    This method is excellent. I did almost exactly the same thing a few years ago, down to the screws in the wood to keep the form in place :)
    Notes: - Concrete Sonotubes: Waxed inside releases easy, can be used a few times. They come in various sizes.
    - 2" Abs pipe needs to be deeply scored on the outside surface (the part that needs to bind to the concrete), or it can pop out of the concrete plate
    - 1 7/8" Galvanized fence post makes a perfect bar for this system! Fill it with concrete so it can't bend (no flex, wide grip bar, makes it tough!)
    - Concrete is about 1/3 the density of iron, so your plates need to be BIG (ie ~18" like olympic plates), and thick.
    - Heat gun-flattened 3" abs pipe inserts as handles, so you can carry it like a normal plate.
    Love the buff videos!

      Yeah he did a drop test and it passed. Most people dont watch to the end, shame. But also on a hard floor you can just make up a couple of sand bags and a raised platform for deadlifting so there's no real excuse, most movements other than deadlift dont even require the weight to touch the floor except power clean row (floor to overhead, back down)
      And if you didnt want to use sandbags, you can make up a small trestle so your concrete plates have a 1/2 to full inch clearance of the floor and again use a raised platform to maintain the bar height of 9inches off the floor, or less (IPF standard limit)

      so you just weigh the dry concrete I imagine? otherwise the gallon of water ends up drying out and making it lighter

    • @MrMarkWilley
      @MrMarkWilley 3 года назад +17

      @@rp003.0 The magic of concrete is that the water becomes part of the final material permanently through a process called cement hydration. Concrete doesn't cure by "drying out" it cures by incorporating the water. But your intuition is correct, there may be some change in the weight as it cures. A cubic yard of concrete will go from about 3900 lbs to 3600 lbs or so. In the case of DIY plates, it's really only important that they're "close" to the desired weight and balanced as a pair. The difference can be made up by adding fractional change plates.

    Hey Duke, did you know you can improve the mechanical characteristics of concrete by adding extremely fine particles to the mix?
    Fine activated charcoal powder, at a concentration of 4% dry weight is sufficient to reap the benefits and activated charcoal is very very cheap. This addition gives a few interesting characteristics to the concrete like resistance to cracking when exposed to high temperatures and resistance to permeability by water.
    The reason it works is because when there's much smaller particles in the mix, they fit in between the spaces that the larger particles of cement just are not able to. This causes a lot of the of the porous voids that normally form in concrete to be filled and so you get a higher density concrete with improved mechanical characteristics.
    Superplasticizers can be added to the mix water to make the water wetter. When you use superplasticizer you can use less water in your mix and still achieve the same wetness in your mix, this will also have the effect of increasing density.

      It is if you have the right equipment. You'll need a huge forge and a huge crucible, and some sort of mold. I can imagine doing it with lead and tin, anything other than that would be impractical imo. Just use your common sense and don't breath in the fumes. And maybe coat the lead with something you don't want a lot of exposure.

      Depending on how you forge it, you could also introduce cracks, fractures, and air pockets into the iron which could lead to rust or it even falling apart on you, which could be dangerous. Not saying it's impossible, just that there's much more to consider since it isn't just about heating up iron and pouring from a crucible or sticking it into a forge and pressing.

      You guys are really showing your ignorance when it comes to distinguishing Parkinson’s from an essential tremor. Not all things that shake are Parkinson’s and an essential tremor can affect the hands, arms, voice, head, face, and trunk. How about y’all leave the diagnosing to doctors.
