“Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn” under performed so badly that even following its release, the title was changed to emphasize that despite the title, it’s really a Harley Quinn solo movie with some guest stars.
In this postmortem, @AndreEinherjar will explore how it could end up performing this poorly, and what effect that will have upon both the future of DC on film, and the industry as a whole.

And that was changed after a week in release. The female director didn’t do the job. The female writer didn’t do the job. The marketing was incredibly misguided. Aside from being woke and anti-male, it seems the film was aimed at young teenage girls who couldn’t see it due to the R rating. Total sh** show all around.

If they wanted to make a great Harley Quinn movie whilst simultaneously striking a blow at "da patriarchy" then they should have focused on Harley's escape (not break up) from The Joker. Her's is a classic case of a woman in love with an abusive man who'd just as soon kill her as kiss her depending on his mood. THAT should have been the story; Harley moving towards gaining her freedom, going through all the emotions that such a feat would entail, rationalizing his wickedness as all abuse victims do before finally seeing the light, seeing through his mind games and fighting through the withdrawal and learning to be her own person again. THAT would have been the ultimate emancipation of one Harley Quinn, not the trash fire they gave us.

Bingo! The problem with DC movies is not that they lack of good source material, it is that they don't have a master plan and a long term storytelling in mind. DC could have been restarted at Wonder Woman an Aquaman, get a new Superman, and more important to this case, a new Batman, present the new Joker and Harley, and how he abuse her and how she rationalized it, make a suicide squad movie we other villians that we already saw in other movies, and then we can have her escape from Joker and becoming a not-so-evil villian/anti hero that we would be rotting for.

The top comic of December 2019(Doomsday Clock)sold around 120k for comparison. Together that all translates to 184k of Harley sales

@@kory7698 so your rationale that she sells well is lumping the sales of 5 different comics and comparing it to sales of 1 other comic? By the metrics you give, Harley Quinn comics have been on a downward slide as the numbers are one quarter of what you say they were three years ago. I admit I don`t know comic business very well, but you seem to be cherry picking the first released book in a new series. The first book always has inflated sales compared to any other release in the series. It's a well known marketing ploy to maximize the number of series revamped or created to take advantage of just this effect. If you have a better arguement for why Harley Quinn is successful, please present it as currently your stats seem to indicate the opposite

The funny observation I've made with these types of films is that despite how much they proclaim to be about dismantling sexism, racism and everything else is that they themselves are chock full of their own sexism and racism but of course, being the 'heroes' they will never admit that. We all know about the horrible 'gurl power' that they put out but there is another pattern that a lot of people are just know picking up on, specifically with how this movie made the same massive mistakes as Captain Marvel did in handling certain other heroes and characters.
These movies really are just White feminist self-insertion fantasies. Anyone who knows the Birds of Prey origin story as well as the members already know that the group was VERY diverse in the heroines that were in it but with the 'Harley Quinn' version of the team, it doesn't hide that it's Margot wanting to place herself on the top of the position as being the White savior to a bunch of 'diverse and underutilized' token (at least in the film) minority characters that SHE has to lead and that SHE has to inspire to be hero....ines.
This is exactly what happened in Captain Marvel concerning Carol's relationship with Monic Rambaeu and her mother Maria. Both Monica and Maria did not know and had no connection with Carol at all but the movie made it out that Maria was a single mother and that Frank, her husband and Monica's father, was out of the picture. This was not the case in Monica's comic origin as she was the FIRST female and first Black CAPTAIN MARVEL before Carol and became so as an adult. She had no idea who Carol was until later and both her parents, her father especially, inspired her to be a hero but this was all erased in the so-called name of girl power and to elevate Carol to a position that was only done to make her look even more like a White savior than she already was presented as.
The same has happened with Harley Quinn. She was NOT a member of Birds of Prey as Black Canary and Barbara Gorden were the first and original two members before many other female characters got in. In terms of an anti-hero being in the team CATWOMAN was in. A speaking of Black Canary, her (half) race-swap was done as a means to pretend that they cared about Black characters when there is an actual and PROMINENT Black woman in the group and her name is VIXEN. Black Canary herself is a horrible mishmash of the two characters as her outfit is not inspired by the original or classic Black Canary look but rather a take on Vixen debute outfit sans the mask that she used to have. The Black Canary in the film is neither character but the makers assumed that because BLACK is in her name, she had to be at least HALF Black to fill up the quota and yes, it is quota filling. There is also the issue with how they treated Huntress and Casandra, with the former being especially dropped in that Cain is supposed to be a super fighter. She is the next Batgirl but you'd never know that with how she's presented as a dumpy-looking, cowering mess who once again needs White Savior Harley to save her.
The biggest irony of all of this is that the male counterparts of these films that feminist hate never go out of their way to discourage people from going, even if the main stars of them are White nor do they even come this close as flagging around so much White Saviorism as feminist movies do. Male-led action movies are what they are and they don't try to hide it which is possibly one of the advantages they have over feminist movies. They are not ashamed of being macho, they are not ashamed of being fictional, they are not ashamed of anything which is why first and foremost they always advertise the plot of the film itself and not the agenda behind it. They know they have to sell the movie on it's merits and what will interest the audience first because they know politics don't sell. Feminist movies like this sell the agenda first, most often than not because they know their movies are weak on story to begin with. They keep trying to sell to that so-called audience of gurl power ladies that never show up to these films which lead to it tanking. They sell the movie on gaslighting, antagonizing and just flat out being dismissive towards the people who will eventually pick up the tab for the projects but this seems to be the personality of the people who are making these films. Wonder Woman and Alita did not do this and while Alita is considered a cult film by this point, it is still much more liked and respected than anything you're going to get from Ghostbusters 2016, Captain Marvel, Charlies Angels and Terminator whatever.
tl;dr- there was never a goal of diversity in Hollywood. A bunch of untalented White feminists wanted to take over while shifting the blame on men and pretending to give a fuck about minorities.

Midnights Edge I don't know if this is true or not but I heard this from a video a while back that inside info. The movie had a very small amount of pre production time (ala one of the reasons why the fight scenes feel poorly choreographed) and when shooting commenced, they had little to no script to work off of. Everyone was improvising. Margot and Cathy really wanted to make the Atomic Blonde/John Wick of DCEU movies but WB had no confidence in their vision, but yet gave them $90 million towards their production budget. So they threw them into the lions den to see what they could cook up and the initial cut was not very good. So they called the John Wick guy for reshoots. I would put blame on WB for giving them very little time to work on BOP but I would criticize Robbie and Yates for the final results as well.

Things this movie should have done:
    - Rebrand Leto's Joker as Jason Todd/Tim Drake (or a combination of both) with the aim of him eventually becoming Red Hood.
    - Being a fun Harley movie with special appearance from BOP.
    - Dealing with the Harley/Joker dynamic and ending with Harley dumping him by the end.
    - This would setup the Silence of the Lambs style Joker/Harley movie prequel or a sequel with Phoenix taking his place as the real Joker.
    Things it did:
    -
    Things it shouldn't have done:
    - Going the misandrist route and making the movie as unappealing to men as possible.
Like I said during the premiere, this movie is a katamari of missed opportunities.

I think that the issue is this: DC fans want dark, gritty, psychological movies. You can confirm this by the fact that C. Bale's Batman was very well received, as was J. Pheonix's Joker. Both movies were darker and more psychological.
If you look at Suicide squad, or Harley Quinn, the bright, humorous approach did not draw in the crowds. People turn to Marvel for the funny, bright stuff and expect something different from DC, who seem to only want to 'steal' Marvel's formula to make cash. Which is the wrong approach.
Instead of making their own mark on the world.
I hope to see that change in time, and DC making their own, unique movies. But for the time being... well...

I think Hollywood has already noticed that going woke doesn't pay off... because _Ghostbusters Afterlife_ is coming in six months, and director Jason Reitman promised us no agenda nor slant _except_ to please _fans._ Whether the film is successful in its own way or not, if the initial trailer in December is anything to go by, it looks like he is keeping his word at the very least.
Additionally, notice that #TheFandomMenace has received much credit and vindication due to the massive amount of leakage coming out of these studios long before these movies release. So, let me put it this way: if _Ghostbusters Afterlife_ was working _badly_ right now behind-the-scenes, don't you think we would have started getting _negative-sounding_ leaks by now...? Studios that perform their jobs well and produce quality content _don't leak._ And considering this is *Ghostbusters* we are talking about here, if _anyone_ behind the camera was upset about shenanigans, oh yes we would have heard _something_ by now.
