    After the trailers, many are worried that Bill & Ted would end up being upstaged by their own daughters in “Face The Music”. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Terminator Dark Fate and Charlie’s Angels all went woke, and destroyed their legacy heroes; could Bill and Ted escape that destiny?
    In this video we will answer that question, as well as provide a brief history of wokeness on cinema.

      I stood by you in the last video before i had seen the film.
      Now, I found Wonder Woman to be woke. I’m not a fan if Black Widow (also Woke). I didn’t enjoy The Witcher (mostly woke). So I don’t always agree with the RUclips majority.
      However, Bill and Ted gets my “Woke free bill of health”. You are vindicated!
      The daughters were excellent, they loved their dads and they couldn’t have been more suited! The panel of “women” in the future was groan worthy. The black rocket scientist was “wtf?” .. but they were minor. It was LESS Woke than wonder woman.
      Minor nitpick... Woke goes well beyond TFA. The first Woke I remember seeing was the reimagined Scooby Doo (about 2010). From beloved characters from the 60s to the piece of sh1t I saw around 2010? I “screened it” and decided I didn’t want my kids to be subject to such intolerant prejudice. There as a hell of a lot of Woke in kids shows. The 60-70s were far more tolerant and inclusive. Post 2000 has been mostly trash. Occasional gem like “the last air bender” shows that brilliance is still possible ... but Korra was painful.
      So, minor nitpick.
      If you like the original Bill & Ted, this is worth seeing! Support the creators if you want alternative to Woke.

    Do people really want the main characters to "pass the mantle"? To me Ghostbusters (like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for example) are great because of the characters themselves. To me the concept of people catching ghosts isn't the main draw of the Ghostbusters but it is those four guys who we have come to know and love over the decades.

      Ghostbusters 3 was just a badly written movie, the jokes weren't funny, the story lines were lame and the general conversations were - Why did they green light this? I mean even the gender role flip with Chris Hemsworth had potential and i may of even thought it was kinda funny at the time, but looking back at this clip it's clear it is pretty cringeworthy(ruclips.net/video/aGcvpWAhP6I/видео.html). It wasn't bad because it was an all female main cast, i like the cast but their characters were lackluster. It just wasn't a Bridesmaids like laugh-out-loud quality that i was expecting, it was more a omg these jokes are not funny.

      @@pluckypluckster I don't have a problem with an all-female cast (and I seriously love Kate McKinnon), the problem starts when you try to make other characters not named Peter, Egon, Ray and Winston, Ghostbusters. That's my point, I don't care for a new generation or all-female Ghostbusters, those will never replace or surpass the originals. We will never be able to see the four original actors together again and that's fine, people need to learn to let go and move on to new things.

    Hollywood needs to follow the path of McDonald’s a few years ago. At one time McD’s was trying to be all things to all people. The internet was torching them for their unhealthy menu and wanted more healthy options. For some years, they offered a lot of items to appeal to this crowd. Their stock continued to drop. They realized they should go back to basics and scale back the overloaded menu. Stock went way back up.
    My point is, you can’t please everyone. The loud, vocal minority is simply that. A minority. They make a lot of noise but ultimately don’t WANT to enjoy your product and don’t patronize your business. Make good movies and tv that people enjoy, without pushing an agenda. A movie isn’t good on inclusion and representation alone. If you happen to make a good movie that ticks those boxes, no one will even notice.

  • @liljenborg2517

    The only problem with the analysis is that "wokeness" isn't as much a trend as it is a cult. The primary effect of Disney's "woke purge", for example, will not be an end to feminist and pro-LGBTQ "representation" (that is, preaching) in their movies, series, and comics. The primary effect will be the company coming down on employees and associates who "blame the fans". But the goal of transforming western culture via Critical Theory away from "whiteness" (that is, its Christian/Greek cultural roots) will continue apace. The people FINANCING Hollywood may be ready to move past wokeness, but the True Believers in wokeness who actually MAKE the product won't stop pushing identity politics. That's the reason many of them got into the film/TV industry in the first place.

    Funny how those who advocate for "more diversity" are almost always the same people who don't go out and buy said diverse products.
    "Toxic fandom" really is one of the dumbest phrases to come out of the internet in recent years or at least one that is abused to no end.
    Most fans who take issue with your work are not toxic people who "don't like change", fans generally want your brand to be the best that it can be. People in charge of such brands really do need to know that there is a difference between legit criticism and actual harassment.
    People saying "fans have become entitled" is kind of a redundant saying because as Zachery once said "you bet your darn right we're entitled". I work at a job that I hate, If I pay for something, I have an expectation of it to be worth my time and money. If it's of poor quality, then I'm gonna voice my displeasure. I don't pay for something I know is going to suck.
    I along with many other people invest in stuff that I'm a fan of like 007, DC Comics, Star Trek etc. and have certain expectations or them. If I get more shitty products like "Die Another Day", "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey", or "Star Trek: Picard" and less products of actual quality like "Casino Royale", "The Dark Knight" or "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", then your primary target audience will go somewhere else to invest in.

      Meanwhile you’ve got Steven Universe/She Ra fans going after artists for not “drawing certain marginalized characters *correctly* “ They don’t get publicly written off as toxic fans, especially in She Ra’s case

    • @edwardpaulsen1074
      @edwardpaulsen1074 3 года назад +11

      @Kam 90 ...and another SJW pops out of the woodwork... the only reason that these so called "Creatives" are getting supposedly "Harassed" is because they are not working within the boundaries of, or continuing a long running story. These "Creatives" are merely stealing the names and franchises of these characters and making up their own completely different story that reads/plays like a third graders poorly written fan-fiction in which they substitute them selves for the main characters and are absolutely perfect and can do no wrong while denigrating any other characters as the reason the story is so bad and needs to be fixed. These "creatives" are being informed of their myriad errors and departures from the entire story and are "upset" because their crappy, inaccurate storytelling is not being appreciated... perhaps if they just wrote their own stories with their own characters, it might be "reasonable", perhaps even decent. It is the equivalent of going to a fine restaurant and being served spoiled milk and moldy peanut butter sandwiches. Of course the people paying good money for an expectation of good food are going to be angry. When people do not like something, they stop buying it, and if they have already paid, they usually want their money back. But of course, you couldn't possibly understand such a basic idea... otherwise you wouldn't have posted such a foolish statement.

Having Bill & Ted's famous song turn out to have been written and produced by their daughters, with B&T just playing guitar, is like Lucasfilm going back and saying that Leia actually escaped from her cell and deactivated the tractor beam on her own, then later decided the exact nanosecond to fire the shot that blew up the Death Star, with Luke and Han reduced to just flying the ship in each case. Look, if it had been vague in the previous two films as to who wrote it it would be one thing, but it was blatantly obvious in the first two films that the characters played by Alex and Keanu were the ones that were going to write the song to save the world/universe. This movie just take all that history and throws in a quote on a watch to try to make the TERRIBLE retcon of it being their daughters that write the song acceptable. I'm sorry but that's just bad writing. I enjoyed the movie, I really did. It was great seeing them again and they did well. Their daughters weren't over done either, but the ending throwing out the strongest plot point of the previous two films is just ridiculous and a lousy retcon.

Multiculti is hinted at with the wedding song, but can be seen with the historical musicians. All 3 of the Americans are black. There's a Chinese flautist unknown to western civilization. As far as feminism, I'm pretty sure the future counsel was all women. But this multiculturalism and feminist stuff didn't take the plot off the rails into 'i hate white people especially men' territory like woke films do. This stuff turns out to be background noise to the actual plot of the film. What impresses me is how the writers took the lemons handed to them with things inserted into the end of Bogus Journey seemingly meant to sabotage a 3rd movie and managed to turn them into lemonade with Face the Music.

      It's hardly a surprise that neither of those films were mentioned since both of them were critical and commercial successes, so mentioning them would compromise the "woke film = bad film" message that Midnight's Edge have been pushing for quite a while now.
      The reason why it seems as though "wokeness" is ruining films is because, generally speaking, progressive films that are actually good don't get branded as "woke" to begin with. Wonder Woman, Alita: Battle Angel, The Boys, Captain Marvel and Birds of Prey all feature progressive/"woke" portrayals of female characters, but because the first three on that list actually did it _well_ people tend not to think of them as being "woke" movies/shows. Being socially progressive doesn't inherently make a film good nor does it inherently make it bad; it's all in the execution. If a film handles feminism well (like Wonder Woman) then people tend not to complain or think of it as having some kind of biased political agenda, but if a film handles feminism badly (like Birds of Prey) then it's held up as "yet another example of how wokeness ruins movies".

      Mild Inconvenience it also depends what your definition of woke is. To some it just means any movie or show with a female or non white character (which is pretty dumb) while to some others (which I think is the more correct definition) is a movie/show that showcases misandry and/or anti white racism, shows females to be superior to males, makes choices in cast and crew by affirmative action, has diverse casts In places where it makes no sense (like The Witcher), etc

    I think de-construction can work, but not of a paragon, more a deconstruction of a premise. Return to Oz deconstructs the Wizard of Oz by leaving the once beautiful and happy land as a dirty, destroyed wasteland. The Empire Strikes Back deconstructs the premise of Star Wars by suddenly making the story about a man confronting his father, rather than a man confronting his father’s killer. Who Framed Roger Rabbit deconstructs the idea of happy, carefree cartoons by showing us a man who’s brother was literally killed by cartoons, and that cartoons themselves suffer horrible pathos because their existence constantly revolves around making others happy, even while they are enraged, depressed, and without hope.

    • @Kevin_Street
      @Kevin_Street 3 года назад

      You're talking about the literary theory of deconstructionism: literariness.org/2016/03/22/deconstruction/ This has been around for a long time. For example, Alan Moore initially became famous for applying deconstructionist concepts to comic books in the 80's.
      The "deconstruction" mentioned in this video is actually a related but much newer concept called Critical Theory: andrewsullivan.substack.com/p/the-roots-of-wokeness The very simple (and probably inaccurate) explanation of critical theory is that it is an attempt to take the literary theory of Postmodernism (of which deconstructionism is a part) and apply it to the real world of politics and commerce instead of books.
      What we're seeing in the last five or so years is the emergence into the mainstream of a culture that had been previously mostly confined to college campuses and taught as literary theory.

In Excellent Adventure, Bill and Ted write music (many songs) that bring people together, helping to end war and poverty, and bringing about universal harmony with alien life. The past was never in jeopardy, and if Bill and Ted failed their history report and they were separated, the future wouldn't have been destroyed; it just wouldn't have been the utopia that it became thanks to Bill and Ted. You'll find that pretty much everyone on this comments section has a list of favorite strong female characters. Ripley from Alien and Sarah from Terminator are usually the two at the top. What we don't like are women who supplant established male characters at the expense of those characters, make the men seem weak and foolish so the women look stronger by comparison, or women who have unrealistic abilities (Kristen Stewart taking on a male twice her size in Charlies Angels) We get pissed and defensive when people like Tim Miller call us out as women hating fiends before we've even had a chance to see the movie (Dark Fate did end up being exactly what we thought) But strong, well written women aren't on our list of things to despise. They just seem to be in short supply these days.

      Yeah i thought that too, i was expecting the daughter's to say 'Dad's, we got this, we'll travel back in time and give everyone musical instruments so they can play along, then we'll return and jam away on our guitars to the song' whilst bill n ted were leaning on the phone booth saying 'that's our girls'..... Thankfully that never happened.

    • @lordtrumpy
      @lordtrumpy 3 года назад +1

      Also at the end of the film the daughter's say, it wasn't so much the song that was the key, it was everyone performing it at the same time. Which is where bill and ted really fulfilled the silly prophecy, they went back in time and gave everyone instruments, therefore everyone joined in at the same time(bill and ted time logic)and then arrived in time for the grand finale and rocked the night away with their guitar solo's. We then see the magic sparks fly off their guitar's as the world is united through song. It was still all about bill n ted, just they got some big help from their daughter's and young jimi hendrix etc.

    The main reason to have a passing of the torch in a sequel is if further sequels are planned, and the original protagonists are too old to carry the franchise forward in the long term.
    If the sequel is intended to be the concluding chapter of a story though, then you don't necessarily need a passing of the torch, especially if that story concludes with world peace having been achieved. In the case of this franchise, world peace was seemingly achieved at the end of the second film, so there was no need for this third chapter, never mind further sequels.
    Having just watched it, Face The Music seems like a well-intentioned film, which isn't an attack on men or masculinity like some of the other movies you listed... but it does feel like a film that's trying overly hard to be inclusive in terms of race and gender, and one that reduces Bill and Ted's contribution in the climax in order to achieve that.

    My theory? despite saying otherwise, this movie probably didn't get started writing until 2015. They shipped it around for a few years, getting more broke by the minute. then they figured out why it wasn't getting picked up, because hollywood was going woke. So, they played the game. They changed Rufus, the ruling council, and the sons to daughters and EVERYTHING else about the script remains the same, which is why it doesn't feel woke. all they did was change a few genders to get the movie made. that's what makes the most sense to me at least.

    Say what you want about Rey's powers, but the description of Holdo's relationship with Poe is a gross misrepresentation of that Last Jedi subplot. Holdo did not "get most of her people killed by not sharing her plan with her senior officers." She shared her plan with the senior staff. The fact is, by that point in the movie, Poe was not a member of her senior staff. He had been demoted for not following orders - an act of insubordination that resulted in the loss of almost all the Resistance fleet's fighters and bombers to take out one Resistance dreadnought. Having not learned any lessons in leadership from that, he then repeated his mistake, organizing a mutiny because he couldn't accept being out of the command loop. Had he properly followed orders, there probably is no mission to Canto Bight, no recruitment of DJ and thus no way for the First Order to detect the cloaked escape ships. Had Poe followed orders, he would have brought Finn to Holdo with his intelligence about the tracking system, and Holdo probably would have told him his plan at that point. But because Poe refused to follow orders and instead organized a mutiny based on sending Finn and Rose on an unauthorized mission, he's the one more to blame for getting so many resistance ships destroyed in the escape to Crait.
    This fact finally helps Poe learn the lesson Leia was trying to teach him about leadership, as in the Battle of Crait he's the one in the position of leadership ordering the troops to fall back to find a better strategy, and dealing with someone under his command (Finn) ignoring the order and instead pursuing the foolish attack. By the end, Leia is confident enough in Poe to essentially make him her replacement in the chain of command.
    So, I guess you can call it woke if you think the presence of the female military officers is sending the wrong message, but ultimately it's a story about following the chain of command, following orders and being rewarded for it. Now, the random lesbian kissing in Rise of Skywalker, there's your wokeness involving female officers.

      This was interesting, so just a few thoughts. As to point 1, they were never stated to not be daughters and were originally played by little girls, so I agree with the director that if they had been sons, it would have been a bit redundant, just Bill & Ted clones. As for point 2&3, I do basically get what you're saying but I don't think it bothered me in the movie. The reason being, the fact they were female had nothing to do with the plot, it was never used as a devise to school the audience on diversity. I hate woke overloads and I barely noticed. It was just there to be noticed or not noticed but didn't detract from anything. I'm ok with seeing more women in cinema so long as they are not there just because they are women. As for point 4, I liked the selection of musicians, I thought it was a great choice if you're looking for musicians more than songwriters, so again it didn't feel forced or like it was detracting. The Hendrix / Mozart scene was amazing. As for point 5 , well, I don't really care about the actors' personal lives unless they are in some way criminal and I want to avoid supporting their pay. If she has some interpretation of gender that I don't agree with, that's her business and good on her for not letting it get in the way of making a movie like some would. Just my thoughts :)

      Baka Broadcast the actual gender of baby actors isn’t important. Often babies that are just on set are used and dressed into the appropriate colours.
      The fact that the directors are using this to justify a gender switch in the story proves to me at least that it was intentional political.
      They were supposed to be boys. The fact that they didn’t outright put a disclaimer on the gender is because it was obvious.
      They were called bill and ted ffs.
      I know it offends the gender fluid woke brigade to be reminded that girls and boys act differently but it only becomes more apparent when teenage girls try and emulate teenage boys characters.
      When Teds daughter lowered her voice and started to swagger around it looked like a bad cosplay.
      Children are not carbon copies of their parents (as evidenced by bill and ted themselves).
      They could have made the kids individual characters but instead they made them female copies.
      They are doing it in a more subtle way (a few years ago they would just rebooted it like ghostbusters).
      People aren’t stupid though and the woke undertones still poisons the experience.
      Let these films continue to flop though it doesn’t matter.
      I don’t expect anything better now from Hollywood and have personally started to watch more of the Korean film industry instead.

The truth is that none of these creative choices damaged the film for me. It is true that no one names their daughters "Bill and Ted" but the very way they did that actually to me was quite funny. I enjoyed that honestly as a joke. Would I watch a film of female Bill and Ted? Probably not no, but as supporting characters I really enjoyed them honestly. I also must say that I am not making excuses because I would be the first person to be angry if they genuinely were sacrificing a childhood great of mine at the alter of a fad I dislike so much in so many movies. I honestly have no idea what Bill & Ted movie you watched. The one I watched saw our optimistic and capable heroes turned into fat failures who lie to and argue with past versions themselves over and over. The daughters manage write the song that saves reality by .... pointing to people...? The people brought to the present are almost all either women or POC or both. The only white male is Mozart who is portrayed as an uppity stick-in-the-mud. In the original B+T, all of the historical figures had flaws and value. What are Hendrix's flaws in this film? Or Armstrong? Or the Chinese floutist? or the African drummer? They have none. And thus, there is also no real comedy in those interactions -- or most of the film.
    I could go on and on. This movie was a huge disappointment. Was it as overt as Ghostbusters or TLJ? No, not at all. But it also sacrificed a good story for the sake of shoe-horning in .... whatever you'd call what I described above. "Water-down woke"? I could easily stomach this amount of woke-ness if there was a QUALITY FILM underneath. But that's all that was there.... shallow woke-ness and nothing more. :-( Very sad.

    Funny I remember when other series sucked, they just sucked for bad writing, poorly developed characters and poor vision. I guess if a series sucks that features diversity, we just blame it on diversity now.
    Oh and I thought all the movies listed sucked except avenger endgame because come on that movie was legit. Just in case you thought I was defending all of them.

      While diversity doesn’t make a movie bad, that doesn’t save it from the other issues you mentioned. While I do like Endgame, it’s not without criticism.

      @@gianthand8130 that’s my point though. Instead of focusing on the issues, people blame the diversity. Ghostbuster 2016 was just a shit film no matter who the ghostbusters were because it’s poorly written etc. So my point is instead of blaming SJWs and woke and soy boys, why can’t we all come together and just be like “hey diversity in films is something we need to work on but we need to make sure that the film quality and character development is there regardless of what efforts are made to increase diversity”?

    Never saw the second movie and wasn't even aware there was an cartoon version.( not that I would have been interested) The first one was part of my cultural grungy/techno background in the '90ties. Loved it.
    Anywho. I watched the latest edition, hoping it wouldn't suck. And it didn't. Its a fun ride with some very good scenes. Though for my tast it could have gone a bit more high value. I know the CGI effect are on par with the first movies, the booth was done cool but the rest .. we are 20 years later.. low budget 90'ties graphics, not cool then, not today. It would have helped with the world building. For Instance the future now feel unnesessary empty. Doesn't feel fun.
    On the humor part, I feel a lot has been left on the table. Most of the jokes aren't fleshed out enough. Most of it is sweet. But a little more wouldn't have hurt at all. Most fans are beyond there 40ties... even Disney's jokes are more fleshed to suit there secondary older viewers.
    Also didn't really like Killer Robot. Looks to me as a missed opportunity on the performance part. I didn't find him funny at all. Sorry if you did. Could have gone a bit further. A little more intelligently funny.
    Mite be just me. So forgive me!
    In any case, I will watch it again. That how I liked it.

      Nope. “Dune” is woke. They gender and race swapped a major character. It therefore gets no $$$ from me.

  • @deliezer
    @deliezer 3 года назад +23

    Still smells woke to me. Bill and Ted did not need to be made stupid, as they were stupid to begin with. They still had to gender swap the succeeding generation. The only thing stopping the woke rot here is that wokeness wouldn’t permit female characters to be stupid, so female characters are prevented from filling Bill and Ted’s shoes. The Woke Scourge continues, IMHO, until we see smart, capable male characters.

      If there’s a concern, raising that concern in a rational way can help!
      Hollywood is so intensely Woke that it’s reasonable to assume most films will be Woke.
      I won’t pay for Woke ... I won’t boycott Woke either (not even Amber Heard).
