You were so kind to that designer who just randomly plugged in a vector microphone. I get that 3hr is a tough time restraint but that is nowhere near a logo.
U nailed it.
I even find it expensive for $150 if it was 3 hours of work. It doesn't feel like a podcast app/service. He didn't even make a brief, just sent it like that. Also, seeing his work, he's more of an illustrator, not logo designer.

To be fair, seeing a lot of American podcasts, many of them have that style of “logo”

The 'A' in the first concept initially made me think of a signal tower, as if it is casting out the podcast far and wide...
100% the same. If it was mine, I'd have experimented with a bulb and signal brackets to see if it'd work without ruining the 'A' identifiability (that even a word? XD)

Some clients are so worse , when you send them a practical logo like the one James made. They outright reject that. And then they like the one with vector microphone.
You exactly say what is in my mind. This is absolutely true that in most of the cases clients go for the worst one not for the creative one.
i actually think the microphone was better. looked cooler by far the other one looked like something you'd get from a online logo generator

You could literally get that same microphone at *freepik* in less than 1 min, which is what I'm 100% sure he did, since he didn't present any drafts, concepts, ideas, etc. Also, I'm pretty sure Will asked them to design a logo for a spotify podcast, not a radio station from the 90s

I was hoping that Will could judge you fairly, but sadly he could not. Your logo cannot be scaled down and used as app icon. He was bashing previous guy for that and did not even mentioned that for you.
@@Zarezy I totally agree with you. I unfortunately ran out of time. For three hours, you have to get a quick design and move on to color and presentation. I would have definitely worked more on scaleability.

Unless James at 7:40 is an absolute machine of a designer there is no way he created all variations, presentation, and posters in 3 hours, unless he is using some type of templates for everything
I’m sure he used a template for the 3d mock-up and maybe even the posters, but I feel like a lot of the extra stuff can be done pretty quickly by an experienced designer. Especially if he uses a similar presentation style for other clients.
There is just no way he did all that in 3hrs

I think you’re talking about $100 one. $150 is actually a great logo if we look at the time he took to design it.
The $150 one was simply and mildly put - TRASH!!!
That guy doesn't really know much of logo design.
Rest were all at least workable or usable even if not perfect, but sensible for the price.
The $300 one just stood out because he took a totally different approach although I don't think I instantly recognized that as a vintage microphone.

James hit the nail in true terms. Considering how the Brands are approaching and rebranding, every logo is being turned into a minimal one! Not just that but the logo made by James is just too good to look at and its checks every requirement and condition on the list needed by a legible logo

Logan's reminds me of the Apex Legends logo, Henry's gives me that 90s Morning Radio show vibe, James' logo feels like Pintrest, Patreon, etc but different enough in a good way, and David reminds me of a modern small business/brewery logo. All of these were really well done and are good inspirations for an aspiring designer like me

While I don't necessarily have any issue using vector pre-mades, it's all about implementation and what you do to improve on the stock assets.
This being said, I've worked for companies who do this as a time saver, and as much as it crushes the designer in me, most clients don't give a shit about perfect original creations. It shouldn't be the rule or anything, but sometimes we need to remember that we aren't doing work for other graphic designers.

But no brief, no idea, no concept, no vision, nothing, just taking an svg file and implementing it like if he didn't cared much. For $150 we have seen already on this channel how much work can be done for that budget. I'm not judging by the way he works, it's fine, the problem is that he sells his profile as an experienced designer, and if we talk about reviewing, it's not a good work at all and says how much he has to improve and focus to deliver a better product.

You should create an open brief on twitter as a "design competition" and show you favourite type of results in a video. This way someone like me can participate with other designers and get attention by you and your viewers/this community.
@@willpatersondesign I dont know how many will actually take place in this competition. But its a great chance to let unknown designers like me show their result and get great feedback.I do really hope to see this kind of comp soon :)
@@willpatersondesign You can also create a brief on twitter where people comment their price and you choose like 5 of them and do basically the same. Twitter designers have a lot change + people like me who had no gig on fiverr get still the change to participate. I hope you get what I try to explain and let you understand out of my point of view/perspective.
We do something like this already :) it’s called Come design with me if you want to find it on the channel - although we haven’t done one in a little while now!

Kaigai put in about $300 more work than Mr Experienced designer at the end there.
Honestly, if you've got any qualification beyond a Certificate in Graphic Design and you're charging less than $150 for a logo, you're selling yourself short.

Yikes. Henry cannot be using assets of vector-based microphones that are so commonly used lol. Too many "designers" are going around charging folks and doing the bare minimum. When you look at his Twitter timeline, he has subpar illustration work but then logo work with detailed illustrations.. which were obviously taken from websites.
Shoutout to James, though, for going all the way! I hope he makes it far with his career!

I really liked the colour scheme of Logan's idea, had a vintage professional feel to it - which I can see might not fit the brief fully, but man it was sexy.
Super video, and variety in the end results... Am gonna sound like a grouch, but the last op - cool vintage idea, but I disagree with it scaling well. And thought to concentrate the limited time to make one of those ops Stella. But appreciate it's a three hour deadline which ain't long... And huge kudos to James, as that was achieved in the time frame. As said great vid, and entertaining to watch. 👍😎

Thought the cheaper option was great! Love seeing these videos to see what kind of results people get for different price bands. Felt the blue mic stock vector wasn't worth the money though :D Cant wait to see the next ones!

you should make a video where yu announce this competition so we can all participate and try ourselves, even the beginners.
I like that they did a presentation that made it easy to make feedback on. While Henry's problem is that one wouldn't know where to start the corrections because of no presentation. A presentation is important to start correction like on the colour, on the size, on the metaphoric etc.
All of these logos were amazing podcast logos but I really liked James’ design for the reason that it fits the college/university student app vibe

Going into this, I was thinking that I could be at the top of the list with my skill level. INSTANTLY humbled when I saw Dave's work. 3 hours for everything he made there?! That would take me at least a week! He is truly an embodiment of an expert and has inspired me to keep learning.

I've been looking at all of these videos and getting to the brief and then give myself about 20-30 minutes to work on the design before continuing the video. This is the first one that I genuinely liked mine more than all of those presented.
Nobody here seemed to consider the possible educational aspect. I feel that a podcast in itself is far too vague for certain expectations since there are innumerable different topics and formats. (Edit: I just noticed pencils in the last one)
I personally ended up with a very basic open book (to represent the story-telling and professional/educational component), with the microphone in the center, sound wave to the right for "P" (which everybody thought of).
I liked the 1st one. It kind of made me think of a space ship blasting off or reaching the top of a mountain peak towards success.
The first one with your edit is the best for me. I like simple logos

Although all designers did correct and an OK work in minimal, I also think James nailed it with the design. The most compact one with combining P, r , sound waves and even wi fi perhaps ? Also, works best as an icon with it`s smooth lines and colors.

I love this, i dont really pay much attention to GD but this was pretty entertaining, i am curious about the brief, was it supposed to be disruptive or competitive, where there antecedents, did they search for them. Was there any reference material or a about us of the fake company?
i think the first one was the best as it was simple and remarkable. the second was the worst, it didn't have a right word connection as pc = personal computer and it certainly looked as it was made using some clip art in the 90s. the third one reminded me of oldness because of the similarity to walking stick so didn't really spot on the idea it was trying to express. and the fourth one was just fancy. perhaps it's a good design but i like it simple.

How do you curate your selection for these videos out of your subscribers. Would love to be involved in one of these, I find the briefs you propose exciting, challenging and the feedback, breakdowns and educational format you take makes an informative watch without bombarding the audience. It's always interesting to see the perception of value and how different price points sometimes can reflect accurately or in-accurately of the work produced in response to the brief regarding their outcomes.
Hi Kyle, we like to choose different ways :) so far we’ve done Fiverr, Twitter, Discord and choose a random selection of designers from those who respond of different prices and experience levels :)

Yes buttttt with an app logo with too much going on it’ll look tacky too little and it’d get skipped over and you need to be able to change colors so for this video there definitely were sone great logos
David showed an asthetic, a feeling. I find this to be a very difficult task for a Designer. I adore his take on it. It makes one kinda feel like what the podcast is about.

I'm late to this party as I just stumbled on this channel..but I liked James presentations because before I even saw the logo, I was impressed with the word mapping and brief...I really liked James overall, because it was simple yet effective..But I was already impressed with the presentation ..I would have chosen James but I tend t lean more towards minimalist and simple..The microphone one with block letters reminds me of something you'd get off a logo website, but three hours isn't much time...
