
I would have never missed my childs graduation. My mother didn't miss mine and she passed 6 months afterwards. I would never want my children to do without me and think i didn't live or care for them. Dads a a dick! NTA
Ok I know Dusty didn’t want to put sister on the scale but if my sister was graduating anything I would be moving plans or cancelling. There’s no way I would miss a siblings graduating. OP is NTA. Dad sucks
My grandmother and aunt attended my graduation with my mother when they heard my dad couldn't get the day off (he'd lose his job). My grandmother and aunt lived 4 hours away.
Dad has redefined their relationship forever.
I can remember when I graduated but, that my graduation date was given to us six months in advance so that we can inform friends and family of the day and they can schedule off work or anything else to be in attendance. Which really helped out to have my mom that lives in a different state show up for my graduation. Also my aunt also made sure that my younger cousins was there and didn’t have any long else going on so that I could feel loved and appreciated and supported by my family.
💯 NTA. PROTECT YOUR PEACE SWEET GIRL. If your dad and sister think that a little sleepover is more important than your actual graduation and you busting your ass and becoming valedictorian of your class, then they don't deserve you

My dad missed the end of my college graduation cause he had to 💩 and he also missed my Basic Training from the ARMY graduation (my mother missed family day but was there for the graduation... I also had to apologize for my parent's lack of planning).
These are some of the reasons why I'm NC with my parents today. OP is NTA and deserves so much better than what she got.
Yesterday was my little brother Noah's graduation and the whole family was there including my boyfriend. Noah and I have 3 younger brothers who are special needs. Well..one of them started crying during the graduation ceremony and my boyfriend and I took him out to try and calm him down. My boyfriend saw that I was visibly upset because I didn't want to miss anything so my sweet boyfriend offered to watch my youngest brother for me. Unfortunately, he ended up missing most of the graduation but I'm forever grateful that he did that because I would've been heartbroken if I didn't see Noah walk across that stage.
My thing is when child graduate go to the graduation and graduation comes one time a year

Let's be honest - dad doesn't give two wooden nickels about OP's graduation, valedictorian or not. The date for graduation was set at the beginning of the school year at the very latest! You cannot tell me the sleepover was planned 8-9 months ago. Shame on dad for being a piece of garbage. OP is NTA. Mom is an enabler. Dad is Ascon1 for putting little sister's thing first.
Why couldn’t the dad take the sister to the sleepover after the graduation?
The tickets were bought weeks in advance. Maybe dad didn't know the time and assumed he could do both. But he KNEW what day it was. Dad was okay with missing photos, the ceremony, and OP's speech, but was mad he was disinvited from the after party. Dad is clearly saying, "I don't actually care about you or your accomplishments. I just want free food, and to not look like a deadbeat in front of the other parents."
Graduation dates are often announced MONTHS if not a year in advance. And senior year is ALL ABOUT graduation. There's yearbooks and graduation rings and caps and gowns and cords and stuff to purchase. It's when you typically find out where a kid's going to college... Capstone testing or projects get planned... Internships are passed out. THE WHOLE YEAR revolves around that graduation date. So I heavily doubt that that little sleepover was planned BEFORE the graduation date.
And even if, for some bizarre reason it was, you're only going to get to see your kid graduate with honors and give their speech ONE TIME at their high school graduation. It's not as if he can just "catch the next one". He effed up royally here, and I wouldn't blame OP if this damaged her relationship with dad permanently.

That's the thing tho. The graduation date has been set in stone since the start of the school year. There's no way the sleepover was planned that far in advance. It doesn't matter if she was valedictorian or not. She was graduating. That's enough.
NTA. They made their choice. OP was giving a speech as Valedictorian. They should not have made plans for the day of her graduation. I think OP did the right thing.
Mom and dad had to have known ahead of time. Do you really think the daughter NEVER talked about it coming up? And there were caps and gowns to buy. They’re not a last minute thing. Dad can go kick rocks.

OP is definitely the asscanaut. Her father and sister were going to be there, just late. The fact OP went and did this just out of spite is sickening. Dad and sister are in the correct. OP was wrong.
She was giving a Valedictorian speech which they were going to miss for a sleepover. Being Valedictorian is a big deal and so is graduating. A sleepover is not.
Are you serious? Dad had previous knowledge of the once in a lifetime graduation from high school. Arriving late means you WILL miss the valedictorian speech. PRIORITIES! Sleep over/camp out vs. graduation is a no brainer. Tell me who's daddy's favorite without telling me who's daddy's favorite... NTA all the way!
@strawberi6257 plans were made in advance. The sister shouldn't be punished for OP springing it on them at the last moment. Sister is not favorite, dad is just being respectful of first come, first serve.
