That's quite the loadout for a first timer, clearly you did a lot of research. I think most everyone carries too much on their first trip, but if you were sitting around 30 lbs total that's pretty good for a first time, you just now know what it's like to bring a week's worth of food. Stick with your current base gear for a while until you figure out what you like and don't like. Everyone's preferences are different. I never could get comfortable on even the plushest of sleeping pads, so I use a hammock, for example. If your goal is to slow down and smell the roses so to speak, you might want to add a camp chair and more amenities for around camp. Lots of the backpacking youtube space is centered around thru hiking so it doesn't always give an accurate representation about what's best for weekend long trips where the goal is something other than miles.

Well done. I remember my first backpacking trip in Shenandoah National Park back in 2007. Something that I had desired to do since I was a kid. Then at 43 years old I did it and it was a successful 2 night trip and I absolutely loved it. I’ve done so many more trips since that year and every time I still get apprehensive the night before I head out. Not because of the negative possibilities during a trip so much but because I mostly go solo and that I’ll be out of my environment. Once I hike for about a mile from the trailhead, all that apprehension fully disappears and a beautiful calmness enters my soul…a particular calmness you experience only when solo backpacking. Thanks for the video.
One thing i recommend doing is keeping your headlamp somewhere easy to reach, and not tucked away in a dry back in your backpack. When it gets dark sometimes you have to reach for it in almost complete darkness so then its good to know exactly where it is

This was a awesomely filmed and narrated video! Your ability to concisely tell the story while interjecting it with jokes is great. I'm looking forward to the next journey :)
Nice video. It brought back some feelings and emotions I had when I first started solo backpacking. I've been solo backpacking since I was 18 (I'm 67 now). No matter how long you do it there is always something to learn. Occasionally I still make stupid mistakes despite having over 50 years experience. Although I backpack with friends I savor my solo experiences. Despite going to some pretty remote places I always run into people. The only time I had multiple days of solitude was in the Uinta mountains in Utah were I didn't see anyone for 4 days. It was awesome. Keep at it!
Thanks, thats great to hear! Im looking forward to exploring new places, and im hoping by the time I reach 67, I’ll be fortunate enough to still be out there doing the same exact same thing. Best wishes to you as well!

I'm planning on doing my first three day solo camping trip. I've gone camping twice, once in Canada for one night and for two nights in Ireland. Hopefully I'll do fine on my first solo trip. It will be in Spain, where I live, and if all goes well will be heading for a nine day solo camping trip in Norway. Getting ambitious really fast. Thanks for your story! Motivated me to stand firm on my plan. At least we don't have bears here.
Man, I want to be a backpacker/camper in and out of a truck camper.. similar to this, maybe a little bit more bushcrafting with knives, saws, and shovels, esp to make food on a fire/complicated shelters.. but this is a great start, very similar to what I have in mind for the future. Please keep making these videos, i love ur down to earth style and your ability to look back at what you did right and what you want to change. You're a big encouragement man
Those scott eye hand augers changed my game. I always went out with a saw and/or an axe, but easily making pegs and matching holes gave me the ability to create more complicated structures. Now I can bang out a mallet for batoning or a chair in no time and make reliable two-story bushcraft shelters. Such a small tool for so many applications.
Thanks for the video, bud. It’s nice to watch one from someone just starting out. I started watching hiking videos from Dixie, from Homemade Wanderlust. But since her, too many followed her but taking things way too seriously. This was refreshing. And if you haven’t yet, check out homemade wanderlust. Her first videos from the Appalachian trail were initially just for her family. They are great and her evolution has been wonderful. Looking forward to see yours.
What an amazing first solo backpacking trip! The Mount Rogers and Appalachian Trail Loop looks like the perfect place to start. It’s inspiring to see you test out your new gear and get a feel for solo backpacking. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips. Have a great day. Cheers, Simon - Tales From Abroad
Honestly those are some great takeaways! I remember being so scared of being able to finish the first trail I did that we initially had to the idea of trying to get to camp as soon as possible to give ourselves a safety net. Once we decided to go on random side quests and really explore the area, it became so much more fun.
Nice humble vid! My buddy and i are planning to explore a lot this summer. Im talking almost the whole mountain range. 3-7 day hikes. We are super excited and cant wait till the snow starts melting so we can begin. I personally am also wanting to study the plants along the way as well. Im glad he siad he wants to do it as well because i was planning to explore the whole mt range by myself if i had to. It'll be nice sharing it with one other.
@MinnowTankVideos yes, I'm very excited. Beings how these mountains I talk about are basically in my backyard, learning the plants are well worth it for medicinal, and herbal reasons. Once you start looking into them, you realize how useful every plant can be. Bushcraft is also very fun!
Best commentary ever. Hilarious! Food is always the hardest part. For a guy your size, you probably didn't over pack as much as you think. When you start going for 4-6 days, you will need to eat A LOT more food than you do at home. Can't wait for your next vid
Thanks! Food definitely seems the trickiest to plan. I’ll be curious to see how it changes as I get a better idea of what I eat, and definitely as the hikes get loner. Im hoping to get back out there soon!
Glad you enjoyed it. I’d love to relive my first solo camping trip. The best ones, as you suggest, are the ones that don’t have a fixed end point/time.

That sounds super sweet! Happy hiking!
That is one awesome setup for a first time. I am a huge Durston fan myself. I just picked up the Kakwa 55 for the pack and the IceLine poles as well.
I’m 49 and plan on doing 1/2 the AT this summer. Can’t wait. Love your narration and video editing!
Thank ya, and best of luck! I bet that’s going to be great!
You're a big encouragement man
Thank ya, and I agree, I'd love to have a lil camper van or truck to travel around in! Also sweet profile pic
This was such a peaceful video and I'm glad RUclips sent me here. Thank you!
Well done man. I've made my new years resolution to start my own backpacking journey this summer. cant wait to get out!
Sounds like it’s going to be a solid year!
Cheers,

Honestly those are some great takeaways! I remember being so scared of being able to finish the first trail I did that we initially had to the idea of trying to get to camp as soon as possible to give ourselves a safety net. Once we decided to go on random side quests and really explore the area, it became so much more fun.
Good idea leaving the food in a different area that’s a great tip, I really enjoyed the video as well man it looked like you had a great time!
That sounds like it will be great, I hope its a good time! Studying the plants along the way will be super neat too, I like that idea
@MinnowTankVideos yes, I'm very excited. Beings how these mountains I talk about are basically in my backyard, learning the plants are well worth it for medicinal, and herbal reasons. Once you start looking into them, you realize how useful every plant can be. Bushcraft is also very fun!
I congradulate the RUclips algorithm for sending me this video even tho you have nothing else on this channel cool stuff!
Well done! Quick tip if you go camping always leave it like nobody was there☺️
So place the leaves back and twigs and no trash
Glad you enjoyed it. I’d love to relive my first solo camping trip. The best ones, as you suggest, are the ones that don’t have a fixed end point/time.
This video makes me feel so happy and peaceful. Make more please!
The highlands were a serious highlight of my AT thru-hike. Great video.
Great trip and great video! I can't wait to see more.
Incredible first video on the channel!
Wonderful video, thoroughly enjoyable. Thumbs up to the down to earth, basic approach. No labels, brands, tech this and that. 👍👏
Love your Backpacking in snow video! Wow! You be brave!
Here i am on my way to my first solo camping trip and i see you’re also in Va like me. What a great sign. Cheers!
Nice video dude! Hope to see more backpacking videos.
Thanks! Hopefully i’ll get to go back out soon and film a different hike
You did decent for your first time, and you made a good video to go along with it. I like its short time span and pace you kept it at. Keep it up.
You did good kid, real good. You're a natural born RUclipsr. Keep the wit at all costs. Safe travels.
SUBBING. Everything this guy did or said, I feel like I can definitely relate if I ever did go on a solobackpacking too.
Really nice video! Was very enjoyable and great voiceover! Good luck with your channel
Great video. Love your gear setup. Im fairly new to all this and will be doing my first solo camp either this or next weekend. Started up my Channel couple weeks ago to also share my experiences in the outdoors. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

South West VA is just so pretty its amazing how easy it is to just find some woods to get lost in
Nice video man! I’m going to rewatch it when I get home to check out those views again.

Luke from TheOutdoorGearReview has hiked that same Mount Rogers trail and spoken highly of it. Nice video and glad you had a good experience.
This was a great video to watch as I am just starting to get into the research phase of this. I can't wait to follow along with your journeyand see where it takes you! You should definitely try and make a trip out to Utah!
