  • This is my guide and technique for making Olympic concrete barbell weights. I cover steps in here about pouring the concrete and extracting the plates. Specs and details of how to construct the forms are included in the ebook in the link below.
    EBOOK: payhip.com/b/E7df
Also visit the website to see more:
    Concretegainz.com
The concrete used is Quickrete premixed concrete. It already contains pre-measured amounts of gravel, sand and Portland cement and fiber glass. This is what I recommend to use. I also have used steel rebar in some of the earlier sets and have concluded that steel remesh is just as good but a lot cheaper.
I've made over a 100 sets of these weights and have not had any of my personal plates or plates I've sold break. This is with normal care and controlled lifts onto a suitable exercise surface, (i.e. dense foam exercise mats or outside ground etc). Dropping or slamming these plates onto a rock hard surface will most likely result in a break or crack but normal controlled use of these plates will result in them working just fine and getting a great workout!

I had been wondering about doing this and was hoping someone commented about it as I haven't seen anything. Doesn't the concrete need to cure for a while? I know after 72 hours it should be ready to use, but doesn't it continue to cure for a month or so -at this volume? Looks like a gallon of liquid rubber should be. more than enough. How many coats did you use, 4-5?

@@concretegainz368 great video, i independently arrived at most of the same techniques as you. fyi a few tips:
      1) since youre doing this on large scale, you may want to look into pond / immersion curing for your plates. keep your plates soaked in water for a few days, it should increase strength significantly. you can use a kiddie pool or a large basin to submerge the concrete in water for some days.
      2) you can replace the steel reinforcement with chicken wire. make sure it has at least 1" holes, so that aggregate is allowed to pass freely through the holes.
      3) if you want to be fancy, you can use metal pipe instead of pvc. the sound of the metal pipe as the weight is loaded onto a barbell sounds exactly like a real plate.

My dad used to work both in construction and surveying, and he says the drier the concrete is/the less water you put in it the dry powder, the stronger the final product
