Making the Squiggle Bench

- This bench is an experiment more than anything. I came up with an idea and wanted to see if I could make it, which is a bit of a departure for most of my projects. The bench is made of solid walnut and ash. It's dimensions are 40" long, 20" tall, and 12.5" deep. Surprisingly it is not uncomfortable to sit on.
I didn't glue the base to the squiggle because I want to revisit a better base design in the future. One thing I realized would save a lot of time is starting from the middle and working my way out; this would let me attach two pieces at a time and really cut down on the time waiting for glue to dry.
I think this method for creating unorthodox shapes is pretty interesting. This shape in particular could make a nice coffee table by adding a piece of glass on the top.

Seriously, what can one say about the Squiggle Bench? I’m speechless! Batman would say something like, “HOLY - MOLY!” ♥️👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
A piece fit for a museum! Great job!
That's beautiful... And easy to find the change that falls out of your pocket
I really like that bench. Two contrasting pieces linked together sends a statement of unconventional artistry.
Thanks a lot!
I am firmly in the "love it" camp! Awesome, funky, & unique design. The base was super cool as well.
Thanks Jonny!

I watch a ton of woodworking vids. and don't think I've ever seen a bench made like this. It's a brilliant concept / idea, almost a piece of art. Great build and enjoyed watching. thks.
Own it. It looks great. Try not to second guess yourself. This is a piece of who you are. It’s art. It’s you. It’s beautiful!
Thanks Chris!
LOVE when people take scraps or short pieces and make wonderful things out of them.
Thank you :)
That looks absolutely fantastic.
Hats off to you for the sanding, my least favourite job. 👍👍👍
A bery unique design and it shows again that you are not afraid of work.
Thanks Max!
What about a peice of heavy plexiglass as a leg. Would be kind of invisible. Would really showoff the bench
I agree, maybe route a dado into the underside of the bench to accept the glass.
The base works for me. The bench is so bold, the energy it creates g8ves off a very interesting kinetic narrative. It's really cool.
*Very Cool job*
Thanks!
Crazy project. Very nice result.
I want to thank everyone for their helpful criticisms and suggestions. I think I'll let the Squiggle sit in the corner for a few months and revisit it then. Hopefully by then I can figure out a more complementary base. Thanks!
I love the contrast of square randoms for the center base and the curved bench!
How about just a piece of tempered glass for the leg it'll be very sturdy and almost invisible
Cant go wrong with human bones..
3 thumbs up 👍🏾 👍🏾 👍🏾. The base you chose was 100% perfect. With something as intricate as the squiggle something straight, or normal would come off as a cop out. However anything too intricate would compete. The blocks have their own interest without taking from the squiggle. It also looks strong since the squiggle looks delicate. So it makes the whole thing visually sturdy. Only other option would be a clear acrylic base where it gives the illusion the squiggle was standing on its own.
Thank you very much! I appreciate it!
I thought I was going to hate the "Jenga" look, but I actually like it all together. For whatever reason, it reminds me of my childhood. Every toy bin I ever had always had some type of block mixed in with it...even the lego bin had the stray wooden block. I think the two opposing shapes and colors together make the piece more fun. It feels slightly off, but it feels satisfying at the same time. Nice work!
Thanks Joshua. This a is a really cool take on the build.
That was really amazing. A taller version would make an interesting sideboard/entrance table. Lots of possibilities! Thank you for sharing--it's a fantastic design.
Love the design!
Stunning effect! I love how it came out!
Wow! Beautiful
A unique design, neat work too!
It’s a beautiful ribbon bench. It will be amazing as a desk as well, with a glass top laid across the top of the waves, at desk height and perhaps triple the width, with perhaps the floating end or the back side attached to a wall to really secure the illusion of floating. You’re an amazing artist! Thank you so much for sharing!
Very interesting. Well done.
I think if I was to try and recreate this bench, I would makes the curves less tight in order to get a sander into the troughs. However I think that comfort would be the payoff for ease of build. I glad it was you that built this. Nice job.
I agree. While designing it I wanted to fit as many curves as possible. I didn’t foresee having to do as much sanding to even out mistakes.
I liked watching you make this bench but I'm drawn to unique things and love unpainted wood. You will master it through trial and error 😁. Keep up making awesome pieces of art. Thank you.😉👍
I love artistic concepts! The bench is cool!
Love the Squiggle Bench! What hit me that would make the perfect leg is a spiral. It would continue the wavy thought idea, but in a vertical fashion. Half the width of the bench with about the same twists per foot to keep the continuity to the piece.
Really clever design! I actually like the “Jenga” leg. Nice contrast!
I admire the level of determination. Epic!
Thanks Paul! It was definitely a labor of love!
Love the idea planning and outcome.. for the end leg I’d go glass end then I think it be a gallery piece for sure.. Thank inspired video
Frickin' awesome!!!!
I appreciate it!
Work of art, cool stuff
That is FANTASTIC!
Incredible piece of design and work well done.... the fact the leg is blocks I love and I wouldn't change it at all.
Thanks a lot Paul!!
That's a wonderful piece of woodwork and you're being too modest with your creation. Understand that each piece could be improved but own that work of art and embrace your creativity a little more
Thank you for the encouragement :)
Beautiful work!!!
super duper cool! well done
Beautiful!
That is just too cool! I like the block leg. I think it actually highlights the squiggle portion. I like that the leg has a different feel being blocks and a lighter color. Wonderful job!!
This is pretty awesome design. Love the contrasting shape and wood.
Great job!
This is one of those designs that you absolutely will never forget. I love it. Everything about it. It’s so simple but yet so complex, and the way you presented this make it simple for anyone to do. That base makes the bench “pop” I wouldn’t change it for anything else. Amazing work!
Thanks so much :)
Looks brilliant
Wow, the squiggle looks amazing.
Thanks!
looks incredible!
This is a work of art! Good job.
Beautiful piece of art
Always perfect continue
Very cool, appreciate the time and effort put into this build. 👍
That is an awesome build, tnx for sharing it with the world!!
Awesome awesome job so original and this was no easy task as a fellow woodworker I must say this is another awesome piece that’s both art and woodworking. Very inspiring thank you.
Very good abstract artistry!
Wow! That turned out so cool!!
Thanks Carl!
Awesome! ❤️
That can be an amazing coffee table too... great job
Thanks Ricardo!
Awesome man! Great channel
The glass leg that some ppl have mentioned is an interesting idea, or the hidden attachment to the wall I think is my favorite. How about the hidden attachment and then a false support. A support that would obviously never work and make ppl apprehensive about sitting on it. Then you walk up, sit on it and, ‘tadaaa’ it works!!
There are no rules in art and this is a piece of art. The seat has been well made and carefully planned, and the leg fits perfectly and looks great,I agree it would suit a museum and the plexiglass would also look great too. WELL DONE
Thanks a lot! I walk by it every day and still like the block leg, though I still consider changing it every now and again.
I think the base is also so cool. You did a great job man thanks!
Very inspiring. Thanks.
Wow that is really cool looking.
Love this experiment -- I think it came out really cool!
Thanks a lot! Now to make one out of GFRC.... ;)
I think a concrete cone would be really cool either with the point up or down. Very unique. Thanks for sharing...
For different base i mean....
Beautiful
love it, I like the contrast
Thanks Anna!
love it, all of it.
Very cool
Amazing job! Well done!
Thank you!
Really interesting concept. Softening those edges with the router totally transformed it.
Thanks James!
A huge amount of work but a really creative, interesting and unique piece. I really like it!
I love it!!
Awesome. Really awesome.
I think the leg looks awesome! A possible idea would be to transcribe the curve onto the leg and have the squiggle seated flush to the leg, instead of resting on the peaks. IMO that integrated look may look better and more seamless.
Great Art Piece
Your experiment turned out AWSOME. A lot of meticulous work but you did it well.Watching you build the leg I thought "What the ???" It just finished the whole project very well, well done my friend !!!! Thanks for sharing it...Cheers from John in South Australia
Thanks a lot John!
What a cool idea thanks for Sharing
Amazing 😍, it’s so unique
Congratulations on your work! Wonderful work.
Thank you Rinaldo!
That model at the end nailed it!
But seriously, that is a nice piece of art. I enjoyed watching your work and even the little receipt sketchup at the beginning. It is nice to see how some people think going into a project.
Great work and keep it up!
Lol thanks!
Great job
Thanks for sharing
awesome crazy art project! i like the contrast betwwen the colors and the curves of the top and the rectangular from the base
Great job man very cool
AWESOME Bro!
Wow beautiful piece 👍👍👍 the blocks look like scraps piled to hold the bench.
I have seen a lot of comments saying how they would do the leg differently, but I like it how it is. I like the contrast it gives. I think you did a great job, I am curious to know that is would feel like to sit on.
squiggly (ha ha)
Wow! I love it! It's fantastic. What a great design
Thanks! I like your name!
That is a very unique project, I like the fact that you gave it a shot. With the blocks and the squiggle, it kind of a looks like it would go well in a kids room, in a good way. As for the sanding the valleys, you could take a dowel that is longer than the bench is deep, chuck it up in a drill and cover it in sandpaper. Using a block with a hole in it to stabilize the other end would give you a nice long drum sander. You could also use a long piece of threaded bar with a bearing and a couple nuts to hold it in place, that would give you a place to hold that end and a little more stability over that length. You could even leave the ends of the sandpaper unnattached, cut it into strips and make a really long flap sander. Just a couple of ideas to help with that tricky sanding.
Such a unique piece! The squiggle is super cool
Thanks Tamar!
WOW!
Subscribed!
Love it.
I like the concept, I would like to see the bench to act like a floating shelf. support the bench by mounting it to the wall with pins that hit studs if possible
Amazing workwood
It would be a nice piece with glass on top for an entryway piece. Again, excellent work.
My wife would hate it but I freaking love it. Great work!
Cool design!
That’s a cool looking bench
Cool table! Very interesting
Thanks Petar!
Very cool. I like the juxtaposition.
Really nice design! Very impressive!
Thanks Erik!
