if you are filling the filter housing up front with diesel, you run the risk of putting unfiltered fuel into the system past the filter, if you just close it up and cycle the key a couple times your lift pump will fill your filter housings and she will start no problem. just trying to help.
Guy L you are completely right. I’ve changed multiple filters on these trucks. The priming process is as follows: turn the key to run for 30 seconds, then turn off for 10 seconds. Repeat this process 5 or 6 times then try to start the engine. If it sputters, prime a few more times. When it starts check for leaks
I found slipping a 5/8 rubber hose to the drain tub into a clean plastic milk carton saved on spill and easy to fill up the rear filter with fuild when install. And use a cut plastic milk carton to catch the rear filter in.
That "sensor" on the frame filter is a water in fuel sensor. Also. Like some of the other comments say, dont pre fill your fuel filters... you can add a fass type system if you wanna spend a little $$$ and delete the filter in the engine compartment with a fleece machined part.
That's good to know. My first filter change is coming up, but I'm not touching them until they get down to like 2%. Not at their cost. Hell, if I can change them 3 to 1, that's a good plan.
Change both at the same time. Most filters will be different micron levels. Bigger micron in rear and catch the smaller particles up front. I'm running 3 filters. One at the aux tank.
There are some really good Diesel additives out there. My father was a Mercedes mechanic 45 years. He use liqui-moly hi test in all the Mercedes turbo diesel cars and he said it made a big difference in the long run. You might want to use one of these every filter change. I know liqui-moly also makes a DPF cleaning additive that you put in the fuel tank.
I just spend the 150 Bucks for both filters and getting ready to do mine tomorrow... The shop where I bought my truck didn't impress me with their service dept. so I'm going to document my oil and fuel filter changes with a gopro… hopefully that will be sufish enough for the warranty??? Thanks for a great how to video.... RUclips its an amazing place....
So the rear is a water separator not a filter. Thanks for posting this. I couldn't find the rear. I bought a cheap filter set online and there was a drastic difference with the front filter. Spend the money for the good one. And as others said, it self primes, no need to add fuel. Just cycle the key
I leave the cap off a and turn the key on for bout 4 sec and off and on... about 10 times it will fill up and then I put the cap back on Easier with 2 people so you accurately see when it's almost full. No need to pre fill filters Start with the back then do front then prime let pump do it's job:)😁😁😁😁
My buddy changes and primes one filter at a time. So, he'll do the rear, prime it and start the truck. Then do the front, prime that and start the truck. Says it primes faster, but I don't know if that's true or not. Mine are at about 18%, so I'll have to do them soon. Per another post, I may just do the rear. Maybe...
Good video, Just changed all 3 filters and oil. SAVED $100.00 over the dealer price, and thats buying "Royal Purple" synthetic oil. Save more next time due to not needing to buy couple of specialty tools. Thanks for the how to.
LMAO At 4:37 My wife just told me the same Dam thing today while buying my two fuel filters for a mere $145.00 .... love the video thank you for a great video...
Fuel filters MUST meet 3 micron spec. I use WIX brand; the pair cost about $100. Good video but agree install filters without fuel and use ignition key cycle on 5 seconds up to 5 times until it starts and continues to run.
If I replace my filter too often, I run the risk of introducing all that fine silica engine dust right into my fuel filter canister. I think I am going to 1) only replace at the recommended interval, never before. 2) clean my engine bay before doing this job.
Just a suggestion start in rear replace oil water separator filter then cycle you key allowing fuel pump to pressurize the system then move to front drain leave drain open till filter is replaced then close drain cycle key again then start That way ya don’t have to fill the filters Ps after pressuring the rear filter start then move to front
I usually start with the rear filter, then click the key on a few times, then start it. Then the Front filter the same.. Last time I did it I got about 5 gallons of fuel on my garage floor.. Forgot the rear gasket and Niagra Falls! Then I did the Same damn think on the Front Filter. Niagara Falls AGAIN!! While doing the Rear Filter I did not want to damage my HEAVY 18kt Gold Wedding ring with baguette Diamonds... So I put the wedding ring in the rear fuel filter box! Forgetting about the ring I dumped the box in my trash can. So saving money cost me hours of garage floor cleaning and a 6,000.00 ring.... I love saving money and doing things myself... So much Pride....
Sorry your way is to dammned expensive I live in Texas and by the time i drove all the way to Canada to get a "tim horton cup" i was ready for a 2nd filter change , next time im just gonna use a" dunkin dougnut cup" that I can get locally and save some money. Thanks for the video anyway.
just changed both filters, and when I'm starting the engine, it starts leaks from water separator pretty hard. Do you know what can be the problem? How hard you tide up the cap of water separator?
So behind my front fuel filter is an elbow connector to a fuel line that started leaking after I replaced the fuel filter. I didn't touch it, I don't know what it's called, & I don't know what happened. Any ideas on the name or what may have gone wrong?
Don't use the fuel from the water separator to refill the filters. All you did was put any particulate and water directly back into the fuel system and the engine.
Right or wrong, I have always filtered the collected fuel through a cotton cloth and reintroduced it back into the fuel tank. Except for the little bit of sediment that may remain in the bottom of my wine bottle..
I just did this install on my 2017... for some reason my front filter continuously leaks fuel when the truck is running. I tightened back up the valve and installed the filter with the new o ring so I don’t know what’s going on
JablesOutdoors I just got back in from doing that... I kinda need to get to work in the morning so this is a pain in the ass. I know this is going to be a stupid question but... it is clockwise to tighten right? I’ve tightened it all I can in that direction, so the only other thing I can think of is to try the other direction.

Guy L I appreciate it! It was my first time and didn't want to cause an air lock
That's the beauty of this fuel system, it will self prime.
BTW, good video!
Absolutely it's a much better system...just hit the button around 10 times without touching the brake and your in business!

always a good idea to save the pint of diesel fuel that dripped into an old tim hortons cup and pour it right into the brand new clean fuel filter !
Exactly..I'm not doing that part..defeats the purpose..
