      Strangly: agreed. The smooth lava has a weird permanence to it. Like it's uncrackable and you'll not be getting out.

      My theory would be that with a flat surface, you can clearly see the well defined tiny area you’re in. When the walls are jagged and create lots of shadows there is the illusion or even actual possibility that there is more space than if the walls were smooth due to the increased surface area of the walls.

    • @krissuyx
      @krissuyx 2 года назад

      A bit of it probably has to do with a rough surface having things to grab onto or push against to move yourself. Not so much with a smooth surface.

      That cave sucked. That was a painful painful adventure. Not so much because of the cave, but because we hiked like four miles in the ice and snow... And on the way out, after we were scraped up and tired and already cold, we had to make the hike back through the snow and ice in darkness.
      But we lived! I wasn't sure of a few times. But we lived.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 года назад +7

      It's kind of one step at a time. We didn't just end up in difficult caves. We've been doing this awhile and know how to approach each situation. The basic rule is if you don't fit in a passage you don't fit. It's not that easy to get stuck. If the passage goes downhill we back in feet first. If it's super tight we usually leave and come back with tools as well as other people. Or we just go home and think about it and make a plan.
      We also have cameras on robots that we can send inside a passage to ensure its basic safety.
