Both the episodes have been amazing!! I really hope we get to see more and of Matthew and Petrula. Not only they do they give in-depth, custom feedback for the works (complete with bullet pointed pros and cons of the person's overall portfolio in the end), they also always tell us what goes on in the employer's/client's mind. This really helps me understand how to better present my work to achieve my goals. Also, they disagree at times which is super helpful as it tells me the views of two potential employers with different point of view about the work and it helps me prepare beforehand. Looking forward to seeing a lot more of this duo on the channel!!
I am in the process of creating my very first portfolio. I started a small design business with some friends in 2010. We lasted 1 year, I changed the name and kept at it. This video is helping me understand what I have been missing, consistency and context. Thank you for having a professional come in and share their knowledge. I will put it all to great use.

Great deal thanks so much, just nabbed it. I was just getting fatigued with my current crop and this collection looks filled with a ton of inspiration, efficiency and expediency.
Might wanna have disclaimer for viewers/designers to 'watch out/be weary' for using same mockup that everyone is using, otherwise portfolios will be saturated with the 'same mockups'. There's other sites as well, Creative Market (though that's starting to be overused as well). Viewers/designers can go the other route(s) of having projects photographed by pro photog. They will learn art direction and get to see the 'real pros' in action and build a vocabulary in studio lighting/product photography as well as build a relationship with photographer. Designers can even 'attempt' to shoot projects on a DIY level as well (youtube resources?). Doing it themselves they get to learn their equipment(f stop, aperture, ISO, depth of field, exposure/exposure triangle), learn lighting (studio or natural light...high key, low key), as well as art directing and staging products themselves. Instead of a mockup 'clipped' on a clean background that everyone and their grandma does, they can be staging scene ex/ product in-situ like a spilled coffee bag, coffee cup, French press, and plant on a wooden table out of focus/bokehfied.
I do not know why I kept nodding my head whenever I agreed on something that I personally encounter before and also the things that has been stressed on but it hasn’t been done in an agency or companies. You guys are so great to break down details and what’s need to be seen in this particular topic for struggling designer or even for the junior ones. Great job on reviewing and it gives me more thoughts on how I will be executing my own portfolio, Thank you! 🤗

This was amazing, just switched my major to art- 2D illustration and design. This video was an awesome insight to what I should be presenting in my portfolio.
I really wish that I could have gotten the same in depth feedback from my Dr. At the university. The areas of production and artistic demand emphasize a unique point of view from each creative artists. We need reminders to keep us on the road to greater expression and self development. What a useful series this has been! I want to get into motion design but there's not much of a career community on it, just after effects tutorials. Instead I've been watching videos on art direction, UX/ui, and graphic design. There's so much great information! I think applying these same concepts to my motion portfolio will really help

Sometimes it feels like there's more favor with the mockups than the actual design. Same goes with the description of the project over their skill in solving the problem.
I'm curious about this as well. I think it has so much to do with the designer's "vision". Since every individual has a personal way to interpret a design, when a designer puts their designs in mockups and presents it, the employer gets a clearer idea of what a designer is capable of. I'm ridiculously uninitiated in all this even though I went to design school :(

I have been thinking of transitioning to freelancing and the content you and Blind have been producing are giving me so much insight into how to do this. It has even improved my workflow and how I handle dealing with producers and product managers in a game studio environment. I can't iterate enough how helpful this has been. I can't imagine where my career would be if this information was available when I was a student back in 2001.

This concern just popped up when I was watching Francesco Battistella's work on the museum project, it's wonderful but I just wondered why did they come up with the idea of using those red and blue colors in the theme of museum. There will always be room for improvement, and something to always criticize. Criticism is invaluable when it isn't constructive.

I am noticing that a comment often is about being more clean in the branding of a designers Behance/portfolio. But a Behance page for an Art Director who works with advertising would easily be more "all over the place". Because they communicate on a lot of various places/media, and what they need to communicate to solve the clients problems/tasks also comes to play when choosing visual language and platform. So their speciality would differ more than a designers, or what? Do you have any thoughts about this. Would be interesting to get the Futur's perspective on this. Not a graphic Designer, but as an Illustrator, these portfolio review videos was really an eye opener for me and made me realize how unfocused my own portfolio are and don't show how my works can solve a problem a company have. I basically just slapped in works without context and called it a portfolio, really embarrassing haha. Thank you The Futur! Also a Singaporean here, I realize for Joel's "An Irrelevant Guide to All Things Geylang" context description, he used a slang to give a relatable and casual vibe ("makan" = eat in Malay). Would you recommend one to use slangs like this that someone out of our country can't understand, or for example, if Joel just want to only get Singapore clients, this is just fine and its just a small matter?
I think you already answered your own question here. Using slang or other similar vernacular helps to embrace intimacy between you and those who share your cultural background. If you're looking for work in different parts of the world, these nuances will immediately be lost without an explanation. However, if Joel's goal is only to seek work in Singapore, it would not be (absolutely) necessary.

For someone who just started with graphic design and has a couple of skills ( logo design, promotional videos, social media post design, business cards design...) and wants to work as a freelancer what would be your recommendation? To focus on one and perfect that skill or to present all of the skills he/she has? Also what should someone do for the portfolio if they are the beginners and haven't worked for the actual client yet?
I see it's a common trend when being introduced to a project, for instance while clicking a thumbnail on behance, that there is a desire to see an introduction to a projects background before actually diving into the content/designs. Would it be a better idea to instead of leading with the visual to instead lead with the breakdown of each project? Watching this series is making me not only rethink how I am approaching my portfolio, but my website as well. It's been incredibly informative and inspirational in the way it's breathing new life in how I want to brand myself appropriately not only to those who enjoy my work, but to those who may be potential clients.
which online platforms, (Wix, Squarespace, Behance) offer this kind of template that I can put my portfolio pictures under all the pages?So, that recruiters have access to projects without going back to the Home page?
I'm a bit puzzled how the last portfolio of the Italian student was so praised? It's not really matching the guidelines expressed in episode 1 of showing how the work solved problems or how it was realized..
25:45 I always thought it would be better to show your bio on your own website "first", since its not the first site people would visit.. Most directors find your work randomly on other platforms, and when they like it, they want to see the person behind the work. "THATS" when they go to your site, to see if your the right man for the job.
bio or projects/thumbnail of projects....its soooo subjective. You'll see a TON TON TON of portfolios that show projects first. After 3-5 years working in field, you'll see it doesn't really matter. Book it.

I am noticing that a comment often is about being more clean in the branding of a designers Behance/portfolio. But a Behance page for an Art Director who works with advertising would easily be more "all over the place". Because they communicate on a lot of various places/media, and what they need to communicate to solve the clients problems/tasks also comes to play when choosing visual language and platform. So their speciality would differ more than a designers, or what? Do you have any thoughts about this. Would be interesting to get the Futur's perspective on this. Anyway, thank you for all that you people do:)

Not a graphic Designer, but as an Illustrator, these portfolio review videos was really an eye opener for me and made me realize how unfocused my own portfolio are and don't show how my works can solve a problem a company have.
I basically just slapped in works without context and called it a portfolio, really embarrassing haha. Thank you The Futur!
Also a Singaporean here, I realize for Joel's "An Irrelevant Guide to All Things Geylang" context description, he used a slang to give a relatable and casual vibe ("makan" = eat in Malay). Would you recommend one to use slangs like this that someone out of our country can't understand, or for example, if Joel just want to only get Singapore clients, this is just fine and its just a small matter?

I think you already answered your own question here. Using slang or other similar vernacular helps to embrace intimacy between you and those who share your cultural background. If you're looking for work in different parts of the world, these nuances will immediately be lost without an explanation. However, if Joel's goal is only to seek work in Singapore, it would not be (absolutely) necessary.

For someone who just started with graphic design and has a couple of skills ( logo design, promotional videos, social media post design, business cards design...) and wants to work as a freelancer what would be your recommendation? To focus on one and perfect that skill or to present all of the skills he/she has?

I see it's a common trend when being introduced to a project, for instance while clicking a thumbnail on behance, that there is a desire to see an introduction to a projects background before actually diving into the content/designs. Would it be a better idea to instead of leading with the visual to instead lead with the breakdown of each project?
Watching this series is making me not only rethink how I am approaching my portfolio, but my website as well. It's been incredibly informative and inspirational in the way it's breathing new life in how I want to brand myself appropriately not only to those who enjoy my work, but to those who may be potential clients.
which online platforms, (Wix, Squarespace, Behance) offer this kind of template that I can put my portfolio pictures under all the pages?So, that recruiters have access to projects without going back to the Home page?
I love all that's said but for a next time I'lld love more comments on the portfolio as a whole and less on the individual projects in the portfolio?

I'm a bit puzzled how the last portfolio of the Italian student was so praised? It's not really matching the guidelines expressed in episode 1 of showing how the work solved problems or how it was realized..
25:45 I always thought it would be better to show your bio on your own website "first", since its not the first site people would visit.. Most directors find your work randomly on other platforms, and when they like it, they want to see the person behind the work.
"THATS" when they go to your site, to see if your the right man for the job.
bio or projects/thumbnail of projects....its soooo subjective. You'll see a TON TON TON of portfolios that show projects first. After 3-5 years working in field, you'll see it doesn't really matter. Book it.

Yo, Encina, If o have two principales skils (brand identity and digital) but i wanna looking for a job for the first one (brand identity), do you think i have to eliminate the digital work of m'y portfolio to focus on brand identity or put the digital work at the second level moment? Ex. 8 works of identity first, and then 4 or 5 works of digitale after? Thanks!
