    People love to judge what they cannot understand. One of my favorite quotes is,
    “Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge”...
    It’s extremely evident this guy is a professional. These kids are learning amazing team building skills, bravery, courage, keeping their wits about them etc. They’re gaining valuable insights in to the types of men they will become!
    - And big credit.. because this Uncle is like a Boy Scout leader, just for the hardcore...only!
    It’s obvious that every single time they venture.. it is not going to be extremely safe. Yet, if they’re smart about it and pre-plan/are not going in blind, their elimination of risk is pretty set! They all are extremely knowledgeable and extremely brave in their “panic reference” moments.
    I like this channel and his little crew. They’re all adorable.

    Love the risk statement at the end, you’re teaching these kids self-responsibility and to take charge of their own safety, which prepares them so well for their future, rather than most adults/parents who try to shelter their children from risk. I applaud that. As a ski and snowboard instructor, when I teach youngsters, I am always amazed and humbled by how much more capable they are than their parents allow them to be. The parents are amazed too. Adventure and risk assessment is part of living a great life, and we should help children develop these skills to prepare them for such. You cant compare the number of fatalities to determine the risk. You need to calculate the fatality rate for each. % of those who are killed vs. % of those partaking in said activity. Obviously fewer people die caving than driving, as an infinitely larger amount of people drive cars, than do caving. Love the videos, keep it up!

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 года назад

      What technically we can compare them but correct, statistically it's not a good comparison.
      I just knew those stats off hand so it's a way of demonstrating that caves are safer than most people imagine.
      Within our cave in community there's a few 100 people and many many family members with kids who have been caving in this area over many decades. No one has ever been even mildly injured. The thought never even crosses anyone's mind. The general stability of lava tubes is absolutely incredible.
      So safety just becomes kind of a relative term.

    After watching the first video of you I thought you were crazy. You risk the life of you and the kids. But after 3 or 4 videos I realized that you are actually pretty sane. You don't take uncalculated risks and it seems like you and the kids have have a pretty good common sense for danger and truly know your limits. At least that's what you show on camera. I hope this never ever changes for likes, subscriptions or views.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 года назад +5

      We get a LOT of negative comments like, "they're killing their kids for views." Which... is ridiculous and more importantly wrong. We live here and have caved our whole lives. It never even occurred to me that it was dangerous. But it's been fun and we decided to make videos. Turns out, there's a real taste for claustrophobic videos! But there's also plenty of hate. In reality, no one has ANY idea what's going on behind the camera. But haters don't care. So 1) we make videos of our normal lives 2) We take input from people who like us. And that's it.
      But yo, it's REALLY fun.

      That's awesome! We feel the claustrophobia too! Most caves aren't this tight. When we go through a small passage, we take our time... which allows us to adjust emotionally to each space. We stay calm, and when the kids have had enough, I lead them out. Even just getting out in the fresh air is nice. Some of our friends only peek in the entrance to caves... and that's ok as well. Just a little adventure is good for the soul!

    It’s so weird to think someone built a dam there!

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 года назад +1

      I think what happened was there was a natural dam which kept the bottom full of water. So it was terrible to get through. A crew of people altered the natural dam, creating a drain, so they could drain it, and crawl through, then when they left, they could plug the drain, and restore the cave to normal. So much work!

    Cant stop watching these videos, 30 mins ago I couldn’t think of nothing worse going thru caves, now I wish I knew someone like you go to with! Haha can someone explain why someone put water in the way of the passage?

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 года назад +4

      I think the water was "original." Some cavers in the 60s, wanting to access the cave on a regular basis, built a way for the water to drain. So they could return, and drain the sump at their leisure, then let it fill again when the left so no one else could get through. That drain broke eventually leaving the bottom full of water... again... permanently. After I made my way through the water, I was able to repair the drain... and so it functions again.
      I never could get a clear idea of what occurred. But the other side of the cave does have some extremely delicate features. So they want the bottom to stay filled with water.
