    The thing I've missed most about having my gym closed is having access to a set of dumbbells. When I saw some large pieces of 1/2" plate at the scrap yard recently, I had the idea to make my own set. Each dumbbell needed a different diameter of plate cut on the CNC plasma cutting table, to match the target weight. I used 1.25" round bar for the handle, which i welded the plates onto. After all the dumbbells were welded, I hauled them in to get a poly coat at the powder coater's. While they were getting coated, I switched to making a flat bench and a seat bench, which is what I found myself using the most at the gym. I cut the wood backing on the CNC routing table and installed recessed T-nuts. I used 3x2" rectangular tubing for the frame. I bought some black vinyl and sewed seat covers, which got stretched over the wood backing and stapled. The last thing to build on this project is a 2 tier rack to hold all the all the dumbbells. I cut the uprights on the CNC table and welded on angle, which the dumbbells will sit on. I milled saddles out of 1" UHMW and bolted them to the rack. Once the dumbbells came back from powder coat, the last thing to do was make stencils and paint on the weights of all the dumbbells. This was a huge project and I'm excited to start using them!

Teaching kids how to and including them in your work at a young age creates resourceful problem solving people. You don't have to teach them each individual thing, just the process of learning, doing and succeeding.

    The variation of dumbbells is extremely useful for a small person like me ruclips.net/user/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 But the dumbbell size being large it's hard to do certain exercises like deadlift ( I have to have my hands and legs a bit wider to accommodate the size of the DB )Otherwise happy with the purchase. not to be "that guy" but factories and small shops have hundreds of millions of engineers and skilled workers that have been doing this every single day for the last 2 centuries.
      so we already know how important they are and we're already using them to help humanity and they're not really that scarce.
      so if something catastrophic happens and 90% of humanity are gone we would still have tens of millions of engineers/doctors/wokers/physicists etc. so nothing much would really change, same boring unjust ol' earth but on a smaller scale.
      also he is not really a square 1 kind of guy, he uses machines built by engineers, you need engineers for square 1.

    I'd highly recommend adding some diagonal bracing on the dumbbell stand. There's some clear side to side movement at around 22:04, and that's with the rack not fully loaded yet, and just a light force hitting it in the most optimal direction. I fear that if you accidentally walk into it from the side with some force, it'll just bend the legs or snap the welds and come crashing down. It's not that I don't trust your welding skills, it's just a lot of weight, which can exert a lot of force. Front to back it's absolutely fine, side to side is a bit iffy.
    Other than that: A seriously impressive build. I first thought you were joking when you said the weights were getting powdercoated, but I get why you did it. The end result is amazing.

    • @rihamy2nd
      @rihamy2nd 3 года назад +8

      I agree completely. As much as he typically over-builds things (and I mean that in the most complimentary way), I thought that the rack, especially given the amount of weight it would be holding, looked flimsy.

    • @rainfallprojects501
      @rainfallprojects501  3 года назад +79

      I had the same concerns, and was ready to add cross bracing when I was building it. In that shot when it's moving, there were only 2 legs on the ground because the angle came with a slight radius to it. With the weights on the rack and all five feet on the ground, i couldn't budge it. But I totally agree, I had the same "folding" concerns initially when I started.

A while later people were moving and for 2 weeks there was garbage waiting to be picked up ,I finally stopped to see what was there.....2- 50lb York steel plates, 2-25lb plates, 11- 10lb plates ,2-5lb and 2-2 1/2lb plates ,one 6 foot chrome bar all 1 inch holes. For free. No more gym for 3 years. I bought a bench and trap bar. Total price for my gym ...400 dollars which is what the gym cost a year.
