This is art direction at its finest! I wish every art director is like this. Like going the extra mile to explain to his juniors what’s wrong, what to improve in the design, rather than being really vague.
I am impressed with this lesson, 👌 😌 which is almost in my mind but accidentally I had been mentioned in my story telling book therfore you have been aware about it and I have been practicing and useful for me it feels something different and much more attractive#SUBHASH NISARTA.
I always had problems with repeating elements and the thing he said about "is like music, you have to repeat beats or it sounds like noice" made it super clear to me, this is a really helpful video!
I wish more creative directors were like you. You provide explanation that we can learn from (which I’m pretty sure most designers are always looking to learn and improve) and you do it with respect. Love your approach and love that I can learn from you. Huge thank you!
Had a feeling that I watched this before, but was so good that I had to re-watch it. I really love content like this, it helps me learn and is very inspiring.
Awesome direction! I love that you are able to point out the designs that need help and offer suggestions without talking down to her. I've had bosses in the past that never learned that skill. And if you've never designed a magazine or newspaper before, it is a pain in the butt. You have to make every page of every issue look consistent, regardless of the varying amounts of copy and photos.
I like this! It shows me how to think about a design as well as how to critique another without being unstructured or even offensive. Also love to see Chris running around the office and actually sitting down next to a designer to give them feedback in front of the computer screen instead of staying in the studio.
This video is a gem of The Futur. I would LOVE to see more critiques around projects, no matter the type of work. Is really helping me understand type, and art direction a little better each time I watch it
recommend this to everyone. took each layout and designed it myself, then followed chris's direction. then made another one just to check what I've learned. Such great video!
Awesome art direction.! i notice that when you appreciate someone's work they will listen your critique and work more unconsciously.!! Thanks for sharing!! Appreciate that a lot.!!
Screenshot it and make it as a reference guys... It REALLY helps a lot, especially when you are stucked on the layout part... It is really not easy to do layouts... So Big Big Thanks to TheFutur! ❤️
When I saw this video the first time almost 2 years ago I was in the process of launching my own agency. Helped me a lot and felt like "I would work for that weird designer monk for free if I get that level of feedback". Fast forward today, agency is doing well back here in France, I'm so grateful for that. But I rewatched this video and I still feel like working for free to get advices from you wtf Chris! Thank you so much for what the golden free content you provide us. From the look of things, you should start rethinking the numbers and aim to impact 2 billion people since you're definetely hitting the billion faster than ever! Cheers.
This is very valuable, thank you for being so transparent about your process. I found a way to watch this more productively, by trying to analyze the examples myself first and then listening to Chris explain them, this way it feels like I'm getting critique for my own interpretation
Wow, great one, I rearly comment on videos, but Chris got this, your works are wonderful and an inspiration, thank you for showing designer processes big agencies don't want us to know.
I must say... I watched a number of videos about editorial design basics... and this single video that talks about a specific example, taught me more than all of the videos I watched combined thank you very much💕 a lot of tips for my report design (my professor will be impressed 😎)
Im SO loving this video! Old graphic design major coming back to her roots 20+ years later because one of Etsy shops is on fire! So I want to improve my Typography skills to do better and more ❤
I'm a design manager and must incorporate a lot of creative direction into my work and sometimes the imposter syndrome or worry that I am taking away designer autonomy can be really heavy - thank you for this video, it helps to see someone giving similar feedback with such compassion and confidence. It shows how much it can empower the designer vs demoralise them.
Opened up my mind for some new compositions, and helped me solve some issues I felt weird during production from time to time. Great video. Thank you very much.
Amazing video, I fell in love with design again and have decided to pursue this field as a career, and since then I've been watching videos on youtube until when I found this channel. All the videos you guys post are a great source and inspiration. Thanks a lot for those rich content and congratulations.
@@SuperSSystem I can vouch on it. Now when I look back at things, I know how much I have developed. My journey from an amateur to a professional has been overwhelming and now when I look at experts I realize, learning new things and aiming for perfection will never have an end 😀😀
Chris, you've created an awesome video that shows us how the critiques and proper art direction would be in a professional design firm. I wish there's more interaction from the Junior designer, maybe explain a bit more on how certain layout or works would solve the design problem. Overall, I love the critiques and feedbacks based on her designs that you provided to all of us from this short clip.
All of these layouts are beautiful, agree with most of his advice (although obviously i'm nowhere as qualified). Completely agree towards the end most of them had something that stuck out like a sore thumb, need repetition to make it feel natural and consistent.
If the design gods have pulled this from the archives and deemed it fit for a second take, who am I, a mere mortal, not to consume again for better understanding?
I'm studying graphic design, and I found this video really helpful and I think watching this will help me improve my Typography and layout skills. Very good construcive criticism and advise. Only wishing to have such a helpful art director one day More of video like this please! 😊
Damn, I can only hope I work with someone like this in the future. Concise, thoughtful, constructive feedback. To get this every few days would really push me improve.
Its nice to actually hear feedback then when a creative director just says "I don't like it" and you have to pull out of them what they don't like. Enjoy the content very much.
She handled the criticism so well, and he he directed the design in such a professional way. I would have said 'yes I'm ready' to his last question even if I wasn't, and especially if I was working for him! I felt anxiety throughout his guidance of the work, but I am new to the field 😅
Thanks buddy for your time in share with us this feedbacks. These are important informations that us freelancers designers that dont have many times. Them this feedbacks is very important, because give us a "true north" about the real and actualy graphic design. Thanks very much for your amazing feedback.

I'm a simple man, i see chris do teaching us... I press like!
No-brainer action
There seem to be a lot of simple men on RUclips spouting that exact sentence...
I always had problems with repeating elements and the thing he said about "is like music, you have to repeat beats or it sounds like noice" made it super clear to me, this is a really helpful video!
he treats designers as designers not just employees best business and graphic design lesson thanx chris

MORE ART DIRECTION LIKE THIS PLEASE! Maybe web?
This guy could stare at a blank sheet of paper and still come up with a lot of words to say about it. So intelligent!
Had a feeling that I watched this before, but was so good that I had to re-watch it. I really love content like this, it helps me learn and is very inspiring.
MORE STUFF LIKE THIS PLEASE!!! I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS VIDEO!!! WOW! IT SHOWS ME I LACK SO MUCH GRAPHIC TYPE KNOWLEDGE AND LAYOUTS!
Awesome direction! I love that you are able to point out the designs that need help and offer suggestions without talking down to her. I've had bosses in the past that never learned that skill. Really like the way how you ask your designer about the timeline. I wish some so-called art directors learned the basic etiquettes. Great job Chris!
What a loving, supportive and encouraging attitude. Jeez, I wish I had a boss like this))
Many thanks for the video, lots to learn!!!

This video was awesome! I hope to see more like them. Im jealous of this girl to be where she is and getting the guidance she has!
I felt the zeal in this girl to explore different layouts! Mahn, Graphic Design has just got me, I wish to be the best in it!
She’s amazing.
You can be the best in sthg that you will discover or invent for the 1st time.. till someone else is gonna copy that of even make it better.

This is like the best channel of all time
I love the dialogue and appreciation. Right on

Amazing work..... I’m impressed with the amount of variety in your designs. Thanks for the great critique too. 👍🏼
Min's a beast
Sometimes I learn more by watching your videos than in my university classes...
The professor i wish i had... super comprehensive and full of advices, instead of just saying "it doesen't work"
We all deserve a boss like that. The girl was super talented. I could never come up with so many layout designs like that.
I freeze when you're reviewing my work Chris... Great work Minhye
