Think Rick will agree he’s not the best golfer on RUclips but what he does better than anyone else is educate us and bring us the best content available
Love Rick. I watch all his videos. However, when I watch him hit iron shots - other than chipping - it seems to be the most inconsistent part of his game and it drives me nuts. Instead of clubbing down and hitting 3/4 accurate shots - he's consistently trying to muscle up and easy iron shots become erratic. That would be my tip for him - club down; 3/4 shots and be more accurate. Countless videos I see him trying to mash a 7 Iron 180 yards out instead of a 3/4 six. Just my 2 cents...
I'm 58 years old and took my first golf lesson two weeks ago. In 1/2 hour the pro was able to fix most of my issues with just a couple of changes. Went out and shot one off my best round ever and easily could have shot 6 shots better. I now have the tools to improve every time I play or go to the range. My goal is now to break 80 by the end of the year.
All of these tips apply to every golfer regardless of handicap they play off. It also give something to fall back on when a round is going to complete a waste of a few hours it helps you to not have consecutive bad rounds
The amount of times I feel like you have posted this video and I’ll listen every time. Videos have helped go from shooting 110s to shooting high 70s and low 80s consistently. Ton of work put in but your advice helps and I live by it. Cheers
Just started the habit of stretch exercises before my rounds and the range. Following a program I downloaded, I Highly recommend it, better for your health and your scorecard!!
Rick is a golf Legend. When I was in high school/even now from time to time and had issues with my swing, I would watch Rick Shiels’ videos. His vids and tips actually work. Great man!
Well done Rick! I've missed your videos! Glad to see you doing them again!! I agree, that consistency is one of the most important things a golfer needs to do in order to become a better than average golfer. I have most of your recommendations for consistency covered and do not feel intimidated when it comes to shot making. One thing that I don't consistently do (now that I'm a super senior golfer) is go to the range. My focus now is on my short game! Good Job Rick!!
As a know nothing that started working at a course and picked up golf. I find my experience with other “repeatable precision” body mechanics, this video is SPOT ON!!!
You are my favourite RUclips golfer good at the game really helpful and fun to watch big big respect to you my brother hope to play with you one day I would learn so so so so much 👍👍💯🙂have a brilliant week and a amazing year peace out👍💯🙂
Great tips, and things I've learned over the years that make a huge difference. A few other things that made a big impact on me are the following... Practice Like You Play: The driving range can be a place where egos take over and where bad habits only get reinforced. Don't worry about how far the guy next to you is bombing his drives. For the serious golfer, range time is a place for things like working on new techniques, working out issues you're having with your swing, working on feel and distances, and working on that pre-shot routine. I always stretch out before I start swinging the club which is especially useful when you have an early morning round and the older you get more your muscles will thank you. Being one of the easiest clubs to hit, try starting with your pitching wedge and hit enough balls with it until you feel like you're making good contact and you're relatively accurate. There's no sense switching to another club with a longer shaft and less loft if your wedges are all over the place. When I'm hitting the wedge solid (usually 10-20 shots) I'll skip to an 8 iron and repeat the process. Then I will hit a 5 or 6 iron the same way. Then I might hit my 3 iron or 5 wood before taking out the driver. I change things up at times depending on how I'm feeling but the idea is to build confidence. Some days you might start off with a dead pull or a massive draw so work that out with the shorter, easier clubs before you bring that into all the rest which will progressively get worse the longer you go. Most ranges have targets with yardages to pins to help you develop a sense of how far you'll hit each club. Practice short pitches, 3/4 shots, fades, draws, and everything else you can that you might use on the course. After I hit from wedge to driver I'll start skipping around, just like when we're on the course. Use your pre-shot routine for every shot. Always pick out a target and hit to it, even if it's 20 yards short of the pin. This does two things...it slows you down, which relaxes you more, and it reinforces what you're doing on the course. For most people rushing things adds tension and we want to allow those muscles to move as freely as possible. Golf is as much a mental game as it is a physical one so develop things that you can use during a round that allows you to think less and be more confident.
Man! What a horrible round I had. Can’t hit anything proper, I’m finding the whole set up just completely uncomfortable. very frustrating! Couldn’t wait to go home and watch your videos Rick. Love your content! Shout out from Newfoundland! Cheers
I agree with Rick here on those points and for me this is what I do 1,I get to the course a couple of hours early to help with carts and chat with the other golfers and with an hour to go I’d go to the practice green and putt and chip for about 30 minutes and get “golf ready” 2,not many people at my club realise that the golf ball makes a HUGE difference in your game and 95% are using the wrong ball, for me I use to use the TP5x but was spinning it too much and switched to the AVX as I like to play bump and runs a lot and like the lower flight 3,I have all my average total and carry distances on a card on 1 side and the maximum and minimum I hit each club on the other side so I know what I hit and I get bagged out for having that but for me that’s important to have 4,I need to work on that aspect as I walk up to the ball and have a look at where I want to hit it and pull the trigger 5,I need to have lessons when I can get time after work This is for my game and it will be different for everyone else, but it works for my game as a whole but needs some tweaking
@RICKSHIELSPGA01 you can't imagine how excited I am. Be expecting a message from me that will include my social security number, date of birth; bank account info, and several passwords.
Taken right from the decade system, understanding your shot patterns will really improve your scoring. Knowing your carry and total distances is obviously extremely crucial, but at a point what becomes just as crucial is understanding your stock shot shape and dispersion left or right. Based on that you can select even more specific targets
Great reminders Rick. Getting back to simple basics and give myself time to settle into each shot. Going to do these things next time out. 13 months in to golf and I've broken 100 a few times but have a long way to go.
For me, a playing lesson was an eye-opener. I am struggling with 3 putting. I thought it was a problem with my putting and an approach shot, as I tend to hit my first putt from 15-20m. Coach watched me for the entire round and said "Ok, you land on the green 15-20m from the pin. But it is almost always GIR with a lousy tee shot. You just hit your approach shot from 160-170m. You are not expected to hit 4m from the pin from this distance." It looks like my approach shots with short irons are in fact very good. From 130y I can easily end up in 100% 2 putt area, with a decent chance of 1 putt. He prepared a set of drills for lag putts (as they could be better) and dramatically changed my driver. I used to hit it a bit too short, 200-220m. Now it is getting better, I can hit 270m, but still working on 240-250m distance with at least 70% FIR...
Thank you for these simple things to work on, to improve your game. Keep up the great work. I must say. Being a long time viewer of your videos. I find it funny, how your #4 is a pre-shot routine. Lee Westwood, kinda called you out on your lack of this with the 10 shot challenge video you had with him a few months back. 😂 Cheers!
I definitely agree with the regular check ups with a golf pro. I had a couple of lessons, fixed my swing and approach to the golf shot but after 2 months of playing on the course before another lesson I'd picked up so many bad habits without realising. Luckily I was corrected by my coach and have a lot to think about again!
Thanks so much Rick.. on our course you have to know your carry distances as we go over a wide river 8 times (it has a magnetic pull for golf balls), we also have some elevated greens so you have to know your carry…or bring lots of balls..great video
Bold of Rick to think I'm a consistent iron hitter. I took 5 lessons, and can't particularly hit my irons better either unfortunately either. Though my form & mentality has improved, I just gotta hit a thousand balls on a range to eventually figure something out.
Great advice/information as always Rick…. Appreciate all you do in support of helping fellow golfers ( new and old alike ) fine tune their game!!! Much appreciated!!!! Have a great day!!! 👍🏼✅🙂
I'd say short game practice is the single best way to lower your score , especially if you're a high handicap. How often do we come off a par 4 with a 6 or 7, blaming our poor tee shot when the reality is we took 3 (or 4!) from the fringe or 30 yards from the green. We're not going to always get down in two from there but if you could do it 1 time in 3 that's probably 3 or 4 off your handicap. But what Rick says as well! Consistency is the key. I'd give up 10 yards on every club if every shot was consistent. Thanks Rick. Great content as always!
One thing I'm finding myself improving on is knowing my club distances for my ability. I've found I can put it where I want it to fairly accurately (at least as far as distance goes, the right direction is an entirely different matter. ha ha).
Hi Rick, big question for you, I am 77 and play off of 21. Am using the Callaway Rouge graphite 2020 irons, but borrowed my friends aero burner steel irons. I could not believe how well I hit them. Now the big question could you recommend irons that are as good as those for me. I did ask Taylormade the same question but they recommended the Stealth, no surprise there. A second hand set off of eBay would be good enough for me, whatever you could advise. No pressure. Just watched your video on your new studio, all I could say is wow, wow. Please keep up your incredible independent advise, and 7 star videos.
1) Pre-round routine 2) Stick with using the same ball 3) Know your club distances (and use a range finder) 4) Pre-shot routine (consistent & repeatable) 5) Golf Lessons
I need pre-pre-pre-game routines where I actually go and practice outside of actual rounds of golf. And I absolutely agree with using the same ball. If I go from different balls within a round I know it right out of the gate. I like super soft around and on greens so any time I pull any kind of "X" model out of my bag I immediately hate it but deal with it lol
Rule 2 makes sense, unfortunately I use lake balls, I find, as I lose to many (up to 6 a round recently) to keep buying new. Golf can be an expensive game at times!
I had my first round where I came back with the same balls I went out with, last year. addendum: I like Calloway superhot bold in red. the color reacts with the tint in my glasses, and makes it look like the ball is glowing.
I dont actually want to be more consistent. I quite enjoy the randomness of my score. Sometimes i'll break 90 other times a 120! Always keeps me and the people I'm playing with on their toes.
Pre shot routine was critical for me to play more consistently, it almost felt like cheating. Yesterday I broke 90 for the first time in maybe ever lol 84

Ive just joined the golf world and have been on the driving range like 5-6 times but only 9 hole course play last thursday, so I dont feel like im doing anything right or consistently.
I have used Pro V1s ever since I started playing golf, but i don't use 1 type of pro v1. i sometimes use the 2023 model, the 2017 model and sometimes even the 2010 model. Is this okay or do I need to stick to one year of ball??
6th tip - Rick, if I can't do these first Five tips to your golf lessons, I'll take up Tennis and see how bad I am at that. LOL!!! Thanks for the video. Take care.
I watch ricks videos a lot, especially when i started learning golf about a year ago. He is referred to as a pro, but he has a ton of videos where he gives another pro like a ten shot lead to start a game. Does that seem wierd to anyone else, or is that just for fun? As far as the tips i do consistently use the same balls, the ones i find searching in the brush for my ball😂
Yeah it irks me a bit for sure. I understand he’s now a golf pro, not like a tour player, but it actually grinds my gears at times when he does the clickbait thumbnails with like “7 handicap vs. pro golfer.” Or when he said he could pretty much beat any RUclips golfer in match play. The stuff like that gets me. It’s okay to have some confidence, but the game needs to back it up and Rick’s game just isn’t on the level of some of these other guys that are no where near pros
The best way to be consistently good at Golf, is don't play 😆. Just stay in the club house and have a few beers. Can I have another beer please Dave? Ahhhhhhhhh consistency 😁😁!
Think Rick will agree he’s not the best golfer on RUclips but what he does better than anyone else is educate us and bring us the best content available
He's a plus handicap. It's not going to be that far off.
I agree! He is also very entertaining.
@@kooijbas no he's not
@@kooijbas a plus handicap is more than generous
Love Rick. I watch all his videos. However, when I watch him hit iron shots - other than chipping - it seems to be the most inconsistent part of his game and it drives me nuts. Rangefinders are a game changer, now I always know exactly what club to use to chunk it 40 feet

Can we all agree Rick is the best golf RUclipsr?
However!
Depends on what your looking for. Straight entertainment i gotta go with Bob does sports.
The numbers show it!
Fingers crossed you get the recognition from rick you were hoping for. I'm routing for you 🤞
Toemouse golf is the best up and coming one though
Rick is a golf Legend. When I was in high school/even now from time to time and had issues with my swing, I would watch Rick Shiels’ videos. His vids and tips actually work. Great man!
Great round James and phenomenal with the flat stick Rick. Love this format between you 3.
Love the tip about the pre round routine and pre shot routine, love your idea to imagine positive swing thoughts!
Can’t say enough good about Rick and sincerely thank you for investing the time to help us average golfers with improving our skill level and game.

Thanks burv, thanks for all your guidance!
As always, some great nuggets of golf wisdom. Absolutely loved the Ric Flair "Woooooo". Ric on Rick. Brilliant!

Freaking awesome video. The banter and commentary is simply amazing 😂👍👍
That box idea is really nice. I sort of use something similar but not consistently. Going to give this a go.
Doesn't work when you're in the trees
Hitting the course today and I had alot of pre game jitters this is exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you I never tried a range finder, I'm old school of eyeing it up. Will try one this week. Thank you

1,I get to the course a couple of hours early to help with carts and chat with the other golfers and with an hour to go I’d go to the practice green and putt and chip for about 30 minutes and get “golf ready”
2,not many people at my club realise that the golf ball makes a HUGE difference in your game and 95% are using the wrong ball, for me I use to use the TP5x but was spinning it too much and switched to the AVX as I like to play bump and runs a lot and like the lower flight
3,I have all my average total and carry distances on a card on 1 side and the maximum and minimum I hit each club on the other side so I know what I hit and I get bagged out for having that but for me that’s important to have
4,I need to work on that aspect as I walk up to the ball and have a look at where I want to hit it and pull the trigger
5,I need to have lessons when I can get time after work
This is for my game and it will be different for everyone else, but it works for my game as a whole but needs some tweaking
Ahhhh... "Think box, Feel box, Play box". I heard that on Imagine Golf a year or so ago (was it Annika's?) and it has been great for me.

You’ve got this bro! Work hard at the range and focus on 2 putts and you’ll break 100 before you know it!
I broke 100 Sunday in the comp, 110 ! Lost half a dozen balls maddening
Breaking 100 is a big deal! Only 55% of recreational golfers ever break 100. You will get there and it will feel great!

Rick Shiels is the best thing I’ve ever found on RUclips.
#6 : Avoid Double Bogey Three Putts at all costs

Ahhhhhhhhh consistency 😁😁!
what was that app that measured the distances?
Do we think that Rick is helping towards people been more inconsistent at golf?😂 break 75 says yes 😂
Excellent stuff rick, although I'm still consistently s**t!! 😂😂
Love you Rick!
My pre-game routine involves one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer.
Gotta stay consistent. Who's with me?!?
Hic! Think I might be too relaxed to play if did that. 😅
That is a thoroughly-good routine
Do you drink alone too? ;)

Some of my best rounds have been when very hungover...But don't reccomend as routine
